  • Finding a backup and synchronization solution

    I'm having difficulties to find a backup and synchronization solution with the following characteristics: Cross-platform: Windows, Linux, Mac Offsite backup (so Internet Backup) Data deduplication Transfer only new/modified bits of modified files Secure: Data encrypted before leaving computer Maintain multiple versions of files (even deleted files) Folder synchronization integrated with backup and across multiple computers connected to the internet (not necessarily in the same LAN) I think that the Folder Sync feature needs a better explanation. The use case is this: you have a desktop pc and a laptop. The desktop pc contains a folder with some files and this folder is part of the backup (so it was selected to be backed up). The laptop does not contain that folder or that files at all. Then you're abroad with your laptop and you need that folder. So you want to be able to open the backup program, select that folder from the backup and download it in your laptop mantaining it synchronized with the backed up version. When you then come back home and switch on your desktop pc you want the folder we're talking about to be updated in the desktop PC. Does anyone knows any service with all these features? I've only found SpiderOak to support all the features I've mentioned but I'm not completely satisfied by the time taken to complete a backup. Sometimes it seems to hang for minutes with no reasons at all and folder synchronization occurs only after all files are backed up (instead folder sync should have a separated queue independent from other backup operations and synchronization should occurs frequently... for example every 5 minutes or less, independently from the frequency of normal backup operations)

  • Linux software to maintain old/backup versions of directory tree

    I am replacing an old Linux file server serving NFS and CIFS. For the new server (still serving CIFS and NFS), I would like to have software that automatically and efficiently maintains old revisions of files in parallel trees, so that they can be accessed by users without special tools. I am looking for software that is akin to Time Machine or Flyback, but works well on a server. The dataset is some 10000 files weighing maybe 60 GB. Changes are relatively few, usually less than 100 files changes daily. Using LVM snapshots will not cut it, as the old revisions must reside on a separate set of disks from the live data. Edit: To clarify: keeping old revisions is non-vital addition to the solution, so any suggestion will have to stay in the range of some hundred euros.

  • How can I store spell & items using a std::vector implementation?

    I'm following along with a book from GameInstitute right now, and it's asking me to: Allow the player to buy and carry healing potions and potions of fireball. You can add an Item array (after you define the item class) to the Player class for storing them, or use a std::vector to store them. I think I would like to use the std::vector implementation, because that seems to confuse me less than making an item class, but I am unsure how to do so. I've heard from many people that vectors are great ways to store dynamic values (such as items, weapons, etc), but I've not seen it used.

  • How should I store and secure self-signed certificates?

    I'm fairly certain I shouldn't commit certificates into source control. Even if the repository is private and only authenticated coworkers (for example) have access to it. That would allow for accidental exposure (thumb drives, leaked credentials, whatever). But, how should I store and secure certificates? I don't suppose I should just plop them on the network file server, for some of the same reasons I wouldn't put them into source control, right? Is there some kind of secure certificate store that I can run? Does the Java "keystore" do that generally or is it specific for like weblogic servers or something?

    I have worked as a developer for over 10 years now. During that time I have had my own small projects where I have developed tools, applications and games. I have not found any robust solution to store my work. It’s always fun to get back to your code and see how you did before and how you would do it now. It’s just work that is unfortunate to lose. There are SVN solution such as Google’s Project Hosting. However I’m not interested in sharing my code or making it open source. Currently I’m hosting my own SVN server. So here comes my question: How and where do you store your private work/sourcecode? Requirements: Sourcecode versioning Backup Prefers free Edit: Remote access Edit: I have used Dropbox + TrueCrypt + SVN. Unfortunately you are limited to 5gb.

Folks there lack the formal training and basic understanding of computing concepts of databases, how computers work, what good software engineering practices are. Short of sending these ppl to college again, are there good online courses available that we can enroll them into so that they can upgrade their skills?   • Is it a bad practice to store large files (10 MB) in a database?

    I am currently creating a web application that allows users to store and share files, 1 MB - 10 MB in size. It seems to me that storing the files in a database will significantly slow down database access. Is this a valid concern? Is it better to store the files in the file system and save the file name and path in the database? Are there any best practices related to storing files when working with a database? I am working in PHP and MySQL for this project, but is the issue the same for most environments (Ruby on Rails, PHP, .NET) and databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL).

Google docs Drawing does the real-time collaboration, but is severely limited on features--focused on drawing rather than diagrams. I want something that supports connectors and such.     Can't seem to sort out how to get juju to point to the right source for charms, base install yields the following result when issued the following command. juju deploy --repository=examples mysql DNS lookup failed: address 'store.juju.ubuntu.com' not found: [Errno -2] Name or service not known. 2011-10-12 18:38:39,946 ERROR DNS lookup failed: address 'store.juju.ubuntu.com' not found: [Errno -2] Name or service not known. When trying to run it with juju deploy --repository=examples local:mysql I get this error: Charm 'local:oneiric/mysql' not found in repository /root/juju/examples 2011-10-12 18:53:57,311 ERROR Charm 'local:oneiric/mysql' not found in repository /root/juju/examples I've put the charm itself in the directory /root/juju/examples, and am running the command from /root/juju. What is wrong?

  • Carbonite Restore Error after Windows Update

    I recently installed Windows 8 on my main machine, and I'm have an issue with Carbonite. I can't restore any files from my previous OS, only files that where backed up from the current OS. I can download them from the web service, but I can't restore them with the client. The error says "You don't have the necessary security permissions to restore this file." (The file on top was backed up from the new install, while the one on bottom was from the old install.) I'm also having another issue, where Carbonite doesn't think it's running in admin mode. I think it's probably related to this error. When I right click to restore a file, I can't choose a location to restore to. I contacted Carbonite, and they said it's a known issue that apparently happens when upgrade from XP to 7, but they wouldn't help me since I'm running a beta OS. Hopefully one of you fine folks will have an idea.

  • Modern monitor technologies - need to find a new monitor

    I'm preparing to change my old LCD monitor for a new one. I have an old NEC 20WGX2 Pro based on an IPS panel. I'm looking for a screen that gives good color output but is very good at gaming at the same time (since it is its primary service). I tend to switch monitors between my different computers at home so it has to be multi purpose, hence IPS technology before. Now, where can I read on newest monitor technologies so I can make an informed decision? I need to find a best fit for myself and I have a very outdated knowledge at the moment.   • Will the Mac app store accept an app that reads and parses iPhone backups?

    I wanted to submit an app to the Mac app store that reads the iPhone backup dir and provides some useful functionality on user's voicemails and sms messages. The app parses and reads the backup mbdb files, and extracts the voicemail and sms sqlite db files as well as the voicemails to a temp directory. Is this kind of app likely to be rejected since it reads an unpublished format? It's not using any private APIs. I realize none of you are reviewers but wondering if I should even try to submit it to the store.

    I've been working on an online 2 player Tic Tac Toe solution for blackberries. both old and new. And so far I have html5 code that has a 3 x 3 layout that switches between x and o for the game mechanics. I believe I'm still missing a check for win function but my question is about the server side of this game. I'm not sure how to go about learning what exactly I want. how do you take what I have now, and make this into a functioning online game? I've been told WAMP is a good solution, as well as IIS. and its all really over my head, so i'm hoping to get a little more clarity as far as what I should focus on to bring this game to life.

    We have a repository of documents in HTML and text that we're looking to get into PDF format, but my boss (another developer) feels that writing this portion of the application will detract from the main development that we're doing at the moment. Is anyone aware of any services that will be able to do bulk conversions of these documents to PDF? Any services that will also provide thumbnails for the documents is something we're looking for as well.
