  • help me to choose between two designs

    - by alex
    // stupid title, but I could not think anything smarter I have a code (see below, sorry for long code but it's very-very simple): namespace Option1 { class AuxClass1 { string _field1; public string Field1 { get { return _field1; } set { _field1 = value; } } // another fields. maybe many fields maybe several properties public void Method1() { // some action } public void Method2() { // some action 2 } } class MainClass { AuxClass1 _auxClass; public AuxClass1 AuxClass { get { return _auxClass; } set { _auxClass = value; } } public MainClass() { _auxClass = new AuxClass1(); } } } namespace Option2 { class AuxClass1 { string _field1; public string Field1 { get { return _field1; } set { _field1 = value; } } // another fields. maybe many fields maybe several properties public void Method1() { // some action } public void Method2() { // some action 2 } } class MainClass { AuxClass1 _auxClass; public string Field1 { get { return _auxClass.Field1; } set { _auxClass.Field1 = value; } } public void Method1() { _auxClass.Method1(); } public void Method2() { _auxClass.Method2(); } public MainClass() { _auxClass = new AuxClass1(); } } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { // Option1 Option1.MainClass mainClass1 = new Option1.MainClass(); mainClass1.AuxClass.Field1 = "string1"; mainClass1.AuxClass.Method1(); mainClass1.AuxClass.Method2(); // Option2 Option2.MainClass mainClass2 = new Option2.MainClass(); mainClass2.Field1 = "string2"; mainClass2.Method1(); mainClass2.Method2(); Console.ReadKey(); } } What option (option1 or option2) do you prefer ? In which cases should I use option1 or option2 ? Is there any special name for option1 or option2 (composition, aggregation) ?

  • WPF bound object update notification

    - by Carlo
    I have a TreeView with a few objects bound to it, let's say something like this: public class House { public List<Room> Rooms { get; set; } public List<Person> People { get; set; } public House() { this.Rooms = new List<Room>(); this.People = new List<Person>(); } public void BuildRoom(string name) { this.Rooms.Add(new Room() { Name = name }); } public void DestroyRoom(string name) { this.Rooms.Remove(new Room() { Name = name }); } public void PersonEnter(string name) { this.People.Add(new Person() { Name = name }); } public void PersonLeave(string name) { this.People.Remove(new Person() { Name = name }); } } public class Room { public string Name { get; set; } } public class Person { public string Name { get; set; } } The TreeView is watching over the House object, whenever a room is built / destroyed or a person enters / leaves, my tree view updates itself to show the new state of the house (I omitted some implementation details for simplicity). What I want is to know the exact moment when this update finishes, so I can do something right there, the thing is that I created an indicator of the selected item, and when something moves, I need to update said indicator's position, that's the reason I need it exactly when the tree view updates. Let me know if you know a solution to this. Also, the code is not perfect (DestroyRoom and PersonLeave), but you get the idea. Thanks!

  • Problems with binding to Window Height and Width

    - by D.H.
    I have some problems when I try to bind the height and width of a window to properties in my view model. Here is a small sample app to illustrate the problem. This is the code in app.xaml.xs public partial class App : Application { protected override void OnStartup(StartupEventArgs e) { base.OnStartup(e); MainWindow mainWindow = new MainWindow(); MainWindowViewModel mainWindowViewModel = new MainWindowViewModel(); mainWindow.DataContext = mainWindowViewModel; mainWindow.Show(); } } This is MainWindow.xaml: <Window x:Class="TestApp.MainWindow" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Height="{Binding WindowHeight}" Width="{Binding WindowWidth}" BorderThickness="{Binding WindowBorderThickness}"> </Window> And this is the view model: public class MainWindowViewModel { public int WindowWidth { get { return 100; } } public int WindowHeight { get { return 200; } } public int WindowBorderThickness { get { return 8; } } } When the program is started the getters of WindowHeight and WindowBorderThickness (but not WindowWidth) are called, so the height and the border of the window is set properly, but not the width. I then add button that will trigger PropertyChanged for all properties, so that the view model now looks like this: public class MainWindowViewModel : INotifyPropertyChanged { public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; public void TriggerPropertyChanges() { if (PropertyChanged != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("WindowWidth")); PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("WindowHeight")); PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("WindowBorderThickness")); } } public ICommand ButtonCommand { get { return new RelayCommand(delegate { TriggerPropertyChanges(); }); } } public int WindowWidth { get { return 100; } } public int WindowHeight { get { return 200; } } public int WindowBorderThickness { get { return 8; } } } Now, when I click the button, the getter of WindowBorderThickness is called, but not the ones for WindowWidth and WindowHeight. It all just seems very weird and inconsistent to me. What am I missing?

  • Project Naming Convention Feedback Please

    - by Sam Striano
    I am creating a ASP.NET MVC 3 application using Entity Framework 4. I am using the Repository/Service Pattern and was looking for feedback. I currently have the following: MVC Application (GTG.dll) GTG GTG.Controllers GTG.ViewModels Business POCO's (GTG.Business.dll) This contains all business objects (Customer, Order, Invoice, etc...) EF Model/Repositories (GTG.Data.dll) GTG.Business (GTG.Context.tt) I used the Entity POCO Generator Templates. GTG.Data.Repositories Service Layer (GTG.Data.Services.dll) GTG.Data.Services - Contains all of the service objects, one per aggregate root. The following is a little sample code: Controller Namespace Controllers Public Class HomeController Inherits System.Web.Mvc.Controller Function Index() As ActionResult Return View(New Models.HomeViewModel) End Function End Class End Namespace Model Namespace Models Public Class HomeViewModel Private _Service As CustomerService Public Property Customers As List(Of Customer) Public Sub New() _Service = New CustomerService _Customers = _Service.GetCustomersByBusinessName("Striano") End Sub End Class End Namespace Service Public Class CustomerService Private _Repository As ICustomerRepository Public Sub New() _Repository = New CustomerRepository End Sub Function GetCustomerByID(ByVal ID As Integer) As Customer Return _Repository.GetByID(ID) End Function Function GetCustomersByBusinessName(ByVal Name As String) As List(Of Customer) Return _Repository.Query(Function(x) x.CompanyName.StartsWith(Name)).ToList End Function End Class Repository Namespace Data.Repositories Public Class CustomerRepository Implements ICustomerRepository Public Sub Add(ByVal Entity As Business.Customer) Implements IRepository(Of Business.Customer).Add End Sub Public Sub Delete(ByVal Entity As Business.Customer) Implements IRepository(Of Business.Customer).Delete End Sub Public Function GetByID(ByVal ID As Integer) As Business.Customer Implements IRepository(Of Business.Customer).GetByID Using db As New GTGContainer Return db.Customers.FirstOrDefault(Function(x) x.ID = ID) End Using End Function Public Function Query(ByVal Predicate As System.Linq.Expressions.Expression(Of System.Func(Of Business.Customer, Boolean))) As System.Linq.IQueryable(Of Business.Customer) Implements IRepository(Of Business.Customer).Query Using db As New GTGContainer Return db.Customers.Where(Predicate) End Using End Function Public Sub Save(ByVal Entity As Business.Customer) Implements IRepository(Of Business.Customer).Save End Sub End Class End Namespace

  • Dilemma with two types and operator +

    - by user35443
    I have small problem with operators. I have this code: public class A { public string Name { get; set; } public A() { } public A(string Name) { this.Name = Name; } public static implicit operator B(A a) { return new B(a.Name); } public static A operator+(A a, A b) { return new A(a.Name + " " + b.Name); } } public class B { public string Name { get; set; } public B() { } public B(string Name) { this.Name = Name; } public static implicit operator A(B b) { return new A(b.Name); } public static B operator +(B b, B a) { return new B(b.Name + " " + a.Name); } } Now I want to know, which's conversion operator will be called and which's addition operator will be called in this operation: new A("a") + new B("b"); Will it be operator of A, or of B? (Or both?) Thanks....

  • look up constants based on value.

    - by PLangeberg
    I have a 3rd party struct that is comprised of the following: [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential, Size=1)] public struct BigBlueReasonCodes { public const int ABC_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 1000; public const int ABC_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 1005; public const int ABC_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 1010; public const int DEF_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 2001; public const int DEF_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 2010; public const int DEF_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 2013; public const int GHI_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 3050; public const int GHI_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 3051; public const int GHI_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = 3052; public const string JKL_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = "XYZ; public const string GHI_REASONCODE_DESCRIPTION01 = "ST"; static BigblueReasonCodes(); } I am trying to look up the reason description(the field name) based on the reason code(the value) so my class can do someting like: string failureReason = GetReasonDescription(reasoncode); Somethings of mention are some have int values and some have string values. I am only worried about the ones with int values. I also only want the ones that start with GHI_ if possible but not a big deal.

  • How should I model the database for this problem? And which ORM can handle it?

    - by Kristof Claes
    I need to build some sort of a custom CMS for a client of ours. These are some of the functional requirements: Must be able to manage the list of Pages in the site Each Page can contain a number of ColumnGroups A ColumnGroup is nothing more than a list of Columns in a certain ColumnGroupLayout. For example: "one column taking up the entire width of the page", "two columns each taking up half of the width", ... Each Column can contain a number ContentBlocks Examples of a ContentBlock are: TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ... ContentBlocks can be given a certain sorting within a Column A ContentBlock can be put in different Columns so that content can be reused without having to be duplicated. My first quick draft of how this could look like in C# code (we're using ASP.NET 4.0 to develop the CMS) can be found at the bottom of my question. One of the technical requirements is that it must be as easy as possible to add new types of ContentBlocks to the CMS. So I would like model everything as flexible as possible. Unfortunately, I'm already stuck at trying to figure out how the database should look like. One of the problems I'm having has to do with sorting different types of ContentBlocks in a Column. I guess each type of ContentBlock (like TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ...) should have it's own table in the database because each has it's own different fields. A TextBlock might only have a field called Text whereas a NewsBlock might have fields for the Text, the Summary, the PublicationDate, ... Since one Column can have ContentBlocks located in different tables, I guess I'll have to create a many-to-many association for each type of ContentBlock. For example: ColumnTextBlocks, ColumnNewsBlocks and ColumnPictureBlocks. The problem I have with this setup is the sorting of the different ContentBlocks in a column. This could be something like this: TextBlock NewsBlock TextBlock TextBlock PictureBlock Where do I store the sorting number? If I store them in the associaton tables, I'll have to update a lot of tables when changing the sorting order of ContentBlocks in a Column. Is this a good approach to the problem? Basically, my question is: What is the best way to model this keeping in mind that it should be easy to add new types of ContentBlocks? My next question is: What ORM can deal with that kind of modeling? To be honest, we are ORM-virgins at work. I have been reading a bit about Linq-to-SQL and NHibernate, but we have no experience with them. Because of the IList in the Column class (see code below) I think we can rule out Linq-to-SQL, right? Can NHibernate handle the mapping of data from many different tables to one IList? Also keep in mind that this is just a very small portion of the domain. Other parts are Users belonging to a certain UserGroup having certain Permissions on Pages, ColumnGroups, Columns and ContentBlocks. The code (just a quick first draft): public class Page { public int PageID { get; set; } public string Title { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public string Keywords { get; set; } public IList<ColumnGroup> ColumnGroups { get; set; } } public class ColumnGroup { public enum ColumnGroupLayout { OneColumn, HalfHalf, NarrowWide, WideNarrow } public int ColumnGroupID { get; set; } public ColumnGroupLayout Layout { get; set; } public IList<Column> Columns { get; set; } } public class Column { public int ColumnID { get; set; } public IList<IContentBlock> ContentBlocks { get; set; } } public interface IContentBlock { string GetSummary(); } public class TextBlock : IContentBlock { public string GetSummary() { return "I am a piece of text."; } } public class NewsBlock : IContentBlock { public string GetSummary() { return "I am a news item."; } }

  • Reworking my singly linked list

    - by Stradigos
    Hello everyone, thanks for taking the time to stop by my question. Below you will find my working SLL, but I want to make more use of C# and, instead of having two classes, SLL and Node, I want to use Node's constructors to do all the work (To where if you pass a string through the node, the constructor will chop it up into char nodes). The problem is, after an a few hours of tinkering, I'm not really getting anywhere... using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using System.IO; namespace PalindromeTester { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { SLL mySLL = new SLL(); mySLL.add('a'); mySLL.add('b'); mySLL.add('c'); mySLL.add('d'); mySLL.add('e'); mySLL.add('f'); Console.Out.WriteLine("Node count = " + mySLL.count); mySLL.reverse(); mySLL.traverse(); Console.Out.WriteLine("\n The header is: " + mySLL.gethead); Console.In.ReadLine(); } class Node { private char letter; private Node next; public Node() { next = null; } public Node(char c) { this.data = c; } public Node(string s) { } public char data { get { return letter; } set { letter = value; } } public Node nextNode { get { return next; } set { next = value; } } } class SLL { private Node head; private int totalNode; public SLL() { head = null; totalNode = 0; } public void add(char s) { if (head == null) { head = new Node(); head.data = s; } else { Node temp; temp = new Node(); temp.data = s; temp.nextNode = head; head = temp; } totalNode++; } public int count { get { return totalNode; } } public char gethead { get { return head.data; } } public void traverse() { Node temp = head; while(temp != null) { Console.Write(temp.data + " "); temp = temp.nextNode; } } public void reverse() { Node q = null; Node p = this.head; while(p!=null) { Node r=p; p=p.nextNode; r.nextNode=q; q=r; } this.head = q; } } } } Here's what I have so far in trying to work it into Node's constructors: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using System.IO; namespace PalindromeTester { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { //Node myList = new Node(); //TextReader tr = new StreamReader("data.txt"); //string line; //while ((line = tr.ReadLine()) != null) //{ // Console.WriteLine(line); //} //tr.Close(); Node myNode = new Node("hello"); Console.Out.WriteLine(myNode.count); myNode.reverse(); myNode.traverse(); // Console.Out.WriteLine(myNode.gethead); Console.In.ReadLine(); } class Node { private char letter; private Node next; private Node head; private int totalNode; public Node() { head = null; totalNode = 0; } public Node(char c) { if (head == null) { head = new Node(); head.data = c; } else { Node temp; temp = new Node(); temp.data = c; temp.nextNode = head; head = temp; } totalNode++; } public Node(string s) { foreach (char x in s) { new Node(x); } } public char data { get { return letter; } set { letter = value; } } public Node nextNode { get { return next; } set { next = value; } } public void reverse() { Node q = null; Node p = this.head; while (p != null) { Node r = p; p = p.nextNode; r.nextNode = q; q = r; } this.head = q; } public void traverse() { Node temp = head; while (temp != null) { Console.Write(temp.data + " "); temp = temp.nextNode; } } public int count { get { return totalNode; } } } } } Ideally, the only constructors and methods I would be left with are Node(), Node(char c), Node(string s), Node reserve() and I'll be reworking traverse into a ToString overload. Any suggestions?

  • winForms Booking Class Help

    Hi, I am using C# Windows Forms in visual studio with different classes performing different functions in my program. I have a "Program" main class with the following information: static class Program { /// <summary> /// The main entry point for the application. /// </summary> [STAThread] static void Main() { Application.EnableVisualStyles(); Application.SetCompatibleTextRenderingDefault(false); Application.Run(new Form1()); } } and a Screen class with the following information class Screen { public List<Show> shows { get; private set; } public int ScreenNumber { get; private set; } public Screen(int screenNumber, params Show[] schedule) { this.ScreenNumber = screenNumber; this.shows = schedule.ToList<Show>(); } } and a Seat class with the following information public class Seat { private string name; public bool IsAvailable { get; set; } public decimal Price { get; private set; } public int Number { get; private set; } public Seat(bool isAvailable, int number) { this.IsAvailable = isAvailable; this.name = String.Format("Seat {0}",number); this.Price = 7.50m; this.Number = number; } public override string ToString() { return this.name; } } and finally a Show class with the following information public class Show { private List<Seat> seats = new List<Seat>(); public string Title { get; private set; } public string Time { get; private set; } public int ScreenNumber { get; private set; } public List<Seat> Seats { get { return this.seats; } } public Show(string title, DateTime time, int screenNumber, int numberOfSeats) { this.Title = title; this.Time = time.ToShortTimeString(); this.ScreenNumber = screenNumber; this.initSeats(numberOfSeats); } private void initSeats(int numberOfSeats) { for (int i = 0; i < numberOfSeats; i++) this.seats.Add(new Seat(true, i + 1)); } }` these all feed into two different winForms to create a booking system for shows. therefore i need to collate the data given in program and output it into a txt file. any help will be much appreciated NOTE: the code for FORM1 which allows the user to select which show they want is: namespace CindysSeats { public partial class Form1 : Form { private Cinema cinema = new Cinema(); //booked show could be added to booking object when you create it so that it is easily writable to the external file private Show selectedShow; public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); this.showList_dg.DataSource = this.cinema.GetShowList(); } private void showList_dg_RowHeaderMouseClick(object sender, DataGridViewCellMouseEventArgs e) { Show selectedShow = this.selectedShow = this.cinema.GetShowList()[e.RowIndex]; this.showTitle_lbl.Text = selectedShow.Title; this.showTime_lbl.Text = selectedShow.Time; this.showScreen_lbl.Text = selectedShow.ScreenNumber.ToString(); } private void confirmShow_btn_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (this.selectedShow == null) return; Form2 seats = new Form2(this.selectedShow); seats.Show(); } And the code for FORM2 which is where the user selects their seats they want is: namespace CindysSeats { public partial class Form2 : Form { //booked seats could be added to booking object when you create it so that it is easily writable to the external file private List<Seat> bookedSeats = new List<Seat>(); private Show selectedShow; public Form2(Show selectedShow) { InitializeComponent(); this.selectedShow = selectedShow; this.showSeats_dg.DataSource = this.selectedShow.Seats; } private void showSeats_dg_RowHeaderMouseClick(object sender, DataGridViewCellMouseEventArgs e) { Seat selectedSeat = this.selectedShow.Seats[e.RowIndex]; if(this.bookedSeats.Contains(selectedSeat)) return; if(!selectedSeat.IsAvailable) return; this.bookedSeats.Add(selectedSeat); this.bookedSeats_lv.Items.Add(selectedSeat.ToString() + " " + selectedSeat.Price.ToString()+"\n"); this.bookedSeats_lv.Invalidate(); } private void bookSeats_btn_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { } } thank you for helping

  • JDBC CommunicationsException with MySQL Database

    - by Dominik Siebel
    I'm having a little trouble with my MySQL- Connection- Pooling. This is the case: Different jobs are scheduled via Quartz. All jobs connect to different databases which works fine the whole day while the nightly scheduled jobs fail with a CommunicationsException... Quartz-Jobs: Job1 runs 0 0 6,10,14,18 * * ? Job2 runs 0 30 10,18 * * ? Job3 runs 0 0 5 * * ? As you can see the last job runs at 18 taking about 1 hour to run. The first job at 5am is the one that fails. I already tried all kinds of parameter-combinations in my resource config this is the one I am running right now: <!-- Database 1 (MySQL) --> <Resource auth="Container" driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver" maxActive="100" maxIdle="30" maxWait="10000" removeAbandoned="true" removeAbandonedTimeout="60" logAbandoned="true" type="javax.sql.DataSource" name="jdbc/appDbProd" username="****" password="****" url="jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/appDbProd?autoReconnect=true&amp;useUnicode=true&amp;characterEncoding=UTF-8" testWhileIdle="true" testOnBorrow="true" testOnReturn="true" validationQuery="SELECT 1" timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis="1800000" /> <!-- Database 2 (MySQL) --> <Resource auth="Container" driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver" maxActive="100" maxIdle="30" maxWait="10000" removeAbandoned="true" removeAbandonedTimeout="60" logAbandoned="true" type="javax.sql.DataSource" name="jdbc/prodDbCopy" username="****" password="****" url="jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/prodDbCopy?autoReconnect=true&amp;useUnicode=true&amp;characterEncoding=UTF-8" testWhileIdle="true" testOnBorrow="true" testOnReturn="true" validationQuery="SELECT 1" timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis="1800000" /> <!-- Database 3 (MSSQL)--> <Resource auth="Container" driverClassName="net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver" maxActive="30" maxIdle="30" maxWait="100" removeAbandoned="true" removeAbandonedTimeout="60" logAbandoned="true" name="jdbc/catalogDb" username="****" password="****" type="javax.sql.DataSource" url="jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://127.0.0.1:1433;databaseName=catalog;useNdTLMv2=false" testWhileIdle="true" testOnBorrow="true" testOnReturn="true" validationQuery="SELECT 1" timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis="1800000" /> For obvious reasons I changed IPs, Usernames and Passwords but they can be assumed to be correct, seeing that the application runs successfully the whole day. The most annoying thing is: The first job that runs first queries Database2 successfully but fails to query Database1 for some reason (CommunicationsException): Caused by: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was 39,376,539 milliseconds ago. The last packet sent successfully to the server was 39,376,539 milliseconds ago. is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • java/Swing issue with paintComponent

    - by user310254
    The issue I'm having is issue with is I'm trying to get the paintComponent to draw the circle only when the mouse is clicked, dragged, then let go. However inside my paintPanel class I have to initialize the object I've created (ex. movedCircle myCircle = new movedCircle(0,0,0,0);) just creating the object movedCircle myCircle; gives an error until I actually fully initialize the object with a value. What I'm looking for: What's considered the best practice for this issue. I don't want to draw anything unnecessary before it is needed. The way I know how to fix it: boolean values inside of paintComponent so that way it doesn't draw until somethings actually there. import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.*; import java.awt.event.*; public class drawCircle extends JFrame{ private JPanel myPanel = new paintPanel(); public drawCircle(){ add(myPanel); } private class paintPanel extends JPanel{ private int x1, y1, x2, y2; movedText myText = new movedText(0,0,0,0); movedCircle myCircle = new movedCircle(0,0,0,0); public paintPanel(){ addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter(){ public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e){ x1 = e.getX(); y1 = e.getY(); myCircle = new movedCircle(x1, y1, 0, 0); repaint(); } public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent e){ x2 = e.getX(); y2 = e.getY(); myCircle = new movedCircle(x1, y1, x2, y2); repaint(); } }); addMouseMotionListener(new MouseMotionAdapter(){ public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent e){ x2 = e.getX(); y2 = e.getY(); myText = new movedText(x1, y1, x2, y2); myCircle = new movedCircle(x1, y1, x2, y2); repaint(); } public void mouseMoved(MouseEvent e){ x1 = e.getX(); y1 = e.getY(); x2 = 0; y2 = 0; myText = new movedText(x1, y1, x2, y2); repaint(); } }); } protected void paintComponent(Graphics g){ super.paintComponent(g); //draw oval after mouse released myText.paintText(g); myCircle.paintCircle(g); } } class movedCircle{ private int x1, y1, x2, y2; public movedCircle(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2){ this.x1 = x1; this.y1 = y1; this.x2 = x2; this.y2 = y2; } public void paintCircle(Graphics g){ g.drawOval(x1, y1, x2 - x1, y2 - y1); } } class movedText{ private int x1, y1, x2, y2; public movedText(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2){ this.x1 = x1; this.y1 = y1; this.x2 = x2; this.y2 = y2; } public void paintText(Graphics g){ g.drawString("x1: "+x1+" y1: "+y1+" x2: "+x2+" y2: "+y2, x1, y1); } } class RedSquare{ private int xPos = 50; private int yPos = 50; private int width = 20; private int height = 20; public void setX(int xPos){ this.xPos = xPos; } public int getX(){ return xPos; } public void setY(int yPos){ this.yPos = yPos; } public int getY(){ return yPos; } public int getWidth(){ return width; } public int getHeight(){ return height; } public void paintSquare(Graphics g){ g.setColor(Color.RED); g.fillRect(xPos,yPos,width,height); g.setColor(Color.BLACK); g.drawRect(xPos,yPos,width,height); } } public static void main(String[] args){ JFrame frame = new drawCircle(); frame.setTitle("Is in ellipse?   • Introducing the Earthquake Locator – A Bing Maps Silverlight Application, part 1

    - by Bobby Diaz
    Update: Live demo and source code now available!  The recent wave of earthquakes (no pun intended) being reported in the news got me wondering about the frequency and severity of earthquakes around the world. Since I’ve been doing a lot of Silverlight development lately, I decided to scratch my curiosity with a nice little Bing Maps application that will show the location and relative strength of recent seismic activity. Here is a list of technologies this application will utilize, so be sure to have everything downloaded and installed if you plan on following along. Silverlight 3 WCF RIA Services Bing Maps Silverlight Control * Managed Extensibility Framework (optional) MVVM Light Toolkit (optional) log4net (optional) * If you are new to Bing Maps or have not signed up for a Developer Account, you will need to visit www.bingmapsportal.com to request a Bing Maps key for your application. Getting Started We start out by creating a new Silverlight Application called EarthquakeLocator and specify that we want to automatically create the Web Application Project with RIA Services enabled. I cleaned up the web app by removing the Default.aspx and EarthquakeLocatorTestPage.html. Then I renamed the EarthquakeLocatorTestPage.aspx to Default.aspx and set it as my start page. I also set the development server to use a specific port, as shown below. RIA Services Next, I created a Services folder in the EarthquakeLocator.Web project and added a new Domain Service Class called EarthquakeService.cs. This is the RIA Services Domain Service that will provide earthquake data for our client application. I am not using LINQ to SQL or Entity Framework, so I will use the <empty domain service class> option. We will be pulling data from an external Atom feed, but this example could just as easily pull data from a database or another web service. This is an important distinction to point out because each scenario I just mentioned could potentially use a different Domain Service base class (i.e. LinqToSqlDomainService<TDataContext>). Now we can start adding Query methods to our EarthquakeService that pull data from the USGS web site. Here is the complete code for our service class: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.IO; using System.Linq; using System.ServiceModel.Syndication; using System.Web.DomainServices; using System.Web.Ria; using System.Xml; using log4net; using EarthquakeLocator.Web.Model;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.Web.Services {     /// <summary>     /// Provides earthquake data to client applications.     /// </summary>     [EnableClientAccess()]     public class EarthquakeService : DomainService     {         private static readonly ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(EarthquakeService));           // USGS Data Feeds: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/catalogs/         private const string FeedForPreviousDay =             "http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/catalogs/1day-M2.5.xml";         private const string FeedForPreviousWeek =             "http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/catalogs/7day-M2.5.xml";           /// <summary>         /// Gets the earthquake data for the previous week.         /// </summary>         /// <returns>A queryable collection of <see cref="Earthquake"/> objects.</returns>         public IQueryable<Earthquake> GetEarthquakes()         {             var feed = GetFeed(FeedForPreviousWeek);             var list = new List<Earthquake>();               if ( feed != null )             {                 foreach ( var entry in feed.Items )                 {                     var quake = CreateEarthquake(entry);                     if ( quake != null )                     {                         list.Add(quake);                     }                 }             }               return list.AsQueryable();         }           /// <summary>         /// Creates an <see cref="Earthquake"/> object for each entry in the Atom feed.         /// </summary>         /// <param name="entry">The Atom entry.</param>         /// <returns></returns>         private Earthquake CreateEarthquake(SyndicationItem entry)         {             Earthquake quake = null;             string title = entry.Title.Text;             string summary = entry.Summary.Text;             string point = GetElementValue<String>(entry, "point");             string depth = GetElementValue<String>(entry, "elev");             string utcTime = null;             string localTime = null;             string depthDesc = null;             double? Model I have also created a Model folder and added a new class, Earthquake.cs. The Earthquake object will hold the various properties returned from the Atom feed. Here is a sample of the code for that class. Notice the [Key] attribute on the Id property, which is required by RIA Services to uniquely identify the entity. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Runtime.Serialization; using System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.Web.Model {     /// <summary>     /// Represents an earthquake occurrence and related information.     /// </summary>     [DataContract]     public class Earthquake     {         /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets the id.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The id.</value>         [Key]         [DataMember]         public string Id { get; set; }           /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets the title.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The title.</value>         [DataMember]         public string Title { get; set; }           /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets the summary.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The summary.</value>         [DataMember]         public string Summary { get; set; }           // additional properties omitted     } }   View Model The recent trend to use the MVVM pattern for WPF and Silverlight provides a great way to separate the data and behavior logic out of the user interface layer of your client applications. I have chosen to use the MVVM Light Toolkit for the Earthquake Locator, but there are other options out there if you prefer another library. That said, I went ahead and created a ViewModel folder in the Silverlight project and added a EarthquakeViewModel class that derives from ViewModelBase. Here is the code: using System; using System.Collections.ObjectModel; using System.ComponentModel.Composition; using System.ComponentModel.Composition.Hosting; using Microsoft.Maps.MapControl; using GalaSoft.MvvmLight; using EarthquakeLocator.Web.Model; using EarthquakeLocator.Web.Services;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.ViewModel {     /// <summary>     /// Provides data for views displaying earthquake information.     /// </summary>     public class EarthquakeViewModel : ViewModelBase     {         [Import]         public EarthquakeContext Context;             var container = new CompositionContainer(catalog);             container.ComposeParts(this);             Initialize();         }           /// <summary>         /// Initializes a new instance of the <see cref="EarthquakeViewModel"/> class.         /// </summary>         /// <param name="context">The context.</param>         public EarthquakeViewModel(EarthquakeContext context)         {             Context = context;             Initialize();         }           private void Initialize()         {             MapCenter = new Location(20, -170);             ZoomLevel = 2;         }           #region Private Methods           private void OnAutoLoadDataChanged()         {             LoadEarthquakes(); Another thing to notice is what’s going on in the default constructor. I chose to use the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF) for my composition needs, but you can use any dependency injection library or none at all. To allow the EarthquakeContext class to be discoverable by MEF, I added the following partial class so that I could supply the appropriate [Export] attribute: using System; using System.ComponentModel.Composition;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.Web.Services {     /// <summary>     /// The client side proxy for the EarthquakeService class.     /// </summary>     [Export]     public partial class EarthquakeContext     {     } }   One last piece I wanted to point out before moving on to the user interface, I added a client side partial class for the Earthquake entity that contains helper properties that we will bind to later: using System;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.Web.Model {     /// <summary>     /// Represents an earthquake occurrence and related information.     /// </summary>     public partial class Earthquake     {         /// <summary>         /// Gets the location based on the current Latitude/Longitude.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The location.</value>         public string Location         {             get { return String.Format("{0},{1}", Latitude, Longitude); }         }           /// <summary>         /// Gets the size based on the Magnitude.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The size.</value>         public double Size         {             get { return (Magnitude * 3); }         }     } }   View Now the fun part! Usually, I would create a Views folder to place all of my View controls in, but I took the easy way out and added the following XAML code to the default MainPage.xaml file. Be sure to add the bing prefix associating the Microsoft.Maps.MapControl namespace after adding the assembly reference to your project. The MVVM Light Toolkit project templates come with a ViewModelLocator class that you can use via a static resource, but I am instantiating the EarthquakeViewModel directly in my user control. I am setting the AutoLoadData property to true as a way to trigger the LoadEarthquakes() method call. The MapItemsControl found within the <bing:Map> control binds its ItemsSource property to the Earthquakes collection of the view model, and since it is an ObservableCollection<T>, we get the automatic two way data binding via the INotifyCollectionChanged interface. <UserControl x:Class="EarthquakeLocator.MainPage"     xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"     xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"     xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"     xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"     xmlns:bing="clr-namespace:Microsoft.Maps.MapControl;assembly=Microsoft.Maps.MapControl"     xmlns:vm="clr-namespace:EarthquakeLocator.ViewModel"     mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" >     <UserControl.Resources>         <DataTemplate x:Key="EarthquakeTemplate">             <Ellipse Fill="Red" Stroke="Black" StrokeThickness="1"                      Width="{Binding Size}" Height="{Binding Size}"                      bing:MapLayer.Position="{Binding Location}"                      bing:MapLayer.PositionOrigin="Center">                 <ToolTipService.ToolTip>                     <StackPanel>                         <TextBlock Text="{Binding Title}" FontSize="14" FontWeight="Bold" />                         <TextBlock Text="{Binding UtcTime}" />                         <TextBlock Text="{Binding LocalTime}" />                         <TextBlock Text="{Binding DepthDesc}" />                     </StackPanel>                 </ToolTipService.ToolTip>             </Ellipse>         </DataTemplate>     </UserControl.Resources>       <UserControl.DataContext>         <vm:EarthquakeViewModel AutoLoadData="True" />     </UserControl.DataContext>       <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot">           <bing:Map x:Name="map" CredentialsProvider="--Your-Bing-Maps-Key--"                   Center="{Binding MapCenter, Mode=TwoWay}"                   ZoomLevel="{Binding ZoomLevel, Mode=TwoWay}">             <bing:MapItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Earthquakes}"                                   ItemTemplate="{StaticResource EarthquakeTemplate}" />         </bing:Map>       </Grid> </UserControl>   The EarthquakeTemplate defines the Ellipse that will represent each earthquake, the Width and Height that are determined by the Magnitude, the Position on the map, and also the tooltip that will appear when we mouse over each data point. Running the application will give us the following result (shown with a tooltip example): That concludes this portion of our show but I plan on implementing additional functionality in later blog posts. Be sure to come back soon to see the next installments in this series. • Using a WCF Message Inspector to extend AppFabric Monitoring

    - by Shawn Cicoria
    I read through Ron Jacobs post on Monitoring WCF Data Services with AppFabric http://blogs.msdn.com/b/endpoint/archive/2010/06/09/tracking-wcf-data-services-with-windows-server-appfabric.aspx What is immediately striking are 2 things – it’s so easy to get monitoring data into a viewer (AppFabric Dashboard) w/ very little work.  And the 2nd thing is, why can’t this be a WCF message inspector on the dispatch side. So, I took the base class WCFUserEventProvider that’s located in the WCF/WF samples [1] in the following path, \WF_WCF_Samples\WCF\Basic\Management\AnalyticTraceExtensibility\CS\WCFAnalyticTracingExtensibility\  and then created a few classes that project the injection as a IEndPointBehavior There are just 3 classes to drive injection of the inspector at runtime via config: IDispatchMessageInspector implementation BehaviorExtensionElement implementation IEndpointBehavior implementation The full source code is below with a link to the solution file here: [Solution File] using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.ServiceModel.Dispatcher; using System.ServiceModel.Channels; using System.ServiceModel; using System.ServiceModel.Configuration; using System.ServiceModel.Description; using Microsoft.Samples.WCFAnalyticTracingExtensibility; namespace Fabrikam.Services { public class AppFabricE2EInspector : IDispatchMessageInspector { static WCFUserEventProvider evntProvider = null; static AppFabricE2EInspector() { evntProvider = new WCFUserEventProvider(); } public object AfterReceiveRequest( ref Message request, IClientChannel channel, InstanceContext instanceContext) { OperationContext ctx = OperationContext.Current; var opName = ctx.IncomingMessageHeaders.Action; evntProvider.WriteInformationEvent("start", string.Format("operation: {0} at address {1}", opName, ctx.EndpointDispatcher.EndpointAddress)); return null; } public void BeforeSendReply(ref System.ServiceModel.Channels.Message reply, object correlationState) { OperationContext ctx = OperationContext.Current; var opName = ctx.IncomingMessageHeaders.Action; evntProvider.WriteInformationEvent("end", string.Format("operation: {0} at address {1}", opName, ctx.EndpointDispatcher.EndpointAddress)); } } public class AppFabricE2EBehaviorElement : BehaviorExtensionElement { #region BehaviorExtensionElement /// <summary> /// Gets the type of behavior. /// </summary> /// <value></value> /// <returns>The type that implements the end point behavior<see cref="T:System.Type"/>.</returns> public override Type BehaviorType { get { return typeof(AppFabricE2EEndpointBehavior); } } /// <summary> /// Creates a behavior extension based on the current configuration settings. /// </summary> /// <returns>The behavior extension.</returns> protected override object CreateBehavior() { return new AppFabricE2EEndpointBehavior(); } #endregion BehaviorExtensionElement } public class AppFabricE2EEndpointBehavior : IEndpointBehavior //, IServiceBehavior { #region IEndpointBehavior public void AddBindingParameters(ServiceEndpoint endpoint, BindingParameterCollection bindingParameters) {} public void ApplyClientBehavior(ServiceEndpoint endpoint, ClientRuntime clientRuntime) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } public void ApplyDispatchBehavior(ServiceEndpoint endpoint, EndpointDispatcher endpointDispatcher) { endpointDispatcher.DispatchRuntime.MessageInspectors.Add(new AppFabricE2EInspector()); } public void Validate(ServiceEndpoint endpoint) { ; } #endregion IEndpointBehavior } }     [1] http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=35ec8682-d5fd-4bc3-a51a-d8ad115a8792&displaylang=en

  • XNA extending an existing Content type

    - by Maarten
    We are doing a game in XNA that reacts to music. We need to do some offline processing of the music data and therefore we need a custom type containing the Song and some additional data: // Project AudioGameLibrary namespace AudioGameLibrary { public class GameTrack { public Song Song; public string Extra; } } We've added a Content Pipeline extension: // Project GameTrackProcessor namespace GameTrackProcessor { [ContentSerializerRuntimeType("AudioGameLibrary.GameTrack, AudioGameLibrary")] public class GameTrackContent { public SongContent SongContent; public string Extra; } [ContentProcessor(DisplayName = "GameTrack Processor")] public class GameTrackProcessor : ContentProcessor<AudioContent, GameTrackContent> { public GameTrackProcessor(){} public override GameTrackContent Process(AudioContent input, ContentProcessorContext context) { return new GameTrackContent() { SongContent = new SongProcessor().Process(input, context), Extra = "Some extra data" // Here we can do our processing on 'input' }; } } } Both the Library and the Pipeline extension are added to the Game Solution and references are also added. When trying to use this extension to load "gametrack.mp3" we run into problems however: // Project AudioGame protected override void LoadContent() { AudioGameLibrary.GameTrack gameTrack = Content.Load<AudioGameLibrary.GameTrack>("gametrack"); MediaPlayer.Play(gameTrack.Song); } The error message: Error loading "gametrack". File contains Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Media.Song but trying to load as AudioGameLibrary.GameTrack. AudioGame contains references to both AudioGameLibrary and GameTrackProcessor. Are we maybe missing other references? EDIT Selecting the correct content processor helped, it loads the audio file correctly. However, when I try to process some data, e.g: public override GameTrackContent Process(AudioContent input, ContentProcessorContext context) { int count = input.Data.Count; // With this commented out it works fine return new GameTrackContent() { SongContent = new SongProcessor().Process(input, context) }; } It crashes with the following error: Managed Debugging Assistant 'PInvokeStackImbalance' has detected a problem in 'C:\Users\Maarten\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\AudioGame\DebugPipeline\bin\Debug\DebugPipeline.exe'. Additional Information: A call to PInvoke function 'Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content.Pipeline!Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content.Pipeline.UnsafeNativeMethods+AudioHelper::OpenAudioFile' has unbalanced the stack. • Fast programmatic compare of "timetable" data

    - by Brendan Green
    Consider train timetable data, where each service (or "run") has a data structure as such: public class TimeTable { public int Id {get;set;} public List<Run> Runs {get;set;} } public class Run { public List<Stop> Stops {get;set;} public int RunId {get;set;} } public class Stop { public int StationId {get;set;} public TimeSpan? StopTime {get;set;} public bool IsStop {get;set;} } We have a list of runs that operate against a particular line (the TimeTable class). Further, whilst we have a set collection of stations that are on a line, not all runs stop at all stations (that is, IsStop would be false, and StopTime would be null). Now, imagine that we have received the initial timetable, processed it, and loaded it into the above data structure. Once the initial load is complete, it is persisted into a database - the data structure is used only to load the timetable from its source and to persist it to the database. We are now receiving an updated timetable. The updated timetable may or may not have any changes to it - we don't know and are not told whether any changes are present. What I would like to do is perform a compare for each run in an efficient manner. I don't want to simply replace each run. Instead, I want to have a background task that runs periodically that downloads the updated timetable dataset, and then compares it to the current timetable. If differences are found, some action (not relevant to the question) will take place. I was initially thinking of some sort of checksum process, where I could, for example, load both runs (that is, the one from the new timetable received and the one that has been persisted to the database) into the data structure and then add up all the hour components of the StopTime, and all the minute components of the StopTime and compare the results (i.e. both the sum of Hours and sum of Minutes would be the same, and differences introduced if a stop time is changed, a stop deleted or a new stop added). Would that be a valid way to check for differences, or is there a better way to approach this problem? I can see a problem that, for example, one stop is changed to be 2 minutes earlier, and another changed to be 2 minutes later would have a net zero change. Or am I over thinking this, and would it just be simpler to brute check all stops to ensure that The updated run stops at the same stations; and Each stop is at the same time

  • Navigating Libgdx Menu with arrow keys or controller

    - by Phil Royer
    I'm attempting to make my menu navigable with the arrow keys or via the d-pad on a controller. So Far I've had no luck. The question is: Can someone walk me through how to make my current menu or any libgdx menu keyboard accessible? I'm a bit noobish with some stuff and I come from a Javascript background. Here's an example of what I'm trying to do: http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39448/webgl/qb/qb.html For a simple menu that you can just add a few buttons to and it run out of the box use this: http://www.sadafnoor.com/blog/how-to-create-simple-menu-in-libgdx/ Or you can use my code but I use a lot of custom styles. And here's an example of my code: import aurelienribon.tweenengine.Timeline; import aurelienribon.tweenengine.Tween; import aurelienribon.tweenengine.TweenManager; import com.badlogic.gdx.Game; import com.badlogic.gdx.Gdx; • Refactoring FizzBuzz

    - by MarkPearl
    A few years ago I blogger about FizzBuzz, at the time the post was prompted by Scott Hanselman who had podcasted about how surprized he was that some programmers could not even solve the FizzBuzz problem within a reasonable period of time during a job interview. At the time I thought I would give the problem a go in F# and sure enough the solution was fairly simple – I then also did a basic solution in C# but never posted it. Since then I have learned that being able to solve a problem and how you solve the problem are two totally different things. Today I decided to give the problem a retry and see if I had learnt anything new in the last year or so. Here is how my solution looked after refactoring… Solution 1 – Cheap and Nasty public class FizzBuzzCalculator { public string NumberFormat(int number) { var numDivisibleBy3 = (number % 3) == 0; var numDivisibleBy5 = (number % 5) == 0; if (numDivisibleBy3 && numDivisibleBy5) return String.Format("{0} FizzBuz", number); else if (numDivisibleBy3) return String.Format("{0} Fizz", number); else if (numDivisibleBy5) return String.Format("{0} Buz", number); return number.ToString(); } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var fizzBuzz = new FizzBuzzCalculator(); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { Console.WriteLine(fizzBuzz.NumberFormat(i)); } } } My first attempt I just looked at solving the problem – it works, and could be an acceptable solution but tonight I thought I would see how far  I could refactor it… The section I decided to focus on was the mass of if..else code in the NumberFormat method. Solution 2 – Replacing If…Else with a Dictionary public class FizzBuzzCalculator { private readonly Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> _mappings; public FizzBuzzCalculator(Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> mappings) { _mappings = mappings; } public string NumberFormat(int number) { var numDivisibleBy3 = (number % 3) == 0; var numDivisibleBy5 = (number % 5) == 0; var mappedKey = new Tuple<bool, bool>(numDivisibleBy3, numDivisibleBy5); return String.Format("{0} {1}", number, _mappings[mappedKey]); } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var mappings = new Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> { { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, true), "- FizzBuzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, false), "- Fizz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, true), "- Buzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, false), ""} }; var fizzBuzz = new FizzBuzzCalculator(mappings); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { Console.WriteLine(fizzBuzz.NumberFormat(i)); } Console.ReadLine(); } } In my second attempt I looked at removing the if else in the NumberFormat method. A dictionary proved to be useful for this – I added a constructor to the class and injected the dictionary mapping. One could argue that this is totally overkill, but if I was going to use this code in a large system an approach like this makes it easy to put this data in a configuration file, which would up its OC (Open for extensibility, closed for modification principle). I could of course take the OC principle even further – the check for divisibility by 3 and 5 is tightly coupled to this class. If I wanted to make it 4 instead of 3, I would need to adjust this class. This introduces my third refactoring. Solution 3 – Introducing Delegates and Injecting them into the class public delegate bool FizzBuzzComparison(int number); public class FizzBuzzCalculator { private readonly Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> _mappings; private readonly FizzBuzzComparison _comparison1; private readonly FizzBuzzComparison _comparison2; public FizzBuzzCalculator(Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> mappings, FizzBuzzComparison comparison1, FizzBuzzComparison comparison2) { _mappings = mappings; _comparison1 = comparison1; _comparison2 = comparison2; } public string NumberFormat(int number) { var mappedKey = new Tuple<bool, bool>(_comparison1(number), _comparison2(number)); return String.Format("{0} {1}", number, _mappings[mappedKey]); } } class Program { private static bool DivisibleByNum(int number, int divisor) { return number % divisor == 0; } public static bool Divisibleby3(int number) { return number % 3 == 0; } public static bool Divisibleby5(int number) { return number % 5 == 0; } static void Main(string[] args) { var mappings = new Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> { { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, true), "- FizzBuzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, false), "- Fizz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, true), "- Buzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, false), ""} }; var fizzBuzz = new FizzBuzzCalculator(mappings, Divisibleby3, Divisibleby5); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { Console.WriteLine(fizzBuzz.NumberFormat(i)); } Console.ReadLine(); } } I have taken this one step further and introduced delegates that are injected into the FizzBuzz Calculator class, from an OC principle perspective it has probably made it more compliant than the previous Solution 2, but there seems to be a lot of noise. Anonymous Delegates increase the readability level, which is what I have done in Solution 4. Solution 4 – Anon Delegates public delegate bool FizzBuzzComparison(int number); public class FizzBuzzCalculator { private readonly Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> _mappings; private readonly FizzBuzzComparison _comparison1; private readonly FizzBuzzComparison _comparison2; public FizzBuzzCalculator(Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> mappings, FizzBuzzComparison comparison1, FizzBuzzComparison comparison2) { _mappings = mappings; _comparison1 = comparison1; _comparison2 = comparison2; } public string NumberFormat(int number) { var mappedKey = new Tuple<bool, bool>(_comparison1(number), _comparison2(number)); return String.Format("{0} {1}", number, _mappings[mappedKey]); } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var mappings = new Dictionary<Tuple<bool, bool>, string> { { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, true), "- FizzBuzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(true, false), "- Fizz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, true), "- Buzz"}, { new Tuple<bool, bool>(false, false), ""} }; var fizzBuzz = new FizzBuzzCalculator(mappings, (n) => n % 3 == 0, (n) => n % 5 == 0); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { Console.WriteLine(fizzBuzz.NumberFormat(i)); } Console.ReadLine(); } }   Using the anonymous delegates I think the noise level has now been reduced. This is where I am going to end this post, I have gone through 4 iterations of the code from the initial solution using If..Else to delegates and dictionaries. I think each approach would have it’s pro’s and con’s and depending on the intention of where the code would be used would be a large determining factor. If you can think of an alternative way to do FizzBuzz, add a comment!

  • Why does my int, booleans, doubles does not work?

    - by SystemNetworks
    As you see, my code does not work. When armor1 is true, it would add my life. goldA is another class. public void goldenArmor(GameContainer gc, StateBasedGame sbg, Graphics g) { if(armor1==true) { goldA.life = life; goldA.intelligence = intelligence; goldA.power = power; goldA.lifeLeft = lifeLeft; goldA.head(); goldA.body(); goldA.legs(); } } My other class: package javagame; import org.newdawn.slick.GameContainer; import org.newdawn.slick.Graphics; import org.newdawn.slick.Image; import org.newdawn.slick.Input; import org.newdawn.slick.SlickException; /* Note: Copyright(C)2012 System Networks | Square NET | Julius Bryan Gambe. You cannot copy the style, story of the game and gameplay! To programmers: The int,doubles,strings,booleans are properly sorted out. Please don't mess it up. */ /* NOTE: We have loops but not for programming. The loop is: 1.show the world to user 2.Obtain input from the user 3.Shows the update, repeat step 1 */ import org.newdawn.slick.*; import org.newdawn.slick.state.*; import org.lwjgl.input.Mouse; //contents: // public class GoldenArmor{ //get it from play public int life; public double intelligence; public int lifeLeft; public double power; public GoldenArmor() { // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub } //start here public void head() { life += 10; intelligence +=0.5; } public void body() { lifeLeft += 100; } public void legs() { power += 100; } } /* SYSTEM NETWORKS(C) 2012 NET FRONT */ The life, intelligence, power, lifeLeft are nothing but to use it as just reference to prevent stack overflow. And at my main class, it becomes my real booleans, int, doubles. How do I fix this? It does not add it to my normal int.

  • How can I make a universal construction more efficient?

    - by VF1
    A "universal construction" is a wrapper class for a sequential object that enables it to be linearized (a strong consistency condition for concurrent objects). For instance, here's an adapted wait-free construction, in Java, from [1], which presumes the existence of a wait-free queue that satisfies the interface WFQ (which only requires one-time consensus between threads) and assumes a Sequential interface: public interface WFQ<T> // "FIFO" iteration { int enqueue(T t); // returns the sequence number of t Iterable<T> iterateUntil(int max); // iterates until sequence max } public interface Sequential { // Apply an invocation (method + arguments) // and get a response (return value + state) Response apply(Invocation i); } public interface Factory<T> { T generate(); } // generate new default object public interface Universal extends Sequential {} public class SlowUniversal implements Universal { Factory<? extends Sequential> generator; WFQ<Invocation> wfq = new WFQ<Invocation>(); Universal(Factory<? extends Sequential> g) { generator = g; } public Response apply(Invocation i) { int max = wfq.enqueue(i); Sequential s = generator.generate(); for(Invocation invoc : wfq.iterateUntil(max)) s.apply(invoc); return s.apply(i); } } This implementation isn't very satisfying, however, since it presumes determinism of a Sequential and is really slow. I attempted to add memory recycling: public interface WFQD<T> extends WFQ<T> { T dequeue(int n); } // dequeues only when n is the tail, else assists other threads public interface CopyableSequential extends Sequential { CopyableSequential copy(); } public class RecyclingUniversal implements Universal { WFQD<CopyableSequential> wfqd = new WFQD<CopyableSequential>(); Universal(CopyableSequential init) { wfqd.enqueue(init); } public Response apply(Invocation i) { int max = wfqd.enqueue(i); CopyableSequential cs = null; int ctr = max; for(CopyableSequential csq : wfq.iterateUntil(max)) if(--max == 0) cs = csq.copy(); wfqd.dequeue(max); return cs.apply(i); } } Here are my specific questions regarding the extension: Does my implementation create a linearizable multi-threaded version of a CopyableSequential? Is it possible extend memory recycling without extending the interface (perhaps my new methods trivialize the problem)? My implementation only reduces memory when a thread returns, so can this be strengthened? [1] provided an implementation for WFQ<T>, not WFQD<T> - one does exist, though, correct? • My image is not showing in java, using ImageIcon

    - by user1048606
    I'd like to know why my images are now showing up when I use ImageIcon and when I have specified the directory the image is in. All I get is a black blank screen with nothing else on it. import java.awt.Image; import java.awt.event.KeyEvent; import javax.swing.ImageIcon; import java.awt.Image; import java.awt.event.KeyEvent; import java.util.ArrayList; import javax.swing.ImageIcon; // Class for handling key input public class Craft { private int dx; private int dy; private int x; private int y; private Image image; private Image image2; private ArrayList missiles; private final int CRAFT_SIZE = 20; private String craft = "C:\\Users\\Jimmy\\Desktop\\Jimmy's Folder\\programs\\craft.png"; public Craft() { ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(craft); image2 = ii.getImage(); missiles = new ArrayList(); x = 40; y = 60; } public void move() { x += dx; y += dy; } public int getX() { return x; } public int getY() { return y; } public Image getImage() { return image; } public ArrayList getMissiles() { return missiles; } public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { int key = e.getKeyCode(); // Shooting key if (key == KeyEvent.VK_SPACE) { fire(); } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_LEFT) { dx = -1; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_RIGHT) { dx = 1; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_UP) { dy = -1; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) { dy = 1; } } // Handles the missile object firing out of the ship public void fire() { missiles.add(new Missile(x + CRAFT_SIZE, y + CRAFT_SIZE/2)); } public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e) { int key = e.getKeyCode(); if (key == KeyEvent.VK_LEFT) { dx = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_RIGHT) { dx = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_UP) { dy = 0; } if (key == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) { dy = 0; } } }

  • How to apply effects that occur (or change) over time to characters in a game?

    - by Joshua Harris
    So assume that I have a system that applies Effects to Characters like so: public class Character { private Collection<Effect> _effects; public void AddEffect (Effect e) { e.ApplyTo(this); _effects.Add(e); } public void RemoveEffect (Effect e) { e.RemoveFrom(this); _effects.Remove(e); } } public interface Effect { public void ApplyTo (Character character); public void RemoveFrom (Character character); } Example Effect: Armor Buff for 5 seconds. void someFunction() { // Do Stuff ... Timer armorTimer = new Timer(5 seconds); ArmorBuff armorbuff = new ArmorBuff(); character.AddEffect(armorBuff); armorTimer.Start(); // Do more stuff ... } // Some where else in code public void ArmorTimer_Complete() { character.RemoveEffect(armorBuff); } public class ArmorBuff implements Effect { public void applyTo(Character character) { character.changeArmor(20); } public void removeFrom(Character character) { character.changeArmor(-20); } } Ok, so this example would buff the Characters armor for 5 seconds. Easy to get working. But what about effects that change over the duration of the effect being applied. Two examples come to mind: Damage Over Time: 200 damage every second for 3 seconds. I could mimic this by applying an Effect that lasts for 1 second and has a counter set to 3, then when it is removed it could deal 200 damage, clone itself, decrement the counter of the clone, and apply the clone to the character. If it repeats this until the counter is 0, then you got a damage over time ability. I'm not a huge fan of this approach, but it does describe the behavior exactly. Degenerating Speed Boost: Gain a speed boost that degrades over 3 seconds until you return to your normal speed. This is a bit harder. I can basically do the same thing as above except having timers set to some portion of a second, such that they occur fast enough to give the appearance of degenerating smoothly over time (even though they are really just stepping down incrementally). I feel like you could get away with only 12 steps over a second (maybe less, I would have to test it and see), but this doesn't seem very elegant to me. The only other way to implement this effect would be to change the system so that the Character checks the _effects collection for effects that alter any of the properties any time that they are being used. I could handle this in functions like getCurrentSpeed() and getCurrentArmor(), but you can imagine how much of a hassle it would be to have that kind of overhead every time you want to do a calculation with movement speed (which would be every time you move your character). Is there a better way to deal with these kinds of effects or events?
