• m and s keys do not work over vnc connection to ubuntu server

  I'm new at setting a lot of this up, so bear with me. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 server on a 64 bit machine. Then I added vnc so I could manage it while it's racked. I start the server, SSH to it, and run vncserver :1 At this point, all keys work fine. Next I exit out of the SSH session and fire up my client vnc app. I connect via the IP :1, enter my password, and everything seems to be fine. Now when I enter a terminal (through the vnc connection) I cannot type lowercase "s" or "m" (upper case works). I've tried on two different pc's running the vnc client, but it's the same. I also installed the latest updates from Ubuntu as of today. Thanks for any help.

• NUnit with an ASP.net web site

  Hi folks, I'm currently trying to upgrade our build server at work, going from having no build server to having one! I'm using JetBrains TeamCity (having used ReSharper for a couple of years I trust their stuff), and intend to use NUnit and MSBuild. However, I've come up with an issue: it appears that it is not possible to test an ASP.net Web Site with NUnit. I had assumed it would be possible to configure it to test App_Code after build, however it seems that the only way to do tests nicely is through converting the Web Site to a Web Application (which my boss does not like the idea of). Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could go about this? Please bear in mind that the testing needs to be able to be fired automatically from TeamCity.

I have my header file that has the api's which grant them access to the lib. now there is a debug and a release version that is talked about. how do i give these to my client? do i need to give them both folders or just the lib file along with the header file for that lib. The lib is ready for use directly. but i am a little confused between debug vs release. thanks

• Inner join 2 tables one to many 2 where clauses

  I'm a relative rookie at this,so please bear with me... I have 2 tables: OrderDetail and OrderMaster...both have a column named SalesOrder. OrderDetail table has multiple rows per unique SalesOrder. OrderMaster table has one row per unique SalesOrder. OrderDetail has a column named LineType. OrderMaster has a column named OrderStatus. I want to select all records from OrderDetail that have a LineType of "1" AND whose matching SalesOrder line in the OrderMaster table has a OrderStatus column value of "4". In plain English, orders with a Status 4 are open and ready to ship, LineType value of 1 means the Detail Line is a product code. How should this query be structured? It's going into VS 2008 (VB). • Referral System PHP

  I have a membership based website and im planning on implementing a referral system. My website is credit based, the idea is that if User X refers User Y, then User X gets 100 bonus credits. Has anybody built a referral system before and if so what obstacles should I bear in mind? I've had a snoop round SO tonight but couldn't find any suitable answers. My theory is to give each user a random string which is generated and stored in the DB when they sign up, The user will then be presented with a URL incl. that string which when they pass to somebody (User Z), User Z is then sent to a page, the page then uses the GET method to gather the Random string and update the DB Row they currently occupy, does this sound feasible or could it easily be breached? • Conditionally setting the font color of an item in a drop down box in JSF

  I'm a newbie to web programming, so please bear with me. I am using JSF 1.2 and I want to conditionally set the color of the items in my drop down list. In other words, I have a collection of items that, along with a key and a value, also have a boolean property, warning, that is dynamically set by user action. I want the drop down to show all of the items, but those whose warning property is set to true should be displayed in red. I assume I have to extend the SelectItem class to add in the boolean property. How do I then conditionally set the color of the font of those items whose warning property is set to true in my JSP pages? Thanks in advance

• Do validations still fire in ASP.NET even if the controls are hidden?

  I have a form that uses ASP.NET validations. I am using some inline C# in the aspx to show/hide certain controls depending on a user's role. I would use the Visible property, but there are so many of them, I just decided to do inline C# to show and hide (I know, not best practice, but bear with me for a second). I am having an issue where Page.IsValid is always set to False when I submit my form (when certain fields are being hidden). Will the validations still fire off even if the controls are not even rendered on the pag? Also, if this is not the case, is there an effective way of breaking down Page.IsValid to find out what is setting it to False? Thanks.

• Grouping and retrieving most recent entry in a table for each group

  First off, please bear with me if I don't state the SQL question correctly. I have a table that has multiple columns of data. The selection criteria for my table groups based on column 1(order #). There could be multiple items on each order, but the item #'s are not grouped together. Example: Order Customer Order Date Order Time Item Quantity 123456 45 01/02/2010 08:00 140 4 123456 45 01/02/2010 08:30 270 29 123456 45 03/03/2010 09:00 140 6 123456 45 04/02/2010 09:30 140 10 123456 45 04/02/2010 10:00 270 35 What I need is a result like: Order Customer Order Date Order Time Item Quantity 123456 45 04/02/2010 09:30 140 10 123456 45 04/02/2010 10:00 270 35 This result shows that after all the changes the final order includes 10 of Item 140 and 35 of Item 270. I've got an iPhone 3GS that I use only for development and over the months I've accumulated 3,472 rollover minutes (my primary phone is an Android G-1). It seems a shame to let these minutes go to "waste." What cool iPhone app would you like to see that uses these minutes up in a productive, interesting, and possibly cool way. I'll code whichever suggestion has the highest vote, providing it's not illegal and doesn't violate Apple's SDK, and release it for free on the AppStore.

• JQuery: Selecting Text in an Element (akin to highlighting with your mouse)

  I would like to have users click a link that then selects the html text in another element (NOT an input). By "select" I mean the same way you would select text by dragging your mouse over it. This has been a bear to research because everyone talks about "select" or "highlight" in other terms. Is this possible? • How do I search for an array of values in a many to many relation?

  Hey I have a problem with my LINQ to Entity model many to mant relation. I am new to both C# and LINQ, so bear with me. I have a model containing pictures and tags, where each picture can have many tags, and each tag can be on many pictures. In the db there is a normal relation table, but in the object model I see it as picture.tags (as a list) and tag.pictures (as a list). A search query contains several tags, and the result of the search is to contain all pictures that are tagged with all the tags (but maybe more) I have searched for. The number of tags to search for is not fixed. How can this best be done?

• Basics of html5 and canvas

  As I browse through different questions here, I see that there are a number of questions tagged with html5 and canvas, so I guess they sort of belong together. Now, I have absolutely no idea about the canvas (which is obviously (?) rendered in html5), but it seems that It could be useful one day in the future. So, in order to be prepared when that day comes, I'd like to know the basics about these things. I found a html snippet that is supposed to render such a canvas, but when opened in my browser (firefox) nothing is displayed. So, I guess I need a special plugin or another browser. My question: what are the absolute basic things I need to know and have in order to create a hello world thingy. Please bear in mind that I am completely new with this and don't need no fancy advanced stuff.

  I'm working on a Rails application. I have a Module called Animals. Inside this Module is a Class with the same name as one of my Models (Dog). show_animal action: def show_animal require 'Animals/Bear.rb' #Works require 'Animals/Dog.rb' #Fails end So the first require definitely works, the seconds fails. MissingSourceFile (no such file to load -- Animals/Dog.rb): I noticed that Dog.rb is the same file name as one of my models, is that what's causing this? I'm using Webrick.

• Is it OK to run an array with 22k strings in a PHP code on a shared web host?

  I'm new to writing code so kindly bear with me if this is a very noobish question. A couple of days back I asked a question about a PHP code that matches the the query entered by users on my website to an array stored within the PHP code and displays the matched queries. Here is the code I'm talking about Now I've ended up with a rather large list (over 22k) of strings that have to be stored in the array. Is it ok to run it like this? I'm hosting the site on a shared hostgator package, will this cause my site to crash? I don't know too much about DBs but can I somehow store this on MySQL instead of having it in the code?

• Deploying Rails app over VPN

  You'll have to bear with me as I'm not a Ruby dev, but have inherited a Ruby system. I need to deploy some changes to the app from my repository to the server. I've been instructed to run cap deploy and told that that script will get the latest code from my repository and deploy it to the server. My problem is that I have to VPN to get to the production server and the VPN client then blocks access to my local network, cutting off the repository. So my question is, how can I change my deploy.rb so that I can deploy from my local machine instead? Or is there a better way. If you need to see the deploy.rb, please let me know. Thanks Dave

I have a VS 2010 Web project up and I'm trying to understand how I can make a custom UpdateCommand (Because I chose to write my own SQL statement, I do not have the option for VS 2010 to auto generate an update command for me.) Problem is: I don't know what the UpdateCommand should look like.   I've been writing Windows Services for a while and they always seem to work fine for things that need to run every day, few times a week, once a month, etc. but I've been lately thinking about going with Windows Workflow Foundation. However, I am unsure how would they run on a server without some container application (for instance SharePoint)? I worked with Sharepoint workflows before and I always had huge problems, at first with the bugs in the workflow architecture implementation (the problems with sleep and delay) and later when they eventually started to work, they were difficult to manage and change. On the other hand Windows Services were always quite easy to implement, easy to create a setup for them and install them and they were always quite resilient (they were often working for months without crashing or something else going wrong). What do you recommend? Please bear in mind we are working in .NET (version is of no problem, if 4.0 brings something new on this subject, we can use it).

The actual thing I want to know is "How can i get first 50 and then next 50 records from database for page 1 and 2 respectively" My Query is Select * from data [data table contains 20,000 rows] For page #1 I get 50 records and for page #2 I want to get next 50 records. How can I implement it efficiently in JDBC? I have searched and found that rs.absolute(row) is the way to skip first page records but it takes some amount of time on large result sets and I don't want to bear this amount of time. Also, I don't want to use rownum and limit + offset in query because these are not good to use in query, I dont know why, still I don't want to use it in query. Can anyone help me how to get limited ResultSet for pagination or is there any way JDBC is giving us?

• increasing speed and efficiency of ajax call

  I'm not the most disciplined dev, dont know standards and am self-taught so bear with me. I create stuff very logically and fast but not always using 'programming standards'. I have a mobile app using geolocation API. it gets thousands of places from my db and makes gmaps v3 markers for the ones around the user's current location. there is an ajax call from my JS to an aspx page that calls the database, makes a json string, and sends the json string to the javascript that then creates the google map markers. would i save time if the json string was in a flat file? im not sure if, generally speaking, accessing a sql db from an aspx page is faster than c# file i/o on a flat file with pre-rendered JSON. (of course, using the flat file, it would update everytime the db is updated)

• MVVM Light Toolkit V3 SP1 for Windows Phone 7

  He he I start to sound like Microsoft… Anyway… I just released a service pack (SP1) for MVVM Light Toolkit V3. Why? Well mostly because I worked a bit more with the Windows Phone 7 tools that were released at MIX0, and I noticed a few things that could be better in the Windows Phone 7 template. Also, I only found out at MIX that you can actually install custom project templates for Visual Studio Express. For some reason I thought it was not possible. The best way to solve these issues is through a service pack, which consists of a few zip files. Simply follow the instructions on the “Installing Manually” page. You can go ahead and overwrite the files that were installed with V3, all the file structure and names are exactly the same. What? So what do you get in this service pack that was not already in V3? (for more info about what’s new in V3, check the What’s New page). Project and Item templates for Visual Studio 10 Express (phone edition). Unzip these files in your “My Documents” folder, and you can now create a new MVVM Light application in the WinPhone7 version of Visual Studio 2010 Express. Signed assemblies: All the assemblies are now signed, which is a requirement in certain build configurations. XML documentation files: Thanks to Matt Casto for pinging me and reminding me that I had forgotten to include them (doh). New and improved Windows Phone 7 assemblies and templates: This one deserves its own section (see below). What was wrong with the old Silverlight 3 assemblies in Windows Phone 7 projects? It was kind of weird. Functionality wise, it was working just right. However, if you noticed, the EventToCommand behavior was not visible in the Assets tab of Expression Blend, under Behaviors, where it should normally have been. The reason was that even though the Windows Phone 7 is using Silverlight 3, the System.Windows.Interactivity that Blend was expecting is the version that is normally used in Silverlight 4. Yeah, I know, it’s weird. This led me to create a specific version of these assemblies for the phone. The assemblies are located into C:\Program Files\Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft)\Mvvm Light Toolkit\Binaries\WP7. There are 3 DLLs: GalaSoft.MvvmLight.WP7.dll with RelayCommand, Messenger and ViewModelBase GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.WP7.dll with EventToCommand and DispatcherHelper System.Windows.Interactivity.dll which is the same DLL installed in the Blend SDK, and which is needed for the EventToCommand behavior to work. • Cloud Application Management for Platforms

  Today Oracle, along with CloudBees, Cloudsoft, Huawei, Rackspace, Red Hat, and Software AG, published the Cloud Application Management for Platforms (CAMP) specification. This spec deals with application management in the context of PaaS. It defines a model (consisting of a set resources and their relationships), a REST-based API for manipulating that model, and a packaging format for getting applications (and their attendant metadata) into and out of the platform. My colleague, Mark Carlson, has already provided an excellent writeup on the spec here. The following, additional points bear emphasizing: CAMP is language, framework and platform neutral; it should be equally applicable to the task of deploying and managing Ruby on Rails applications as Java/Spring applications (as Node.js applications, etc.) CAMP only covers the interactions between a Cloud Consumer and a Cloud Provider (using the definitions of these terms provided in the NIST Cloud Computing Reference Architecture). The internal APIs used by the Cloud Provider to, for example, deploy additional platform services (e.g. a new message queuing service) are out of CAMP's scope. CAMP supports the management of the entire lifecycle of the application (e.g. start/stop, suspend/resume, etc.) not just the deployment of the components that make up the application. Complexity is the antithesis of interoperability. One of CAMP's goals is to be as broadly interoperable as possible. To this end, the authors of CAMP tried to "make things as simple as possible, but no simpler". For example, JSON is the only serialization format used in the spec (although Providers can extend this to support additional serialization formats such as XML). It remains to be seen whether we can preserve this simplicity as the spec is processed by OASIS. So far, those who have indicated an interest in collaborating on the spec seem to be of a like mind with regards to the need for simplicity. The flip side to simplicity is the knowledge that you undoubtedly missed something that is important to someone. To make up for this, CAMP is designed to be extensible. The idea is to ship what we know will work, allow implementers to extend the spec, then re-factor the spec to incorporate the most popular extensions. Anyone interested in this effort, particularly those of you using PaaS-level services, is encouraged to join the forthcoming OASIS TC. As you may have noticed, CAMP is a bit of a departure from some of the more monolithic management standards that have preceded it. The idea is to develop simple, discrete standards targeted to address specific interoperability and portability problems and tie these standards together with common patterns based on REST and HATEOAS. I'm excited to see how this idea plays out.

• Customer Support Spotlight: Clemson University

  I've begun a Customer Support Spotlight series that highlights our wonderful customers and Oracle loyalists.  A week ago I visited Clemson University.  As I travel to visit and educate our customers, I provide many useful tips/tricks and support best practices (as found on my blog and twitter). Most of all, I always discover an Oracle gem who deserves recognition for their hard work and advocacy. Meet George Manley.  George is a Storage Engineer who has worked in Clemson's Data Center all through college, partially in the Hardware Architecture group and partially in the Storage group. George and the rest of the Storage Team work with most all of the storage technologies that they have here at Clemson. This includes a wide array of different vendors' disk arrays, with the most of them being Oracle/Sun 2540's.  He also works with SAM/QFS, ACSLS, and our SL8500 Tape Libraries (all three Oracle/Sun products). (pictured L to R, Matt Schoger (Oracle), Mark Flores (Oracle) and George Manley) George was kind enough to take us for a data center tour.  It was amazing.  I rarely get to see the inside of data centers, and this one was massive. Clemson Computing and Information Technology’s physical resources include the main data center located in the Information Technology Center at the Innovation Campus and Technology Park. The core of Clemson’s computing infrastructure, the data center has 21,000 sq ft of raised floor and is powered by a 14MW substation. The ITC power capacity is 4.5MW.  The data center is the home of both enterprise and HPC systems, and is staffed by CCIT staff on a 24 hour basis from a state of the art network operations center within the ITC. A smaller business continuance data center is located on the main campus.  The data center serves a wide variety of purposes including HPC (supercomputing) resources which are shared with other Universities throughout the state, the state's medicaid processing system, and nearly all other needs for Clemson University.
