• Choking experienced while using the TCP/IP Adapter for BizTalk Server 2006

  I am using the TCP/IP Adapter for BizTalk Server 2006 which was obtained from codeplex: http://www.codeplex.com/BTSTCPIP Once the application was deployed in production, we started to experience choking in the performance of the application. The more the requests, the more the performance degradation. Sometimes, it happens that the receive ports become non-responsive and we have to forcefully restart the host instances to temporarily let the services respond again but we experience the same problems again and again. I would like to ask if any of you have used the same adapter and have you ever experienced the similar issues? If yes, how can we overcome theses issues. Thanks.

• C# Speech Recognition - Is this what the user said?

  I have need to write an application which uses a speech recognition engine -- either the built in vista one, or a third party one -- that can display a word or phrase, and recognise when the user reads it (or an approximation of it). I also need to be able to switch quickly between languages, without changing the language of the operating system. The users will be using the system for very short periods. The application needs to work without the requirement of first training the recognition engine to the users' voices. It would also be fantastic if this could work on Windows XP or lesser versions of Windows Vista. Optionally, the system needs to be able to read information on the screen back to the user, in the user's selected language. I can work around this specification using pre-recorded voice-overs, but the preferred method would be to use a text-to-speech engine. Can anyone recommend something for me?

• Windows Question: RunOnce/Second Boot Issues [closed]

  Moved to Super User: Windows Question: RunOnce/Second Boot Issues I am attempting to create a Windows XP SP3 image that will run my application on Second Boot. Here is the intended workflow. 1) Run Image Prep Utility (I wrote) on windows to add my runonce entries and clean a few things up. 2) Reboot to ghost, make image file. 3) Package into my ISO and distribute. 4) System will be imaged by user. 5) On first boot, I have about 5 things that run, one of which includes a driver updater (I wrote) for my own specific devices. 6) One of the entries inside of HKCU/../runonce is a reg file, which adds another key to HKLM/../runonce. This is how second boot is acquired. 7) As a result of the driver updater, user is prompted to reboot. 8) My application is then launched from HKLM/../runonce on second boot. This workflow works perfectly, except for a select few legacy systems that contain devices that cause the add hardware wizard to pop up. When the add hardware wizard pops up is when I begin to see problems. It's important to note, that if I manually inspect the registry after the add hardware wizard pops up, it appears as I would expect, with all the first boot scripts having run, and it's sitting in a state I would correctly expect it to be in for a second boot scenario. The problem comes when I click next on the add hardware wizard, it seems to re-run the single entry I've added, and re-executes the runonce scripts. (only one script now as it's already executed and cleared out the initial entries). This causes my application to open as if it were a second boot, only when next is clicked on the add hardware wizard. If I click cancel, and reboot, then it also works as expected. I don't care as much about other solutions, because I could design a system that doesn't fully rely on Microsoft's registry. I simply can't find any information as to WHY this is happening. I believe this is some type of Microsoft issue that's presenting itself as a result of an overstretched image that's expected to support too many legacy platforms, but any help that can be provided would be appreciated. • Do not use IE browser settings when using a proxy with Indy

  Hi At one of our customer sites, we have a Delphi 2007 application that makes a number of HTTPS requests using indy components. All requests are made using the proxy settings the client provides. For this to work, in IE we have to put the URL's in the trusted zones section. After a month due to security settings the trusted zones are cleared. This means we have to re-add the URLs again to make our application work. Is there a way of bypassing IE settings or using a client side HTTP stack so we do not go through the browser to make https requests? JD

• Slowness of Netbeans Platform Apps - how to mitigate?

  Hi, We are developing a commerical application (pretty complex) in java using Netbeans IDE. We have 2 options in netbeans to create it- 1. Develop Java desktop app 2. Netbeans Platform app We have requirement that application startup and response times should be very very fast, should be modular etc. We did Proof of Technology by creating apps using both approaches mentioned above. We found Netbeans platform apps are very slow during startup and during screen navigation compared to pure Swing based desktop apps. We tried to implement suggestions provided at http://wiki.netbeans.org/Category:Performance:FAQ and in other blogs and forums to improve on speed of the app but were not successful. We feel for creating a complex desktop app Netbeans platform app would be better suited, but its not meeting our performance requirements (startup and response times, memory footprints, CPU usage guidelines etc). Can any one guide us on how to mitigate our problem of improving performance of Netbeans Platforms apps? Thanks in advance for your help. -bhan

  From PyPubSub: Pypubsub provides a simple way for your Python application to decouple its components: parts of your application can publish messages (with or without data) and other parts can subscribe/receive them. This allows message "senders" and message "listeners" to be unaware of each other: one doesn't need to import the other a sender doesn't need to know "who" gets the messages, what the listeners will do with the data, or even if any listener will get the message data. similarly, listeners don't need to worry about where messages come from. This is a great tool for implementing a Model-View-Controller architecture or any similar architecture that promotes decoupling of its components. There seem to be quite a few Python modules for publishing/subscribing floating around the web, from PyPubSub, to PyDispatcher to simple "home-cooked" classes. Can you recommend a module that works well in most cases ? Which modules have you had positive experience with ? Negative ? Thanks in advance

• In a PHP project, how do you organize and access your helper objects?

  How do you organize and manage your helper objects like the database engine, user notification, error handling and so on in a PHP based, object oriented project? Say I have a large PHP CMS. The CMS is organized in various classes. A few examples: the database object user management an API to create/modify/delete items a messaging object to display messages to the end user a context handler that takes you to the right page a navigation bar class that shows buttons a logging object possibly, custom error handling etc. I am dealing with the eternal question, how to best make these objects accessible to each part of the system that needs it. my first apporach, many years ago was to have a $application global that contained initialized instances of these classes. global $application; $application->messageHandler->addMessage("Item successfully inserted"); I then changed over to the Singleton pattern and a factory function: $mh =&factory("messageHandler"); $mh->addMessage("Item successfully inserted"); but I'm not happy with that either. Unit tests and encapsulation become more and more important to me, and in my understanding the logic behind globals/singletons destroys the basic idea of OOP. Then there is of course the possibility of giving each object a number of pointers to the helper objects it needs, probably the very cleanest, resource-saving and testing-friendly way but I have doubts about the maintainability of this in the long run. Most PHP frameworks I have looked into use either the singleton pattern, or functions that access the initialized objects. Both fine approaches, but as I said I'm happy with neither. I would like to broaden my horizon on what is possible here and what others have done. I am looking for examples, additional ideas and pointers towards resources that discuss this from a long-term, real-world perspective. Also, I'm interested to hear about specialized, niche or plain weird approaches to the issue. I assume that this is the reason for the latter error that I don't have a database configuration. • DotNetOpenAuth for previously authorized site

  I've had great luck with DotNetOpenAuth to do 3 legged authorization. Currently, I am connecting and pulling in some Google data. My question is that apparently, if you have already auth'd my web application to your Google account, when I call var accessTokenResponse = google.ProcessUserAuthorization(); It basically does nothing. How do I get the token for an account that has already auth'd my application? I see no callback of any kind. I'm chocking this up to my ignorance about OAuth in general.

• CF - CAB deployment

  Hello. I have followed this example http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa446504 and it works fine. The cab is created and i can copy it on the device and install the app. What im missing is that on device the application is not present in Programs folder. All i can do is browse to its location in /program files and run it manualy. Can some1 tell me how to: install CAB so it makes a shortcut in programs on device run the application automaticly after it has been installed thanx !

My application is developed on the Google App Engine. I would like to add a search engine but obviously without the need to public index it. Now im in a dilemma as to whether to refactor or rewrite the application. So if we type the blog address as http://www.skill-guru.com/blog it would add a / at end and open it as http://www.skill-guru.com/blog/ Now our application opens as root in domain http://www.skill-guru.com. Our blog is opening as http://www.skill-guru.com/blog/ but not as http://www.skill-guru.com/blog. I am not able to understand the reason. because of this issue , search is also not working. Can anyone please help me understand what has changed and how it can be fixed ?

• Is "Systems Designer" the job title that best describes what I do? [closed]

  After having worked as Java developer for almost 3 years in the same company that I currently work at, I moved to a new position associated with the development of the same application. I’m in this new position for more than 1 year now. My official job title is Systems Designer, but I’m not sure this is a title that expresses well what I do. So my question here is what would be the most appropriate job title for me? I see this question as important for my career development. After all, I should be able to explain in one word what I do. And it’s no longer “Java Developer”. Well, in more than one word, this is what I do: The business analysts gather requirements / business problems to be solved with the clients and then discuss these requirements with me. Given the requirements, I design the high level solutions to be implemented in our system (e.g. a new screen on the client application, modifications to existing reports, extension to the XML export format of some objects, etc). I base my decision on the current capabilities of the system, the overall impact that the solutions would have on the system and the estimated effort to implement them (as I was a developer of this same application for almost 3 years before I moved to this position, I’m confident in my estimates). The solutions are discussed iteratively with the business analysts until we agree that they are good. The outcome of this analysis is what we call the “requirements design” document, which is written by me, shared with clients for approval and then also with the team that is going to implement the solutions and test them. Note that there are a few problems that I need to find a solution for that are non-functional. If the users are unhappy with the performance of a certain tool, I will investigate what can be done to speed it up. I will do some research – often based in the Java code itself - to identify possibilities of optimizations. But in this new position I no longer code, the main outcome of my work is really the “requirements design”. Is “Systems Designer” really the most appropriate job title?

• iPhone OS: Rotate just the button images, not the views

  Hi, I am developing an iPad application which is basically a big drawing canvas with a couple of button at the side. (Doesn't sound very original, does it? :P) No matter how the user holds the device, the canvas should remain in place and should not be rotated. The simplest way to achieve this would be to support just one orientation. However, I would like the images on the buttons to rotate (like in the iPhone camera app) when the device is rotated. UIPopoverControllers should also use the users current orientation (and not appear sideways). What is the best way to achieve this? (I figured I could rotate the canvas back into place with an affineTransform, but I don't think it is ideal.) Thanks in advance!

• Hide public method used to help test a .NET assembly

  I have a .NET assembly, to be released. Its release build includes: A public, documented API of methods which people are supposed to use A public but undocumented API of other methods, which exist only in order to help test the assembly, and which people are not supposed to use The assembly to be released is a custom control, not an application. To regression-test it, I run it in a testing framework/application, which uses (in addition to the public/documented API) some advanced/undocumented methods which are exported from the control. For the public methods which I don't want people to use, I excluded them from the documentation using the <exclude> tag (supported by the Sandcastle Help File Builder), and the [EditorBrowsable] attribute, for example like this: /// <summary> /// Gets a <see cref="IEditorTransaction"/> instance, which helps /// to combine several DOM edits into a single transaction, which /// can be undone and redone as if they were a single, atomic operation. /// </summary> /// <returns>A <see cref="IEditorTransaction"/> instance.</returns> IEditorTransaction createEditorTransaction(); /// <exclude/> [EditorBrowsable(EditorBrowsableState.Never)] void debugDumpBlocks(TextWriter output); This successfully removes the method from the API documentation, and from Intellisense. • session is lost after successful login?

  greetings all um using spring security 3.0.2,all the application pages are secured to see them you must be authenticated um using https protocol i have a strange problem that after successful login and got to the requested page when try to open any link to other pages in the application the session is invalidated or lost or what happened i don't know and the user become anonymous,and redirected to the login page and i got this from debugging: No HttpSession currently exists No SecurityContext was available from the HttpSession: null. A new one will be created. after reviewing the coe many times,nothing in the code is invalidating the session,any ideas why something like this might happen?

  I have developed a web application (ASP.NET Web Forms). One of my customer has very restrictive policies. When he accesses the web page, IE shows this message: Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. As far as I know, we don't use ActiveX controls on our page. I did a "View Souce" and did not find anything suspect. How can I find what part of my page refers to an ActiveX. The application uses jQuery and a few jQuery plug-ins. Is there a tool/add-in like "Fire Bug" that I can use to list the ActiveX controls referred on a page?

• Android-iPhone single codebase

  Is there a way, apart from using HTML and JavaScript on a web control, to have an (almost) single codebase for an application that should run on iOS and Android? The big issue is of course that they use a different language (Java for Android, Objective-C for iOS) for application development. It would be nice to have some sort of meta-language that will be translated in Java and in Objective-C. What about Flash? Adobe wasn't supposed to release a tool to create flash-based apps in iOS?

• Approaches to wrapping access to functionality in .NET MVC?

  What are some different solutions to wrapping access to functionality within a .NET MVC application? For example, I have six tabs that represent different areas of the application and within area 1, there is the ability to add, edit, upload, whatever. I need a central way to say: Build some dictionary of what the user can do Wrap tabs, buttons, links, etc, validate the user can access this piece of functionality and show/hide appropriately. I know I can restrict access to actions via action filters and roles, but what about from the UI? Any help would be appreciated. I am sure I am not the only one who has needed to do this, thanks!
