• Get info from multiple files, match it and then display to end user, what is fastest?

  Hi, I need to build a website where we display data that is refreshed every 5minutes in a text file with a | separator. I currently use Java to do this. What I do now: I grab the textfile for every request through the website and process it and then display the data to the end user, this works fine, since Java can go through like 5000 lines of data fast, and when I filter it it is still extremely fast. However now the management wants the following: They added 3 textfiles with the | separator to it, and now want me to also read those files and match the information on certain fields, and if there is a match also display that information to the end user. I think soon enough, although Java is fast, I will run into trouble when 10 people want that information and I have to run through 4 total files matching the information. What can I do to make this process super fast? My Creative solutions so far: -Leave it this way, since Java is fast and end users can wait (probably less then 1second) -Have a background process that dumps new data into a MySQL database every 5minutes, since databases are extremely good at getting the same data from multiple tables. • How do software events work internally?

  Hello! I am a student of Computer Science and have learned many of the basic concepts of what is going on "under the hood" while a computer program is running. But recently I realized that I do not understand how software events work efficiently. In hardware, this is easy: instead of the processor "busy waiting" to see if something happened, the component sends an interrupt request. But how does this work in, for example, a mouse-over event? My guess is as follows: if the mouse sends a signal ("moved"), the operating system calculates its new position p, then checks what program is being drawn on the screen, tells that program position p, then the program itself checks what object is at p, checks if any event handlers are associated with said object and finally fires them. That sounds terribly inefficient to me, since a tiny mouse movement equates to a lot of cpu context switches (which I learned are relatively expensive). And then there are dozens of background applications that may want to do stuff of their own as well. Where is my intuition failing me? I realize that even "slow" 500MHz processors do 500 million operations per second, but still it seems too much work for such a simple event. Thanks in advance!

• Choosing approach for an IM client-server app

  Update: totally re-wrote this to be more succint. I'm looking at a new application, one part of which will be very similar to standard IM clients, i.e text chat, ability to send attachments, maybe some real-time interaction like a multi-user whiteboard. It will be client-server, i.e all traffic goes through my central server. That means if I want to support cross-communication with other IM systems, I am still free to pick any protocol for my own client<--server communication - my server can use XMPP or whatever to talk to other systems. Clients are expected to include desktop apps, but probably also browser-based as well either through Flex/Silverlight or HTML/AJAX. I see 3 options for my own client-server communication layer: XMPP. The benefits are clients already exist as do open-source servers. However it requires the most up-front research/learning and also appears like it might raise legal issues due to GPL. Custom sockets. A server app makes connections with the clients, allowing any text/binary data to be sent very fast. However this approach requires building said server from scratch, and also makes a JS client tricky Servlets (or similar web server). Using tried and tested Java web-stack, clients send HTTP requests similar to AJAX-based websites. The benefit is the server is easy to write using well-established technologies, and easy to talk to. But what restrictions would this bring? Is it appropriate technology for real-time communication? Advice and suggests are welcome, especially what pros and cons surround using a web-server approach as compared to a socket-based approach.

• Is there an efficient algorithm to distribute resources in a way that both avoids conflict and allows bias?

  Background (Skip this if you only care about the algorithm) At the university where I work, one of the biggest hassles in our department is classroom scheduling. For illustration purposes and to lay out the scope of the problem, here's how we do scheduling now: Professors give us a list of the classes they're teaching with the time slots they'd prefer to teach, ranked in order of priority (most desired to least desired). Administration gives us a list of the rooms we may assign along with the times those rooms are available for our department's use. We start assigning professors to rooms trying (at first) to take into account the preferences of the various professors. Inevitably, conflicts arise, professors start asking for changes, and the plan falls to pieces somewhere around professor number 30, at which point we start assigning rooms basically wherever we can fit them in, crumpled pieces of paper are everywhere, and nobody's happy. (If you've ever wondered why your class was at 9.30 in the morning on Thursday but 4 pm every other day, now you know) I have been asked to quietly investigate whether software could do this more optimally. The Actual Question Is there an algorithm to efficiently schedule a set of resources such that the following criteria are met: The algorithm must never assign two professors to the same room at the same time. The task is not complete until every professor has been assigned a room / time. The algorithm need not worry about having too many professors for the amount of time slots available. (We're not that well funded.) As much as is possible the algorithm should respect the scheduling preferences of the individual professors. I feel like I can't be the first one to ask this. Is there a efficient algorithm for this, or is this the sort of problem that can only be brute-forced?

• C# Sql Connection Best Practises 2013

  With the new year approaching I'm drawing up a development plan for 2013. I won't bore you with the details but I started thinking about whether the way I do things is actually the 'correct' way. In particular how I'm interfacing with SQL. I create predominantly create WPF desktop applications and often some Silverlight Web Applications. All of my programs are very Data-Centric. When connecting to SQL from WPF I tend to use Stored Procedures stored on the server and fetch them using ADO.NET (e.g. SQLConnection(), .ExecuteQuery()). However with Silverlight I have a WCF service and use LINQ to SQL (and I'm using LINQ much more in WPF). My question is really is am I doing anything wrong in a sense that it's a little old fashioned? I've tried to look this up online but could find anything useful after about 2010 and of those half were 'LINQ is dead!' and the other 'Always use LINQ' Just want to make sure going forward I'm doing the right things the right way, or at least the advised way :). What principles are you using when connecting to SQL? Is it the same for WPF and Silverlight/WCF?

• long startup time...Need help

  My app is all done and working great. So now I ran it on a old iPhone and the app takes 17.3 seconds to start!?!? i spent a lot of time looking into it and i found that the reason it is taking so long to load is i have a lot of views and each view has a png background image. All the png's from all the views are about 12mb. There is no need for the app to load all the views at the same time during startup. Is there a way i can only load the first "home" view at startup? (All the views are part of the same nib.)

• finding long repeated substrings in a massive string

  I naively imagined that I could build a suffix trie where I keep a visit-count for each node, and then the deepest nodes with counts greater than one are the result set I'm looking for. I have a really really long string (hundreds of megabytes). I have about 1 GB of RAM. This is why building a suffix trie with counting data is too inefficient space-wise to work for me. To quote Wikipedia's Suffix tree: storing a string's suffix tree typically requires significantly more space than storing the string itself. The large amount of information in each edge and node makes the suffix tree very expensive, consuming about ten to twenty times the memory size of the source text in good implementations. The suffix array reduces this requirement to a factor of four, and researchers have continued to find smaller indexing structures. And that was wikipedia's comments on the tree, not trie. How can I find long repeated sequences in such a large amount of data, and in a reasonable amount of time (e.g. less than an hour on a modern desktop machine)? • Google Drive API invalid_grant after removing access

  I have been writing a desktop application that uses the Google Drive API v2. Everything worked successfully until I realized I was using the wrong Google account. At that point I logged into the wrong Google account and revoked access to my App. Now, whenever I run the same code it throws an exception: Error:"invalid_grant", Description:"", Uri:"" When I examine the service and request objects, it looks like the oauth_token isn't getting created any more. I know what I did to mess things up, but I can't figure out how to correct it so I can use a different Google account for testing. What do I need to do?

  I'm using Page Control example from Apple. I want to be able to scroll horizontally to certain page and get the sound automatically play when viewing that page? And then sound stop when viewing the other page? So, for example. On page 1, i have some texts. When i go to the next page which is on page 2, i want sound to be automatically play and stop when i go to page 3. I'm planning to use If statements (since it's not that many pages) to determine which page will get the sound. My question is simple. How do you get the sound play automatically when viewing certain page? By the way, I'm planning to use System Sound. I know how to play the sound using button. But how do you get it automatically - start when certain page appear and stop when moving to the next page. Thank you in advance! • How to run stored procedures and ad-hoc scripts asynchronously with "loosely" connected SQL Server 2

  Is there a way to initiate a script against an instance of SQL server when it is not connected then have it run on the instance the next time it connects? This needs to happen without any intervention from me. Background situation if you are interested: We have about 120 machines each with their own instance of SQL Server 2000. Most of them are laptops. We have merge replication set up with each one. From time to time, there is a need to delete "rogue" guids from some tables in some instances that overwrite legitimate records on the main publisher as well as perform administrative tasks via stored procedure or adhoc sql statements. The problem is there is no telling when each machine is going to be connected to the network. Some folks turn their machines completely off at the end of the day. Others disconnect their machines and take them on business trips, home for the weekend etc. Did I mention that about 35 of these machines are in utility trucks and "attempt" to sync over a wireless connection.   I'm making a site for European client and he said Firefox 3 and IE 7 and 8 has more user than others browser for desktop in Europe http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-eu-monthly-200812-201001-bar I've only IE 7 and Firefox 3.5.7 installed in my PC. Should I download portable Firefox 3.0 and test in it too even if I'm not using any new css property/selector which only has support in Firefox 3.5 or testing in 3.5.7 would be enough? And for IE testing in IE 7 would be enough or should i check my site in IE8 (downloading VPC image of IE8 and testing in VM) even if I'm not using any new css property/selector which only has support in IE8? Or is it necessary to use <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" /> in <head> ? But what will happen when user will switch compatibility mode to IE 8 default rendering mode? Can we make site compatible in IE 7 and 8 both without using <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />? If yes, then what special we need to do.care/consider in css to make site identical in both?

• Audio Streaming Latency

  I'm writing a UDP local area network video chat system and have got the video and audio streams working. However I'm experiencing a little latency (about half a second) in the audio and was wondering what codecs would provide the least latency. I'm using NAudio (http://naudio.codeplex.com/) which provides me access to the following codecs for streaming; Speex Narrow Band (VBR) Speex Wide Band (16kHz)(VBR) Speex Ultra Wide Band (32kHz)(VBR) DSP Group TrueSpeech (8.5kbps) GSM 6.10 (13kbps) Microsoft ADPCM (32.8kbps) G.711 a-law (64kbps) G.722 16kHz (64kbps) G.711 mu-law (64kbps) PCM 8kHz 16 bit uncompressed (128kbps) I've tried them out and I'm not noticing much difference. Is there any others that I should download and try to reduce latency? I'm only going to be sending voice over the connection but I'm not really worried about quality or background noises too much. • Applied style in WPF ignores properties.

  Here's the conundrum. In two different places in my application, I use a border with the exact same appearance. In an never-ending fight against code bloat and unmanageable code, I want to define the border's appearance in a style to use when I create the border. Strangely, several of the properties I set are being ignored. Here's the code I use to create the style. Simple enough. Style borderStyle = new Style(typeof(Border)); borderStyle.Setters.Add(new Setter(Border.BorderBrushProperty, Brushes.Black)); borderStyle.Setters.Add(new Setter(Border.BorderThicknessProperty, new Thickness(4))); borderStyle.Setters.Add(new Setter(Border.OpacityProperty, 1.0)); return borderStyle; But when I set the style, the opacity property is left at its original value of 0.7. I have also tried setting the background of the border to a brush I created. It too is ignored. Thanks for any insights you may have.

• What could the negative effects be of attaching to a process as a debugger?

  Background A client of mine has a major problem. They have a CRM system, which was created by a single person over a period of 9 years. Unfortunatelly, a few weeks ago, this person died. I believe the company has learned their lesson, and they have started a project of rewriting the CRM system to a modern platform. I have been hired to create a solution in the meantime to make adaptations to the CRM system. I have given up understanding the code, as this would take too long. My solution, is therefore, to make a window and show this on top of the CRM system, whenever this CRM system is showing. This part works fine, but my major problem is extracting the data from the CRM system. Proposed solution After excluding 6 approaches, including runtime code injection, memory searching, database integration, I have arrived at attaching to the process as a debugger, so I get notified about event, and use this in combination with reading from process memory. This approach seems to work, but I am worried about possible side-effects of this approach. Question What are the dangers of using this in a production environment, where there are 250 employees utilizing the system. Needless to say, I cannot risk reducing the already shaky stability of the system.

• Ruby, Python, or PHP?

  And so we return to the age old question - but with a few twists. This morning, I searched and read up on which web development language to learn first. I'm thinking Ruby, Python, or perhaps PHP. But I have a few questions before deciding. Background: I'm a year into C++ (through school), but want to get into web development. I have all summer to commit to one language, learn it, do some projects, get up some websites, and so on. Now my questions (and these are assuming that I should choose between Ruby, Python, and PHP - if I should choose a different language, let me know.): I hope to use whichever language I learn for websites/web apps. Some of the threads on stackoverflow suggested Python was the best overall language, but others were unanimous that Ruby was best specifically for web development. For a first language suited towards web development, which language do you recommend, and why? This might tie into the first question, but which language looks most promising for future work, future personal projects, and basically the future in general? I'm just a freshman in college. Ideally, the language I choose would be on the rise, community-wise and opportunity-wise. (One reason I'm leaning towards Ruby is that it seems a lot of the newer tech startups/successes are using it.)

  Good Morning, I am trying to find a programmer to code a piece of custom software for my business. I plan on using this software to manage my business, and possibly sell it to other companies (in the same industry) at a later date. I've never hired a programmer before, so I'm not sure what to expect or where to begin. I know exactly what features I need, and how I want it laid out, I just need someone who can take my ideas and make it happen. This software will be used to manage customer information, and keep track of orders. What I think I need: * SQL Server or similar database that will be located at our office. * Desktop Application, that connects via LAN to the database server (cannot be browser based) * Multiple User Support (Simultaneous users accesing the system) * Needs to be scalable (currently we have 5 employees, but who knows what the future will bring) * Multi-Platform Support (Windows, Linux) I posted a job offer through elance, which seems to raise more questions than answers. How do I decide what language(s) will work best for my situation? (I have received offers for C#, Eclipse, .NET, Powerbuilder, etc. - I want to make sure that I choose the best one now, so I don't run into problems later) Does the programmer hold any rights to the software? • PC to Macbook Pro Transition - Getting (re)started?

  I'm in my second computer science course right now. I've enjoyed programming so far, but really have just scraped my way by. I've not done much programming outside of required class work. For similar reasons, I never really invested in downloading/learning software to help me program (IDE's, editors, compilers, etc). I know it sounds tedious, but my current setup is: notepad++ for coding; Filezilla to transfer .cpp & .h files to school's aludra/unix and compiling; unix tells me where my bugs are and I go back to notepad++ to debug; repeat until done. This isn't fun - and I know it could be easier. But I put it off knowing that I was soon going to switch to a Mac. And, tomorrow, I'm switching. So... How should I set up my Macbook for the best programming experience? What IDEs and editors and debuggers and so on should I download? How will Mac programming differ from PC? I'm open to all ideas and comments, even the most basic. (Background - I'm learning/programming in C++ right now. Next semester, my classes switch to Java. I'm also going to take a class in web development, with HTML/CSS/Javascript/PHP. My new laptop will be a late 2009 Macbook Pro with Leopard, or maybe Snow Leopard. Free would be preferrable for all programs.) Thank you all.

• How do you use a view with arguments as the site front page in Drupal?

  I have a Drupal site and I have setup a view to power the front page. My goal is to be able to pass 0-2 arguments to the home page, that get passed into the view. However, I still need the normal Drupal pages to work. The list of arguments is known. For example: mysite.com/berlin/birds would pass in "berlin" as the first argument and "birds" as the second argument to the view that powers the front page. mysite.com/berlin would just pass in one argument, "berlin" mysite.com/admin would load the normal admin pages in Drupal I'm not clear on how to achieve this. Is there a hook I can use? I can't find one or think of one. Is there a way to specify this in the argument for the view itself? Perhaps I can write a hook that interjects when the URL is being loaded, and rewrite in the background? The solution I currently have is to add these paths (since my arguments are known) to the menu system. This works, except that when I the pages they aren't the front page, so the pages don't use the node themes I want (they use the node details theme).

• Android designing an app to keep me logged into a wifi access point

  At the gym where I work out, they have an open wifi access point. The way it is set up, once you "connect", you have to navigate to a web page (it is a 1.1.X.X ip address) and click the "I agree" button, after presumably reading the user agreement. The problem is, they have it set up to log you out once an hour, which always happens in the middle of my workout. I have the SSID remembered, so it connects automatically when I come in range, but I get an android notification that further action is needed to fully connect. What I was wondering is if there a work around so that I don't have to click-through every hour? I was thinking of writing an app that could detect when I was in range, or when "half-connected", and then have it somehow complete the registration process. Perhaps this will have to be done by loading the web page in memory and then somehow clicking the "I agree" button. What I would like help with is: 1) what is the terminology involved here? What state is the connection in when I am connected, but I haven't clicked through? What other connection states may apply? If I knew that, I might just be able to research this and come up with a solution. Are these different states "detectable"? It seems like it is since I get a notification that I need to complete the registration process when I am "half-connected". 2) I know there are plugins for desktop browsers that can click buttons (like the keepass plugins, which will log you into a site). How could I replicate this in Android? Ideally I would like to do it internally, in memory, rather than firing up a browser. Possible? Comments? Is my understanding and thought process sound here, or am I overlooking something?

• Using "margin: 0 auto;" in Internet Explorer 8

  I'm in the process of doing some advance IE8 testing, and it seems that the old technique of using "margin: 0 auto;" doesn't work in all cases in IE8. The following piece of HTML gives a centered button in FF3, Opera, Safari, Chrome, IE7, and IE8 compat, but NOT in IE8 standard: <div style="height: 500px; width: 500px; background-color: Yellow;"> <input type="submit" style="display: block; margin: 0 auto;" /> </div> (As a work-around I can add an explicit width to the button). So the question is: which browsers are correct? Or is this one of those cases where the behaviour is undefined? (My thinking is that all the browsers are incorrect - shouldn't the button be 100% width if it's "display: block"?) UPDATE: I'm being a dunce. Since input isn't a block-level element, I should have just contained it within a div with "text-align: center". Having said that, for curiosity's sake, I'd still like to know whether the button should or shouldn't be centered in the example above. FOR THE BOUNTY: I know I'm doing odd things in the example, and as I point out in the update, I should have just aligned it center. For the bounty, I'd like references to the specs that answer: If I set "display: block", should the button be width 100%? Or is this undefined? Since the display is block, should "margin: 0 auto;" center the button, or not, or undefined?
