• Dealing with unwanted port numbers on localhost when debugging in Visual Studio

  So when I'm trying to debug a project in Visual Studio, I'll often have 1 or more services that I need to call. These services are separate projects and I'll launch them in separate instances of VS. ASP dev server kindly launches them with temporary port numbers attached. This would be fine except for my programs are looking for an IP without a port attached. (Typically it's as simple as "localhost"!) I've coped by using web config settings and changing the xml to use the port number while debugging. This still doesn't always work and occasionally I'll still have to fudge it and insert port numbers as strings in code! UGH! Then I have to remember to undo all the port herding code before deployment... I want to stop doing this: string _strBaseURL = String.Format("http://{0}:2277", ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["myservice_ip"].ToString()); What is the best practice here? Am I doomed to port herding while debugging VS apps?

• Multithreaded program in C: calculating thread stack space

  Situation: I am writing a program in C that maintains a number of threads. Once a thread ends, a new one is created. Each thread forks - the child runs a PHP process via exec() and the parent waits for it to finish. Each PHP process takes the next item from a queue, processes it and exits. Basic code: http://www.4pmp.com/2010/03/multitasking-php-in-parallel/ Problem: The PHP processes are Symfony tasks and Symfony requires a fairly huge amount of memory. How can I safely calculate the required stack space for each thread so that PHP processes will have enough memory? The memory limit set in php.ini is 128Mb so should I allocate this much space in the stack?

  When implementing compareTo(), does the degree of "difference" need to be taken into account? For instance, if I have 3 objects, C1, C2, and C3, such that C1 < C2 < C3. Should C1.compareTo(C2) return an integer that is less than C2.compareTo(C3)?   This is a complicated situation (for me) that I'm hopeful someone on here can help me with. I've done plenty of searching for a solution and have not been able to locate one. This is essentially my situation... (I've trimmed it down because if someone can help me to create this query I can take it from there.) TABLE articles (article_id, article_title) TABLE articles_tags (row_id, article_id, tag_id) TABLE article_categories (row_id, article_id, category_id) All of the tables have article_id in common. I know what all of the tag_id and category_id rows are. What I want to do is return a list of all the articles that article_tags and article_categories MAY have in common, ordered by the number of common entries. For example: article1 - tags: tag1, tag2, tag3 - categories: cat1, cat2 article2 - tags: tag2 - categories: cat1, cat2 article3 - tags: tag1, tag3 - categories: cat1 So if my article had "tag1" and "cat1 and cat2" it should return the articles in this order: article1 (tag1, cat1 and cat2 in common) article3 (tag1, cat1 in common) article2 (cat1 in common) Any help would genuinely be appreciated!   We're using Visual Studio Database Edition (DBPro) to manage our schema. This is a great tool that, among the many things it can do, can analyse our schema and T-SQL code based on rules (much like what FxCop does with C# code), and flag certain things as warnings and errors. Some example rules might be that every table must have a primary key, no underscore's in column names, every stored procedure must have comments etc. The number of rules built into DBPro is fairly small, and a bit odd. Fortunately DBPro has an API that allows the developer to create their own. I'm curious as to the types of rules you and your DB team would create (both schema rules and T-SQL rules).   1.) I have a main method Processing, which takes string as an arguments and that string contains some x number of tasks. 2.) I have another method Status, which keeps track of first method by using two variables TotalTests and CurrentTest. which will be modified every time with in a loop in first method(Processing). 3.) When more than one client makes a call parallely to my web service to call the Processing method by passing a string, which has different tasks will take more time to process. so in the mean while clients will be using a second thread to call the Status method in the webservice to get the status of the first method. 4.) when point number 3 is being done all the clients are supposed to get the variables(TotalTests,CurrentTest) parallely with out being mixed up with other client requests. 5.) The code that i have provided below is getting mixed up variables results for all the clients when i make them as static. If i remove static for the variables then clients are just getting all 0's for these 2 variables and i am unable to fix it. Please take a look at the below code. Please ignore this one !! Thanks. In my app in C# I have several input fields that I need to capture. I need them to be of specific sizes and type and I have used masked Text Boxes for these. I have fields like name which is 20 text charachters long, and a certificate number which is 5 numeric characters with a preceding C etc. This works fine except with I click on a field with the mouse, the cursor does not go to the begining of the fild, or the end of any input text. Is there a way of allowing this to happen using Masked Text Box or will I have to use normal Text Box and do all the field validation manually ?

Second file has format: [23] [config] 'name'='abc' 'see?'= [23] Now the requirement is that I need to compare both files and generate file as: #comments config = { #comments 'name': 'abc', 'see?': 'world':'ABC',CLASS=3 } So the result file will contain the values from the first file, unless the value for same attribute is there in second file, which will overwrite the value.   According to the documentation, if a UIPickerView has no selected value, the expected return from selectedRowInComponent: should be: "A zero-indexed number identifying the selected row, or -1 if no row is selected." However, if I check the value the very line after initializing one, its value is 0. Even if I then manually set it to -1, it still returns 0. I would like to be able to detect whether the user has chosen a value yet or not, without recording it in a local variable. Does it matter if "less than" or "less than or equal to" is used? If you have insight for a different language, please indicate which. For readability I'm assuming 0-based arrays. UPD: My mention of 0-based arrays may have confused things. I'm not talking about iterating through array elements. Just a general loop. There is a good point below about using a constant to which would explain what this magic number is. So if I had "int NUMBER_OF_THINGS = 7" then "i <= NUMBER_OF_THINGS - 1" would look weird, wouldn't it.

• Pylons importing Psycopg2 error

Any ideas on this issue much appreciated. EDIT: so after dealing with so many psycopg2 errors everytime I set up my mac, I've decided to use VMWareFusion running Ubuntu instead.

  Hi All, I have the this bit of code in a VBA class which is to workout the number of days between a property of the class (a date) and today’s date. Dim EmailDate As Date EmailDate = Me.Email.DateReceived Debug.Print EmailDate, Date Debug.Print NetworkDays(EmailDate), Date, Range("BankHolidays")) When I run it I get the following output 23/04/2010 19/05/2010 [GetMacroRegId] 'NETWORKDAYS' < [GetMacroRegId] 'NETWORKDAYS' -> '699990072' > Error 2015 I have tested it in a module, using dummy data, and get the correct answer. Can anyone see why this would be giving an error in a class? I have referenced atpvbaen.xls. Edit: I have found that when I run the code through a menu option I have created on the menu bar it fails, but when I run it via a button or through the VB Editor it works fine. Looks like it is something to do with the menu. Thanks, Martin

  Hi, i have a question regarding some complex data-binding. I want to be able to update a grid (which has the property "IsItemsHost" set to true) dynamically whenever a data-binding occurs. To be more specific, i bind the grid to some items and i want to change the number of grid rows depending on these items, add something like a header (one row containing some text), and set the items' Grid.Row and Grid.Column using some custom logic. What is the easiest way to apply such behaviour whenever the bound data is updated? Do i have to use a viewmodel that also contains the header data? Thanks in advance.
