• Booting from e-sata drive

  I have a HP EliteBook laptop (don't know exact product number), which has an internal hard drive with Windows installed on it. I have an external hard drive with e-sata and USB ports, linux installed on it. When I try to boot from the external drive, it works if I use USB but not if I use e-sata. In the BIOS setup, I have the following boot order set: External SATA drive USB Hard Drive Notebook Upgrade Bay Notebook Hard Drive etc. When I boot from another drive (such as the internal hard drive or from CD-ROM), and have the e-sata cable connected, it works perfectly. Is there any way to boot from the e-sata drive?

  Dear Readers, I am working on implementing a custom Document Management System using the Oracle XML DB Content Connector. See the following documentation link for details Oracle XML DB Developer's Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2)Chapter 31 Using Oracle XML DB Content Connectorhttp://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e23094/xdb_jcr.htm especially the following example gave me some trouble to run it successfully Sample Code to Upload Filehttp://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e23094/xdb_jcr.htm#ADXDB5627 I had already succeeded to set some of the properties successfully, i.e. jcr:encoding, jcr:mimeType, ojcr:displayName and ojcr:language. However setting the jcr:data property as described in the example failed consistently, both with the documented input FileStream or with a fixed string. contentNode.setProperty("jcr:data", "mystringvalue"); After some research I found the following Support Note which describes the cause for the issue in the JDBC driver version 11.2.0.1. • Experience with AMCC 3ware 9650se raid cards? Ours seems dead

  We have a 8-port 3ware 9650se raid card for our main disk array. We had to bring the server down for a pending power outage, and when we turned the machine back on, the raid card never started. This card has been in service for a couple years without problems, and was working up until the shutdown. Now, when we turn the machine on, the bios option rom that normally kicks in before the bootloader doesn't show up, none of the drives start, and when the OS tries to access the device, it just times out. The firmware on it has been upgraded in the past, so it's possible we've hit some sort of firmware bug. We're using it in a Silicon Mechanics R272 machine with gentoo for the OS. The OS eventually boots, but alas, without the card. We've ordered a new one, but I'm worried that if we replace the card it won't recognize the existing array. Has anybody performed a card swap before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi, i have one very slow notebook from year about 2000. On the computer is running icewm with firefox (in this times chromium for testing). My question is if it's good step to upgrade the system to Karmic Koala? I can't install another OS on that. It doesn't have CD-ROM, it can't boot from flash, or network. The new wanted state is little bit faster system for browsing web and copying photos to local NAS. I don't mention hardware configuration, becouse it's real speed is really deep below the paper parameters.

• Network really slow with TL-WN951N wireless card

  I literally just installed ubuntu and it seems to be working great except the network is deadly slow. I'm running a TL-WN951N wireless card which can download at about 600-700 KB/s in windows but in Ubuntu the max speed it seems to get is around 5KB/s. I guess I should note that my WAP is only wireless-G but like I said, I can get much better speeds in Windows. I'm testing the speeds by downloading files from here: http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/test/ Anyone have any idea? I saw some people recommend downloading drivers and compiling them myself but I'm really really new to all of this so would appreciate someone babying me through it so I don't brick my computer! • Are there any data remanence issues with flash storage devices?

  I am under the impression that, unlike magnetic storage, once data has been deleted from a flash drive it is gone for good but I'm looking to confirm this. This is actually relating to my smart phone, not my computer, but I figured it would be the same for any flash type memory. Basically, I have done a "Factory Reset" on the phone, which wipes the Flash ROM clean but I'm wondering is it really clean or is the next person that has my phone, if they are savvy enough going to be able to get all my passwords and what not? And yes, I am wearing my tinfoil hat so the CIA satellites can't read my thoughts, so I'm covered there.

• Try out ubuntu on thinkpad x40 (via usb)?

  I am trying to try out ubuntu (i,e, install it within windows) on my thinkpad x40. I followed the instructions on how to create a bootable usb (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download). No problem. The issue I have now is that th eusb ports on my x40 were burned before (common problem with the machine), i.e. do not work. So I got a USB notebook card from belkin. However it does not seem to recognize the usb stick from bios, thus I cannot boot from it. I also do not have a cd rom. Then tried to run wubi from the usb stick, briefly appears in task manager, no further action. So I tried it with wubi.exe, but same thing. Downloaded it to desktop, run it, briefly appears in the task manager under processes, no further action. Any one idea? I have enough memory and enough freed hd space. Thanks. Oliver

• Black screen appears when booting new install of 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

• Unable to play bluray movies or see bluray discs

  I have a Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S ATA Device and when I put bluray discs into the drive the computer doesn't read them. I hear the drive make 3 noises as if it's trying to read them. Nothing shows up in windows explorer. I am running windows 7 64bit. I can read DVDs and CDs just fine. Bluray seems to be the only problem. I have installed PowerDVD9, HP DVD Play and HP DVD Media Smart and nothing helps. My laptop is a hp dv7 1273cl. I bought it before the free upgrades to windows 7 were available so I wasn't able to get the upgrade and so HP won't assist me beyond telling me to format and reinstall Vista.

• "custom" routers for VPN - useful or waste of money?

  I use VPN in China and my current service contract expires soon so I was checking what sort of plans are out there now. I found that Witopia offers a "Cloak Box", what appears to be a Linksys wireless router with allegedly hacked/custom firmware to support VPN. Aside from allowing multiple computers to share one VPN connection, is there anything else at work here to justify that price when most new routers are $100 or less these days? Or is this something targeted towards the cd-rom cupholder crowd? And yes, I've contacted them, but haven't heard back yet... EDIT I've heard back from the company - here are the details if anyone else is interested: the router is a Linksys WRT54GL running TomatoVPN custom firmware the hardware waranty is one (1) year, from Linksys/Cisco the VPN is hard-set, so any device connected to the router MUST use the VPN (Witopia blocks torrents) I've decided it's not for me, but hopefully this information will prove useful to others.

  I have an: Ubuntu 12.04 with proprietary Boardcom STA Wireless driver installed BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n wireless card TP-LINK TD-W8101G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router Yesterday before I went to sleep, I still connect to my wireless access point, this morning when I start my laptop I don't see it in the list - there are some neighbors listed but not mine. The WLAN is green, with my old Nokia E72, I still see my access point with 100% signal. I have tried to restart my laptop and turn the firmware off/on by the switch but no help. I have read the WirelessTroubleShootingGuide but I can do anything. • Where to find and install ASUS motherboard drivers for Linux

  This is my second day ever with Linux, and I had one heck of a time getting the nVidia drivers installed and working. Please, keep in mind I am very new and just starting out. I currently have an ASUS P8Z68-V LE motherboard and I'm not sure if the drivers are installed. Where would I go to find that out? I am using Gnome as my UI. If I don't have the drivers installed, where would I go? The ASUS site only gives me options to download for various Windows OS, DOS and "other" (in .ROM format). Which should I take and how should I install? I'm mostly looking for audio drivers. A lot of music I play, either on YouTube or with VLC has a faint crackling in the background on Ubuntu, which gets much worse the higher I turn the volume up. Could this be something other than the drivers? I doubt it's the hardware since the sound seems fine on Windows. I am currently running 12.04.

• Create a Remote Git Repository from an Existing XCode Repository

  Introduction Distributed version control systems (VCS’s), like Git, provide a rich set of features for managing source code.  Many development tools, including XCode, provide built-in support for various VCS’s.  These tools provide simple configuration with limited customization to get you up and running quickly while still providing the safety net of basic version control. I hate losing (and re-doing) work.  I have OCD when it comes to saving and versioning source code.  Save early, save often, and commit to the VCS often.  I also hate merging code.  Smaller and more frequent commits enable me to minimize merge time and effort as well. The work flow I prefer even for personal exploratory projects is: Make small local changes to the codebase to create an incrementally improved (and working) system. Commit these changes to the local repository.  Local repositories are quick to access, function even while offline, and provides the confidence to continue making bold changes to the system.  After all, I can easily recover to a recent working state. Repeat 1 & 2 until the codebase contains “significant” functionality and I have connectivity to the remote repository. Push the accumulated changes to the remote repository.  The smaller the change set, the less likely extensive merging will be required.  Smaller is better, IMHO. The remote repository typically has a greater degree of fault tolerance and active management dedicated to it.  This can be as simple as a network share that is backed up nightly or as complex as dedicated hardware with specialized server-side processing and significant administrative monitoring. XCode’s out-of-the-box Git integration enables steps 1 and 2 above.  Time Machine backups of the local repository add an additional degree of fault tolerance, but do not support collaboration or take advantage of managed infrastructure such as on-premises or cloud-based storage. Creating a Remote Repository These are the steps I use to enable the full workflow identified above.  For simplicity the “remote” repository is created on the local file system.  This location could easily be on a mounted network volume. Create a Test Project My project is called HelloGit and is located at /Users/Don/Dev/HelloGit.  Be sure to commit all outstanding changes.  XCode always leaves a single changed file for me after the project is created and the initial commit is submitted. Clone the Local Repository We want to clone the XCode-created Git repository to the location where the remote repository will reside.  In this case it will be /Users/Don/Dev/RemoteHelloGit. Open the Terminal application. Clone the local repository to the remote repository location: git clone /Users/Don/Dev/HelloGit /Users/Don/Dev/RemoteHelloGit Convert the Remote Repository to a Bare Repository The remote repository only needs to contain the Git database.  It does not need a checked out branch or local files. Go to the remote repository folder: cd /Users/Don/Dev/RemoteHelloGit Indicate the repository is “bare”: git config --bool core.bare true Remove files, leaving the .git folder: rm -R * Remove the “origin” remote: git remote rm origin Configure the Local Repository The local repository should reference the remote repository.  The remote name “origin” is used by convention to indicate the originating repository.  This is set automatically when a repository is cloned.  We will use the “origin” name here to reflect that relationship. Go to the local repository folder: cd /Users/Don/Dev/HelloGit Add the remote: git remote add origin /Users/Don/Dev/RemoteHelloGit Test Connectivity Any changes made to the local Git repository can be pushed to the remote repository subject to the merging rules Git enforces. • Google Chrome not rendering webpages correctly

  I am facing some serious web page rendering issues with Chrome. It is more prominent during javascript based animations and stuff on websites like youtube. I have tried removing chrome using (sudo apt-get purge google-chrome-stable) and then reinstalling it. But the problems still persist. The same webpages work correctly on firefox on ubuntu and chrome on windows. The problem only shows up when I use chrome on ubuntu. I think the issue has started after I updated to the latest version of Chrome. I have used Chrome previously on this machine without any problems. I have attached a image that demonstrates the issue. What could possibly be the problem? • Windows XP Disc: corrupt or not corrupt?

  Hi all, I just finished one of my builds and am trying to install Windows XP onto it. Here are the specs beforehand... Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4 GHz (512KB L2, 533MHz FSB) QDI Superb 4 Motherboard 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Seagate 80GB IDE HDD Bestec 250W PSU 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro Samsung DVD-ROM USB 2.0 PCI Card Generic PCI Modem The issue right now is that when I'm running through the Windows Setup from my XP Pro SP3 disc, partway through the setup says that a random file on the disc is corrupt and the computer needs to be restarted. Every time I tried booting it up, a different file was noted as corrupt. However, I tested the same disc on another computer and the Windows XP disc ran to the end of the setup screen without error. • Computer not acknowledging sound card after move

  We just got our computer back from having moved and when I tried to hook our speaker system, the computer keeps telling me that I don't have a sound system installed. It's a Dell computer with the original surround/subwoofer system that it came with and was working fine before the move. I tried buying a new speaker system (Logitech) to see if it would work, but still saying I have no audio device installed and it's not showing up in my device manager. I opened up the computer and unplugged the sound card, then plugged it back in, still nothing. I put the install disc from the sound card in the cd-rom, but it's saying that I have no sound device hardware in my system.

• Screen problems on 11.10 using VGA compatible controller 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller

  I am having problems with my display. The problem manifests as lots of screen artefacts, which seem to be worse in Unity than in Gnome 3, are worse after i have used suspend and are intolerable if i set myself up on a dual monitor. Specific issues include: icons disappearing, lines occurring all over the screen, the backgrounds of certain windows going another colour and window borders disappearing or being filled with text from other parts of the screen. The most annoying problem is lines of text disappearing from a host of word processing programmes (libreoffice, gedit, bluefish etc), as i type. In most circumstances the screen problem can be temporarily fixed (so that i can see the screen clearly) by either scrolling the text off the screen and then scrolling it back onto the screen, or highlighting the offending area of the desktop, by clicking and dragging. Errors on parts of the screen that don't seem to redraw (window borders (off the universal menu) or the screen area outside of a LO document, in print layout view, for example) can't seem to be fixed in a session. • double screen in ubuntu 12.04?

  I am using ubuntu 12.04 and my video card is ATI Radeon 5000. I cannot use double screen (extended version).
