• Qt4 book says "make release", reality disagrees

  Writing some simple Qt4 demos depending the book by Daniel Molkentin. In that book, it says you build the release or debug versions of your app with "make release" or "make debug". In real life, these give errors. Only bare naked "make" works. I assume something has changed between the version of Qt4 used in the book and the version I'm using, qt4.6.2. So what is the proper way to determine whether to make release or debug? (And why can't google find any updates or errata for this book relating to this?)

• Devision in c# not going the way i expect

  Im trying to write something to get my images to show correctly. I have 2 numbers "breedtePlaatje" and "hoogtePlaatje". When i load those 2 vars with the values i get back "800" and "500" i expect "verH" to be (500 / 800) = 0,625. Tho the value of verH = 0.. • How to prevent a dll from being loaded in other apps

  Hello, currently I develop a C#.Net application in which I'm using a custom control I developed some time ago. I need the dll to be shipped within the new application - but understandably I do not want the dll file to be used for foreign apps. That's why I need the custom dll to be somehow compiled within the new application. Currently the dll is copied into the application directory. Any ideas? Should be trivial imho. • Python: Get items at depth? (set library?)

  I have a nested list something like this: PLACES = ( ('CA', 'Canada', ( ('AB', 'Alberta'), ('BC', 'British Columbia' ( ('van', 'Vancouver'), ), ... )), ('US', 'United States', ( ('AL', 'Alabama'), ('AK', 'Alaska'), ... I need to retrieve some data out of it. If depth is 0 I need to retrieve all the countries (and their codes), if depth == 1, I need to retrieve all the states/provinces, if depth == 2 I need to retrieve all the cities... and so forth. Is there some set library for doing stuff like this? Or can someone point me in the right direction? I started coding up a solution only to realize it wouldn't work for levels deeper than 1 because you have to go in and out of each list...

• Can a Domain Specific Language (DSL) be localized?

  I have never written a DSL, but I am considering it as a feature for a new project (hypothetical). It would be for end users to be able to express in natural language concepts such as weekdays between 10 and 11 except on the first monday of the month. Dutch users might write weekdagen tussen 10 en 11 behalve op de eerste maandag van de maand. In this case the position of the words seems to match, but there may be expressions where the position of verbs/nouns etc. could be different between languages. I realise the obvious answer (it depends). I am a .NET developer and I consider using Boo but I'm open to suggestions. I need to understand wether each translation requires rewriting a part of the implementation (which part) or if there is a way to do actual translations, maybe in some sort of preprocessor. Thanks!

  I am looking for a Java-based numerical method package that provides functionality including: Solving systems of equations using different numerical analysis algorithms. Matrix methods (e.g., inversion). Spline approximations. Probability distributions and statistical methods. In this case, "best" is defined as a package with a mature and usable API, solid performance and numerical accuracy. Edit: derick van brought up a good point in that cost is a factor. I am heavily biased in favor of free packages but others may have a different emphasis.

• extracting a quadrilateral image to a rectangle

  In the image below, the sign on the side of the van is not face-on to the camera. I want to calculate, as best I can with the pixels I have, what it'd look like face on. I imagine that this is some kind of loop through the x and y axis doing a Bresenham's line on both dimensions at once with some kind of mixing when pixels in the source image overlap - some sub-pixel mixing of some sort? What approaches are there, and how do you mix the pixels? Is there a standard approach for this?

  I've looked into some questions here where the "best" programming books are listed and then thought why there isn't a question concerning speeches yet. I think that speeches or presentations from developers or even creators of programming languages which were or are heavily used at some point are particulary interesting. One of my favorite speeches was recommended to me by someone here on SO: The future of C# I also like Guido van Rossum's speeches but he sometimes seems pretty nervous. Another in my opinion good presentation would be the Google tech talk about Go.   Hello all, I'm writing a CLI for a music-media-platform. One of the features is going to be that you can directly play YouTube videos from the CLI. I don't really have an idea to do it but this one sounded the most reasonable: I'm going to use of those sites where you can download music from YouTube, e.g. http://keepvid.com/ - then I directly stream & play this -- but I have one problem.   Hello, I am looking for a book on advanced C programming that: Teaches how to effectively express one's solution in C when one already knows the language in depth. Shows some common design idioms expressed in C, like encapsulation, modularity and that kind of thing. Is example-driven with a lot of good-quality code. I already know the language itself so books like otherwise wonderful "Expert C Programming" by Peter van der Linden is not really what i am looking for. What i need is a book on how to express my design in C, what are the common idioms, best practices, etc. I would also like to note that i am primarily interested in C, not C++, C#, Objective-C or any other languages inspired by C-like syntax. • ANTLR - Embedding Java code, evaluate before or after?

  Hello all, I'm writing a simple scripting language on top of Java/JVM, where you can also embed Java code using the {} brackets. The problem is, how do I parse this in the grammar? I have two options: 1] Allow everything to be in it, such as: [a-z|a-Z|0-9|_|$], and go on 2] Get an extra java grammar and use that grammar to parse that small code (is it actually possible and efficient?) Since option 2] is basically a double-check since when evaluating java code it's also being checked.   What would be the best approach to reverse a large text file that is uploaded asynchronously to a servlet that reverses this file in a scalable and efficient way? text file can be massive (gigabytes long) can assume mulitple server/clustered environment to do this in a distributed manner. open source libraries are encouraged to consider I was thinking of using Java NIO to treat file as an array on disk (so that I don't have to treat the file as a string buffer in memory). • Strange problem when converting RGB to HSV

  Hi, I made a small RGB to HSV converter algorithm with C. It seems to work pretty well, but there is one strange problem: If I first convert i.e. a 800x600 picture into HSV map and then back to RGB map without doing any changes in the values, I get some pixels that are convertet incorrectly. Then if I try to convert those misbehaving single pixels alone to and back, they're converted correctly. Any idea what could be the problem? I'm using Daniel Karlings PNGLite to open that PNG file. An example: Typical (alpha?) sort: 1.1.32.22 11.2.4 2.1.3.4 2.11.23.1.2 2.3.7 3.12.3.5 Correct (numerical) sort: 1.1.32.22 2.1.3.4 2.3.7 2.11.23.1.2 3.12.3.5 11.2.4 I'm having trouble figuring out how to setup the algorithm to do such a sort with n number of decimal delimiters and m number of integer fields. • Make XStream ignore one specific private variable

  Hi guys, I have a little problem with a class I am currently writing a save function for. I'm using XStream (com.thoughtworks.xstream) to serialize a class to XML using the DOMDriver. The class looks like this: public class World { private Configuration config; public World(Configuration config) { this.config = config; } } So, the issue here is that I do not want to serialize Configuration when serializing world, rather I'd like to give XStream a preconstructed Configuration instance when calling fromXml(). Problem here is mainly class design, Configuration holds a private reference to the GUI classes and therefore serializing Configuration means serializing the whole application completely with GUI etc.. And that's kind of bad. Is there a way to instruct XStream to not serialize the private field config, and upon load supply XStream with a configuration instance to use? greetings Daniel

• Best practices about creating a generic object dictionary in C#? Is this bad?

  For clarity I am using C# 3.5/Asp.Net MVC 2 Here is what I have done: I wanted the ability to add/remove functionality to an object at run-time. So I simply added a generic object dictionary to my class like this: public Dictionary<int, object> Components { get; set; } Then I can add/remove any kind of .Net object into this dictionary at run-time. To insert an object I do something like this: var tag = new Tag(); myObject.Components.Add((int)Types.Components.Tag, tag); Then to retrieve I just do this: if(myObject.Components.ContainsKey((int)Types.Components.Tag)) { var tag = myObject.Components[(int)Types.Components.Tag] as Tag; if(tag != null) { //do stuff } } Somehow I feel sneaky doing this. • How can I enforce Eclipse to use Sun Java?

  Hi Before installing Eclipse I had Open JDK on default. Now I changed it to Sun Java. I did as Eclipse Helios was running really slow, unfortunately it is still... Do you have any ideas how to enforce it to use Java Sun? I could reinstal it however I have already Android SDK installed so I would have to do all the process again, after all thats not the correct way of solving problem I think. • Help with porting thread functionality: Win32 --> .Net

  Hi, I am responsible for porting a class from legacy Win32 code to .Net and I have come across a threading model that I'm not sure how best to implement in .Net. Basically the Win32 has one worker thread, which calls WaitForMultipleObjects() and executes the particular piece of code when a particular object has been triggered. This has a sort of first-come-first-serve effect that I need to emulate in my own code. But I'm not sure how best to do this in .Net. Does anyone have any idea? I see that there is no equivalent of WaitForMultipleObjects() in .Net, only the ThreadPool class, which seems to provide most of what I need, but I'm not sure if it's the best, since I only have four objects total to wait and execute code for. • How to partition a plane

  Let's say I have a fixed number (X) of points, e.g. coordinates within a given plane (I think you can call it a 2-D point cloud). These points should be partitioned into Y polygons where Y < X. The polygons should not overlap. It would be wonderful if the polygons were konvex (like a Voronoi diagram). Imagine it like locations forming countries. For example, I have 12 points and want to create 3 polygons with 4 points each. I thought about creating a grid which covers the points. Then iterate across the points, assigning them to the closest grid cells. Maybe I miss the obvious? I am sure there are better solutions. • Django: where do I call settings.configure?

  The Django docs say that I can call settings.configure instead of having a DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE. I would like my website's project to do this. In what file should I put the call to settings.configure so that my settings will get configured at the right time? Edit in response to Daniel Roseman's comment: The reason I want to do this is that settings.configure lets you pass in the settings variables as a kwargs dict, e.g. {'INSTALLED_APPS': ..., 'TEMPLATE_DIRS': ..., ...}. This would allow my app's users to specify their settings in a dict, then pass that dict to a function in my app that augments it with certain settings necessary to make my app work, e.g. adding entries to INSTALLED_APPS. What I envision looks like this. Let's call my app "rexe_app". • JSF - database character encoding

  Hi there, I have a Java Web application using GlassFish 3, JSF2.0 (facelets) and JPA (EclipseLink). The problem I'm facing, is that if I'm saving entities to the database with the update() method, String data loses integrity; '?' is shown instead of some characters. The server, pages and database is/are configured to use UTF-8. After I post form data, the next page shows the data correctly. Furthermore it "seems" in debug that the String property of the current entity stores the correct value too. Dunno if NetBeans debug can be trusted; might be that it decodes correctly, however it's incorrect. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance! Daniel
