• What Poor Project Management Might Be Costing You

  For project-intensive organizations, capital investment decisions define both success and failure. Getting them wrong—the risk of delays and schedule and cost overruns are ever present—introduces the potential for huge financial losses. The resulting consequences can be significant, and directly impact both a company’s profit outlook and its share price performance—which in turn is the fundamental measure of executive performance. This intrinsic link between long-term investment planning and short-term market performance is investigated in the independent report Stock Shock, written by a consultant from Clarity Economics and commissioned by the EPPM Board. A new international steering group organized by Oracle, the EPPM Board brings together senior executives from leading public and private sector organizations to explore the critical role played by enterprise project and portfolio management (EPPM). Stock Shock reviews several high-profile recent project failures, and combined with other research reviews the lessons to be learned. It analyzes how portfolio management is an exercise in balancing risk and reward, a process that places the emphasis firmly on executives to correctly determine which potential investments will deliver the greatest value and contribute most to the bottom line. Conversely, it also details how poor evaluation decisions can quickly impact the overall value of an organization’s project portfolio and compromise long-range capital planning goals. Failure to Deliver—In Search of ROI The report also cites figures from the Economist Intelligence Unit survey that found that more organizations (12 percent) expected to deliver planned ROI less than half the time, than those (11 percent) who claim to deliver it 90 percent or more of the time. • Wammu - USB Device Name?

  I'm trying to get to my phone's filesystem through USB in Wammu, but I'm stuck in the configuration wizard when it asks for a USB device name. After about an hour of Internet searching, here are the failed solutions I've already tried, starting with the relevant information returned by lsusb in terminal. lsusb Bus 001 Device 003: ID 12d1:101e Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. So I tried opening Wammu through sudo wammu in terminal and inputting "/dev/bus/usb/001/003" as the device name, which returns: Error opening device Device /dev/bus/usb/001/003 does not exist! and then "/dev/bus/usb/001/", which returns: Failed to connect to phone Description: Error opening device. Unknown, busy, or no permissions.<br> Function: Init<br> Error code: 2 Another proposed solution was to try "tail -f /var/log/messages" in terminal. But that only returned a "No such file or directory" message. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and the phone is a Huawei U1250. My computer is an Acer Aspire One D250/KAV60. Any help is much appreciated.

• How can I check Internet connectivity in a console?

  Is there an easy way to check Internet connectivity from console? I am trying to play around in a shell script. One idea I seem is to wget --spider http://www.google.co.in/ and check the HTTP response code to interpret if the Internet connection is working fine. But I think there must be easy way without the need of checking a site that never crash ;) Edit: Seems like there can be a lot of factors which can be individually examined, good thing. My intention at the moment is to check if my blog is down. I have setup cron to check it every minute. For this, I am checking the HTTP response code of wget --spider to my blog. If its not 200, it notifies me (I believe this will be better than just pinging it, as the site may under be heavy load and may be timing out or respond very late). Now yesterday, there was some problem with my Internet. LAN was connected fine but just I couldn't access any site. So I keep on getting notifications as the script couldn't find 200 in the wget response. Now I want to make sure that it displays me notification when I do have internet connectivity. So, checking for DNS and LAN connectivity is a bit overkill for me as I don't have that much specific need to figure out what problem it is. So what do you suggest how I do it?

  I had hoped to get my hands on a copy at OpenWorld, but it wasn't available yet from the printers.  But it's coming soon: The Oracle Fusion Applications Development and Extensibility Handbook. • Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web ICT: second draft published from WCAG2ICT Task Force - for public review

  Last Thursday the W3C published an updated Working Draft of Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies. As I noted last July when the first draft was published, the motivation for this guidance comes from the Section 508 refresh draft, and also the European Mandate 376 draft, both of which seek to apply the WCAG 2.0 level A and AA Success Criteria to non-web ICT documents and software. This second Working Draft represents a major step forward in harmonization with the December 5th, 2012 Mandate 376 draft documents, including specifically Draft EN 301549 "European accessibility requirements for public procurement of ICT products and services". This work greatly increases the likelihood of harmonization between the European and American technical standards for accessibility, for web sites and web applications, non-web documents, and non-web software. As I noted last October at the European Policy Centre event: "The Accessibility Act – Ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and again last month at the follow-up EPC event: "Accessibility - From European challenge to global opportunity", "There isn't a 'German Macular Degernation', a 'French Cerebral Palsy', an 'American Autism Spectrum Disorder'. Disabilities are part of the human condition. They’re not unique to any one country or geography – just like ICT. Even the built environment – phones, trains and cars – is the same worldwide. The definition of ‘accessible’ should be global – and the solutions should be too. Harmonization should be global, and not just EU-wide. It doesn’t make sense for the EU to have a different definition to the US or Japan." With these latest drafts from the W3C and Mandate 376 team, we've moved a major step forward toward that goal of a global "definition of 'accessible' ICT." I strongly encourage all interested parties to read the Call for Review, and to submit comments during the current review period, which runs through 15 February 2013. • Integrating with Oracle Fusion Applications: Discovering Integration Artifacts

  Oracle Enterprise Repository serves as the core element to the Oracle SOA Governance solution. An industry-leading metadata repository, Oracle Enterprise Repository provides a solid foundation for delivering governance throughout the service-oriented architecture (SOA) lifecycle by acting as the single source of truth for information surrounding SOA assets and their dependencies. For Fusion Applications, the use of OER has been extended to include other integration asset types such as interface tables and other technical information such as data models, tables, views, lookups, profile options, et cetera. E-Business Suite users familiar with iRepository or eTRM will recognize the functionality in Fusion Applications OER. Oracle Enterprise Repository for Fusion Applications provides a common catalog of technical information, searchable using many different mechanisms. Customers can locate technical information by the name, description or keyword of the information they are looking for. They can also search by the type of asset they are trying to locate and/or where the asset sits in the product taxonomy. They can also see the how the asset dances in the choreography of some illustrative co-existence scenarios. These scenarios are laid out as both functional flow diagrams as well as technical interaction diagrams. Rajesh Raheja, software architect at Oracle, has recently posted an article on this topic: visibility and control are the key tenets to SOA governance, and the first step in integrating with Oracle Fusion Applications is to find out what are the integration options available. • Where to put code documentation?

  I am currently using two systems to write code documentation (am using C++): Documentation about methods and class members are added next to the code, using the Doxygen format. On a server Doxygen is run on the sources so the output can be seen in a web browser Overview pages (describing a set of classes, the structure of the application, example code, ...) is added to a Wiki I personally think that this approach is easy because the documentation about members and classes is really close to the code, while the overview pages are really easy to edit in the Wiki (and it's also easy to add images, tables, ...). A web browser allows you to see both documentations. My co-worker now suggests to put everything in Doxygen, because we can then create one big help file with everything in it (using either Microsoft's HTML WorkShop or Qt Assistant). My concern is that editing Doxygen-style documentation is much harder (compared to Wiki), especially when you want to add tables, images, ... (or is there a 'preview' tool for Doxygen that doesn't require you to generate the code before you can see the result?) What do big open-source (or closed source) projects use to write their code documentation? Do they also split this up between Doxygen-style and a Wiki? Or do they use another system? What is the most appropriate way to expose the documentation? Via a Web server/browser, or via a big (several 100MB) help file? Which approach do you take when writing code documentation?

• Stop YOUR emails from starting those company-wide Reply All email threads

  You know you’ve seen it before; somebody sends out a company-wide email (or email to a large diverse audience), and a couple people or small group of people start replying-all back to the email with info/jokes that is only relative to that small group of people, yet EVERYBODY on the original email list has to suffer their inbox filling up with what is essentially spam since it doesn’t pertain to them or is something they don’t care about. A co-worker of mine made an ingenious off-hand comment to me one day of how to avoid this, and I’ve been using it ever since.  Simply place the email addresses of everybody that you are sending the email to in the BCC field (not the CC field), and in the TO field put your email address.  So everybody still gets the email, and they are easily able to reply back to you about it.  Note though, that the people you send the email to will not be able to see everyone else that you sent it to. Obviously you might not want to use this ALL the time; there are some times when you want a group discussion to occur over email.  But for those other times, such as when sending a NWR email about the car you are selling, asking everyone what a good local restaurant near by is, collecting personal info from people, or sharing a handy program or trick you learnt about (such as this one ), this trick can save everybody frustration and avoid wasting their time.  Trust me, your coworkers will thank you; mine did

• Spotlight on an ACE: Edwin Biemond

  Edwin Biemond is an active member of the ACE community, having worked with Oracle's development tooling and database technologies since 1997. Since then, Edwin has become an expert in many of Oracle's middleware technologies as well, including WebLogic and SOA. In fact, Edwin has become so prolfic that he was named the Java Developer of the Year in 2009. Edwin hails from the Netherlands, where he is an architect at the company Amis, and is also a co-author of the OSB Development Cookbook. He's a proven expert in ADF, JSF, messaging (Edifact / ebXML), Enterprise Service Bus, web services and tuning of application servers and databases. Recently, Edwin posted a blog on the road map of WebLogic 12c, going over salient features and what the future looks like for Fusion Middleware and the Application Server areas - it's well worth a read, so give it a look. A snippet: WebLogic 12.1.3 will be the first version for many FMW 12c products like Oracle SOA Suite 12c and probably come in one big jar. 12.1.3 & 12.1.4 will add extra features and improvements to Elastic JMS & Dynamic Clusters. Elastic JMS in 12.1.3 will support Server Migration so you can’t lose any JMS messages. In 12.1.4, Dynamic Clusters will have support for auto-scaling based on thresholds based on user-defined metrics. WebLogic 12.1.4 will also have an API to control the Dynamic Clusters, this way we can easily program when to stop, start or remove nodes from a dynamic cluster. • Supporting copy 'n paste in your Windows Phone app

  Some Windows Phone 7 owners already have the NoDo update, and others are getting it soon. This update brings, among other things, copy & paste support for text boxes. The user taps on a piece of text (and can drag in either direction to select more/less words), a popup icon appears that when tapped copies the text to the clipboard, and then at any app that shows the soft input panel there is an icon option to paste the copied text into the associated textbox. For more read this 'how to'. Note that there is no programmatic access to the clipboard, only the end user experience I just summarized, so there is nothing you need to do for your app's textboxes to support copy & paste: it just works. The only issue may be if in your app you use static TextBlock controls, for which the copy support will not appear, of course. That was the case with my Translator by Moth app where the translated text appears in a TextBlock. So, I wanted the user to be able to copy directly from the translated text (without offering an editable TextBox for an area where user input does not make sense). Take a look at a screenshot of my app before I made any changes to it. I then made changes to it preserving the look and feel, yet with additional copy support (see screenshot on the right)! So how did I achieve that? • How to explain a layperson why a developer should not be interrupted while neck-deep in coding?

  If you just consider the second part of my question, "Why a developer should not be interrupted while neck-deep in coding", that has been discussed a number of times by smart people. Heck, even the co-founder of SO, Joel Spolsky, wrote a blog post about "getting in the zone" and "being knocked out of the zone" and why it takes an average of 15 minutes to achieve productivity when participating in complex, software development related tasks. So I think the why has been established. What I'm interested in is how to explain all that to somebody who doesn't know beans about Beans (khmm I mean software development). How to tell the wife, or the funny guy from accounting at the workplace, or the long time friend who pings you on Skype every 30 minutes with a "Wazzzzzzup?!", that all the interruptions have a much deeper impact on your work than the obvious 30 seconds they took from your time. Obviously you can't explain it by sentences like "I have to juggle a lot of variable names in my short term memory" unless you want to be the target of blank stares or friendly abuse. I'd like to be able to explain all that to non-developers in a way that will make them clearly understand - without being offensive, elitist or too technical.

• When to use http status code 404

  I am working on a project and after arguing with people at work for about more than a hour. I decided to know what people on stack-exchange might say. We're writing an API for a system, there is a query that should return a tree of Organization or a tree of Goals. The tree of Organization is the organization in which the user is present, In other words, this tree should always exists. In the organization, a tree of goal should be always present. (that's where the argument started). In case where the tree doesn't exist, my co-worker decided that it would be right to answer response with status code 200. And then started asking me to fix my code because the application was falling apart when there is no tree. I'll try to spare flames and fury. I suggested to raise a 404 error when there is no tree. It would at least let me know that something is wrong. When using 200, I have to add special check to my response in the success callback to handle errors. I'm expecting to receive an object, but I may actually receive an empty response because nothing is found. It sounds totally fair to mark the response as a 404. And then war started and I got the message that I didn't understand HTTP status code schema. So I'm here and asking what's wrong with 404 in this case? I even got the argument "It found nothing, so it's right to return 200". I believe that it's wrong since the tree should be always present. If we found nothing and we are expecting something, it should be a 404. Extra Also, I believe the best answer to the problem is to create default objects when organizations are created, having no tree shouldn't be a valid case and should be seen as an undefined behavior. There is no way an account can be used without both trees. For that reasons, they should be always present.

  I've got two speaking gigs in the next few weeks, so I thought I'd preview both here. First I'll be at eTail West on February 24th to talk about mobile. I'll be previewing a new study of how shoppers are using mobile phones. Here's a sneak peek at one of the slides: It should be no surprise that as more consumers adopt smartphones, more are finding ways to use them to help with shopping. Sometimes that's to find a store, download a coupon, or do price comparisons. I'll also be discussing the NRF Mobile Blueprint, and will walk through an example of mobile impacting the in-store experience. Retailers need to look upon mobile as the method of bringing the digital assets of e-commerce into the aisles to enhance shopping. On March 9th I'll be at NRF Innovate co-presenting with Jon Kubo of Wet Seal on social strategies. Jon is a retail innovation rock-star and I always learn something new from every conversation with him. Below is a another slide preview: I cheated a little on the top 10 most popular retailer pages by not including Victoria's Secret Pink. VC is already represented, so I didn't include them a second time. The most interesting statistic I found was that the average user spends 55 minutes on Facebook a day. Wow! I also decided to use the old "Like" and "Fan" icons just because I like them better (pun intended). • Google authorship verification issue

  I'm trying to get my blog content author verified so my face gets into the Google search results. I managed to achieve this a few weeks back - When testing my content in the Google authorship testing tool it reported that I had been verified and I could see my mug in the results. All I had to do was wait a couple of weeks before I started popping up in the search results (I think(?)). However, I seem to have thrown a spanner in the works. I set up Google apps for my domain and merged my old Google+ profile into my google apps account. This seemed to reset my Google+ profile (no biggy, since it was a new profile and only had 1 connection). I re-set up my G+ account and tied it all in to my blog and it's content. I am now seeing some very strange behaviour. If you take a look at one of my blog posts through the snippet testing tool: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.fraser-hart.co.uk%2Fjquery-fullscreen-background-slideshow%2F&html= You will see that it is not recognising me as an author. However, when you enter my profile URL (https://plus.google.com/108765138229426105004) into the "Authorship verification by email" input, you will see that it does in fact recognise it as verified. Now, if you try and verify the same page again, it reverts back to unverified. I thought I may have to just wait it out but this has been over a week now and previously (before I merged my profile) it happened instantaneously. Has anyone experienced this bizarre behaviour before? What is happening here? More importantly, is there anything I can do to resolve it? (Apologies for the long and boring question). Cheers!

• Microsoft ADO.NET 4 Step by Step

I still think that in the plethora of new data access technologies that have come out since, the basic core ADO.NET fundamentals are still every developer must know, and sadly they do not know. So for some crazy reason, I still see every project make the same data access related mistakes over and over again. Anyway, the challenge is that on top of the core ADO.NET fundamentals, there is a vast array of other new technologies you must learn. The important of which is Entity Framework. So, I was asked to, and I was pleased to be the technical reviewer for Microsoft ADO.NET 4, Step by Step, by Tim Patrick. This book introduces the reader not just to the basic ADO.NET principles, but also Entity Framework, LINQ to SQL, and WCF Data Services. So what you may ask is a SharePoint guy like me doing with such interest in ADO.NET land? Well, that’s what the other side says, what is a hardcore data access sorta guy doing in SharePoint land? :). I have authored/co-authored 4 books so far on data access (1,2,3,4), and one on pure SharePoint, and now one on SharePoint 2010 BI. These are very intertwined topics. And LINQ to SQL and LINQ to SharePoint are almost copy paste of each other. WCF Data services are literally the same in both. And many Entity Framework concepts also apply within SharePoint. • Allow access to WordPress site only by links in email newsletters

  I send out a personal email newsletter, and have been looking into sending it via some service like MailChimp, or sendy.co. Many of these email services suggest, or require, the email newsletter content to be available online, in case the recipient's email app doesn't render it properly, or at all. The thing is I don't want my newsletter contents visible to the whole world. Nor do I want to require existing recipients to make accounts/be assigned accounts, with passwords. So, the question is: How can my WordPress site content be viewable only by clicking on the link to it in the email newsletter. It can't be found in a Google search; but once at the site the visitor can view previous newsletter contents. It seems an .htaccess file would do the trick, but I have been unable to figure out the syntax for this. Thanks for your help. I have copied below two other questions, and answers, which have helped me word my question clearly. • How to install Wacom Bamboo Pen

  I have a new Wacom Bamboo Pen. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. After googling a little bit, I checked that xserver-xorg-input-wacom was installed. I plugged in my tablet. I rebooted my computer. Nothing special happened. I opened Inkscape. The tablet didn't work. I opened Inkscape's Input devices dialog. I didn't understand anything. I tried to blindly click some options in that dialog but nothing seemed to have any effect. Same with Gimp. After googling some more I found the linuxwacom website with source code, this didn't seem to work. So... any help?
