  • Implementing a FSM with ActionScript 2 without using classes?

    - by Up2u
    I have seen several references of A.I. and FSM, but sadly I still can't understand the point of an FSM in AS2.0. Is it a must to create a class for each state? I have a game-project which also it has an A.I., the A.I. has 3 states: distanceCheck, ChaseTarget, and Hit the target. It's an FPS game and played via mouse. I have created the A.I. successfully, but I want to convert it to FSM method... My first state is CheckDistanceState() and in that function I look for the nearest target and trigger the function ChaseState(), there I insert the Hit() function to destroy the enemy, The 3 functions that I created are being called in AI_cursor.onEnterframe. Is there any chance to implement an FSM without the need to create a class? From what I've read before, you have to create a class. I prefer to write the code on frames in flash and I still don't understand how to have external classes.

    Dear all, I need to obtain a string from HTML and put it into Actionscript. the actionscript: import flash.external.ExternalInterface; protected function getUserName():void{ var isAvailable:Boolean = ExternalInterface.available; var findUserName:String = "findUserName"; if(isAvailable){ var foundUserName:String = ExternalInterface.call(findUserName); Alert.show(foundUserName);}} the javascript: function findUserName() { var label = document.getElementById("username-label"); if(label.value != ""){ alert("the name in the box is: " + label.value); return label.value;} else return "nothing in the textbox";}} the JSP: <%IUserSession userSession = SessionManager.getSession();%> <logic:notEmpty name="userSession"> <logic:notEqual value="anonymous" name="userSession" property="userLoginId"> <td align="right" width="10%" > <input id="username-label" type="text" value="<bean:write name="userSession" property="userLoginId"/>" /> </td> </logic:notEqual> </logic:notEmpty> the rendered HTML: <td align="right" width="10%"> <input id="username-label" type="text" value="a-valid-username" /> </td> when the javascript execution hits var label = document.getElementById("username-label"); a null is returned and crashes, no alert shows no error message is shown. firfox 3.5 windows, container is Tomcat. Please advise, and thank you in advance.

  • Is it possible to create a flash movie from only actionscript?

    - by Metropolis
    Hey Everyone, Currently I am mostly a PHP/Javascript/CSS/HTML applications programmer. But I would like to start learning how to create flash movies also. However, I do not want to spend the money to get CS4. Can I create flash movies from only Actionscript 3? Or would anyone recommend that I jump straight to air? All of the different adobe products, which do the same thing, confuse me. I just do not want to jump into it and then find out that I have to spend 900 dollars for the IDE. I really just want to code, and not have to use the IDE. Thanks, Metropolis

  • Flex: Why does setting scaleX/Y in mxml effect the components size but setting it in actionscript do

    - by ChrisInCambo
    Hi, I'm playing around with the scaleX/Y in the canvas tag and have noticed some strange behaviour. When I set scale in in mxml the width and height of the canvas are adjusted accordingly. For example if I have a canvas like this: <mx:Canvas width="1000" height="1000" scaleX="0.1" scaleY="0.1" /> The canvas now appears on screen to have a width and height of 100 and if inside my creationComplete callback I check the width and height property they are indeed 100. But if I do exactly the same thing except I set the scaleX/Y property from actionscript the canvas on screen appears to have a width and height of 100 as expected, but when I check the width and height property of the canvas they are still at the previous values of 1000. Could anyone help me understand what is going on and also tell me if there is any method that will refresh the width and height values so that they are correct? Thanks, Chris

  • Retrieving/simulating run-time "layer" functionality in Flash under ActionScript 3.

    - by Triynko
    Are there any AS3 classes to help arrange objects into layers, like in the designer, such that the objects all have the same parent? Obviously, I can use container clips to simulate layers, but I specifically want this kind of functionality for objects that have the same parent. My understanding is that the design-time notion of layers does not exist at run-time, and objects just have a depth index. I'm creating a class to simulate layering functionality with a single parent, but if one already exists, I'd like to check it out. On a side note... how do design-time layer masks manifest themselves at runtime in AS3? I thought maybe all objects on the masked layer share the same mask object, but the "mask" property appears to be null for all objects on the masked layer, even though they share the same parent timeline as the unmasked objects (i.e. unmasked layer object parent == masked layer object parent; therefore, no masked subcontainers appear to be in use).

  • How can I get FlashVars values in ActionScript 2.0?

    - by AndreMiranda
    Hi! I have to dynamically send a flashvars value from <object>/<embed>, for example "<object name="flashvars" value="test=myxml.xml"> to my swf file. And in my AS, I have this: var xmlPath:String = _level0.test; doc.load(xmlPath); So, this way I want to read several xml files (at least it's my intention!). But nothing of what I do works... I also tried doc.load(_root.test) but it didnt work too. If I do: doc.load("someXML.xml") It works just fine!! I'm trying to solve this for many many hours and still didn't find any solution!! Thanks in advance!!!

  • When using the Facebook Connect Actionscript API (no JS, just straight Flash), how can I listen for

    - by techno
    Hey guys, When using the Facebook Connect AS API, the user will be prompted to log in to FB in a pop up window. At this point I want to block interaction in my flash movie and wait for them to complete logging in (or potentially close/cancel and not log in). I have seen examples where people put up a Flex "Alert" box with some hint like "Press ok once you have logged into facebook", but I want to automatically listen for them logging in or canceling/closing the popup window without logging in. Is there an event I can listen for with flash? So far I am using ZERO javascript, but I guess I could add a little if it is needed for this... I definitely want to avoid having some sort of "Press OK" alert box, but instead have the flash application automatically react to the user logging in with the popup window.

  • What is the recommended way of parsing an XML feed with multiple namespaces with ActionScript 3.0?

    - by dafko
    I have seen the following methods to be used in several online examples, but haven't found any documentation on the recommended way of parsing an XML feed. Method 1: protected function xmlResponseHandler(event:ResultEvent):void { var atom:Namespace = new Namespace("http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"); var microsoftData:Namespace = new Namespace("http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices"); var microsoftMetadata:Namespace = new Namespace("http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/metadata"); var ac:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(); var keyValuePairs:KeyValuePair; var propertyList:XMLList = (event.result as XML)..atom::entry.atom::content.microsoftMetadata::properties; for each (var properties:XML in propertyList) { keyValuePairs = new KeyValuePair(properties.microsoftData::FieldLocation, properties.microsoftData::Locationid); ac.addItem(keyValuePairs); } cb.dataProvider = ac; } Method 2: protected function xmlResponseHandler(event:ResultEvent):void { namespace atom = "http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"; namespace d = "http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices"; namespace m = "http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/metadata"; use namespace d; use namespace m; use namespace atom; var ac:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(); var keyValuePairs:KeyValuePair; var propertyList:XMLList = (event.result as XML)..entry.content.properties; for each (var properties:XML in propertyList) { keyValuePairs = new KeyValuePair(properties.FieldLocation, properties.Locationid); ac.addItem(keyValuePairs); } cb.dataProvider = ac; } Sample XML feed: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1" standalone="yes"?> <feed xml:base="http://www.test.com/Test/my.svc/" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices" xmlns:m="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/metadata" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"> <title type="text">Test_Locations</title> <id>http://www.test.com/test/my.svc/Test_Locations</id> <updated>2010-04-27T20:41:23Z</updated> <link rel="self" title="Test_Locations" href="Test_Locations" /> <entry> <id>1</id> <title type="text"></title> <updated>2010-04-27T20:41:23Z</updated> <author> <name /> </author> <link rel="edit" title="Test_Locations" href="http://www.test.com/id=1" /> <category term="MySQLModel.Test_Locations" scheme="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/scheme" /> <content type="application/xml"> <m:properties> <d:FieldLocation>Test Location</d:FieldLocation> <d:Locationid>test0129</d:Locationid> </m:properties> </content> </entry> <entry> <id>2</id> <title type="text"></title> <updated>2010-04-27T20:41:23Z</updated> <author> <name /> </author> <link rel="edit" title="Test_Locations" href="http://www.test.com/id=2" /> <category term="MySQLModel.Test_Locations" scheme="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/scheme" /> <content type="application/xml"> <m:properties> <d:FieldLocation>Yet Another Test Location</d:FieldLocation> <d:Locationid>test25</d:Locationid> </m:properties> </content> </entry> </feed>

  • How to exit an air application from an actionscript library?

    - by Vincen Collins
    I am trying the following but every once in awhile the nativeApp is not defined. var nativeApp:Object = getDefinitionByName("flash.desktop.NativeApplication"); nativeApp.nativeApplication.exit(); I am confused why sometimes getDefinitionByName("flash.desktop.NativeApplication") resolves and other times it does not. I am trying to resolve this problem to address the following issue in flexcover - http://code.google.com/p/flexcover/issues/detail?id=33

  • How do I set the dimensions of a custom component defined in an ActionScript class?

    - by user339681
    I'm trying to set the height of a vertical bar (activityBar) but it does not appear to do anything. i have tried something similar with the whole component, but setting the dimensions does nothing (even in the mxml used to instantiate the class). Indeed, I've added transparent graphics just to give the component some dimensions I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. It's something bad though; my approach seems dire. FYI: I'm trying to create a mic activity bar that will respond to the mic by simply setting the height of the activityBar child (which seems to me to be more efficient than redrawing the graphics each time). Thanks for your help! package components { import mx.core.UIComponent; public class MicActivityBar extends UIComponent { public var activityBar:UIComponent; // Constructor public function MicActivityBar() { super(); this.opaqueBackground = 0xcc4444; graphics.beginFill(0xcccccc, 0); graphics.drawRect(0,-15,5,30); graphics.endFill();// background for bar activityBar = new UIComponent(); activityBar.graphics.beginFill(0xcccccc, 0.8); activityBar.graphics.drawRect(0,-15,5,20); activityBar.graphics.endFill(); activityBar.height=10; addChild(activityBar); } } }

  • What is a good platform for building a game framework targetting both web and native languages?

    - by fuzzyTew
    I would like to develop (or find, if one is already in development) a framework with support for accelerated graphics and sound built on a system flexible enough to compile to the following: native ppc/x86/x86_64/arm binaries or a language which compiles to them javascript actionscript bytecode or a language which compiles to it (actionscript 3, haxe) optionally java I imagine, for example, creating an API where I can open windows and make OpenGL-like calls and the framework maps this in a relatively efficient manner to either WebGL with a canvas object, 3d graphics in Flash, OpenGL ES 2 with EGL, or desktop OpenGL in an X11, Windows, or Cocoa window. I have so far looked into these avenues: Building the game library in haXe Pros: Targets exist for php, javascript, actionscript bytecode, c++ High level, object oriented language Cons: No support for finally{} blocks or destructors, making resource cleanup difficult C++ target does not allow room for producing highly optimized libraries -- the foreign function interface requires all primitive types be boxed in a wrapper object, as if writing bindings for a scripting language; these feel unideal for real-time graphics and audio, especially exporting low-level functions. Doesn't seem quite yet mature Using the C preprocessor to create a translator, writing programs entirely with macros Pros: CPP is widespread and simple to use Cons: This is an arduous task and probably the wrong tool for the job CPP implementations differ widely in support for features (e.g. xcode cpp has no variadic macros despite claiming C99 compliance) There is little-to-no room for optimization in this route Using llvm's support for multiple backends to target c/c++ to web languages Pros: Can code in c/c++ LLVM is a very mature highly optimizing compiler performing e.g. global inlining Targets exist for actionscript (alchemy) and javascript (emscripten) Cons: Actionscript target is closed source, unmaintained, and buggy. Javascript targets do not use features of HTML5 for appropriate optimization (e.g. linear memory with typed arrays) and are immature An LLVM target must convert from low-level bytecode, so high-level constructs are lost and bloated unreadable code is created from translating individual instructions, which may be more difficult for an unprepared JIT to optimize. "jump" instructions cause problems for languages with no "goto" statements. Using libclang to write a translator from C/C++ to web languages Pros: A beautiful parsing library providing easy access to the code structure Can code in C/C++ Has sponsored developer effort from Apple Cons: Incomplete; current feature set targets IDEs. Basic operators are unexposed and must be manually parsed from the returned AST element to be identified. Translating code prior to compilation may forgo optimizations assumed in c/c++ such as inlining. Creating new code generators for clang to translate into web languages Pros: Can code in C/C++ as libclang Cons: There is no API; code structure is unstable A much larger job than using libclang; the innards of clang are complex Building the game library in Common Lisp Pros: Flexible, ancient, well-developed language Extensive introspection should ease writing translators Translators exist for at least javascript Cons: Unfamiliar language No standardized library functions, widely varying implementations Which of these avenues should I pursue? Do you know of any others, or any systems that might be useful? Does a general project like this exist somewhere already? Thank you for any input.

  • How to suppress Flash migration warnings (1090)

    - by aaaidan
    I get "migration issue" warnings when I use mouse/keyboard input handler names such as onMouseDown, onKeyUp, etc. These names are perfectly legal, but sensibly, we are now warned that their use is no longer automatic in ActionScript 3. I want to suppress these warnings, but without suppressing all other warnings, which I find useful. E.g., when I use code like this: protected override function onMouseDown(e:MouseEvent):void { I get an annoying warning like this: Warning: 1090: Migration issue: The onMouseDown event handler is not triggered automatically by Flash Player at run time in ActionScript 3.0. You must first register this handler for the event using addEventListener ( 'mouseDown', callback_handler). There are flex compiler (mxmlc) flags which can suppress actionscript warnings, or all warnings, but I don't want that. That's to general. Ideally I could suppress a specific error/warning number (Warning #1090). Halp?

  • Exporting SWF With Transparent Background For Scaleform/UDK

    - by Alex Shepard
    After looking all over in the UDN and forums I have yet to find a solution for this: I am currently using Flash CS3 and Actionscript 2.0 to build my scaleform menus and I can use them in the UDK. For various reasons I can't use the handy plugin Autodesk supplies to enable this export so I publish my flash documents to swf the old fassioned way and manually use the gfxexport.exe tool to get my .gfx file. I can then import into the UDK the normal way. My problem is that the flash movies that I import will not alpha blend even if the material is set to blend in the alpha channel of the target render texture. My project images are set up to export properly. My classpath for Actionscript 2.0 is set to the correct location. My HTML publish settings have window mode set to Transparent Windowless. Is it possible to export without the scaleform flash extension and still get the desired effects and if so how might I do so? Am I merely missing something from my project setup?

  • Web and Flex developer career question [closed]

    - by abhilashm86
    Possible Duplicate: should i concentrate on logical and puzzles part in programming, i want to be a web (flex)developer? I'm a computer science student and have been learning Flex and Actionscript 3.0 for 4 months. I know it's easy to program in MXML, and Actionscript 3.0 is pretty easy with bunch of classes, but when I try to code in C++ or C, I struggle, I feel I'm being inefficient and it scares me. Since I'm a student, I've no experience in developing algorithms and tough program solving? I'd like to be a web developer. Does a web developer need strong fundamentals when it comes to things such as complex algorithms and high end coding?

  • How to monetize and/or protect framework rights?

    - by Arthur Wulf White
    I made a game engine/framerwork for ActionScript 3 that allows very efficient and flexible level design for Platformers, Tower Defense game, RPG's, RTS and racing games. The algorithms I used are new and are not available in any other level editor I've seen. What are the best ways to benefit myself and others with my new framework? It is written for ActionScript 3 so unless I translate it to C# I'm guessing it will be decompiled and used by others. I want to have some lisence, allowing me to share the framework and still benefit from it. Any advice would be appreciated. This issue has been on my mind a lot this year. I am hoping to find a solution that will bring me some relief.

  • Architecture for a farmville/yoville/cafe world type game?

    - by Joff
    I'm thinking of building a game along the lines of Farmville - items, events, time management system etc. Options I am thinking of: 1) Flash UI frontend that uses AMFPHP to get all data for the view from a PHP powered backend. 2) Actionscript to power the whole game Any input is appreciated. My concern with Actionscript is scaling, my concern with PHP is having to build an update system that would need a lot of back and forth xmlhttprequests which might get complicated. If there's a better way to build something like this, I'm all ears :)

  • What are your feelings on JavaFX?

    - by ForYourOwnGood
    I currently do a lot of work in ActionScript 3.0, I also love to program in Java. Is JavaFX perfect for me? What is the general feeling on JavaFX, will it become a power house, or go down the same path as Java Applets? Could the designers I work with become comfortable with JavaFX to the same extent they are comfortable with ActionScript and JavaScript?
