    I have a huge Excel table that I need to transform into paragraphs for a Word report, and I can't find an efficient way to do it The source looks like this: And I would ultimately need something like this, i.e. through a pivot table. Note that "Item C", which doesn't have any description values, is skipped: Now, to get there I believe I need to transform my source to this intermediate format, that has one description per line: How do I get from the source to the intermediate format in an efficient way? Or maybe there is an easier way to produce the target format that I don't know of? Any help is welcome!

  • Windows 7 is shutting down unexpectedly, according to the logs.

    Here's a message from my eventvwr EventLog (Windows Logs System): The previous system shutdown at 11:51:15 AM on ?7/?29/?2009 was unexpected. This is funny because I was wondering why the system shut down while I was playing Civilizations IV full screen. Now I know. It was unexpected. Has anyone encountered and resolved this? A little background: I am running Windows 7 RC inside VMWare Fusion 2 (just updated a few months back) on a MacBook (Bitterly not Pro) aluminum-body. Windows 7 occasionally will shut down. This isn't a quick turn-off, it's a shutdown where all the programs are exited, the system waits until they quit (and Civ4 doesn't prompt me to save), it even installed Windows Updates before restarting. And yes it is restarting right after the shutdown. Because I run a game in full screen mode I do not notice any dialog with a countdown timer or anything like that that might be a warning. As I have iStat on my dashboard widgets I can see about 8 temperature monitors. I have seen the CPU get up to 74C before, but during the shutdown, though it seemed hot to the touch (always is), it read 61C for the CPU, 60C for heatsink A, 50C for heatsink B and in the 30s-40s for the enclosure and harddrives. As I type this now, the temps are actually higher, so I don't think the temperature caused it. I have at least six such events dating first from 5/17 which was a week after installing Windows 7. I did find one information level warning from USER32 in the system log that says: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (DLAMBLIN-WIN7) has initiated the restart of computer DLAMBLIN-WIN7 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned) Reason Code: 0x80020002 Shutdown Type: restart Comment: And another 15 minutes before that from Windows Update: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Which I think kind of explains it. Though I don't know why restarting after an update would create an error event of "shutdown was unexpected", isn't that pretty odd? Now, how do I set it to never restart after an update unless I click something. Application of solution: As fretje reminded me, there's a couple of configurable settings for this, in windows 7 they're much in the same place as in Windows 2000 SP3 and XP SP1.   • Upgrading Ubuntu to 9.04 breaks ATI video card driver, VESA and ati/radeon drivers

    I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04, and it not only broke the ATI proprietary fglrx driver, but also the ability to use the VESA or open-source ati or radeon drivers. I have an ATI RV610 which is an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT. I have Linux Kernel 2.6.27-14-generic and 2.6.28-13-generic. With fglrx, vesa, ati and radeon, the Xserver hangs the machine as soon as it starts by invoking X or startx, which is seen by observing that caps lock doesn't work. There's nothing useful in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, no errors at all. This is with either kernel. When I download a new proprietary driver from ATI, I install it successfully on kernel 2.6.27, and it doesn't hang when X starts up, but it just shows a blank screen and does nothing. I also can't CTRL+ALT+Backspace out of X at this point. In all the years I've used ATI's Linux drivers, this has happened almost every time I've upgraded my kernel, but it's been fixable with much effort. This time I'm really stuck. Does anyone know how to fix these problems?

    I have another interesting issue... because of some issue with a lost password, I had to manually change the password to one of the accounts via and DOS hack. However, somehow in the process I now have a phantom username that I am asked to logon to when Windows first starts... This username doesn't exit. In order to login, I have to "change user" and manually type in the correct username. Is there a way that I can edit which username it prompts me for? I'd like to repair this without having to reinstall just yet.

  • PHP IDE for Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10

    I've installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my netbook and I'm wondering what would be a good IDE to use for mainly PHP development. I've used Komodo Edit in past Linux distributions but it doesn't seem to play well with Ubuntu Network Remix (it doesn't shows up in the remix "desktop", and I don't feel like opening the terminal and typing komodo every time I need to code). I'm considering Eclipse with a PHP plugin, but I've two big problems with Eclipse: I don't like the way it forces me to create a new project when I just want to edit a file. I'm not sure which PHP plugin I should install: Eclipse PDT, PHP Eclipse or Aptana - I don't really understand the differences between Eclipse PDT and PHP Eclipse. Which IDE would you recommend (doesn't need to be Eclipse)? Thanks in advance!

  • Wifi connection issues for Android with Linksys WRT54G

    I have had this Linksys WRT54G for many years now, and it has always worked without a hassle. But for some reason I am unable to connect my brand new Android phone (Magic). The wireless network is broadcast and simply secured using WPA PSK TKIP. My phone sees the network (with excellent signal strength) and correctly asks me for the WPA password. Then when it tries to connect it stays for a while on "Retrieving address..." (liberately translated from Dutch) and finally fails reading "Remember, secured with WPA". Does anybody know how to solve this issue? edit: the android phone is genuine (not modified/rooted or whatsoever).

  • Load Average runaway

    Is there any way to chase down lockups and runaway load averages? Every so often (pretty randomly) I'll get my load average spike up over 5 usually to around 10-15 and sometimes as high as 75 (dual core machine), and cause my system to lock for an indeterminate amount of time. The only thing I can possibly chase it to is using nVidia fakeraid (RAID-1) with JFS on top of that for my /home partition. Also I noticed that when my load averages spike, the power management system doesn't step up my processor speed from 1.6 to its maximum 2.13Ghz clock speed (not sure if this makes a huge difference with this problem). Any ideas?

Does anyone know where this option is?

  • Using "offline files sync" to sync with a local resource [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Which is the best application to Sync two folders? I have been trying get my machine (XP-Pro SP3) to sync files to a local USB drive in the same way as I can with mapped network drives. I particularly want to the sync to happen automatically when the USB is connected - in the same way that Off-line files will sync when the network drive comes on line. I can get a folder on the USB mounted as a network drive, but cannot get XP to offer the off-line files functionality. I have tried MS's SyncToy - it works as advertised, and will do scheduled and ad-hoc sync's, but does not seem to offer automatic syncs. I suspect I could do this by plugging my USB into another machine on my network - but that seems heavy handed. All insight appreciated - If you know this cannot be done please say so.

  • Best software for taking math notes at lectures

    Let me first just say that I know about La-Tex, and that doesn't fast enough. I use it for papers, but for "real-time" note taking it's just to heavy. I'm talking two math classes this semester. Linear algebra and discrete math, I just got a laptop with 10 hour battery life which makes me want to take notes on it!!! Openoffice with formula thingy is what I use now. Now I have to pay attention lol. Thanks.

  • Windows 7 random black screen when idle

    Occasionally, when I'm away from my computer for about 5 minutes, the computer screen will go black and all USB devices (keyboard/mouse) will lose power. Attempting to move the mouse or pressing keys does not 'wake up' the computer. This only started happening a few days ago but I'm not sure what changes I did could have caused this and I uninstalled programs (one by one) I installed before it started happening, but still having the same issue. The one thing I noticed different about my computer since it started happening is i've been getting random survey popups from www.insightexpress.com. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials scan, it picked up some Java related malware, I removed it but still the same issue. I'm running MBAM right now and will run SAS after.

    How do I achieve the equivalent of nc -q in Redhat 5? Details? nc -q -1 local host ${PORT} ${CMD} In Ubuntu, nc may be use as above, with the -q option. See manpage. -q after EOF on stdin, wait the specified number of seconds and then quit. If seconds is negative, wait forever. However, this option is not available in Redhat 5. See manpage.   • Enabling media streaming from a removable drive using Windows Media Player

    I have Windows Media Player set up to stream video to several devices in my apartment. I had recently run out of space so I purchased an external drive to store my videos/music etc. I can add the media to my WMP library and play it locally without issue. As soon as I try to access the media from another device that supports media streaming (Media player or another PC) only the media stored on a fixed drive is available. Is there a way to enable media sharing from a removable drive or somehow trick WMP that the media is stored on a fixed drive? I tried setting up a SymLink linking a directory on the fixed drive to the removable one but with the same result.

  • Windows XP update not working

    I have a problem with XP updating. It hangs when I try to search for updates on the website. But the automatic updates still work. And it's running IE6, so I'm trying to update to IE8, hoping that will fix the problems with the website. But when installing IE8 it just hangs at Installing Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP And if I try to install it manually, it hangs when installing the updates for IE8.     My pen will draw without the pen actually touching the tablet. I HAVE SEEN THE OTHER QUESTION about this, but it did NOT answer my question. I have uninstalled re-installed the driver 4 times, I have updated it every time, and my tablet/pen IS NEW. THEY ARE NOT/DO NOT HAVE BUTTONS THAT ARE BROKEN. If anyone can give me an answer besides "Get a new one", please tell me.

  • Is there a good dual monitor arm solution for iMac 27" i7s?

    I currently have an iMac 27" and am considering purchasing another to run in target display mode. My desk space is a little limited. Is there a dual monitor arm solution that can support the weight of two iMac 27" units (30.5 pounds (13.8 kg)) as well as their width (25.6 inches (65.0 cm)) in a side-by-side landscape configuration? I looked at the Ergotron LX Dual Side by Side but the iMacs appear to exceed the width and weight limit this device is rated for. I'm open to alternate solutions to arms, such as a multi-unit desk stand/mount, but a wall mount is not possible for me at this time. Thanks!
