• What is the best way to work with large databases in Java depending on context?

  We are trying to figure out the best practice for working with very large DBs in Java. What we do is a kind of BI (business Intelligence), i.e analyzing very large DBs, and using them to create intermediate DBs that represent intelligent knowledge of the DBs. We are currently using JDBC, and just preforming queries using a ResultSet. As more and more data is being created, we are wondering whether more appropriate ways exist for parsing and manipulating these large DBs: We need to support 'chunk' manipulation and not an entire DB at once(e.g. limit in JDBC, very poor performance) We do not need to be constantly connected since we are just pulling results and creating new tables of our own. We want to understand JDBC alternatives, with respect to advantages and disadvantages. Whether you think JDBC is the way to go or not, what are the best practices to go by depending on context (e.g. for large DBs queried in chunks)?

• How to "undo" (revert) Ctrl+L?

  I'm on 12.04 Desktop. When browsing the file system, it's convenient to type Ctrl+L so as to get the file path "Location" to render as a string; I can then modify the file path or even paste something in and get redirected right where I want to go. But often, after typing Ctrl+L, I find myself wanting to revert back to the normal way Nautilus renders the file path (as a series of buttons/links). What's the magical shortcut to "undo" Ctrl+L and go back to "normal mode"? Thanks in advance!

• Can't cancel the lubuntu shutdown screen

  I've bought a small 5 year old small netbook. I noticed that lubuntu runs great on it, as it doesn't use much space/resources. But the problem is, my screen is just too small. Whenever I press the shutdown icon, I go to the shutdown, logout, restart, ect panel but the cancel button is tucked away right where my screen seems to end. I can't go back, it forces me to use an option besides canceling, which I can't reach with my mouse.Is there any way to change this so I get access to the whole screen. The rest seems to be showing just fine, like the launchbar, which is cleary visible and useable. Another thing that bugs me is that whenever I start up, I get an error along the lines of "conflict detected with stolen region". I read that it has something to do with graphics but I have no idea how to get rid of it. The error doesn't seems to cause any trouble as far as I can see, but it's annoying.

• Is there a way to specify a CSS3 transition to occur only on :hover and when returning from hover, not on every event? [closed]

  You could define the transition on the :hover event, which causes the browser to render only the effect into the hover and not out of it. a:hover { transition... } Using scale as an example, an image being scaled up would scale up on hover, but go straight back down without any transition when the cursor leaves the image. Or, you can set the transition on the element directly: a { transition... } Which by definition means any change that effects the scale of the element such as any developer set styles will work, but also the user zooming in and out the page, will cause there to be a transition. All the tutorials being spewed onto the internet at the moment point to using the latter, but wouldn't one consider this a usability flaw for anyone wanting to resize the page or taking any other action that may cause similar scenarios? Pages with large amounts of transitional hover scaling can go pretty mental if you zoom in and out of them.

  I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu or Linux, but I'm a programmer, and some people told me that you can just go ahead and modify your system. So my question is, how do you go on about that? For instance, If I'm interested in modifying the behavior of the button or the desktop icons, or whatever it is: How do I get the source code? I guess I need the package name and download it. But how can I get the package name? Let's say I want the button package, where do I look to get the package name? is there a list on a website or a help file? • Would you see any use of a Trilean (True, False, ??)

  I don't know if I'm alone but sometimes I have a function that should return true or false. But in some case there would be a third result that would make more sense. In some language theses cases would be handled with integers or with exception. For exemple you want to handle the age of a user if he is over 18 years old. And you have a function like this. if(user.isAdult(country_code)){ //Go On }else{ // Block access or do nothing } But in some case depending how your app is built I could see case where the birthday field is incomplete. Then this function should return something undetermined. switch(user.isAdult()){ case true: // go on break; case undetermined: //Inform user birthday is incomplete case false: //Block access } As i said we can handle that with Exceptions and Int, but I would find it quite sexy to have a true, false, undetermined embeded in the language instead of using some home defined constants.

• Is it bad practice to run Node.js and apache in parallel?

  I have an idea in mind and would like to know if that's the way to go for my end application. Think of my application as a social networking system in which I want to implement chat functionality. For that, I'd like to push data from the server to the client. I have heard I could use Node.js for that. In the meanwhile, I want a 'regular' system for posting status updates and such, for which I'd like to use PHP and an apache server. The only way I can think of is having Node.js and apache running parallel. But is that the way to go here? I'd think there would be a somewhat neater solution for this.

  It’s finally here: the Kindle app for Windows Phone 7! Finally we can have our books on the go as well! It’s not sitting atop the “new” list on the WP7 marketplace though. I had to go to the Books section of the marketplace, and there its set to the top spot of free apps. I’m going to read the next chapter in my current book on it to see what the experience is like. After playing quickly with it, here’s some observations: - You flip pages going left to right, not up and down. No setting to change this if you don’t like it. - Good options for changing font size, background colour, and setting bookmarks. - *No* option for highlighting though. However, previous highlights do show up and you can review notes made in other programs Still, for a free Kindle reader and the ability to catch up on books wherever on the phone, so far so good!

In my method I have two ways to pass filters. Pass all filters as params to the method Make a class StudentCriteria with filters as fields and then pass the object of this class While working in java I always go with the second option but recently I'm working in php and I was advised to go with the first way. I am unable to figure out which way is better in maintaining the code, reusability and performance wise. Thanks.

Motivation: I often go ??? mode when I see how low LoC/ day i produce(Im new to the my current language and Im part of the big project, but still..) and I would like to know how bad I am. :) If you are gonna warn me that LoC is a terrible measure I agree, but it is most exact one in a sense that I cant go and write 0.01% of Chrome or IE and say it took me this long so....

You know something is supposed to work some way but just doesn't. You tried a number of things to solve it but isn't helping and you are not sure why. I once remember being stuck hours at programming job. Eventually I figured out for some reason or other my IDE wasn't recompiling my new changes in some of the classes .This is just an example but I am sure most you have faced similar situation. So how would you go about solving it if you didn't have access to Google or Stack Exchange? Lets be honest, using internet you aren't solving the problem, somebody else is doing it for you.   I am trying to create a form for my companies intraNet site. The idea is as follows: An employee wants to make a purchase, so they will go to the appropriate page in the intraNet They will fill out the form on the intraNet page They click the email button The data in the form is saved in a database, and an email is sent to me stating that there is purchase order request form filled out I am not exactly sure how to go about this. Part of me wants to create it in a Data Access Page but I am not sure that's correct. If there is no one here who can help, is there anyone who can direct me to someone/something that can help me?

• "Launch Failed. Binary Not Found." Snow Leopard and Eclipse C/C++ IDE issue.

  Not a question, I've just scoured the internet in search of a solution for this problem and thought I'd share it with the good folks of SO. I'll put it in plain terms so that it's accessible to newbs. :) (Apologies if this is the wrong place -- just trying to be helpful.) This issue occurs with almost any user OS X Snow Leopard who tries to use the Eclipse C/C++ IDE, but is particularly annoying for the people (like me) who were using the Eclipse C/C++ IDE in Leopard, and were unable to work with Eclipse anymore when they upgraded. The issue occurs When users go to build/compile/link their software. They get the following error: Launch Failed. Binary Not Found. Further, the "binaries" branch in the project window on the left is simply nonexistent. THE PROBLEM: is that GCC 4.2 (the GNU Compiler Collection) that comes with Snow Leopard compiles binaries in 64-bit by default. Unfortunately, the linker that Eclipse uses does not understand 64-bit binaries; it reads 32-bit binaries. There may be other issues here, but in short, they culminate in no binary being generated, at least not one that Eclipse can read, which translates into Eclipse not finding the binaries. Hence the error. One solution is to add an -arch i686 flag when making the file, but manually making the file every time is annoying. Luckily for us, Snow Leopard also comes with GCC 4.0, which compiles in 32 bits by default. So one solution is merely to link this as the default compiler. This is the way I did it. THE SOLUTION: The GCCs are in /usr/bin, which is normally a hidden folder, so you can't see it in the Finder unless you explicitly tell the system that you want to see hidden folders. Anyway, what you want to do is go to the /usr/bin folder and delete the path that links the GCC command with GCC 4.2 and add a path that links the GCC command with GCC 4.0. In other words, when you or Eclipse try to access GCC, we want the command to go to the compiler that builds in 32 bits by default, so that the linker can read the files; we do not want it to go to the compiler that compiles in 64 bits. The best way to do this is to go to Applications/Utilities, and select the app called Terminal. A text prompt should come up. It should say something like "(Computer Name):~ (Username)$ " (with a space for you user input at the end). The way to accomplish the tasks above is to enter the following commands, entering each one in sequence VERBATIM, and pressing enter after each individual line. cd /usr/bin rm cc gcc c++ g++ ln -s gcc-4.0 cc ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc ln -s c++-4.0 c++ ln -s g++-4.0 g++ Like me, you will probably get an error that tells you you don't have permission to access these files. If so, try the following commands instead: cd /usr/bin sudo rm cc gcc c++ g++ sudo ln -s gcc-4.0 cc sudo ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc sudo ln -s c++-4.0 c++ sudo ln -s g++-4.0 g++ Sudo may prompt you for a password. If you've never used sudo before, try just pressing enter. If that doesn't work, try the password for your main admin account. OTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS You may be able to enter build variables into Eclipse. I tried this, but I don't know enough about it. If you want to feel it out, the flag you will probably need is -arch i686. In earnest, GCC-4.0 worked for me all this time, and I don't see any reason to switch now. There may be a way to alter the default for the compiler itself, but once again, I don't know enough about it. Hope this has been helpful and informative. Good coding!

• receiving error #1009 in flash cs4 actionscript3

  I'm having a weird issue where my buttons will work initially and direct me to an appropriate page, but when i go back to that page and try to use the buttons the roll-overs work but none of the buttons direct to a different page. This is the actionscript on the initial page with the buttons. If I choose any of these buttons they work. • Cisco: Site-to-site VPN with cisco 878 and ASA weirdness

  I currently have 2 sites, both connected to each other through 2 firewalls / routers in a site-to-site VPN. Pinging from server to server (Using 2mb/2mb SDSL) through that VPN obviously works, however, at one site, we have another internet connection (7m/400k ADSL), and only the link between the two sites should be on the other connection. All pc's should go over the other connection for internet, just communication between servers & Communication between pc's and the server at the other side should go through there too. What is configured at the moment is the server is using the SDSL directly as default gateway. Since it's not intended to surf anything it is a safe config. PC's are configured on the ADSL as default gateway. Now I wanted to route through everything that uses the range used on the other site, it should be sent from the ADSL modem to the SDSL modem, which has the VPN connection. I figured I could use OSPF to do so, however, OSPF doesn't seem to "detect" the range of the external site. Also (due to bad ip subnetting thanks to the other administrator), the ip used internally as the server on the other site also exists on the internet (causing a lot of confusion), so rdp-ing from our server to the server of the other site works (somehow), but tracerouting on the SDSL router (which should actually, in my opinion, go over the VPN) actually goes all over the internet. My question(s): Why doesn't the SDSL router ping the external ip through VPN, but the server does? Why can't I route from the ADSL router to the SDSL over VPN? I would seriously appreciate some help, since I can't figure out why it does it like this.

• Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. • Mount points disappear from network share directory listing

  When browsing a network share which contains volume mount points, said mount points disappear from the directory listing. The mount points are still accessible directly by path, just not present in the directory listing. The machine is a Vista SP1 32 bit machine. It has a network share that contains volume mount points to the volumes of the Vista machine (created using the SetVolumeMountPoint API). When browsing the network share from another computer (either Win7 64 bit, Win7 32 bit or Vista SP1 32 bit) using Windows Explorer the following problem occurs: First, both volume mount points called C, D appear fine. I browse into directory C and see all its contents properly. I go back to the root of the shared folder and now I only see D. C has disappeared from the directory listing. I enter D and see all its contents. Go back to the root of the shared folder and now it's empty. D disappeared as well. If I manually go to \\<path to shared folder>\C from the address bar - then all is fine and I can browse its contents (same with D). The same issue does NOT occur when creating a similar share with volume mount points on Windows XP SP2 or SP3. Has anyone came across this problem? Any ideas how to work around it?

• Apache > 2.2.22 rewrite rule not working?

  since yesterday I'm trying to figure out how to fix the following: running phpipam (http://www.phpipam.net/) with WAMP (Windows environment). The problem I am facing is related with RewriteRule functionality, so forget phpipam for a moment and concentrate on few lines of code. Here is the directory structure of my test website that emulate the first steps phpipam does (you can download http://goo.gl/ksvuGc): C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst\ C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst\.htaccess C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst\index.php C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst\install C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst\install\index.php It seems that the following rewrite rule in .htaccess doesn't work: C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst\.htaccess # install RewriteRule ^install$ install/ [R] RewriteRule ^install/$ index.php?page=install When opening C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst\index.php the first step check the URL for "install" argument. Since the URL is: http://localhost/rewrite-tst no arguments are supplied and the browser is redirected to: header("Location: /rewrite-tst/install/") At this point the browser opens the page: C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst\install\index.php >> http://localhost/rewrite-tst/install Apache, thanks to C:\wamp\www\rewrite-tst.htaccess should intercept this URL and redirect to: http://localhost/rewrite-tst/index.php?page=install Here are my tries: Win Apache 2.2.22: works Win Apache 2.4.4: KO Win Apache 2.4.6: KO In the attached zip file you can also find two traces from apache RewriteLog which I can't understand very well.
