• Trouble switching to Dvorak on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've decided to switch to Dvorak on my Ubuntu machine, but I'm having some trouble: First, I attempted to do this through the GUI -- System Settings - Keyboard Layout - add layout (plus sign) - English(programmer Dvorak). This didn't work at first, so I restarted my machine. It seemed to work at the password prompt (if only because QWERTY did not), but I couldn't get it to accept my password. I used the virtual keyboard option to enter my password with mouse clicks (the virtual keyboard was using the programmer's Dvorak Standard) and was able to get in that way. Once logged in, however, I was back to QWERTY. Second, I tried to switch on the command prompt -- $ loadkeys /usr/lib/kbd/keytables/dvorak.map The error message I received was "Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console " Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I've looked for a solution for these problems, but couldn't find anything.

• Wifi disabled on dell Inspiron Mini 10 (1018)

  My netbook cannot access the wifi network, and I cannot enable it. This is the second time this has happenned. The first time, it came back after a lot of restarts and BIOS factory resets. Ubuntu sometimes simply won't connect to any wifi networks, and other times it will say that the wireless is blocked by a hardware switch. I have tried pressing F2 and doing a BIOS reset, with no luck. sudo rfkill list all gives : 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 1: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes

  I have upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10 and now my WiFi doesn't work. It takes a lot of time to connect but when connected, connection is quickly lost again. In Ubuntu 13.04 worked fine. • 12.10 x64 - RTL8188CE - Intermittent/Slow Internet Connection

  I have to reset my internet connection often to get it to work. When it does work, it's definitely slower than when I'm on my Windows installation. My computer uses an RTL8188CE wireless card from Realtek. I'm running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 12.10. Power management is not on. I've read on other sites that some people fixed the issue pertaining to this wireless card by downloading and installing the drivers from the Realtek site, but it seems as if that only helped people with 32-bit installations. Anyone have any luck with this specific wireless card?

• How to get current gnome keyboad layout from terminal

  For usage in a bash script, I need to get the gnome keyboard layout the user is currently using. For example if the user sets its keyboard layout to en-us , I need a bash command that prints me this. How can I get that information? Update: setxkbmap -query is unfortunatelly not working. Below is the ouput with the en (first command) and the de (second command) layout activated. • I'm not sure if this is a valid Ubuntu bug to file

  I was in the process of filing an bug on Launchpad, but I had second thoughts because there were so many threatening warnings of the effect, "Don't file a bug report unless you're sure it's a bug, and you should really provide a package name". The problem I have, and I've had it for years, is the following: When I'm installing Ubuntu, it asks me to type in my location before it asks me what my keyboard layout is. Using a QWERTY keyboard but with the buttons popped of and in the Dvorak order, this is annoying, because it is assumes I am using a QWERTY keyboard, and so I have to guess at where all the QWERTY keys are to spell my city's name. It seems like it would make more sense to switch the order of these two questions. (I'll be the first person to admit that this is a very minor problem that has probably wasted less than 2 minutes of my life in total -- but it's the principle of the thing :p) So my question is: is this order there for a particular reason, and if it isn't, is it appropriate to file it as a bug, and under which package name?

• Broadcom BCM4313 working, but terribly slow

  Hi all, I've installed ubuntu on a Asus 1015 netbook. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless adapter, which i had to install with the Additional Drivers application. It apparently installed fine and connects to our wireless network, but it only works at a "funny" speed range that goes from 367Bytes to a peak of 3Kb in its best moments. I know for sure the problem is neither the network nor the hardware. Network speeds are normal under windows on this laptop and in other computers with ubuntu aswell. lspci says the card is a BCM4313 model, but the Addittional Drivers Manager says these packecege contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and BCM4322 based hardware seems like it installed the wrong driver... Is there anything I can do? I'm not concerned about compiling the driver or stuff like that, but I'm not sure on where to start... any help or guidance will be very, very appreciated.

• 12.04 64 bit: Keybord not responding for about 20 seconds at startup/beginning of session

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. When I get at the login screen and try to type the password for my user, I cannot type anything for about 20 seconds. After that, the keyboard starts responding and everything works fine. Mouse is responding normally as well as all buttons of the login interface (time/calendar, session selection (Unity/Unity 2D), etc.). What could be the reason for this behavior? How can I solve this temporary freeze of the keyboard so that I can type my password immediately without having to wait each time? Thanks for your time. EDIT: I tried auto login, but the problem is still there: the Desktop loads but even there, if I try to type something in the dash or anywhere else, I must wait about 20 seconds before I can actually start typing. Can the issue be related to some keyboard modules that get loaded little bit "too late"?

• WIFI card intel r 2200 will not work

  I have installed 12.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro. Wifi card does not work. Have tried various threads but none have the same problem. • Mouse disables on key press, but touchpad doesn't

  My mouse cursor disables for 1-2 seconds when the keyboard is used. This can make gaming especially difficult. The touchpad is fine; I can use it at the same time as the keyboard. Doing some forum searching, I can see that going to mouse and touchpad touchpad disable touchpad when typing works for the touchpad, but I still have the problem when using the mouse. I've tried using synaptiks, and setting the 'automatically switch off touchpad on keyboard activity' time to 0 seconds doesn't seem to work either. I'd appreciate any help.

I have changed the Keyboard Model in System SettingsHardwareInput DevicesKeyboard to Hewlett Packard Internet keyboard but doesn't seems to help. I have also Compiz-Config-Setting-Manager installed but I don't know how to make the right keyboard setting. • Disabled WiFi but it keeps re-enabling itself; want it to stay disabled

  I have an Alienware X51 desktop with a wireless card, I have it connected via ethernet and want to permanently disable WiFi from ever using itself. When running Windows, I go to device manager and rightclick-disable the Wireless card and that takes care of my problem. Is there a similar method using Ubuntu 14.04? For now, I click on the network icon in the system tray and uncheck 'Enable wifi' but it seems to turn itself back on as I use my computer, I think I have the incident isolated to something with Steam. It seems like after I start the Steam client it always is re-enabled. Hopeful answer: Just disable/remove/block wireless card from ever working.

• Left and right keys acting crazy on Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix?

  Hi guys, I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix on my HP Mini 1000. Everything worked fine right up until I tried typing - apparently the left and right arrow keys on my keyboard are uncontrollable. Everything I type ends up looking messed up because the left and right keys keep automatically inserting themselves into everything I type. This also happens when I click on, say, "File" on Firefox. It starts rotating between all the different menu options even though I'm not pressing anything on the keyboard. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Is this a problem with the keyboard itself?

It worked fine under 11.10 and did so for two weeks on 12.04. But since yesterday, I am unable to connect to my wireless network at home. First I have to connect via Cisco VPN using my university account. This is quite annoying and I'm unable to download apps via the software center when using the Cisco VPN client.   I just got Ubuntu and I am really really really a linux novice. I can't get the wireless to work? I played around with it until I saw it says "wireless firmware missing" - Hardware address 00:14:A5:6A:17:C2. On my laptop there is a button that looks like a little antenae that means the wireless is on. The funny thing is that this button does not seem to do anything right now - the light is not lit up and does not light up. Any thoughts you have on getting this going are appreciated!

• Installed Ubuntu on a macbook pro and am running into errors with internet

  I recently installed Ubuntu (64 bit, 12.04) on a mid-2012 Macbook Pro, and I've been having some really annoying issues. Chief among them is that my wireless doesnt seem to function properly. I've installed Ubuntu on this mac before, and again this time the drivers for the wireless card were missing. I, using something along the lines of sudo su apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer A new problem I've been experiencing however is that none of the networks available in my home show up. I've been able to connect theto themm by going into "Connect to hidden networks" and typing in the network name and password, but when I restart the computer my network (let's just name it "Network1"), doesnt show up. I tried going into "Edit Connections" and it shows up in the wireless tab, but it is never connected to automatically or shows up in the drop-down menu. Any help?

• Erratic typing in Ubuntu 13.04

  I recently upgraded to 13.04 and have noticed that my keyboard randomly drops keystrokes. Furthermore, it will occasionally cause the last pressed key to "stick", leaving me with "typng that looks lik thisssssssssssssssssssssss". I do not believe that this is a hardware problem, as the keyboard worked just fine under 12.10 a few days ago. In addition, there are no Universal Settings turned on that would be causing this problem. I came across this unanswered Ask Ubuntu post that seems to identify part of my problem: Missing keystrokes in ubuntu 13.04 I was able to work around the repeated keystrokes problem by turning off the "key presses repeat when key is held down" option under the keyboard settings, but this is not an acceptable solution in the long term. Any thoughts?

I'm looking for a store to buy a suitable adaptor in locally and I can't find that particular adaptor - but I can see a Belkin F7D4101az. I think this is simply a newer model - but a Google search for "ubuntu belkin f7d4101az" brings no results - not even people trying to get it to work. Nothing. So I didn't want to purchase it without being sure. • Low-level Keyboard Hooks/SendInput with Winkey+L possible? (workstation lockout is intercepted in Vi

  I work on a project called UAWKS (Unofficial Apple Wireless Keyboard Support) that helps Windows users use Apple's bluetooth keyboard. One of the main goals of UAWKS is to swap the Cmd key (which behaves as Winkey in Windows) with Ctrl, allowing users to do Cmd+C for copy, Cmd+T for new tab, etc. It is currently developed using AutoHotkey, which worked pretty well under Windows XP. However, on Vista and Windows 7, Cmd+L causes problems: Regardless of low-level keyboard hooks, Winkey+L is always intercepted by Windows and normally locks the workstation... You can disable workstation locking with this registry hack, but pressing Winkey+L still can't be rebound in AHK Pressing Winkey+L leaves Winkey in the Keydown state until the next (additional) Winkey Up. Simulating a Keyup event doesn't seem to work either! It seems that Winkey+L is a special chord that messes everything else up. I've looked through the AHK source code, and they try to address this problem in SendKey() in keyboard_mouse.cpp (near line 883 in v1.0.48.05), but it doesn't work. I wrote up my own low-level keyboard hook application in C#, and I see the same problem. Has anyone else run into this? Is there a workaround?

• How can I fix my WRT54GL's constant crashing?

  I have a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router (the old blue-and-black) whose underside indicates it is Version 2. I've noticed that, on wireless mode, if I am on a Skype call or in a Google Hangout, the wireless aspect will crash completely. In addition, if I am connected via an ethernet cord, my quality (that is, how my voice is received) tanks very quickly. I suspect this is due, in part, to my internet connectivity itself (I'm on Comcast instead of Verizon FiOS, as I'd prefer) but I'd like to stop my wireless router's wireless capability from crashing. I considered a firmware upgrade, but it looks to me as if I am upgraded. Short of manually running ethernet all over my house, I'm not sure what to do. How can I solve my wireless router's issues? If the answer is "buy a new router," then that's valid, as well, in my opinion.

• force connection using USB adapter

  Hi all I am new to Linux, so even though this is probably a simple problem it remains unsolved after more then 3 hours of googling :-( I run running ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an Acer Aspire 5520G . the laptop has a wireless adapter, but since I wanted better range I got an Edimax EW-7711USN USB adapter. now , when running ifconfig I am able to see both adapters where as the laptop native adapter is listed as wlan0 and the usb adapter is listed as wlan1. but listing available networks from the wireless network applet , all the connection are listed under wlan0 , the usb adapter is costencly listed as disconnected. this is what I have been trying to do so far 1) ifconfig wlan0 down - I got disconnected from the net but still was not able to get the usb to connect 2) used the wireless connection dialog to connect to a hidden network with the usb adapter - I was able to connect to the network but with no Internet access 3) disable wireless using the laptop function button - both wireless adapters where disabled can anyone suggest a way to connect to to the wireless network using the USB adapter rather then the built in one ? • Is there a Novatel Wireless Modem Emulator or something similar?

  Novatel Wireless provides their NovaCore SDK for developers wishing to interface with their line of modems. I'm currently developing an open source managed wrapper for it, but I'm having difficulties with testing. I own a Novatel MiFi and have mobile broadband service through Sprint, but that can only get me so far. The device is already activated, thus I can't test the network activation features of the NovaCore SDK. There are also certain features only available for HSPA modems, which I am not able to get in my area. Is there an emulator capable of emulating a Novatel Wireless modem so that I can test my library without physical hardware and an actual data connection? If not, do you have any other suggestions that might help in this situation? I've contacted Novatel Wireless via email and their developer forum, but have not received a response. Thanks!
