  • Problem with Ruby script output being stored into a file

    I have a Ruby script that outputs a heap of text. As an example: puts "line 1" puts "line 2" puts "line 3" # etc... (obviously, this isn't how my script works..) There's not a lot of data - perhaps about 8kb of character data in total. When I run the script on the command line, it works as expected: $ ./my-script.rb line 1 line 2 line 3 But, when I push it into a file, the output is truncated at exactly 4096 bytes: $ ./my-script.rb > output.txt What would cause it to stop at 4kb?

    I am a Powershell novice and have run into a challenge in reading, sorting, and outputting a csv file. The input csv has no headers, the data is as follows: 05/25/2010,18:48:33,Stop,a1usak,10.128.212.212 05/25/2010,18:48:36,Start,q2uhal,10.136.198.231 05/25/2010,18:48:09,Stop,s0upxb,10.136.198.231 I use the following piping construct to read the file, sort and output to a file: (Get-Content d:\vpnData\u62gvpn2.csv) | %{,[regex]::Split($, ",")} | sort @{Expression={$[3]}},@{Expression={$_[1]}} | out-file d:\vpnData\u62gvpn3.csv The new file is written with the following format: 05/25/2010 07:41:57 Stop a0uaar 10.128.196.160 05/25/2010 12:24:24 Start a0uaar 10.136.199.51 05/25/2010 20:00:56 Stop a0uaar 10.136.199.51 What I would like to see in the output file is a similar format to the original input file with comma dilimiters: 05/25/2010,07:41:57,Stop,a0uaar,10.128.196.160 05/25/2010,12:24:24,Start,a0uaar,10.136.199.51 05/25/2010,20:00:56,Stop,a0uaar,10.136.199.51 But I can't quite seem to get there. I'm almost of the mind that I'll have to write another segment to read the newly produced file and reset its contents to the preferred format for further processing. Thoughts?

    I am trying to figure out the output for a block of C code using fork() and I am having some problems understanding why it comes out the way it does. I understand that when using fork() it starts another instance of the program in parallel and that the child instance will return 0. Could someone explain step by step the output to the block of code below?   • C# - Realtime console output redirection

    I'm developing a C# application and I need to start an external console program to perform some tasks (extract files). What I need to do is to redirect the output of the console program. Code like this one does not work, because it raises events only when a new line is writen in the console program, but the one I use "updates" what's shown in the console window, without writting any new lines. How can I raise an event every time the text in the console is updated? Or just get the output of the console program every X seconds? Thanks in advance!

    Perl and PHP do this with backticks. For example: $output = `ls`; This code returns a directory listing into the variable $output. A similar function, system("ls"), returns the operating system return code for the given command. I'm talking about a variant that returns whatever the command prints to stdout. (There are better ways to get the list of files in a directory; the example code is an example of this concept.) How do other languages do this? Is there a canonical name for this function? (I'm going with "backtick"; though maybe I could coin "syslurp".)

  • Hardware question re Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 900 HD video/tv capture unit used with laptop with HDMI output laptop HDMI connection

    I've ordered a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 900 HD video/tv capture unit. It is mainly for use with my HP desktop running Windows 7 Professional, but I will want to use it occasionally with my partner's HP laptop running Vista Home Premium. The latter has an HDMI output which works perfectly with my LG 42" LCD TV, enabling display of BBC iPlayer and other catchup services. Will the live or recorded HD signal from the WinTV-HVR 900 HD connected to the laptop's USB input be output on the laptop's HDMI socket as HD? Come to that, will SD content be output? The reason I ask is that I had a problem with a Pinnacle unit which displayed OK on the laptop's screen but not on the TV screen (which did display all the normal Windows material). I've tried the Hauppage website, but it doesn't even acknowledge the existence of the WinTV-HVR 900 HD!

  • Print screen key can no longer select a region to capture

    After upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10, I've noticed that the "Take Screenshot" application used to be launched when I'd hit print screen. Now it automatically captures the entire screen. In 11.04 it would pop up the "take screenshot" application which allows me to capture a rectangular region of the screen. Can this be reverted? I never want to capture the whole screen, only portions of it, which means manually cropping out that section in GIMP with this changed behaviour. Cheers.

  • Change Data Capture or Change Tracking - Same as Traditional Audit Trail Table?

    Before I delve into the abyss of Microsoft documentation any deeper, I'd like to know if someone experienced with Change Data Capture and Change Tracking know if one or both of these can be used to replace the traditional ... "Audit trail table copy of the 'real table' (all of the fields of the original table, plus date/time, user ID, and DML action field) inserted into by Triggers" ... setup for a database table audit trail, where the trigger populates the audit trail table (which is all manual work). The MSDN overview documentation explains at a high level what Change Data Capture and Change Tracking are, but it isn't clear enough to me, and doesn't state outright, that these tools can be used to replace the traditional audit trail tables we've made so often. Can someone with any experience using Change Data Capture and Change Tracking save me a lot of time, or confirm that I am spending time looking at the right tool? The critical part of our audit trail is capturing all changes to a table's fields (on INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE), when it happened, and who did it. These changes are commonly provided to an end user chronologically via an audit trail report. Which is another question ... Change Data Capture or Change Tracking is the solution, I'd assume that this data can be queried just like data from a normal table? EDIT: I need a permanent audit trail, irregardless of time. I see that Change Data Capture has to do with the transaction logs, so this sounds finite to me.

    When I run my Win32 project in the Visual Studio debugger, I get this huge screed of output about which DLLs were loaded, first-chance exceptions, and so on. Is there a way that I can suppress this output? Some day, I might want to know when 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ntdll.dll' was loaded, but normally I don't care. This is especially true when I'm running unit tests, and just want to be told whether any of the tests failed. This stuff isn't output with console applications, but it is with windows applications. To give an example of what I mean, here are the first lines from the output of a recent unit-test run. 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\dev\MyProject\Testing\MyProject.exe', Symbols loaded.     This deletes the document from the Document table and outputs information about the deleted document into the FinishedDocument table. DELETE FROM Document OUTPUT Deleted.DocumentId , Deleted.DocumentDescription INTO FinishedDocument WHERE DocumentId = @DocumentId I need to delete the document not just from the Document table, but also from the DocumentBackup table. Meanwhile, I need to maintain insertion into FinishedDocument. Is all of this possible with only one statement? If not, is a second DELETE (against DocumentBackup), with all of it wrapped in a transaction, the way to go?

    I have a small script, which is called daily by crontab using the following command: /homedir/MyScript &> some_log.log The problem with this method is that some_log.log is only created after MyScript finishes. I would like to flush the output of the program into the file while it's running so I could do things like tail -f some_log.log and keep track of the progress, etc.
