• Multi option step-by-step walkthrough? [closed]

  I'm looking for a service ideally (but script maybe) that would allow me to create a step-by-step walkthrough, customised by options users choose in earlier steps. It is difficult to describe and if there is a better description I could Google for, please let me know! Basically, I want to start with a few options for a user to click on and then change what comes next based on that click and be able to do this through a whole walk through (explaining how to set a service up). As mentioned earlier, if it was a SAAS I could use (in the vein of desk.com) that would be perfect. Thank you and please ask questions if I've described it poorly!

Specifically I'm trying to choose between: // Option 1. Create new local variable with :=, assign with = foo := 1 foo = 2 // Option 2. Create new local variable with =, assign with := foo = 1 foo := 2 Creating functions will use = regardless: // Indentation delimits blocks square x = x * x And assignment to compound objects will do likewise: sky.color = blue a[i] = 0 Which of options 1 or 2 would people find most convenient/least surprising/otherwise best?

• Recommended certification to join in a game development internship [on hold]

  I'm Brazilian and I'll go to California in July 2014 to study for 1 year and I'm intending to get a winter internship in the game development industry. I'm a programmer since 2008 and I know C#, PHP, Java, Python and a bit of Perl. My question is: do you know any certified required (or helpful) to get a winter job as a game developer? I have no problem to learn new languages, I'm thinking to get a C or C++ certified because I'm not sure about which is the most used language, but before to start a study marathon to take a certification, I have to choose the language and the certification itself. Can you help me, and is that a valid question?

• Which programming language to develop software for USC that also runs on other OS?? (WINDOWS/OSX)

  I have skills in JAVA and C#: First i had a closer look to JAVA (Eclipse with Windowbuilder-Plugin) - Swing: But there is no natvie GUI-Support for GTK3 (e.g., HUD seems not to work) Then i was at JAVA - SWT: It is to heavy. I want do code a small app that improves the Ubuntu desktop. I don't want to ship a program with eclipse included. After that i found C# Mono (Monodevelop): GTK-shparp is only for GTK2 available. A GTK3-port will come soon but is it possible to convert the program from GTK2 to GTK3 without extra adaptations? The next bad thing is, that MONO is now dropped from Ubuntu LTS 12.04. So i have no chance that my app would be a default-app in an Ubuntu-Image. (This is also a factor for me to choose a programming language). I know there are other techs but i want to use as programing language JAVA or C#.

• Ubuntu GUI crash when LightDM enters, unable to login

  This issue happened spounteniously, i don´t know what could have cause it as i wasn´t using the PC when it happened. I ruled out any messing around with the setting as the user doesn´t know how to enter the BIOS, doesn´t have the sudo password and was only using firefox and libreoffice when it happened. The issue persist after rebooting. I choose the other options to see if anything happens, i either get back to option 1 or doesn´t show anything anormal. (I have pictures i someone wants to know) What i found weird is that event though the error is possitioned in the chip, however ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04 run fine in a live CD I saw that some people are having issues when LightDM has a non default wallpaper, but i use a default one. • Checksum Transformation

  The Checksum Transformation computes a hash value, the checksum, across one or more columns, returning the result in the Checksum output column. The transformation provides functionality similar to the T-SQL CHECKSUM function, but is encapsulated within SQL Server Integration Services, for use within the pipeline without code or a SQL Server connection. As featured in The Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit by Joy Mundy and Warren Thornthwaite from the Kimbal Group. Have a look at the book samples especially Sample package for custom SCD handling. All input columns are passed through the transformation unaltered, those selected are used to generate the checksum which is passed out through a single output column, Checksum. This does not restrict the number of columns available downstream from the transformation, as columns will always flow through a transformation. The Checksum output column is in addition to all existing columns within the pipeline buffer. The Checksum Transformation uses an algorithm based on the .Net framework GetHashCode method, it is not consistent with the T-SQL CHECKSUM() or BINARY_CHECKSUM() functions. The transformation does not support the following Integration Services data types, DT_NTEXT, DT_IMAGE and DT_BYTES. ChecksumAlgorithm Property There ChecksumAlgorithm property is defined with an enumeration. It was first added in v1.3.0, when the FrameworkChecksum was added. All previous algorithms are still supported for backward compatibility as ChecksumAlgorithm.Original (0). Original - Orginal checksum function, with known issues around column separators and null columns. This was deprecated in the first SQL Server 2005 RTM release. FrameworkChecksum - The hash function is based on the .NET Framework GetHash method for object types. This is based on the .NET Object.GetHashCode() method, which unfortunately differs between x86 and x64 systems. For that reason we now default to the CRC32 option. CRC32 - Using a standard 32-bit cyclic redundancy check (CRC), this provides a more open implementation. The component is provided as an MSI file, however to complete the installation, you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox by hand. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component?, just select Checksum from the SSIS Data Flow Items list in the Choose Toolbox Items window. Downloads The Checksum Transformation is available for SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008 (includes R2) and SQL Server 2012. Please choose the version to match your SQL Server version, or you can install multiple versions and use them side by side if you have more than one version of SQL Server installed. • Ubuntu on a virtual machine

  I've installed Virtual Box and am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 from a downloaded ISO. Everything is going fine but I come to a choice that says no operating system is dectected on this machine, what would you like to do? 1)Erase disk and install Ubuntu (this will erase any files on the disk) or 2) Something else (choose partition size, multiple partitions, etc). Does the first option mean erase all files on the VIRTUAL DISK--NOT THE COMPUTER? Is it just talking about the virtual machine or if I select this option will it erase my Windows operating system and other files on my hard drive?

• mocha testing for the lazies, single key-press for all possible tests

  I have a batch file that lists all the test files I have and asks me which test I want to perform, like Test. [U]nit, [I]ntegration : i (user input) Integration. [A]ll, [2][U]serInteraction, [3][R]esultGeneration : u 2 User Interaction. Running "mocha integration\2userint.js" ... So essentially I have configured a batch "option" for each test file I have, which I can choose to run individually or all together. But adding and removing tests is a pain. Is there something that does this or anything like this automatically? Like reads all the files and asks me which file(s) I want to test. A GUI with checkboxes would be ultimate! but I'll take anything. I'm working in node.js

• Why are most GNU's software written in C

  I am a Java developer, and I rarely write GUI program in C. However, I noticed that many GNU's projects, such as PSPP, R, Dia, etc., are written in C, instead of Java or C++. I personally don't mind this, but I am really curious why GNU favors C so much. My understanding is that C is the one that supports the least in object-oriented programming, and today's CS education really emphasizes OOP, as OOP really makes codes more reusable. In this case, why would so many developers choose to develop in C instead of C++ or Java. Does anyone know why GNU's software are so exclusively written in C? Do you think or GNU's software should be written in C++ or Java so that the source code could be more useful to people? Why or why not?

• Design virtual resolution for 2D development in Unity

  I came to Unity with Cocos2D experience in mind. In Cocos2D, I can choose a "virtual" screen resolution size to rely on the entire game during development and the game will automatically adapt to different screen sizes in various devices. Now that I'm migrating to Unity and has access to 4.3 beta which has a native 2D workflow, is there a similar mechanism that will automate this? After playing around a bit with Unity, I also found out that Unity uses a neutral coordinate unit that can translate to pixels flexibly (CMIIW). But when developing a 2D game, I need them in pixels. Thank you.

• 3D BSP rendering for maps made in 2d platform style

  I wish to render a 3D map which is always seen from top, camera is in sky and always looking at earth. Sample of a floor layout: I don't think I need complex structures like BSP trees to render them. I mean I can divide the map in grids and render them like done in 2D platform games. I just want to know if this is a good idea and what may go wrong if I don't choose a BSP tree rendering here. Please also mention is any better known rendering techniques are available for such situations.

• 12.10 does not boot sometimes from the hard drive, but it does consistently from the CD

  I have recently switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.10. I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 and I cleared everything from my computer, but it randomly stops at different screens. Only a purple screen comes up. I can choose Ubuntu from a list and a blinking white dot appears in the top left corner. The previous things happen and the Ubuntu login screen appears an I can log in. It is random. and I have not changed anything. I can always insert the bootable CD and it will work every time.

• How to recover data from a drive that was erased during the Ubuntu installation?

  Yesterday I had two NTFS partitions on my drive. One on which Windows 7 was installed (C Drive) and the other contained my data (D Drive). During Ubuntu installation I choose to install Ubuntu and erase my existing OS. When Ubuntu installed, I was shocked to see no partition. All my data was gone. I must have done something wrong in selecting my option during installation. Is there any way I can recover my D Drive? Thanks in advance.

• Developing a new complex travel website

It needs to interface to our inventory to take the conference facility, hotel rooms etc. out of inventory once a contract has been signed (e-signature) and deposit paid. • "Unable to install initrd-tools" error during installation.

  Was trying to install Ubuntu from a CD on a machine which already has windows on it, choose the option of "Resize IDE1 master (hda) and use freed space" during the "Install the base system" step. After that i get the error: Unable to install initrd-tools. An error was returned while trying to install the initrd-tools package into the target system. Check /target/var/log/bootstrap.log for details. The problem is one one hand i cannot proceed with the complete installation and on other hand if i remove the CD, am not able to boot windows as it says No bootable device. Would highly appreciate for any recommendations.

• Multi-platform Map Application

  I'm working on a web project (PHP, jQuery) which currently using Google Maps powering up the map functionality of the application, however we need to make it multi-platform like you can go to the dashboard and choose one from 5-10 map providers (which Goolge Maps is just one of them) to underlying your map functionality. So, as the application is supposed to show the data on map, almost in every single place we have to deal with the API provided by that specific map provider. Currently we are thinking about revising our modular structure and/or making something like an adapter for each provider to deal with their native syntax but via our standard methods. I wish to have your ideas and your experiences, specially if you ever made an interface for dealing via 2-3 different map providers. That would helps much and I really appreciate that. • How to deal with social login

  In my new web app I'm going to allow social login through Twitter (maybe), Facebook and Google and I'm in search of the best way to do it. Actually I'm using Rails with Devise + Omniauth and this is the problem: Should I ask the user to choose a password so that he can login without a social network? Or maybe the user should be able to set a password if he want (for example when editing his account?) The second way seems the best one but since Twitter doesn't provide user email and google doesn't provide an username I'll probably have to ask the user for username/email when he log in so in that case I may also ask for the password... waht do you think?

• Applications Menu disappeared

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, classic desktop without effects. Once the indicator-applet-complete (right part of the top panel) had been disappeared. I found how to fix it: Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, then "Add to the Panel", where choose "Indicator Applet Complete" to add. Now, the left part of the top panel (Applications Menu) has been disappeared! If I do Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, I can add only individual Menu sections like Internet, Office, Settings etc. But how to get back the full Menu as it ought to be?
