• ATI propriatery drivers install latest 12.8, broke my kernel. Stuck on kernel 3.2.0-26

  I messed up a bit. Hoping some here can help me. I tried to install the newest catalyst 12.8. Sadly, this broke my system. I was stuck in low graphics mode. I finally managed to restore the proprietary drivers, and get into ubuntu again. But now I am stuck on kernel 3.2.0.26. I had installed kernel 3.2.0-30, but the system no longer sees it. I have kernel 3.2.0-29 too, but the system cannot see that as well. In the grub menu. When I use sudo update-grub, they are both listed.   Using Sinatra in Ruby you can set the server's settings by doing: set :myvariable, "MyValue" and then access it anywhere in templates etc with settings.myvariable. In my script I need to be able to re-set these variables falling back to a bunch of defaults. I figured the easiest way to do this would be to have a function that performs all the sets calling it at the start of the Sinatra server and when I need to make the alterations: class MyApp < Sinatra::Application helpers do def set_settings s = settings_from_yaml() set :myvariable, s['MyVariable'] || "default" end end # Here I would expect to be able to do: set_settings() # But the function isn't found! get '/my_path' do if things_go_right set_settings end end # Etc end As explained in the code above, the set_settings function isn't found, am I going about this the wrong way?

  I'm writing a test app using the twitter gem and I'd like to write an integration test but I can't figure out how to mock the objects in the Twitter namespace.   I struggle to find a model how to store a playlist with different type of items on it in Rails. Consider I have class Track end class Album has_many :tracks end class PlaylistItem belongs_to :playable belongs_to :playlist end class Playable belongs_to :playable, :polymorph => true end class Playlist has_many :playlist_items end I think I can use a polymorphic model "Playable" here since the Playlist can contain Tracks, Albums and maybe in the future also Movies. Also I would like to use STI for Track and Albums since they share some common attributes like title and length but also have totally different attributes. I modeled it like described here but it does not work. Anybody any idea how to model a Playlist that can contain many items of different kind?

  So my situation is: I have a 2 modules that have the same structure like that: module Module1 class Config def fee_rate 2 end end end So, say, Module2 would have class Config with the method fee_rate, just with a different value (those are actually implemented in a rails engine, but it shouldn't matter) and then my model can use either Module1 or Module2 to get the fee rate value like that: def config @config ||= "#{module_name.titleize}::Config".constantize.new @config end def get_value config.get_fee * some_other_value end What I'm trying to test is if get_fee function was called on the correct class: "#{model.module_name.titleize}::Config".constantize.any_instance.expects(:get_fee).at_least_once model.get_value and on the line when I call get_value I get the following error - undefined method `*' for nil:NilClass. I'm completely lost now, so I'd appreciate any help and ideas.

  I was asked by somebody in an interview for web front end job, to write a function that generates all permutation of a string, such as "abc" (or consider it ['a', 'b', 'c']). so the expected result from the function, when given ['a', 'b', 'c'], is abc acb bac bca cab cba Actually in my past 20 years of career, I have never needed to do something like that, especially when doing front end work for web programming. What are some practical use of this problem nowadays, in web programming, front end or back end, I wonder? As a side note, I kind of feel that expecting a result in 3 minutes might be "either he gets it or he doesn't", especially I was thinking of doing it by a procedural, non-recursive way at first. After the interview, I spent another 10 minutes and thought of how to do it using recursion, but expecting it to be solved within 3 minutes... may not be a good test of how qualified he is, especially for front end work.

  I implement a class hierarchy using STI pattern class A scope :aaa, where([someField]:[someValue]) end class B < A end The problem is that when I try to call something like: B.limit(5).aaa => SELECT "[table]".* FROM "[table]" WHERE "[table]"."type" IN ('A') AND ([someField] = [someValue]) LIMIT 5 So I am getting 5 objects of type A, which satisfies scope :aaa But I need to do the same with rows where type = "B" Is there any way to use scopes from parent, without redifinning it in childs in STI pattern?   Lua's tonumber function is nice but can only convert unsigned integers unless they are base 10. I have a situation where I have numbers like 01.4C that I would like to convert to decimal. • Using methods on 2 input files - 2nd is printing multiple times - Java

  I have the following code to read in text, store in a hashmap as bigrams (with other methods to sort them by frequency and do v. v. basic additive smoothing. I had it working great for one language input file (english) and then I want to expand it for the second language input file (japanese - doens;t matter what it is I suppose) using the same methods but the Japanese bigram hashmap is printing out 3 times in a row with diff. values. I've tried using diff text in the input file, making sure there are no gaps in text etc. I've also put print statements at certain places in the Japanese part of the code to see if I can get any clues but all the print statements are printing each time so I can't work out if it is looping at a certain place.   My question is similar to this combinations question but in my case I have N (N 4) small sets (1-2 items per set for now might go to 3 maybe 4) and want to generate each combination of one item from each set. The current solution looks somethinging along the lines of this for(T:: iterator a = setA.begin(); a != setA.end(); ++a) for(T:: iterator b = setB.begin(); b != setB.end(); ++b) for(T:: iterator c = setC.begin(); c != setC.end(); ++c) for(T:: iterator d = setD.begin(); d != setD.end(); ++d) for(T:: iterator e = setE.begin(); e != setE.end(); ++e) something(*a,*b,*c,*d,*e); Simple, effective, probably reasonably efficient, but ugly and not very extensible. Does anyone know of a better/cleaner way to do this?

• Pattern for unidirectional has_many join?

  It occurred to me that if I have a has_many join, where the foreign model does not have a belongs_to, and so the join is one way, then I don't actually need a foreign key. We could have a column, category_ids, which stores a marshaled Array of IDs which we can pass to find.
