  In Is a 40GB SSD practical to use for ' / ' Jorge describes how he symlinks directories in his /home that would benefit from being on an SSD. The directories he names are ~/.cache ~/.config ~/.gconf I know how to make the symlinks. What I am asking for is if this is a good list of directories in /home that benefits from being on an SSD? I figure that good items on such a list are files that are read often. The reason for asking this is that I cannot fit all of /home on the SSD but I still want to get as much performance out of the SSD as possible.

  I am a complete newbie to programming, only took high school Computer science so I kind of know what im doing, I just want to know how I can make a ball rolling game that I want to make, could anyone show me an example of a good "ball rolling game" that has good physics and everything, I have tried to use Box2D for the physics portion of the game, but I found that using that is just code and I can't figure out how to make the graphics and details of the world I want to make in my game, all I would like to do would have a game that has the collision detection and physics of box2d only apply to one ball in it and use the left and right keys to move it. sorry if I am too unclear, if anyone could show a tutorial or something to me on how to make a proper "Ball rolling" game that has good physics that would be appreciated, thank you for taking the time to read this

• Compaq Presario R3000 randomly fails to boot on 11.10, 12.04, 12.10

  I’m trying to figure what to do with random failures to boot. My old HP Presario R3000 with AMD Athlon XP-M sometimes boots, sometimes hangs with a blank screen during boot, and sometimes hangs on shutdown. After a few boot attempts it will finally boot to the GNU GRUB screen where I usually can select Recovery Mode, then select return to a normal boot, and the thing will startup and function normally. The pattern is not repeatable and seemed to start after upgrading from 11.04. Clean installs of 12.04 and 12.10 on newly-formatted hard drives make no difference. If this might be a clue, hangs on shutdown often stop at a line with: “pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: IO port probe 0x3000-0x7fff: excluding 0x3000-0x30ff 0x3400-0x34ff 0x3800-0x38ff 0x3c00-0x3cff”. I did try the “acpi=off” modification from 11.10 randomly fails to boot on Compaq Presario R3000 with no change in these random boot failures. Any suggestions sure appreciated.

• Why doesn't MoveBy work in this example?

  I'd like to run an action on a sprite using the MoveBy action. After lots of attempts, I can't achieve the goal... I have issues with the MoveBy in 2 different projects, so maybe I'm missing something in the setup... But I can't figure what! The instruction is like this: this.platform1Sprite.runAction(cc.MoveBy.create(1, cc.p(200, 0))); I don't get any error, simply it doesn't work. platform1Sprite is a Sprite.   I'm trying to figure out how to configure KDE for new users. That is: setting up KDE and make these settings default for every user upon her first login. I know that there's /etc/skel but it's not working nicely because KDE writes user- and machine-specific stuff in its users configuration files and I want this to work for every user on every machine. Also modifying stuff in /usr/share seems wrong to me as well as stuff there could get overwritten by an update or - even worse - modifications there could make auto upgrade fail. So, is there a standard way of doing this? Thanks

  We are trying to figure out the best practice for working with very large DBs in Java. What we do is a kind of BI (business Intelligence), i.e analyzing very large DBs, and using them to create intermediate DBs that represent intelligent knowledge of the DBs. We are currently using JDBC, and just preforming queries using a ResultSet. As more and more data is being created, we are wondering whether more appropriate ways exist for parsing and manipulating these large DBs: We need to support 'chunk' manipulation and not an entire DB at once(e.g. limit in JDBC, very poor performance) We do not need to be constantly connected since we are just pulling results and creating new tables of our own. We want to understand JDBC alternatives, with respect to advantages and disadvantages. Whether you think JDBC is the way to go or not, what are the best practices to go by depending on context (e.g. for large DBs queried in chunks)?

• Ubuntu not selectable in boot menu

  Im trying to dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10. i created a partition in windows 7, booted the Ubuntu cd, installed Ubuntu and created a swap space(following all instructions detailed in various video tutorials). after restarting and taking out the disk my computer boots directly into windows. also, in the boot menu where you select what os to boot, Ubuntu doesn't show up, just windows 7. i didn't want to screw around with any settings and figured the community could figure out my problem faster than i could :p any help is greatly appreciated!

I was able to do the first step and installed libdvdread4, but when I got to the second step of installing libdvdcss, I got what amounted to error messages.   I have Ubuntu 12.04 with a kernal of 3.0.0-17-generic (#30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 17:34:21 UT When I tried to copy files to a San Disk Cruzer 8gb usb drive, the copy process went a short way and then completely stopped. Although I have copied items to the USB drive from my PC before, this time the files would start quickly enough but always stop shortly after starting. I figure the 8 gb was bad, so I went and got a brand new 32 gb usb drive from a store, unpackaged it and plugged it in, still unable to copy to the usb drive. So is there some kind of incompatibility or issue where San Disk Cruzer Glides are no longer supporting it. Is there an obscure setting that I am missing? Any help would be appreciated

  This question already has an answer here: How do you generate tileable Perlin noise? 9 answers If you place a map of the world on a sphere, it will look like the image is continuous. Basically the left end of the image is sort of a continuation of the right end. You won't be able to see any cuts. I'm trying to create a clouds texture to add to my planet such that it will seem it has clouds. I managed to create the clouds in GIMP, however, I can't figure out how to make sure the left end of my image is a smooth continuation of the right end. For example if you were to map the below image to your sphere (I removed transparency to make it clearer), there would be a very obvious transition from the right end of the image back to the left end on your sphere. How would I create a texture such that I get rid of that? Sorry for my lack of terminology.

  I installed Skype on my nephew's new Ubuntu 14.04 LTS machine, and now we've decided to remove it. But I'm not able to locate it in my Installed programs section of Ubuntu Software Center. I'm able to call it up by opening the debian package, Software Center opens it up, but where I would normally see the "Remove" button, I have a "Reinstall" button. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to uninstall Skype. Any suggestions? In case you're wondering I used the version of Skype designed for 12.xx, as there was no option available for Ubuntu 14.xx.

• Why can't I change my icon theme in gnome-classic?

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (updated) and gnome-classic (I missed it :3) I've tried setting my icon theme, GTK theme, and window theme in gnome-tweak-tool, as well as Ubuntu Tweak, gconf-editor, and dconf-editor. Even though it shows my selections are selected, the icons and themes stay the same. Any Help would be greatly appreciated! Update: I've tested things out on gnome-shell and Unity, and I have full control over icons and such in those environments, but still no control in gnome-classic. I would really like to figure this out. Update 2: It seems that after uninstalling Unity that I have full control over everything. Any explanation (since Unity or some part of it seemed to be the cause) would be really nice.

• Upgrade to 11.10 left me with Kmail not working

  On my way from 10.10 to 12.04 I chose to do the step by step (11.04 then 11.10 then 12.04) because I could not figure if I should do that or a direct install of 12.04LTS. After the first step (11.04) all was well. The next day I upgraded to 11.10. Now I seem to have lost my data in KOrganizer and all of my email history in KMail. KMail still has my email accounts but my tree structure of folders is missing as is all of the emails that should be there. Also, when KMail opens I get the following: KMail encountered a fatal error and will terminate now. The error was: Failed to fetch the resource collection. Clicking OK closes KMail. KAlarm appears OK and my browser history is still in place as are various data files. What to do??

• Setting folder permission so it isn't deletable, but everything else is allowed

  I want to set permissions to a folder such that, when I'm normally logged in (meaning not as root), this folder isn't deletable, but I can still change the name of this folder and move in around in my system ? IS this possible and if yes, how to set the permission ? I already tried different combinations for the permissions but couldn't figure out how to do it. Also (side question), if some folder hast some permission set and I copy this folder, along with its contents (assuming I am allowed to read it) to a memory, are these permission preserved ? I suppose not, since under Windows I could delete the folder on the stick, even if under Ubuntu it isn't allowed to delete it...

• What is the primary use of Vertex Buffer Objects?

  From what I've read, it seems VBOs are purely for performance. I'm working on a very rudimentary learning project in lwjgl and I'm just trying to figure out what more advanced features of the library I should be delving into, and what their use is. My understanding is that VBOs allow a person to keep vertexes in VRAM while they aren't currently being drawn in a scene. In my case, I'm just drawing quads and performance probably isn't a concern at all, but I'm trying to piece together what's happening under the hood. If I'm drawing quads directly, I'm drawing from the CPU memory, correct? Also, if I'm not doing any checks for visibility, does that mean I'm rendering absolutely everything in the "scene", regardless of whether its in view? Are VBOs a way to store objects and only render what's needed?

• Drives will not show up on PCI RAID card in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Computer specs Intel E8200 Dual Core MSI G45M MB Ultra U12-40739 PCI Expansion Card - 2 SATA Internal Ports, 1.5Gbps, RAID 0, 1, JBOD 6 GB DDR2 Q1. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Amahi, for using Grey Hole, last night. The two disc on the raid card do not show up under Ubuntu 12.04LTS but they do show up under grey hole so I know the drives and the raid card are working and there. I need to access them in Ubuntu to format them and place folders on them but I can not see them or figure out how to access them. Q2. Only 4 of the six drives connected to the MB are showing in Ubuntu, but they show as active in grey hole. I also need to access these drives in Ubuntu as this is my storage server. I am new to LINUX so any help you can provide with simple directions will be greatly appreciated . Thank you Mechh69

I have a site that I've built in HTML and CSS that I'd like to upload to Azure but I can't figure out any way to do this.   I Need to create connection between ios to windows by using socket programming in ios. I'm trying to to use an application to communicate with Windows via sockets. At the minimum, I'm trying to at least figure out how I can create a connection from the iPhone (maybe using the iPhone to ping the Windows machine?) I'm not really clear on where I need to start. I'm pretty new to iOS development in general, and brand new to socket/network programming. I've tried several tutorials that haven't gotten me far. My goal is: Connect to a server via sockets (the server will be a Windows machine with a service waiting for incoming connections from the iPhone) If possible, I would like to write/build the client piece first, but I have been lost thus far.
