• Deadlock error in INSERT statement

  We've got a web-based application. There is a time-bound database operation (INSERTs and UPDATEs) in the application which takes more time to complete, hence this particular flow has been changed into Java Thread so it will not wait (block) for the complete database operation to be completed. My problem is, if more than 1 user come across this particular flow, I'm facing the following error thrown by PostgreSQL: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: ERROR: deadlock detected Detail: Process 13560 waits for ShareLock on transaction 3147316424; blocked by process 13566. Process 13566 waits for ShareLock on transaction 3147316408; blocked by process 13560. Above error is consistently thrown in INSERT statements. Additional Information: 1) I have PRIMARY KEY defined in this table. 2) There are FOREIGN KEY references in this table. 3) Separate database connection is passed to each Java Thread. • How to debug unreleased COM references from managed code?

  I have been searching for a tool to debug unreleased COM references, that usually cause e.g. Word/Outlook processes to hang in memory in case the code does not call Marshal.ReleaseCOMObject on all COM instances correctly. (Outlook 2007 partially fixes this for outlook addins, but this is a generic question). Is there a tool that would display at least a list of COM references (by type) held by managed code? Ideally, it would also display memory profiler-style object trees helping to debug where the reference increment occured. Debugging at runtime is not that important as being able to attach to a hung process - because the problem typically occurs when the code is done with the COM interface and someone forgot to release something - the application (e.g. winword) hangs in memory even after the calling managed application quits. If such tool does not exist, what is the (technical?) reason? It would be very useful for debugging a lot of otherwise very hard to find problems when working with COM interop.

• Brainstorming: Weird JPA problem, possibly classpath or jar versioning problem???

  I'm seeing a weird error message and am looking for some ideas as to what the problem could be. I'm sort of new to using the JPA. I have an application where I'm using Spring's Entity Manager Factory (LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean), EclipseLink as my ORM provider, connected to a MySQL DB and built with Maven. I'm not sure if any of this matters..... When I deploy this application to Glassfish, the application works as expected. The problem is, I've created a set of stand alone unit tests to run outside of Glassfish that aren't working correctly. I get the following error (I've edited the class names a little) com.xyz.abc.services.persistence.entity.MyEntity cannot be cast to com.xyz.abc.services.persistence.entity.MyEntity The object cannot be cast to a class of the same type? How can that be? • Generic Text Only printer driver mangles control codes

  If an escape character (or most other characters < 0x20) is sent to the generic / text only printer it gets printed as a period. Using the code in the WinDDK is it possible to 'correct' this behaviour so that it passes it through unmodified? The general scenario for this is that some application ('user app') outputs a document to a windows printer. My application requires this data in plain text form and so what I do is run a generic / text only printer that talks to a virtual com port. This generally works fine except where the 'user app' outputs binary data to the print queue without using the correct mechanism (which seems to work fine on some printer drivers, such as the Epson POS ones, but not the generic / text only one). I've tried changing the print processor selection without success and also tried looking at the gtt files to see if I could readily map in these characters as though they were printable, but the minidriver tool won't let me do that. Any suggestions?

• Possible uncommitted transactions causing "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired" erro

  My application requires a user to log in and allows them to edit a list of things. However, it seems that if the same user always logs in and out and edits the list, this user will run into a "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired." error. I've read comments about increasing the timeout period but I've also read a comment about it possibly caused by uncommitted transactions. And I do have one going in the application. I'll provide the code I'm working with and there is an IF statement in there that I was a little iffy about but it seemed like a reasonable thing to do. I'll just go over what's going on here, there is a list of objects to update or add into the database. New objects created in the application are given an ID of 0 while existing objects have their own ID's generated from the DB. If the user chooses to delete some objects, their IDs are stored in a separate list of Integers. Once the user is ready to save their changes, the two lists are passed into this method. By use of the IF statement, objects with ID of 0 are added (using the Add stored procedure) and those objects with non-zero IDs are updated (using the Update stored procedure). After all this, a FOR loop goes through all the integers in the "removal" list and uses the Delete stored procedure to remove them. A transaction is used for all this. I am looking for a convenient way to be able to automate build-deploy-lanuch process. The process is: Package application & sign it Load it on the device Start debugging session in Eclipse With the newest version of BlackBerry plugin for Eclipse, step 1. is almost painless, but I would like to get rid of dialogs that I am missing some debug files. Step 2. and step 3. must be performed manually. Ideally I would like to turn it all into one script, Eclipse macro, whatever.... Has anyone tried something like this with any success?

• noob question : reading xml from url link by using php

  Hello, I am trying to build an authentication plugin that uses php/xml. My application can communicate to another application by sending this : http://tst.example.net/remote/validate_user.jhtml?ticket=$ticket_value in return i get a formatted xml document. i want to be able to parse that document. I googled and read a bit around here , but what i could find is that using php_simplexml i can do the following $xml = simplexml_load_file("test.xml"); echo $xml-getName() . ""; foreach($xml-children() as $child) { echo $child-getName() . ": " . $child . ""; } my question is : i don't have a test.xml file, it is a url that i am reading/parsing, any way how to get the info from the url, not a file. I know this is a very noobish question, i would appreciate the help

• Javamelody with Tomcat and MySql

  I have setup a web application in Tomcat with Javamelody and MySql. I am able to see the JDBC connection details under system info so I know that Javamelody is able to connect to the database. I have executed select/update statements from my application but nothing is ever shown on the monitoring page under statistics sql. I have executed "show full processlist" using the same user as my database connection and it works fine. I can't work out what I am doing wrong. Any ideas?

  My application (Asp.Net MVC) has great interaction with the user interface (jQuery/js). For example, setting various searches charts, moving the gadgets on the screen and more .. I of course want to keep all data for each user. So that data will be available from any page in the Dumaine and the user will accepts his preferences. Now I keep all data in a cookie because it did not seem logical asynchronous access to the server each time the user changes something and thet happens a lot.When the user logout from the application I save the cookie to the database. The problem is the cookie becomes very large. The thought that this huge cookie is attached to each server request makes me feel that my attitude is wrong. Another problem cookies have size limit. It varies from your browser but I definitely have been close to the border - my cookie easily become 4kb Is there another solution?

• UI Terminology: Logon vs Login

  I am crafting an application and cannot decide whether to use the terms Login/out or Logon/off. Is there a more correct option between these two? Should I use something else entirely (like "Sign on/off"). In terms of usability, as long as I am consistent it probably doesn't matter which terms I choose, but I did wonder about the origins of the terms - and whether one or another makes more grammatical sense. I also care deeply about the application I am creating, and want to take the time to investigate all aspects of its user experience.

• What software do you use for letter templating and printing?

  In our LOB application there is a very important use case of printing letters, which are then printed and posted out from a mail house (thousands per day). The current situation is that the letter templates are created in Word 97 and fields are mail merged from values in database using a VB.Net application that basically uses word automation. But depending on Word 97 is not a good idea today. We only have a couple of PCs that have Word 97 installed as rest of the company has moved to Office 2007. What software or technology (compatible with .Net) is available today that best suits this scenario. Is it better to do the same thing but move to Word 2007 or PDF or something else. Price may not be a factor. The important thing is that the letter templates must be designed by business users and data to fill placeholders come from DB. A bonus would be to import the hundreds of existing Word 97 letter templates without rewriting them from scratch.

So, I am planning to move it to a x64 platform as 64-bit process. So will this help with the out of memory exceptions. I was reading this article from MSDN Memory limits for Windows So, my question is if I compile a 64bit .Net application, will it have IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE set as default (As the article suggests)? i.e will I be able to take advantage of the 8GB user-mode virtual address space?

  I'm writing a WPF application and trying to bind an image to my view model with the following XAML: <Image Source="{Binding Author.IconUrl, IsAsync=True}" /> The problem is that the image URLs are defined by users and can often refer to images hosted on intranet web servers. When the WPF application is run remotely, it locks up while trying to resolve the images that are now unreachable. I thought the "IsAsync" binding property would cause the load to happen in the background, but it appears that the DNS resolution may still happen in the main thread? What can I do to keep my app from locking, even if the images are unreachable? Thanks, Corey

• Using a UIPickerView to make a CoreData Relationship

  Okay, so I have a fairly simple application set up. I have two different CoreData Entities, Games and Platforms, each have one attribute: name, and they have a one-to-many relationship between them. Platforms are populated on the first launch of the application, and will never change as a result of user input. I'm working on my Add view to let the user add new games to their personal database, and each game should select from a platform. The add view itself is a grouped table view with static custom cells. Tapping the platform cell should advance the user to another view to select the platform. My thought is that UIPickerView seems like a logical choice for the control, since the Platform list is static, but I'm not sure how to use it with CoreData. Even if I construct a fetch request to get the Platform objects and extract the strings out, how do I go about linking the new Game object to the original Platform object?

  Hi, I recently started to use AjaxControlToolkit v3.0.30930.0 in my application together with System.Web.Extension 3.5. My development environment is Visual Studio 2005, .NET Framework 2.0 and the development language is C#. The Ajax control I used is the ModalPopupExtender. I also used the UpdatePanel and updateprogress controls. Everything is working fine on my development machine. But I got a problem after I deployed the application to a server which does not have System.Web.Extension 3.5 installed, which is understandable. My question is, can the ajax controls I used work without System.Web.Extension 3.5? Say I revert the ajaxcontroltoolkit back to version 1.0.61025.0? I don't have the option to install .NET 3.5 as yet. Thank you for your help. John

• Programming an Event listener for files in a directory on Linux

  On Ubuntu linux, when you watch a flash video, it gets saved temporarily in the /tmp as flv files while the video buffers. I use vlc to directly play these files. Currently, I have scripted a shortcut that directly scans and opens the latest file in /tmp with vlc, when clicked. But, I want to program a Java application that will continually monitor this /tmp directory for any new flv files, and open it in vlc automatically. I know I can use Runtime.exec() to open the VLC application with the flv files. But, I DO NOT want to run a while(true) loop (with sleep) to scan for files. How can I make use of Event Handling (Java or any other language) on Linux to complete this task?

• Using Connection Based State with Apache2

  I am writing an HTTPS based application using Apache2 as the web server, and python as the language (not sure which framework or Apache2 mod yet). After clients (which are not web browsers) first establish an HTTPS connection to the server, they are expected to send an authentication message. If authentication is successful, they are able to send more commands, until the connection is closed (HTTP 1.1 will be used, with a long keep alive time). My question is, is it possible to have state associated with the connection? I don't want the client to have to send cookies or session ids -- the HTTPS application should be able to figure out the session based on the connection that each request belongs to...the question is how?

  I have written an HTML Application (hta file) and am wondering if there is a way to embed an icon file into the hta file itself. I have seen html emails that include embedded graphic files, is there any way to do this with html applications and icons? HTA files have an HTA:APPLICATION tag that allows you to specify an icon, but I want to have only a single file for download. I don't want to have an external icon file. Is this possible? • Flex - Problem with auto resizing datagrid

  Hi All I'm trying to create a datagrid which will resize vertically to ensure all the renderers are displayed in full. Additionally, Renderers are of variable height Renderers can resize themselves Generally speaking, the flow of events is as follows : One of the item renderers resizes itself (normally in response to a user click etc) It dispatches a bubbling event which the parent datagrid picks up The DataGrid attempts to resize to ensure that all renderers remain visible in full. I'm currently using this code within the datagrid to calculate the height: height = measureHeightOfItems(0, dataProvider.length ) + headerHeight; This appears to get an incorrect height. I've tried a number of variations including callLater ( to ensure the resize has completed so measure can work correctly), and overriding meausre() and calling invalidateSize() / validateSize(), but neither works. Below are 3 classes which will illustrate the problem. Clicking the button in the item renderers resizes the renderer. The grid should also expand so that all of the 3 renderers are shown in their entirety. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.   edit: IIS6; I'm not sure IIS7 is an option in the immediate future... From a developer angle, I am constantly changing my IIS settings, or need to merge settings from other teams into different VMs. The "Save Configuration to Disk" has never really worked well for me. Because we are making lots of small changes, web installation projects have never really worked either... Tools aimed for the web-admin aren't necessarily a good fit for the developer - we have different aims and needs. Does anyone have a script / tool / utility that would allow us to quickly configure IIS? In particular: remove everything (start clean) add a load of virtual directories, each mapped to application base paths set as an application set the app-pool (we'll assume the app pool already exists) set the ASP.NET version to 2.x if needed from some find of flat input list (any format would do).
