• Testing performance from around the world - how do I get a linux shell easily in multiple countries?

  We are building a socket based service where latency is paramount, and as such we have servers distributed into 7 data centres around the world. However, whilst we know we're bringing the servers closer to the clients, it's very difficult to know how effective this is, and importantly, what difference this makes compared to our competitors. As such, we want to run simple scripts that test latency and throughput for both our service and our competitors, which is easy enough using Amazon, however Amazon only have 7 data centres. We would like to know for example how we perform in locations all over the world such as South Africa, Australia, China, Peru etc. Does anyone know of any service where we could piggy back off their global infrastructure and run some scripts to test this performance? The obvious contenders are people like Monitis, but I don't think they would allow us to run custom scripts, only standard protocol monitors. Thanks for your help. Matt

• Restore Default Appearance in Ubuntu 12.04

  I'd like the original colour scheme, icon style of 12.04. I somehow lost the Ambiance theme (possible error or upgrade error). I re-installed 'light-themes' from the terminal and got it back. But the panel on the top that shows the options of sound, battery and wi-fi has changed and I can-not get the original setting back. In the windows, the close, minimize tools have shifted to the right instead of the original left side. I had installed MyUnity and Ubuntu Tweak but deleted them. As such, I want the original setting back. Kindly help me with the commands. I have searched for solutions; there are multiple and I need to be sure if I should follow the same. Kindly bear before marking duplicate. Discoveries *. [The appearance is gray and boxy as outlined here.] Not sure same problem. *. [Similar 'gray and boxy' article here] *. Desktop forgets theme.] *. I have also tried unity --reset command. It never completes. I gave it 20 minutes.

• What's the canonical process for backing up a website?

  This is going to sound terrible, but bear with me. I currently have a cron job that does a mysql dump, a git add all and commit, and a git push to bitbucket. I set this up almost a year ago, when I didn't know much about git, backups, and general web development and administration. I haven't had the time to fix this and do it properly, but the repo has now grown quite big from accumulating large temporary files from my forum, so now I have to do something and I want to do it properly this time around. What processes do semi-large websites and personal site admins use for backing up server content? Based on what I've learned since I set this up, what I'm currently think of doing is: Making changes on a development domain and committing the code frequently Archiving the entire site after a successful deployment from the development domain Having automatic daily database and user-content backups. I still like the idea of backing up sqldumps with git, though. I know git isn't a backup tool and that this is beyond its purpose, but the textual queries that are exported would be easily managed by git and would save a lot of space in archives.

• Is it possible to use two separate USB tuners with Windows Media Center?

  I'm planning to replace my traditional PC-style media center (with twin tuners) with an Asrock Ion 3D (or similar) but this means forgoing my existing PCI-E dual tuner card for a USB solution. Since Freeview HD (using DVB-T2) is now available I'd like to equip my media center to take advantage. The trouble is there are currently no dual DVB-T2 USB tuners on the market (that I can find anyway). Would I be able to plug two separate USB tuners and have them correctly picked up and working within all apps, including Windows Media Center? Are there any caveats I might need to bear in mind when using two tuners in this way?

• What sort of data should be sent for mouse-based movement in a multiplayer game?

  I'm new to the Multiplayer Rodeo here so please bear with me... I am just getting started and I'm trying to figure out how to deal with movement. I've looked at the question Best way to implement mouse-based movement in MMOG which gives me a pretty good idea, but I'm still struggling with what kind of data should be sent to the server. If a player is on position [x:0, y:0] and I click with the mouse on [x:40, y:40] to start movement, what information should I send to the server? Should I calculate the position based on velocity on client side and just send the expected location? Or should I send current location and velocity and direction? When the server is updating the clients on the players' whereabouts, should the position be sent only, and the clients expected to interpolate/predict movement, or can the direction sent from the client (instead of just coordinates) be used. My concern(or confusion) is regarding the ping/lag frequency of data update and use of a predictive algorithm, as I'd like the movement to be smooth even with a high latency, and prevent ability to cheat(though that's not the top priority).

• Printing Off Center or Images Offset After Upgrade to 14.04 LTS (Brother HL-2240)

  :) I have a very frustrating problem with my Brother HL-2240 under Ubuntu 14.04. Bear in mind this was working perfectly under Ubuntu 13.10. In Firefox, when I print a webpage, all of the images are off center and cut off, this is a big deal for my work. In Google Chrome, when I print a webpage, the page is off center, toward the right margin. In Opera, when I print a webpage, all of the white areas within the margins are black, using a lot of toner. PDF opened in document viewer, prints off center. Steps I have taken to troubleshoot: 1) Playing with the printer settings, resetting to defaults, etc. 2) Un-installing the Brother driver and re-installing (linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1 from the Brother website), which works perfectly in Ubuntu 13.10. I see a similar, un-answered question, here. Hopefully this question provides some additional clarity to the matter. If anyone would like some additional detail because she or he is willing to help, please let me know. I can scan output from the printer to show you. Thank you.

• public_html permissions for local development

  I know this question has popped up a couple times, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer to my issue, so please bear with me. I have Ubuntu Server 12.04 setup in VirtualBox for PHP development and testing (Drupal plus other PHP sites using Yii framework). My question is in 3 parts... 1) If I create a public_html folder under /home/myuser, do I need to give ownership of that folder to the Apache www-data group? If so, are there any specific permissions I should be setting? 755? (Btw, I am following this guide to create the public_html directory and set up multiple virtual hosts per site I create and test) I previously had all of my sites under /var/www, but ran into massive permission denied errors whenever I tried to sFTP to it, either through FileZilla or PhpStorm. This is what I had previously done: sudo chgrp www-data /var/www sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www sudo chmod -R g+s /var/www sudo usermod -G www-data [my_ftp_user] 2) The second part of my question is this: If I create my PHP project and files in Windows through PhpStorm, and then upload via sFTP, will permissions get affected? 3) Once I am satisfied with my developed project, would it be advisable to move and test them under /var/www to see how it would fair in a production-ish environment? I would really appreciate the help and advice here. I'm learning more as I go along, but dealing with Linux files and permissions is a bit of a new ballgame for me! Thank you

  I'd like to mention that im really new to this so please bear with me. I'm trying to setup a forum software to send emails via postfix but I think my server has the port 25 blocked. • Is it possible reinstall packages in Ubuntu without an internet connection?

  Hi everyone, While experiencing some massive problems with MYSQL, I completely removed a package called rsyslog, and I can no longer get on the internet to use the package manager to correct my mistake. I also got rid of librdf0 as well (oops). I would like to download the missing packages onto a CD with another computer, and manually reinstall them on my Ubuntu platform. Any ideas where to find these? (I am assuming this is the package I need. Either way, I still need to get access to the correct packages and install them). Thank you all very much in advance. Matt

• Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons. • What is the *right* way to use gnome-shell integrated chat?

  Please bear with me as I am still figuring out how to use gnome-shell. My question concerns how to use the integrated chat correctly. I have the following questions: 1) When people chat with me, it pops up as a notification on the hidden bar at the bottom of the screen, and then that chat stays there so I can access it later. How do I initiate a chat in this manner, without opening an empathy window? What I have been doing is Hitting super key Typing in the person's name, which brings up contacts Initiate the chat using empathy Immediately close the chat window When the person responds, it comes through as a notification. I then proceed to interact with the chat this way. 2) What is the keyboard shortcut for bringing up the notifications bar? Ideally, I would like to have the following experience Use some keyboard shortcut to bring up notifications Begin typing the name of the notification that I wish to investigate, and have the matching work in a fuzzy manner, much like Ido mode's buffer switching matching in Emacs When then right name is matched, I hit enter and then bring up the chat with that person as that popup notification. Are these behaviours supported? If not, I would be happy to work on implementing them. I am an experienced programmer, but not familiar with gnome-shell. If someone would point me in the right direction in terms of if this behaviour is supported, or where in the gnome-shell framework would I add to to get this behaviour, I would really appreciate it. • Ubuntu 9.10 Dowload Speed Very Slow

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and I'm new to the Linux world, so bear with me. I'm on a corporate network of 3 T1s shared across 50-60 users. I typically get about 300 KB/sec for downloads, but for whatever reason, the Linux box will start out in that range, then drop to less than 1KB/Sec sometimes. Doesn't seen to matter where I'm downloading from. Right now I'm trying to get Eclipse for PHP and it's running at 3-6KB/sec. Getting the updates for the system will also drop to very slow rates. Our IT person has set up the machine to get the same 10.0.0.x address when it starts, and moved this IP to bypass our Proxy/Firewall going out, so that shouldn't be the issue. Can anyone recommend something I can try to better diagnose the problem. Again, I'm new to the Linux world and the hardware/OS setup side in general (coming form more of a coding background). Thanks for any advice.

• How do I configure ubuntu server's iptables to allow java without opening the floodgates?

  I'm new to servers, so please bear with me. I have my amateur site running. Problem is, I followed Rackspace's instructions on setting up iptables and am pretty sure that's why the java server I'm trying to use on port 8080 isn't working (it runs the script but my android test app doesn't connect to it). When I try running the same java server script on port 80 it doesn't even start. I also ran nmap on my domain and saw that indeed only port 80 and 22 (for ssh) are responding. Is it possible to run Java and apache happily on the same server? If so, how can I configure my iptables correctly. (I'm aware that I should probably do some sort of filtering in the java server itself, but will figure that out later).

• How to limit server to specific IP addresses with mod_authz_host?

  Hi! I am very new to this area, so please bear with me. :) Right now I am running an Apache HTTP server on my setup, a very basic configuration. The website hosted on it is accessible from anywhere, and I want to limit the access to a specific IP address range. I've looked into this and I found that one Apache module called mod_authz_host handles this. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_authz_host.html The problem is, I haven't managed to find documentation that explains well how to actually do the stuff. How do I actually make sure only a certain range of IP addresses can access my site/server? The machine is running Ubuntu Server 10.10, the web files are stored in /var/www/, the apache2 daemon has its stuff stored in /etc/apache2/ and /usr/lib/apache2/modules/*. • How to remove .htaccess virus? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY First time posting so bear with me please! My friend's site has been hacked and the .htaccess file (which I really know nothing about) has been injected with a malicious redirect that forces search engines to the see the site as a "harmful website." If you look at the .htaccess file you can see it's Russian or at least ends in .ru. Seeing as I know very little about this stuff, I simply tried to restore the good .htaccess file back with his host. This doesn't work as the virus just recreates the infected .htaccess file. When I searched through the rest of his directories, I can see the same bad .htaccess file in most of the folders. I can't seem to help him get rid of this virus.

I do own both domains and both domains run on shared hosting. When creating a subdomain, all I can do out-of-the-box is do a HTTP redirect (302, yuck!) or a frame redirect. I also can set the DNS records on one host like nameserver, CNAME - but I would have know clue what I am doing. Please explain to me how routing with nameservers works and how I should (even if not possible with my current host) redirect subdomain.example.org to somethingelse.com with the user-visible URL staying at "subdomain.example.org"

• How to learn to deliver quality software designs when working on a tight deadline?

  I read many books about how to design great software, but I kind of struggle to come up with a good design decisions when it comes to business apps, especially when the timeframe is tough. In the company I currently work for, the following situation happen all the time: my teamlead tells me that there's a task to do, I call some guy or a girl from business who tells me exactly what is it they want, and then I start coding. The task always fits in some existing application (we do only web apps or web services), usually it's purpose is to pull data from one datasource and put into the other one, with some business logic attached in the process. I start coding and then, after spending some time on a problem, my code didn't work as expected - either because of technical mistake or my lack of knowledge of the domain. The business is ringing me 2-3 times a day to hurry me up. I ask my team lead to help, he comes up, sees my code and goes like 'What's this?'. Then he throws away about half of my code, including all the design decisions I made, writes 2-3 methods that does the job (each of them usually 200-300 lines long or more, by the way), and task is complete, code works as it should have. The guy is smarter than me, obviously, and I'm aware of that. My goal is to be better software developer, that means write better code, not finish the job quicker with some crappy code. And the thing is, when I have enough time to tackle a problem, I can come up with a design that is good (in my opinion, of course), but I fall short to do so when I'm on a tight deadline. • How to Reset Windows 7 to its default font for the whole system?

  This might sound a little bit silly but please bear with me. Somehow I changed my default display font, the one that Windows uses for system dialog boxes, accept/cancel buttons, pretty much everything in the system (it even goes as far as to change how my the text in my web browser appears). Now everything that it's affected looks like under the effects of the bold button in office (very black and very thick words). This is an inconvenience for example on some mail accounts who use this effect to display unread messages. Is there any way to return it to its default state, non "bold" typography for the whole system?

• How to use proxy on Virtual Box (Windows XP)

  I'm not exactly the most tech savy so please bear with me. I am trying to connect through a proxy with my Virtualbox accounts. Initially I wanted to just set the browsers in each virtualbox under a proxy but my boss said that it can probably be done right off the bat under the virtualbox accounts itself. Could anyone guide me on how to do this? All the instructions online state that their should be a proxy setting in preferences however all I see is a Network Adapter tab. Thanks!

• Economical way to get many harddrives into rack mount?

  Hi everyone, Please bear with me as being a bit of a newcomer at 19" rack-mounted equipment. I've thought a fair bit lately about the best way of getting 4x or 6x of 2.5" hard drives into my rack and are right now currently slightly confused about would be the best (economical) solution. After scouting the market, I've found this type of disk array units that offers built in RAID and a lot of drive slots and a truckload of geek cred, but at a price that just isn't going to fit in my budget. I've also found these type of cute adapters that takes two 2.5" drives in one 3.5" slot, but I will obviously need a chassie with a lot of 3.5" spaces in order to make it work. So what is the most economical way to house my harddrives in my rack?

  Matt Lord already announced this change, but I am so happy, so want to repeat. MySQL Community Bugs Database Team introduced new button "Affects Me". After you click this button, counter, assigned to each of bug reports, will increase by one. This means we: MySQL Support and Engineering, - will see how many users are affected by the bug. Why is this important? We have always considered community input as we prioritize bug fixes, and this is one more point of reference for us. Before this change we only had a counter for support customers which increased when they opened a support request, complaining they are affected by a bug. But our customers are smart and not always open support request when hit a bug: sometimes they simply implement workaround. Or there could be other circumstances when they don't create a ticket. Or this could be just released version, which big shops frighten to use in production. Therefore, sometimes, when discussing which bug to prioritize and which not we can not rely only on "Affects paying customers" number, rather need to make guess if one or another bug can affect large group of our users. We used number of bug report subscribers, most recent comments, searched forums, but all these methods gave only approximation. Therefore I want to ask you. If you hit a bug which already was reported, but not fixed yet, please click "Affects Me" button! It will take just a few seconds, but your voice will be heard.

• Is it possible to use the same MAC address for an entire subnet?

  I wish to add static entries to the ARP table of my machine so that it uses a dummy MAC 00:11:22:33:44:55 for any IP address within the subnet 10.0.0.0/8 Using arp -s 10.0.0.0/8 00:11:22:33:44:55 does not work. What can I do? PS - I know it might sound strange why anyone would want to do this but kindly bear with me here. EDIT: I am using this so that the hosts do not send a broadcast ARP message. I route the packets to the appropriate last hop router which changes the dst MAC from the fake MAC to the MAC of the dst IP address. I can get everything working except I have to manually enter the fake MAC for each subnet IP address.

• Separate update and render

  I'm programming a simple Snake in Java. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Java and Game Developing, so please bear with me ;) Until now, I have been using a UI thread, as well as a update-thread. The update thread just set the position, set the GameObjects, and so on. I didn't think much of concurrency, but now I've come to a problem. I wanted to modify the ArrayList<GameObject>, but it throws a java.util.ConcurrentModificationException. With a little research I found out that this happens because the two threads are trying to access the variables at the same time. But I didn't really find a way to prevent this. I thought about copying the array and swapping them out when the rendering is finished, but I would have to deep-copy them, which isn't really the best solution in my opinion. It probably eats up more CPU resources than a single-threaded game. Are there any other ways to prevent this? Thanks a lot for your help!

• What is the advantage of WSDualHttpBinding in WCF?

  How much benefit would there be to using WSDualHttpBinding with IIS hosted service vs. a client poll that calls the WCF service, assuming in the latter the service cached the data in question? This scenerio would be for a notify type of service where the clients need to be notified by the service when an event occurs. Specifically, what advantages would WSDualHttpBinding provide over polling? ie: Less network traffic, faster to design, easier to maintain, more control ??? From what i understand, WSDualHttpBinding is less scalable than client polling, so why use it at all? Edit: As Matt supplied, time critical can be one reason for the duplex binding. Here is what i have so far: WSDualHttpBinding adv: can get immediate response w/o waiting on polling timer dis: less scalable than WsHttpBinding dis: less firewall friendly I'll add to this based on comments, please let me know if i state anything incorrectly. thanks for you input :-)
