  I have several Debian lenny computers. Two have nearly identical sources.list files. On both, I do regular update/safe-upgrades. On one it always goes smoothly. • Installing Tcl and Tix in OSX

  Hello, I'm having trouble installing Tix on OSX the version of Tix I am using is 8.4.3. I try to install it by following the instructions in the README % ./configure % make % make install And iat the very start of make it gives me: xXpm.o tixUnixWm.o -L/Library/Frameworks/Tcl.framework   Whenever I use a secure proxy with Google Chrome I get ERR_PROXY_CERTIFICATE_INVALID, I tried a lot of different scenarios and versions. There are a several ways to accomplish this, I tried: a custom Node.js script; stunnel; node-spdyproxy (OK, this involves SPDY too, but later... the problem is the same); [...] The browser Then I run Google Chrome with: google-chrome --proxy-server=https://localhost:8080 http://superuser.com to load, say, http://superuser.com. The issue All I get is: Error 136 (net::ERR_PROXY_CERTIFICATE_INVALID): Unknown error. in the window, and something like: [13633:13639:1017/182333:ERROR:cert_verify_proc_nss.cc(790)] CERT_PKIXVerifyCert for localhost failed err=-8179 in the console. Note: this is not the big red warning that complains about insecure certificates. Now, I have to admit that I'm quite n00b for what concerns certificates and such, if I'm missing some fundamental points, please let me know.

• Basic Apache setup is not seeing my site

  Sorry that is a horrible thread subject, but I cannot think of a better more descriptive subject. We are running a Fedora 11 server that is currently hosting some CRM on it. I want to use a VirtualHost directive to add another site to the server. So I created this conf: /etc/httpd/conf.d/mysite.ourdomain.com.conf And here is the content: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mysite.ourdomain.com DocumentRoot /www/mysite ServerAdmin [email protected] ErrorLog /var/log/mysite.ourdomain.com-error.log CustomLog /var/log/mysite.ourdomain.com-access.log common </VirtualHost> I restarted apache, getting the following warning: [warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts From what I read, this warning is not related and I can ignore it and my site should still be up and running, correct? (I'll troubleshoot this error later if so) Well I have our DNS server setup to point mysite.ourdomain.com to goto this server. I can ping it and it points to the correct LAN IP, etc.. Now when I try to access it in the browswer I get nothing. It just says Connecting... and never gets there. If I try mysite.ourdomain.com or the IP address, neither one doesn't get there. It's a very simple and basic apache setup so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... Like I said, the other thing that is running on this server is a crm and it's .conf looks something like this: Listen x.x.x.x:443 <VirtualHost x.x.x.x:443> ServerAdmin [email protected] ServerName crm.ourdomain.com ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/ourdomain/crm-error.log CustomLog /var/log/httpd/ourdomain/crm-access.log common DocumentRoot /www/ourdomain/crm <IfModule mod_dir.c> DirectoryIndex /index.php </IfModule> </VirtualHost> There is also some LDAP authentication stuff in that config but I left it out cause I assumed it wasn't necessary to post. • Can one really fry a monitor by setting the wrong HorizSync and VertRefresh?

  I've encountered this problem on several different systems with several different monitors: a monitor functions perfectly under Windows. I install a Linux and the max resolution is at some impossibly low value, mostly 640x480, changing it in Xorg.conf doesn't work. The X.org log file then shows that the driver cannot determine the correct refresh rate for the monitor, so it ignores everything in Xorg.conf and just loads in some default minimalistic mode. Googling the problem leads to an easy solution: set the HorizSync and VertRefresh in Xorg.conf, and everything works. The problem seems to be a common one, and I've seen dozens of results recommending the solution. Each of them contains the warning that you should use the value ranges provided with the monitor. Because if you don't, and your video card sends a signal with the wrong refresh rate, this can damage your monitor. Of course, you don't have a user manual for your monitor any more. If you are lucky to find one on the attic or on the net, it doesn't contain any information about the supported refresh rate. So you just type in the value suggested in the solution description, which varies wildly depending on your source, and cross your fingers. You restart, and... ... you've set the wrong values. So the monitor shows a short message like "input signal out of range", and you do a hard restart, repair your Xorg.conf in recovery mode, and everything is fine, including your monitor. So does this warning reflect a real possibility, or is it just a geeky urban legend? Or is it something which used to happen in the past, before manufacturers started protecting the monitors against it? Is it technically possible with every monitor technology, or is it maybe something which can only happen to a CRT? If you think that it's true, why? Have you ever witnessed a monitor die from the wrong refresh config, or have you read of it in a reputable source?

• Win 7: apps crash, then explorer crashes, then services fail, then boom

  Periodically, every 2-3 days one of my systems will go haywire: every app will crash search will fail via the start menu and then explorer will fail. Restarting explorer via taskmanager will cause it to fail again, then it'll BSOD and restart. The eventlog for when this happens goes something like this every time: ERROR: Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188 (supposedly not a problem) WARNING: The maximum file size for session "ReadyBoot" has been reached...   We setup password Policies in Active Directory to Expire peoples passwords after so many days. Well it looks like the time has come for the Expiration of the Passwords and people are getting locked out... There has been no warning of user passwords about to expire. They just come in to work and they cannot log in, the phones no longer connect, nothing. Reset the password and all is good. Some of the users are locked out, though most are not, they just cannot log in. On setting the password Expiration, I didn't see anything about nor warning the users of the impending expiration. Seems like it used to warn you 15 days or so before it would expire. Clients range from: WinXP, WinVista, Win7 and Server 2008R2 Remote Desktop Services. How can I make sure my users are warned of the Expiration? I have already gone through and adjusted the php.ini file, but when the TUT speaks of the php_admin_value open_basedir "/var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs:/tmp:/usr/share/pear:/local/PEAR" in my /var/www/vhosts/example.com/conf/httpd.include file I kind of get lost. There are several httpd.include files in that directory, all preceded with very long numerical strings. All I want to do is have an email attachment in my form.... Any insight or similar experiences shared would be greatly appreciated.

• ubuntu 9.10 installer doesn't recognize the hard drive

  I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 and am trying to install it on a fairly modern system with a Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 motherboard. Ubuntu 9.04 installed fine and still will when I stick that disc in, but 9.10 doesn't see my hard drive (western digital 250GB). If I boot from the disc, I can install gparted and it does recognize the drive, but when I try to start the install process from the live disc, Ubuntu again doesn't recognize the hard drive. I checked /var/log/messages and see this: Nov 12 17:28:08 ubuntu activate-dmraid: Serial ATA RAID disk(s) detected. If this was bad, boot with 'nodmraid'. • Rebuild Fedora 19 ISO adding Kickstart for USB install

  I am attempting to edit a Fedora 19 DVD ISO to add a kickstart file. I then need this ISO burnt to a USB stick for instillation. The error I get when booting is Warning: Could not boot. Warning: /dev/root does not exist To try and determine which part of the process is failing I have broken the process down in to separate stages. Step 1: Burn the original ISO "Fedora-19-x86_64-DVD.iso" (Available - here) to a pendrive and see if that will install. dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdc Burning this image was successful and it installed without issue. Step 2: Exctract the ISO, repackage it and burn it to a pendrive and see if that will install. PLEASE NOTE: The final command in this section has been broken down in to multiple lines for ease of reading, in fact it was run as a single command on one line. mkdir -p /mnt/linux mount -o loop /tmp/linux-install.iso /mnt/linux cd /mnt/ tar -cvf - linux | (cd /var/tmp/ && tar -xf - ) cd /var/tmp/linux xorriso -as mkisofs -R -J -V "NewFedoraImage" -o ouput/file.iso -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -isohybrid-mbr /usr/share/syslinux/isohdpfx.bin . This iso was then burnt to a pendrive as before. dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdc This ISO burnt to the pen drive with no problem and will boot. I then see the fedora options screen. After choosing either "Install Fedora 19" or "Test this media & install Fedora 19" I then receive the errors highlighted above. This means the kickstart file is not to blame, but repackaging the ISO. Is there something I am missing in the repackaging process? Any input would be great! NOTE: If it is of any help, I attempted Step 2 with an Ubuntu server ISO and the process was successful.

• Can't connect to Synology DiskStation through HTTPS when using Windows 7 Import

  a little background to my problem: I have a Synology DiskStation 213j that I use as a backup/data storage solution. When I'm at work, I would like to push and pull files from my DiskStation but I can't use VPN which is forbidden for outgoing connections. So I wanted to try to use HTTPS so I can at least connect securely to the web interface. I mostly use Chrome which uses the Windows Certificate Store. So I tried importing a self-signed certificate into it, without success. I still get a warning in Chrome telling me the connection is not secure because it can't be verified. When I import the certificate into Firefox though, it works and I can connect through HTTPS. I checked my domain on this site: http://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html It shows no errors, only a warning that the certificate is self-signed. Which is OK in this case. Any got any idea why importing the certificate into Windows 7 doesn't work? I tried Right-Click domain.mydomain.de.crt File --> Install certificate --> Next --> both options here (in case of "Place certificate in following store:" I selected "Third Party Root Certificate Authorities") to no avail.

• Uninstall php5 installed from source

  I have tried to install php5 from source , and it worked... Then for some reason need to install the official packets, so i tried a make uninstall and for my surprise there is such make uninstall... so i tried delete all the installed files by hand. Stop. I have tried reinstall and purge all php related packages via aptitude with not success. OS: Debian Squeeze. uname -a Linux desktop 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 22:40:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux Any idea how to fix that?

• Hugepages not utilized by MySQL 5.0, CentOS 5

  I've set up Hugepages, but i'm not seeing any of them reserved. Have I missed a step, or for some particular reason, is MySQL is unable to utilize the Hugepages? I have not created a mount of hugetlbfs, although from what I read, MySQL would not call pages in such a manner. If I'm wrong, please let me know, as that would be a trivial solution. Almost all my MySQL tables are using InnoDB. NOTE: I created a hugetlbfs, no change as expected. Is it possible that rebooting would rectify this situation? I would not want to go through the procedure, as this is high availability, but would do so if necessary.
