• Regex to *not* match any characters

  I know it is quite some weird goal here but for a quick and dirty fix for one of our system we do need to not filter any input and let the corruption go into the system. My current regex for this is "\^.*" The problem with that is that it does not match characters as planned ... but for one match it does work. The string that make it not work is ^@jj (basically anything that has ^ ... ). What would be the best way to not match any characters now ? I was thinking of removing the \  but only doing this will transform the "not" into a "start with" ...

• Good resources for versioning...

  I have a number of Windows servers at work that are used for staging web sites for clients while they are being created. I wanted to start using versioning on them so that when we work with outside vendors on a project, if/when they overwrite my work, I'd like to be able to go back and get the version before. My question is that I think I'm not looking for the correct terms in searching for information, but what kind of resources are there to learn how to install the software for versioning or a site to help me get started. • How can you get the first digit in an int (C#)?

  In C#, what's the best way to get the 1st digit in an int? The method I came up with is to turn the int into a string, find the 1st char of the string, then turn it back to an int. int start = Convert.ToInt32(curr.ToString().Substring(0, 1)); While this does the job, it feels like there is probably a good, simple, math-based solution to such a problem. String manipulation feels clunky. Edit: irrespective of speed differences, mystring[0] instead of Substring() is still just string manipulation

  Is there any way to create live streaming Server using WCF? I need it to have simple structure: it should listen to some url format like http://example.com/service/stream?write&id=ANY_STRING and if any data comes to such address format it'll start making it avaliable by something like this http://example.com/service/stream?read&id=ANY_STRING Main thing here to be able to stream live data thru WCF service not buffering it just sharing stream. I need code examples or OpenSource projects. So can please any one help me with such idea? I think not only I have seen such problem with WCF alot on different sites so answer will help the WCF comunyty alot. I hope.

• Non-trivial desktop apps that use Ruby?

  I'm about to start a project developing a Ruby desktop application. I expect to to be fairly big and I want to learn techniques for dividing code among modules and other techniques for managing complexity. Most large apps I've looked at are Rails apps, but these aren't very helpful, because most of the work is done by Rails itself. What source code would you recommend I take a look at? I'm not interested in libraries or Rails apps, because I get how they do things. CLI apps are OK, but I'm mostly interested in GUI apps (I'm using Gtk+, but I can learn just as much from apps using other GUI toolkits).

• VirtualBox: How to connect to Internet via wi-fi on Mac?

  I installed VirtualBox with a Win XP VM on my Mac running OS 10.7.5. My Mac only has a wi-fi connection to the internet. On the settings for the virtual host, I set: Attached to: Bridged Adapter Name: en1: Wi-Fi (AirPort) Adapter Type: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM) Promiscuous Mode: Deny Mac Address: Cable Connected: true Those are the settings I see around the internet as being correct, but I still can't ping anything. On my Mac I have internet sharing via Ethernet enabled (not sure if that matters). When I start up my WinXP VM, it asks me to install a bunch of hardware which I don't have any drivers to. Do I need to install any ethernet card drivers in order for the internet to work? Thank you!!

• jquery - sliding image group left and right (hiding the ones that are past a certain point)

  So I'm not really sure how to go about doing this at all. I've got an anchor on the left with id="left" and one on the right with id="right". On the hover event, the image thumbnails should start sliding left or right. If there's not enough thumbnails, there should be no sliding. It can only fit 4 images in between the left and right anchors. How can I hide all anchors that are not in between the left and right anchors? I want the images to actually slowly move left or right, not just be sudden. Any ideas? I know how to bind the events and such just fine. I just don't really now how to get started with the image placement.

• Delphi: Application error logging in the field

  Using Delphi 7, I wonder if there is a free component which will collect diagnostic information as my application runs at a remote site and will help me to debug error reports. Maybe it records each menu item selected, control clicked, text input, etc? Maybe it just dumps the stack on a crash. Maybe it does something else ... I don't mind adding code (e.g at the start and end of each procedure), as that might generate more useful info than a fully automatic system. I am not sure if the solution ought to "phone home" or if it is enough to produce a text file which can be emailed to me. Any suggestions?

• Design pattern for data entry forms with LINQ2SQL

  I am about to start a new winforms data entry application, it already has the database designed which I am comfortable with. I was going to use LINQ2SQL to access the tables to keep things type safe but am now wondering about design patterns, something I am just getting into. Since LINQ is giving me objects to use should I still create classes in between to hold the validation code and helper methods or should these just go in with the UI? It just seems I will end up with classes sat in between with little code which will cause the UI classes to have code just getting and setting values in the intermediate class and returning from validation to flag errors... Any good reading on this? Should I consider the entity framework (or similar) instead?

• Exel Question: I need a date and time formula to convert between time zones

  Hello, I am trying to find a way to calculate a duration in days between my, time zone (Central), and (Pacific; Mountain; Eastern). Just do not know where to start. My criteria would be as follows: Cell C5:C100 would be the timestamps in this format:3/18/2010 23:45 but for different dates and times. Cell D5:D100 would be the corresponding timezone in text form: Pacific; Mountain; Eastern; Central. Cell F5 would be where the duration in days would need to be.   I am using pygame and livewires (though I don't think that part is relevant here) to create a game. I've got the game working, but I'm trying to make something akin to a title screen before the game starts. However, it doesn't recognize when I try to make a new line appear. Here is what I have: begin_message=games.Message(value=""" Destroy the Bricks!\n In this game, you control a paddle,\n controlled by your mouse,\n and attempt to destroy all the rows of bricks.\n Careful though, you only have 1 life.\n Don't mess up! Is there a way to make this message actually appear, or can I not use the 'Message' for this?

• How should I build a gaming community

  I've been wanting to build my own gaming community site (like http://fragbite.com) for a long time, I have started many times but just quitted after a couple days because it gets very messy I've been palying around with php and mysql off and on for 3 years but i've never gotten in to oop. i have tried but i usually end up with the "old php". I usually build my pages like so that i include a file on top of all pages with neccasary functions, html head etc. And I mix php and html together which I dont mind but if I eventually would get a designer he would not like it i think. I have tried both phpcake and codeigniter and all those popular mvc's but its just to much, like they do all the work. i want to do it myself. but i dont know where to start. What would you do if you were me? Is there maybe some non-oop mvc? (Sorry for my english)

  I am using Zend_Db to insert some data inside a transaction. My function starts a transaction and then calls another method that also attempts to start a transaction and of course fails(I am using MySQL5). So, the question is - how do I detect that transaction has already been started? • jQuery mobile swipe spamming and animation

  I have say 5 list items with images inside placed 200px from eachother. I am trying to animate these list items to slide horizontally left if one presses a link with the id = #next or if one swipes left. And vice versa for sliding the list items right. Every click or swipe results in a slide animation of 200px on every list item. I ran into a problem where spamming the #next or #prev button would cancel the current animation and start a new one. This results in list items not sliding 200px+200px+200... but something like this 200px+140px+120... This because like I said the animation is cut and therefore the sliding distance will be shorter. Now I solved this for the clicking event by disabling the button before the animation starts and then re'enabling it on the end callbak function. But this problem is remaining for the swipe event. How can I solve this problem for the swipe event?

• How can I close my software in a save way?

  Up to now I used my application as a stand alone product. So, when user pressed "Stop" button I called System.exit(0); and it was fine. Now my application will be called (in a programmatic way) from another program. So, I afraid that System.exit(0); will kill not only my process but also the external software which started my program. So, what is the correct way to shutdown my application if a corresponding request from an external software is received? My application is an GUI application. So, I want to close the window but I also want to close all processes performed by my program. ADDED: To be more specific, I want to close all threads started by my program. My program does not start any OS process or any other program.

• Address of array vs. address of array[0] - C language

  My question is why does the address of an array differ from the address of its first position? I'm trying to write my own malloc, but to start out I'm just allocating a chunk of memory and playing around with the addresses. I am doing this by putting this script in /etc/init.d (and following other K and S rules) 2) The program which will be called by the script is located at $HOME/xxx/yyy location. 4) I am using 'su - {myuser} -c "{full path of the program}"' in order to execute the script as {myuser} 3) I dont want to hardcode the value of $HOME in the script but want to use the $HOME env variable only. How can I get this $HOME env variable in the shell script? Also what other variables will be available to me?

  Hi How can I extract the longest of groups which start the same way For example, from a given string, I want to extract the longest match to either CS or CSI. I tried this "(CS|CSI).*" and it it will return CS rather than CSI even if CSI is available. If I do "(CSI|CS).*" then I do get CSI if it's a match, so I gues the solution is to always place the shorter of the overlaping groups after the longer one. Is there a clearer way to express this with re's? somehow it feels confusing that the result depends on the order you link the groups.

• Python Tkinter after loop not working fast enough

  I am making a simple metronome where it plays a tick sound every few milliseconds depending on the bpm and plays the sound using the winsound module. I use tkinter because there will be a gui component later but for now the metronome code is working, it plays the sound at a constant rate, but even though I set the after loop to play the sound every few milliseconds, it waits longer and the beat is slower than it should be. Is it a problem with the code or a problem with the way I calculate the time? Thanks.
