  • can't see myself in Skype video call

    I'm running 12.04 and I've installed skype via the software centre. As with 11.10 everything works fine with 12.04 as well. There is only one thing that does not work. I can't see myself in Skype video calls. The video call works fine, I can see the other side the other side can see me. Buid in microphone works. If I click on 'show myself' during the video call nothing happens. I know that it works on Ubuntu in general as I had it working a while back on a different machine (Xubuntu 11.04). Could that be related to the GPU? I'm now on a intel/nvidia one. Any Ideas where I can hunt for some options or tweaking?

    I think a community wiki on problems (and solutions) when installing Ubuntu (10.10) on a Thinkpad Edge 11 would be nice (because I just got one ;)). I'll contribute with my own problems and solutions, and hope others will join too. Thinkwiki entry for the Edge 11 Known problems: No wifi-driver, solution: answer #1, answer #2 Fan is loud, even though it's on auto. No solution. Thinkfan is a possible solution, but correction values for sensors should be supplied (mapping sensors to specific areas). Also, one sensor is between -100C and +100C - maybe some kind of deactivation would help. FN keys stop working: see below. No sound on headphones: see below.

  • iwlwifi on lenovo z570 disabled by hardware switch

    It was working fine with windows 7. The hardware switch is not disabled. I've toggled it back and forth dozens of times. The wifi light never turns on and it always lists as hardware disabled. I have the latest updates installed. I've been searching for solutions, but none of them seem to work for me. I've tried removing acer-wmi. I've tried setting 11n_disable=1. I've tried resetting the bios. I've tried using rfkill to unblock (only removes soft block). I've rebooted dozens of times. The wifi light turns off as soon as grub loads. Edit: I have a usb edimax wireless nic. It shows hardware disabled as well (although rfkill lists as unblocked).   • purple screen when booting on lenovo G505s

    I successfully installed Ubuntu 14.04. I'm having the purple screen issue however even after making the nomodeset changes. It remains stuck on a purple screen. I can navigate through the menu options i.e Ubuntu, Advanced Options for Ubuntu, Memory Test, Windows Recovery Environment and Windows 8. I can't even boot into Windows 8. I'm totally new to this. If someone could please provide step by step instructions, that would be most appreciated.

    When I had been using Windows 8 my touchpad had multiple gestures: 2 fingers direction top-bottom = vertical revers scrolling(if I scrolled top than page have scrolled bottom); 2 finger direction left-right = horizontal revers scrolling zoom in and zoom out like smartphones with 2 fingers 2 finger rotation = rotate image in image viewer (+ 90 deg or -90 deg) place a finger in the left edge and drag it to right = change windows application, in Ubuntu I want to change the active program to left like Ctrl+Shift+Tab place a finger in the right edge and drag it to left = open right menu and select the option moving finger on direction top-bottom, in Ubuntu I want to change the active program to right like Alt+Tab I succeed enable 2 finger vertical scrolling of System Setings, but I want that it do not work in revers sense. Do it exist a method to enable the rest of gestures and revers the vertical scrolling? edit: It's a Synaptics touchpad.

  • Cannot boot after installing ubuntu on lenovo x120e

    I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my x120e using amd64 alternate iso image. The installation went fine, but it is having issues while booting after a successful installation, it says - "No Operating System Found". I followed the instruction at - help.ubuntu.com/community/X120e#Installation to purge grub-efi and installed grub-pc, even then I couldn't boot into ubuntu.(got the same "No Operating System Found") This is the file from boot-repair with this setup - http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/926556/ Then I asked in #ubuntu and they suggested me to create a bios-boot partition, I was not very comfortable with the solution they had suggested but gave it a try anyhow. I re-sized my initial partition and made 4 MB free space in the beginning of the partition and had set the flag bios_grub. Re-installed ubuntu 11.10 this time using amd64 desktop iso image file. Installation went fine as before but finally this time also the system didn't boot, it gave the same - "No Operating System Found" message. In BIOS I have the settings as to use both (Legacy and UEFI) and with UEFI tried first.   • Format (remove) HDD volume that is visible in Windows 7 Disk Management but not diskpart.exe

    I'm trying to get iRST working on a SSD I installed in my lenovo u410. As part of that process, I created a hibernation partition and was fiddling around with RAID/AHCI settings. I managed to make my computer unbootable. No sweat, I just restored it with Lenovo's 1 key system. Now, however, I can't do anything with that hybernation partition! I can see it: (It's the 7.81 GB partition). But when I try to delete it in Diskpart.exe to reclaim the space and try the formatting again I only see this: I can't do anything with the partition in Disk Management either. Right clicking only shows the 'help' option. Can anyone suggest a way to edit these partitions with windows or, at least, reccomend a program that might help me fix this? Note, I'd rather not delete the 16 GB OEM partition that I believe holds the backup for this computer.

    I have set of two Lenovo laptops on which Fedora core 13 is installed. On one machine, the monitor is detected properly such that it is possible to connect another monitor. But on another laptop, the monitor is shown as unknown monitor. I tried to fix it by reinstalling xorg-x11-drv-intel.i686. But the problem remains same (unknown monitor) and it is not possible to connect another monitor with this setting. Laptop model: Lenovo G460. Graphics card: Intel Graphics Media accelerator HD.   • Intel Rapid Start Driver Reinstallation doesn't work?

    I recently had to reformat my entire drive and reinstall Windows 7. Something that bothers me is that when I was downloading the Intel Rapid Start driver (I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y480, and it comes standard with the Rapid Start) and tried to install it, the installer claimed that my system did not meet the requirements in order to install, when it was previously installed by the OEM. My startup times have increased from 21 seconds to log-in screen to 50 seconds. Please help...   • X200 Tablet notebook won't start after BIOS Update

    I have LENOVO X200 Tablet and I ran the BIOS Update and the computer won't start after the BIOS update. When I ran the BIOS update utility it ran everything fine and asked to restart the computer but it wont start screen is blank. I unplugged the power and took of the battery and put them back and still not starting. Now it has [Power On] indicator light on and screen is not starting. I tried pressing F1 button while trying to start the computer but it doesn't do react to anything. Please help how I can start my Tablet.   • laptop motherboard "shorts" when connected to adapter

    Disclaimer: I'm sort of a noob, and this is a long post. Thank you all in advance! summary: completely dead laptop with no signs of life whatsoever (suddenly, for no apparent reason) Here's the deal: Lenovo Y470 (only a few months old with no water or shock damage). It stopped working suddenly (no lights, no sound, even when connecting adapter with or without battery). I tried a different adapter (same electrical rating), but no luck. I disassembled the thing completely, and tried plugging in the adapter and looking for signs of life with all different combinations of components installed (tried all combinations of RAM, CPU, USB power cords, screen, etc plugged in). no luck. Then, I noticed (as I was plugging in the adapter to try for the millionth time) that there was a "spark" for an instant when I first connect the adapter to the power jack. The adapter's LED would then flash (indicating it isn't working or charging). So, I thought the power jack has a short of some sort (due to bad soldering or something). Scanned virtually every single component on the motherboard, and tested the power jack connections with a multimeter. No shorts or damage to anything on the entire motherboard. Now I'm thinking I need to replace the motherboard. But, my actual question: What does this "shorting" when connecting the adapter signify? (btw, the voltage across the power connections and current through it drop to virtually zero when the adapter is connected and "sparks", and they stay that way). The bewildering thing is that there are no damaged components, and the voltage across adapter terminals returns to normal after I disconnect it (so it's not damaged). Please take a look at the pictures (of the motherboard's power connection and nearby components) and see if I'm missing something completely obvious...   • Intell SSD + Win 7 after crash can not repair, can not re install

    I have Lenovo w520, after i bought it i took away old hhd (no longer with me) and replaced it with intel ssd, it worked perfectly for 1 year or so, today my system fr0ze and after waiting for some time i didi hard reset - it wasn't able to boot anymore at all, i do not see any messages from windows ever, it only loads Intel boot utility that suggests to pick one of 3 devices to boot, it has my hdd there but nothing happens. /I dont have recovery tools from lenovo since i moved to another country, i got win 7 cd from a friend (came with his laptop) abd if in bios i have AHCI - it doesnt see my ssd, if compatible mode - it sees it but format not available, partition creation gives b\me 8007045 error. I tried diskpart, in compatible mode it sees my disk but doesnt do recover or clean all, also win 7 disk tools dont do anything if i try to do boot fix... I am ok with erasing it but i seem not to be able too, i jus tneed the machine to wpork asap, all my files are on external drives so i dont care about formatting. please help! I am given a very old machine by a friend so i am able to browse internet... it is under XP...

  • USB Hub vs. Dockinstation USB vs. Laptop USB

    I recently had thougts about my current setup in my office, especially about the UBS ports distribution. Here's my setup: I have a Lenovo T410 docked to a Lenovo Dockingstation Series 3, that providey me with 6 USB ports, which I use all (3 ext. drives, mouse, keyboard, USB Hub of monitor). The USB hub on my ext. monitor (most probably powered by the ext. monitor's power supply) provides me with 2 USB ports, where I use one for my webcam and another for USB sticks. On my T410 itself I have 4 USB slots, that are usually not used, as don't want to mess with USB plugs when undocking my laptop, now and then I plug my printer on one of these, just because I don't have any UBS ports left. Now I'm wondering how fast each of these slots are: I assume that all the 6 USB ports from the dockinstation somehow go through the docking connector on the bottom of my laptop. Does this connector has such a big bandwidth for all these 6 USB ports to perform like if they were dedicated ports as the 4 ones on my laptop? Also how is generally the performance of USB hubs (like the one on my ext. monitor?)?

    I ran into an quite odd problem, after installing some drivers on my Lenovo N100 0768 (Windows 7) notebook and attaching an USB-HDD. Now I have sound, but constantly the device dicsonnected sound - like every 2 seconds! Looked at the device manager and it is flashing together with the sound. A quick search on the net directed me towords driver issues or issues with attached usb-devices. No big suprise here - but how can I solve this?!

    I am running a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 processor. When I run Virtual PC in Windows 7, I get the following error: Unable to start Windows Virtual PC because hardware-assisted virtualization is disabled. When running the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool from Microsoft says: Hardware-assited virtualization is not enabled on this computer. Now, in the BIOS, I do have virtualization enabled and according to Intel this processor supports Intel-VT. What am I missing here?

  • My Laptop Screen keeps flickering...

    I have a lenovo g530 and the screen keeps flickering on occasion. Sometimes it is worse than others, and sometimes it doesn't seem to do it at all. I was able to capture a video of it so you could see what is happening. I kinda wanted someone else's opinion before I open it up and check the monitor cable on the board.
