• App engine downtime

  I've noticed that google app engine seems to have a fair amount of downtime where they place the datastore into read-only mode. Frequently this downtime is in the middle of the day. Is this something that is happening only during early development, or is this something that I can expect to be always be occurring? I've developing an application that helps small businesses handle their operations. One thing that it does is take appointments, another is route phone calls. I'd like some suggestions on how to handle times when the datastore is in read-only such as: What if our client is on the phone with the customer and is taking down an appointment and the datastore is in read-only? It would not be acceptable to ask the client to come back later to save, especially if its in the middle of the day. What if there is an incoming call and the application can not store the record or properly route the call due to database writes being unavailable? How are these types of issues normally handled?

• Is there a web site where I can paste a SQL Insert statement and have it break it out by column?

  I've been working on an application that has no discernable data access layer, so all the SQL statements are just built up as strings and executed. I'm constantly confronted by very long INSERT statements where I'm trying to figure out what value in the VALUES list matches up with what column in the column name list. I was about to create a little helper application where I could paste in an INSERT statement and have it show me a list of values matched up with the column names, just for debugging, and I thought, "someone else has probably done this already." Does anyone know of a web site where I can just paste in an INSERT statement and have it show me a two column table with column names in the first column and values in the second column?

  Hello, I am using NetBeans 6.8 on Redhat Linux. Does anyone know how to configure NetBeans to debug (step into) libraries not compiled with NetBeans? In my particular case, I'm trying to debug the VTK library which is built using cmake with the Debug flag set. I've written a C++ application that uses the shared libraries from VTK. Any ideas? I'd tried the obvious things like adding the source locations to the project. Note that with gdb I can debug the application and set breakpoints anywhere in VTK. Any help would be appreciated. • WPF windows locked when calling webservice. Even when run asynchronously

  Hi there. I'm having a big problem when calling a web service from my WPF application. The application/window locks until the process has completed. I've attempted to run this asynchronously but the problem still persists. Currently, the web service call I'm making can last 45-60 seconds. It runs a process on the server to fetch a big chunk of data. As it take a little while I wanted to have a progress bar moving indeterminately for the user to see that the application hasn't stalled or anything (you know how impatatient they get). • Date in textboxes changing format

  I have an application (asp.net 3.5) that support 4 different languages. Along with other cultural changes, the date formats must match the current culture on out reporting pages. We set the date formats of each of the textboxes like: string date = DateTime.Today.ToString("d"); //returns the date portion only textbox1.Text = date; textbox2.Text = date; etc... When the user selects Spanish or British English the format should be dd/mm/yyyy. However, then I navigate to the page it displays in mm/dd/yyyy. After a postback it then displays dd/mm/yyyy. After another postback it switches to the mm/dd/yyyy format and on and on. I have debugged through this and I see that the culture is correct for the application and the date formats are returned to me correctly, yet when it displays, it displays incorrectly. Has anyone ever seen this or know what is happening?

• In what package should a "Settings" class be?

  I've in the middle of building an application but found myself too easily creating new packages without keeping the project's structure in mind. Now, I'm trying to redo the whole project structure on paper first. I am using a Settings class with public properties, accessed as settings for several other classes around the project. Now, since this Settings class applies for the whole project, I am unsure if it should be packaged and if so, in what kind of package should it exist? Or should it be in the root (the default package) with the main application class? I've been thinking about putting it in my utils package, then again I don't think it really is an utlity. Any strategies on how to decide on such package structure for example for a Settings class?

Since most of my Controller implementations just implement the similar CRUD operations, I would like to just create a single Generic controller, as explained here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/848904/in-asp-net-mvc-is-it-possible-to-make-a-generic-controller However, the above example doesn't take DI frameworks into consideration.   I already have an express checkout integrated with my Codeigniter application. Now I want to integrate seamless paypal where I collect the CC information and pass it to Paypal (via backend) and once everything is approved, my application shows that to the user. All this with out ever going to Paypal's website. I know that Paypal gives a bunch of sample code but they have so many different products that advertise to do the same thing. Is there any wrapper library in PHP that I can use for handling all this? What sort of design decision is involved in migrating to such system? Would I need SSL certificates for this?

  My Android project references external classfiles that are not included in the in the Android SDK. I added those classes as an external library properly in eclipse. The code compiles with no problem. But as I try to run the application I get an ClassNotFoundException by the DalvikVM, although all the neccessary classes have been ported. Am I missing something?   In a Silverlight application I have large images which have flow charts on them. I need to handle the clicks on specific hotspots of the image where the flow chart boxes are. Since the flow charts will always be different, the information of where the hotspots has to be dynamic, e.g. in a list of coordinates. I've found article like this one but don't need the detail of e.g. the outline of countries but just simple rectangle and circle areas. I've also found articles where they talk about overlaying an HTML image map over the silverlight application, but it has to be easier than this. What is the best way to handle clicks on specific areas of an image in silverlight?

  I've written an rspec test using Watir against a web application and it's running fine. However, I now want to be able to run this test against the web application running on different domain names. My initial thought was that I'd be able to pass a value to spec at the command line to set a variable within my script, but I can't see any easy method of doing this. So my second thought was that I might need to add an array of domains into my script and have it test all of them - but I don't always want to test every domain, and the domains are constantly changing as we add and remove sites to be tested. What are my options for allowing the choice of targets I want?

• Avoding multiple thread spawns in pthreads

  Hi StackOverflow, I have an application that is parallellized using pthreads. The application has a iterative routine call and a thread spawn within the rountine (pthread_create and pthread_join) to parallelize the computation intensive section in the routine. When I use an instrumenting tool like PIN to collect the statistics the tool reports statistics for several threads(no of threads x no of iterations). I beleive it is because it is spawning new set of threads each time the routine is called. How can I ensure that I create the thread only once and all successive calls use the threads that have been created first. When I do the same with OpenMP and then try to collect the statistics, I see that the threads are created only once. Is it beacause of the OpenMP runtime ? Thanks.

• Where to handle fatal exceptions

  I am considering a design where all fatal exceptions will be handled using a custom UncaughtExceptionHandler in a Swing application. This will include unanticipated RuntimeExceptions but also custom exceptions which are thrown when critical resources are unavailable or otherwise fail (e.g. a settings file not found, or a server communication error). The UncaughtExceptionHandler will do different things depending on the specific custom exception (and one thing for all the unanticipated), but in all cases the application will show the user an error message and exit. The alternative would be to keep the UncaughtExceptionHandler for all unanticipated exceptions, but handle all other fatal scenarios close to their origin. Is the design I'm considering sound, or should I use the alternative?

  I am using MFC to write a GUI application. I chose dialog-based application, and put picture control, edit box and buttons on it. When the picture control is mapped to the class derived from CWnd using DDX_Control, all the message boxes (including default system message box pop up when you enter invalid input in the edit box) are hidden behind main dialog until you use "alt + tab" to bring them to front. If I map the picture control to the default CStatic class, the above problem disappeared. Do anyone has some hints to solve this problem? Thank you in advance for any help.

  I am working on a simple app tab-bar based application that has two views. The first is the main application and the second is a simple instruction screen. What I am trying to do is create a update a label on that second screen as things change in the main app. Because the second screen is only simple with one label and some text I am not unloading it once its loaded. After the first viewDidLoad I can update the label just fine, but after that is there a way to catch successive view switches from the tab-bar menu so I can update the label? many thanks gary

• How to run a .exe with dll in different location

  I am working in C# and implementing Plugin Management feature to our application. I look through dll and exe to load up plugins that are in a specific folder say Plugins. These plugin applications have their own folder when they are installed and I will copy over the plugin application exe/dll to the Plugins folder. However, there are some plugin applications that requires other dlls to run, but I want to minimize the duplication. Is there a way that I can just copy over the .exe to the Plugins folder and have the other dependent dll files locate in other folder? How would I load the the plugin in c# if the .exe and .dll is not in the same location? Thanks.
