• IDE <-> SATA Adapter Issue - Hard Drive Not recognized

  I was trying to use one of these IDE to SATA adapters (Syba SD-ADA50016 IDE/SATA Converter Bi-directional IDE to SATA) and I connected a working hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 500 GB SATA 3.5 Inch 7200 RPM Version 12 Desktop Internal Hard Drive ST3500418AS). I could get the drive to be recognized by the BIOS, but I couldn't boot a Linux disc or install to the drive. I tried to install pfSense to this drive and the install failed because the setup couldn't recognize the file. Has anyone heard of these adapters giving trouble and/or not working properly? I would like to be able to use this device for newer drives on older boards.

• Boot drive is incorrect one.

  I have several hard drives installed. I normally use c: as my boot drive and a much larger drive (h:) for storing most of my files. I found a subfolder in my c:windows folder named windows after a failed reinstall of Vista. Upon inspection I determined it to be older than the c:windows folder and therefore it must be the older, working version of the boot. I renamed the c:windows folder to c:windows.bad and moved the sub windows to the c: root directory. I also copied it to the h: drive. Now MSCONFIG reports that the copy that is booting is the h: copy. How can I change it back to the c: copy and can I delete the c:windows.bad file set?

• Windows 2008 terminal server - How to restrict access to DVD/floppy?

  I has a very simple task. I need to block access to removable media (CD, DVD, floppy, USB drives etc.) on a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server for users and allow it for admins. I tried to enable the following policy in GPO: User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Removable Storage Access All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access = Enabled But it did not work. I tried different physical and virtual 2008 servers with the same result. It works on Windows 7 but not on Windows 2008. Has anyone had success with this parameter on Windows 2008? Thank you

• Is a "failed" RAID 5 disk really no good?

  This is my first venture in to setting up RAID on my home system. After installing 3 x 1TB drives in RAID 5, everything was running well for about 10 days. Then, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software that monitors the disks and RAID on my system, told me that I had a failed drive. I marked the drive as good, and the array rebuilt. Then a day or so later I got a notification again, that the drive failed. I'm just wondering if this drive really is no good or if there is something I can do to get it working again? Or, do I just need to return it to the store where I bought it and get a replacement?

• 3ware RAID in Windows 7

  Just moved a 3ware 9500S-8 raid card and a few drives from my linux box into my win7 box. Windows Updates picked up the 3ware driver and installed it. After a reboot I checked Disk Management and it shows the array as one solid drive with the correct size. The only issue is that its not assigned a drive letter and when I right click on it my only option is to Convert to Dynamic Disk... From what I've read this is not something I want to do. What are my options?

• Cannot boot to HDD or Optical when Motherboard in AHCI mode

  I have an Abit AB9 QuadGT motherboard and am trying to swap over to AHCI mode. I have an existing Windows 7 installation which was installed under IDE mode. I have set the msahci registry setting to 0. When I try to boot in AHCI mode I get "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I have tried booting with my Win 7 DVD in the optical drive. There is 1 SSD (System), 1 HDD (Data) and 2 optical drives connected via SATA If I switch back to IDE mode everything boots fine, either from the SSD or from a CD or DVD in the optical drive. Why can't I use AHCI mode?

• Server only powers (but doesn't POST) when IDE drive is powered

  So after a thunderstorm last night which did a little damage, a Gigabyte server has decided it's going on power on but not POST. If it is POSTing, it's doing a very bad job at telling me. No beeps, nothing. Power seems to reach the components though. CD Drive opens and closes. So after stripping it back, I've found that the difference between this behaviour and deciding it's not going to power on for more than half a second, is having a power cable plugged in to one of the IDE hard drives. Is this normal, or a sign that the PSU has had it?

• Why is a ZFS pool not persisting over server restart?

  I have a ZFS pool with 4 drives. It also has a 3gb ZIL and a 20GB L2ARC that are each partitions on an SDD that doubles as my Linux Mint (ver. 13) boot drive. The pool is mounted to /data. The problem I am running into is that when I restart the server the pool/directory is completely wiped despite having data in it prior. I'm afraid I'm doing something wrong in the setup, which leads me to the following questions: What would cause this? Is there anyway to get the data back? How do I stop it from happening in the future? • Set-and-forget Windows backup software with NAS-support?

  I am looking for set-and-forget backup software for Windows (Vista & 7, and if possible XP/2003). The idea is that it runs in the background on the clients, and does its thing towards a network-share. In case the HDD of one of these clients spontaneously combusts, all I want to have to do is: replace the drive, insert a USB-stick, boot from it, and restore the machine. It should support drives which use [ICH]-RAID. What are my options here? It looks like WHS meets all the requirements, but I am curious about my other options here.

• Hardware Raid Card Reviews with SSDs

  Yes I realize there are several questions about this but none of them seem to have the answer I'm looking for. I have two SSDs and am looking to buy a purely hardware raid card for them; however, I can't seem to find any reviews that have specifically tested hardware raid cards with SSDs rather than testing the SSDs themselves. I'm looking for a review because I'm assuming that for example: 100% gain with two 7200rpm drives doesn't necessarily mean 100% gain with a pair of SSDs, since there would be higher speeds, meaning more throughput, meaning more processor/memory usage for the card. If this assumption is wrong then that's fantastic; however if it's true, I am quite sad and would really appreciate any advice or reviews you can find. Thanks in advance!

• DBan not working because disk has bad sectors? [migrated]

  Attempting to wipe the drive of a laptop that I have before it's sold, and normally use DBAN to do so. However this time it starts and then finishes instantly with the following message. "DBAN finished with non-fatal errors This is usually cause by disks with bad sectors" Have tried multiple flags such as noverify to force it to skip this check (it doesn't show bad sectors in the OS scan in windows). but the error always comes back. This is the only time that I've seen this message, as every other of the few drives I've used this software on usually take 3-5 hours to do their job.

• Installing raid controller forces reinstall of Windows Server 2008

  So, I've tried two different RAID controllers that have external SATA connections on my Server 2008 machine. I can install the hardware, boot into Windows, install the drivers and reboot again. No problems. However, as soon as I try to use eSATA-connected drives and reboot something happens to the Windows install and I can no longer boot into Windows. I tried repairing from the command line, and the end result is that repair console tells me I have 0 Windows installations (?). I end up having no choice but to reinstall Windows to get back on track. I must be doing something fundamentally wrong here, but I don't know what :(

• Network attached external harddrive from another computer.

  I have a server that is setup in raid. It is on the same network as my main computer. I would like to have some of the memory on my server to act as a network attached drive on my main computer. Basically, I want it to be a new data drive (similar two C:\, but 2nd drives are mostly E:). That way, I can reformat my main computer without loosing any important data. And the data that is saved (on server E:\ drive) is secured via raid mirroring.

• Anyone know of a good way to sell used servers?

  We have a couple of servers we no longer need now that we are fully hosted on a managed host (rackspace). They were purchased for over $10,000 each but we realize that over time their monetary value drops. Anyone have suggestions or experience selling these in a proper way? They are dual xeon processor 2U rack mountable with 4+GB RAM, intel boards, 6x 72GB 15,000 RPM SCSI Drives with raid controller redundant power supply. We are in Southern California area. I can be more specific on any information if there is interest. I know there is ebay and the like but these servers are like the family dog that has to be given up and we are looking for a proper home for a fair price. I will end up auctioning it off if need be in the end though. Thanks in advanced for any help!

• What would happen in a Software Raid 1 of one HDD and one SSD?

  Hi, I'm running my Windows 7 installation and all of my apps from an SSD for performance reasons. Since SSD's can instantly die at any moment, I'm looking for some kind of data backup strategy. Right Now I regularly backing up the drive image on a hard disk, but that only happens once per day, which is not enough for my taste. So I got an idea: What if I created a software raid 1 of the SSD and partition on my Hard disk? All data would be mirrored on both drives, making this a lot safer. But what about performance? Will Windows 7 detect that the SSD is faster than the hard drive and always read from the SSD? Or will it randomly read from both, thus reducing read performance? • Installing Windows 7 destroyed my dual boot setup

  I have a laptop on which I have two drives with separate Windows XP installs, one barebones for music production, the other "normal" Windows XP with Office etc. (unfortunately the bios won't give a boot disk choice). Normally I would be presented with two Windows XPs on booting. Selecting the second one would get me into the "normal" installation on disk 1 (C:). Selecting the first in boot order would give me D:\ (disk 2) with the barebones XP. However, I installed Windows 7 Home onto disk 1 (C:), but there were no dual boot options anymore, even though I installed DualBoot Pro and added Windows XP disk D:. The options now show up, but selecting Windows XP just turns into a reboot back to where I started.

• Performance Alert Writing to event Log but not running program

  I followed the instructions here How to create and configure performance alerts in Windows Server 2003 to set up an alert if the available logical disk space on one of my drives goes below a certain number. I selected the option to write to the application event log and select the "run this program" option and put in the path to a script that sends me an email. If I copy the path to the script and run it everything works and I get the email. When I start the alert I can see that the limit I set is being exceeded and the logs are being written to the application log, but the email is never being sent. I have the runas user and pword set to a Domain Admin. If I make the "run this program path" to C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe" it also doesn't start up the calculator. The Performance Logs and alerts services is running as Local Admin with allow to interact with desktop. What am I doing wrong?

  Today I set up my first RAID ever. I decided to use RAID5, because I want as much space as possible, but I'm to afraid to use RAID0 because of possible data loss. I have 4 0,5TB drives and in RAID5 I have about 1,36TB usable. That's fine by me. Now I have a question. I'm thinking about purchasing a 2TB drive and can't figure out if it is possible to add it to this RAID (4*0,5TB + 1*2TB HDD) and how much space will I gain.   I made a backup of one of my external drives to another. They are both NTFS filesystems. I moved ALL disk contents into a folder called a and right clicked to get file/folder/size count. They are exactly the same. However windows reports J having 1.33gb (backup) and Q: as 521mb. Now I think maybe its because of hardlinks, I must have more on J then Q. How might I figure out how many hardlinks I have in a drive?

• Configure Mouse Buttons for "Administrator"/Elevated privileges

  I am, for better or worse, an administrator on my Windows 7 machine. However, even then, I still need to run certain programs "as Administrator" - for example, Visual Studio 2008 when working with local IIS sites. I also like to have the extra buttons on my IntelliMouse Optical doing non-standard things, like representing Ctrl and Shift. However, when in VS running as administrator, these settings aren't picked up, just like my mapped drives aren't picked up - I would understand this if I was logging in as a different user, supplying credentials, etc, but I'm not, I'm just pressing "Yes" at the UAC prompt. Normally, I'd just right click the item in the start menu and select "Run as administrator", but that's not an option on the context menu for either the Microsoft IntelliPoint Mouse application that appears under "Programs", nor the "Mouse" control panel item. Running the control panel as administrator also doesn't seem to help. So has any one got any suggestions on how I can configure my mouse buttons for the elevated version of me that Visual Studio is running as?

• Getting around the lack of GPT support with CentOS 5.4

  Here is my issue and I hoping that there is someone out there that has an answer so I don't end up stuck here at my co-location all day. Last night I came here and upgraded a server (Dell 2970) to have four 1TB Hard Drives in RAID 5 which leaves a 3TB block. I tried to partition this but keep getting an error that GPT is not supported so I found a site online telling me I need to run the dd command and right random data to /dev/sda. This is great (if it works) but taking forever. I have two more machines to upgrade today and not a chair in site. Does anyone have advice on how I can avoid this issue beforehand?   I have an Acer Aspire S3 ultrabook. It comes with two separate drives, one 320 gb hdd and a 20 gb ssd, which Windows uses for hibernation. I formatted the SSD and installed Ubuntu on it. How do I format the SSD so that Windows recognizes the SSD as the hibernation drive, like the way it came out of the box? Acer really had an interesting way of using the SSD.   We are a bootstrapped web start up. We have a LAMP web application that we expect relatively low to mid traffic because users need an account to log in. Our current approach is to colocate two servers, a web and mysql database server. We are planning to use Ubuntu Server 9.04. We have shopped around for dedicated servers but the price range from $900 to $1500 per month, therefore we are exploring the colocation approach. We are considering purchasing two Mac Minis (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2 Gb RAM) because we are familiar with the machines are the prices are relatively inexpensive. What are the pros and cons of using these 'non-server' grade machines? We would install Ubuntu Sever and attach firewire external hard drives. Any advice on how to set up 'good-and-economic' web/database servers is welcomed.

• Xeon X5550 vs Six-core Opteron for database server

  I'm specing out a database server, and the price works out to be reasonably close between an Intel X5550 Quad-core and an AMD 2425HE (2.1Ghz) Six-core Opteron. I've been looking for some comparisons between the two, but the only thing useful I've found is an AnandTech Review of the 2435 which compares it to Intel Xeons, but concludes they both have their place. My load is MS SQL Server 2008, with an OLTP database that has about an equal amount of reading/writing (and it's a reasonably heavy load). So my question is, what is going to work better in this situation, assuming the drives are the same: Xeon X5550, with 16GB 1333Mhz RAM (Dell R510) or an Opteron 2425HE (2.1Ghz) or 2439SE (2.8Ghz) with 16GB of 800Mhz RAM? (Dell 2970) Note: the 2439 adds $500, but the overall pricing works out that it's not that much more than the R510. Using the 2425HE, the Dell 2970 server is slightly less than the similarly-equipped R510). If it adds a decent amount of performance, it's worthwhile to go faster. (single CPU, in both cases).

  Hello I am trying to Burn a disk let me catch you up where I am at as I have a very SPECIFIC question and it may be difficult to explain but I will try to keep it simple: I have software already in an ISO file; I am using Daemon tools on a Windows based PC What I am wanting to do is create the actual Picture (not disk image file) that will show up on the Disk drive when I insert the disk Eg: if you put microsoft Office 11 in your comp. you open up My Computer to view all your HD and Disk drives you will see the image that microsoft put on the disk which is a silver CD and the Microsoft Office logo on the top corner. I would like to know how to edit my current ISO file or what I need to do in order to put "A PICTURE" or "AN ICON FILE" on the CD/DVD so that when I insert the disk into any PC it will show up with the PICTURE OR ICON file I chose and look proffessional.
