• Diagramming software with API allowing high customisation of shapes and actions

  I am after something like Visio or Lucid. A relatively simple charting/diagramming tool, to build tree-like structures from (my) pre-defined nodes (squares), but with a powerful API. Requirements: limit the type of objects allowed to be dropped on the diagram validate a model (e.g. node of type A must precede node of type B; must enter node Title) export a model import a model Our domain is very specific, and its a tool we'd want to offer to some of our power users. The $500 Visio licence isn't really within the business model. I'll put no constraints on framework or deployment (web or desktop) - is there anything out there?

• Can using an apt proxy (d-i mirror/http/proxy string http://mymirror) affect the installation of a .deb?

  I have been doing Ubuntu deployment using a preseed.cfg. After becoming comfortable with the packages being installed it was time to reduce download time and internet traffic by creating a mirror. I ended up doing a "partial mirror" using apt-cacher-ng and preseeding it by adding d-i mirror/http/proxy string http://mymirror to the preseed.cfg. This is where things got strange. I have a few .debs that I run as part of preseed/late_command by wgetting them and installing them with dpkg -i. The packages were installing without issue until added the proxy. With the proxy they fail to install. So does the proxy affect installing .debs during preseeded installation?

• What can I use to set up a 100% cloud based python IDE + Hosting environment?

  I'm working a side project and I can't always be on "my" machine to code/deploy the web application. I am aware of various cloud IDEs (e.g., Cloud 9 IDE) and independent Django/Flask etc., hosting services (e.g., Heroku). What is the best way to completely shift my development/deployment environment to the cloud so that I can code/deploy from anywhere? I don't mind using paid services but I'm not sure which cloud IDEs play nice with which hosting services. Has anyone tried this setup before? What has or hasn't worked? I want to minimize the manual intervention in 'connecting the two services' as much as possible. I'm going to be using Django, MySQL and Redis for the web-app

  It's been some time since I have posted an entry. Now, with the release of Oracle Communications Calendar Server 7 Update 3, it seems high time to jump start this blog again. To begin with, check out what's new in this release: Authenticating Against an External Directory Booking Window for Calendars Changes to the davadmin Command Enable and Disable Account Autocreation LDAP Pools New Configuration Parameters New Languages New populate-davuniqueid Utility New Schema Objects Non-active Calendar Accounts Are No Longer Searched or Fetched Remote Document Store Authentication The upgrade is a bit more complicated than normal, as you must first apply some new schema elements to your Directory Server(s). To do so, you need to get the comm_dssetup 6.4 patch, patch the comm_dssetup script, and then run the patched comm_dssetup against your Directory Server(s) instances. In addition, if you are using the nsUniqueId attribute as your deployment's unique identifier, you'll want to change that to the new davUniqueId attribute. Consult the Upgrade Procedure for details, as well as DaBrain's blog, before forging ahead with this upgrade. • Multiple Java EE Agents on Single Managed Server

  A default JEE agent is created when you create domain, which is named as OracleDIAgent. 1. In Studio, duplicate the agent, change its name to genAgent, change the web application context to genagent. 2: Go to datasource of genAgent, drop all datasources.3: Generate server template. put the jar file under odi\common\templates\wls 4: Deploy this template by update the existing domain. Bring up the config.cmd, choose update existing domain. 5: Update the domain using the template that just generated. Go through the Configuration wizard. (I did not modify anything or configure anything here). 6: The wizard will give information says the deployment was successful. 7: Bring up the admin server and ODI_server1.

• MSM Merge Modules in Visual Studio 2013 [on hold]

  Could someone please let me know where I might find resources for creating MSM files? While I am able to create MSI files using InstallShield, it seems that Visual Studio no longer supports Merge Module Projects, judging by the link below and the screenshot of my version of Visual Studio 2013 - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/z6z02ts5(v=vs.80).aspx To create a new merge module project: On the File menu, point to Add, then click New Project. In the resulting Add New Project dialog box, in the Project types pane, open the Other Project Types node and select Setup and Deployment Projects. In the Templates pane, choose Merge Module Project.

  The firm I work at keeps a copy of the compiled source code on production. So basically on our Production server, we have two folders: ProductionServer\SourceCode\ ProductionServer\SourceCodeRollback\ The Rollback folder always contains one version older code. This is done so that on deployment nights, if something is wrong with the new code, the deployer(who is not familiar with source control software) has the older version to revert back to. My question is: Is there an official computer science term/nomenclature for the Rollback folder? Or is "Rollback" itself the official term?

• Oracle Open World 2012

  I'll be at Oracle Open World 2012 next week in San Francisco. I'm presenting in a session entitled "What’s New with Oracle VM Server for x86 and SPARC Architectures: A Technical Deep Dive", along with Adam Hawley. We'll be talking about Oracle's overall virtualization strategy, what's new with Oracle server virtualization on both x86 and SPARC, as well as an update on Oracle's virtualization management capabilities. The session runs from 11:45am to 12:45pm on Wednesday 10/3, in Moscone South - room 252. • GlassFish 4.0 Virtualization Progress - VirtualBox

  Wouldn't it be nice if you could spawn GlassFish instances as VirtualBox virtual machines? Well now with early versions of GlassFish 4.0 you can! This page on the GlassFish Wiki documents the steps to get this to work. It walks you through the various VirtualBox (network and services) and GlassFish configuration steps including the creation of VDI templates (typically JeOS images) to finally create a virtual machine on the fly, as part of the typical GlassFish deployment process. The more general virtualization support in GlassFish is discussed in this other Wiki page. Earlier demonstrations of GlassFish.next prototypes or early milestone builds showed support for KVM, "laptop mode" and OVM as well as community involvement from Serli, speaking of which this slide-deck is a good summary of what we're trying to achieve in the GlassFish 4.0 IMS (IaaS Management Service).

• New CodePlex Project&ndash;SPDeployRetract

  I have just finished a new CodePlex project named SPDeployRetract. This is a sophisticated PowerShell script that allows you to to deploy solutions and InfoPath forms with ease. It is especially beneficial because once you set up the instructions in the xml input, you can repeat the process in farm after farm without error. The script also allows for easy retraction. You may always retract the last deployment by setting the instructions to do so. This is possible because every action taken is recorded and old versions of each WSP are backed up for redeployment. • $ON_USER returning root instead of $USER

  Hello everybody! With Natty coming out soon, I've been at work updating my deployment and self-config script to make my desktop on 11.04 run and look the way I want it to. One bummer is that dbus seems to have changed and does not permit, in the same manner Lucid and Maverick did, the authentication of the current user by terminal call using grep and cat. Ideally, to run the script, I would sudo -s and then launch it as # chmod +x install && ./install Instead of returning my user name.. it now returns root and applies changes to the root profile and aborts whenever paths do not correspond. Here is my script header: #!/bin/bash ON_USER=$(echo ~ | awk -F'/' '{ print $1 $2 $3 }' | sed 's/home//g') export $(grep -v "^#" ~/.dbus/session-bus/`cat /var/lib/dbus/machine-id`-0) if sudo -u $ON_USER test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS" ; then eval `sudo -u $ON_USER dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session` fi RELEASE=$(lsb_release -cs) How could I make it return the actual user now that natty is coming? • Drawing application on OpenGL for iOS (iPad)

  Some help is needed. I'm developing drawing application on OpenGL (deployment target 4.0) for iOS (iPad). We have 3 drawing tools: pen, marker (with alfa) and eraser. I draw with textures, using blending in orthographic projection. I can't use z-ordering because in this case I have to face a lot of troubles with cutting and erasing. The thing that I need is to make the pen be always on the top. When I first use marker and than pen - it's ok. But if I use pen first and marker over the pen - I can't see pen color under marker. I'd appreciate any help or advice. Thank you veeeeeery much!

• AWS CloudFormations, Oracle Assembly Builder, Chef and Puppet

  I blogged about the difference and similarities between AWS CloudFormations and Oracle Assembler builder to package your software stack for deployment/provisioning to the cloud. However, these tools do not deal with software stack versioning and configuration management. This is where tools like Chef and Puppet come into play. Puppet and Chef points of interest: 1. Can be used in any cloud environment (rackspace, private cloud etc). 2. There is a debate between which is better. I am not going to get into this debate other then to say Puppet is more mature. 3. AWS CloudFormations can integration with both Chef and Puppet. A good blog on AWS CloudFormations and the need for something more: AWS CloudFormation
