• MySQL Not Turning On

  I have an amazon ec2 instance running on the Amazon Linux AMI and its a micro instance. I wanted to install Django onto my server so I entered these commands wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/go wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/django.conf chmod 744 go ./go So after I was done, I ran sudo service httpd restart and sudo service mysqld restart and This is what came up for mysqld: Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] So I deleted the django files /usr/local/python2.6.8/site-packages/django_registration.egg and I tried finding the error and I found out that in my /etc/my.cnf for the socket, it said socket=/var/lock/subsys/mysql.sock so I went to /var/lock/subsys/ and there was no mysql.sock. I tried creating one using vim but it still didn't work. Then I checked the error log and it said Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) So I am pretty much lost right now. I know it has something to do with mysql.sock If you might know a reason why this was caused could you please let me know? I have a wordpress site on my server, so i kind of need MySQL to work. • Using Different Networks with Different Proxy Servers on Windows 7

  Hi, I have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. There are two wireless networks I connect to every day: Home: no proxy server Work: proxy server with authentication On my iPad and iPhone, I've got two WiFi network profiles (one for home, one for work). The work one has the proxy server settings specified. The home one has no proxy specified. It all works great and I don't need to go changing settings around whenever I move from home to work or vice versa. On my laptop, however, I can't seem to get this going. I can certainly connect to both networks, but when I'm at work I have to go and change the proxy settings (in Internet Options) to be able to use the network. When I'm at home, I have to then go and turn them off. It's a small thing, but considering this is something I have to do every day, it's a bit annoying. Is there any way I can make Windows automatically switch proxy settings on or off based on the network I'm connected to? Thanks, John

• Anonymous Login attemps from IPs all over Asia, how do I stop them from being able to do this?

  We had a successful hack attempt from Russia and one of our servers was used as a staging ground for further attacks, actually somehow they managed to get access to a Windows account called 'services'. I took that server offline as it was our SMTP server and no longer need it (3rd party system in place now). Now some of our other servers are having these ANONYMOUS LOGIN attempts in the Event Viewer that have IP addresses coming from China, Romania, Italy (I guess there's some Europe in there too)... I don't know what these people want but they just keep hitting the server. How can I prevent this? I don't want our servers compromised again, last time our host took our entire hardware node off of the network because it was attacking other systems, causing our services to go down which is really bad. How can I prevent these strange IP addresses from trying to access my servers? They are Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 'containers' (virtual machines) running on a Parallels Virtuozzo HW node, if that makes a difference. I can configure each machine individually as if it were it's own server of course... UPDATE: New login attempts still happening, now these ones are tracing back to Ukraine...   Vim has a terrific paste mode, in which abbreviations and mappings are ignored. Frustratingly, even keys that do not map to pastable ASCII characters, such as the function keys, are pasted literally. For instance the key F2 is pasted as <F2>. Is there anyway around this? Note that pastetoggle can in fact be mapped to a function key to easily leave paste mode, however the function that I am writing changes other values when entering or leaving paste mode (such as enabling or disabling line numbers and other things). Therefore I would really like to find a workaround. • empty file from tomcat https redirect?

  I am using tomcat 6.0.20, with jdk 1.6.0_18 on 64 bit linux (tomcat downloaded from tomcat.apache.org, not installed from repositories). I have iptables redirects from port 80 - 8080 and 443 - 8443. In server.xml, the connector for port 8080 redirects to 443, and the 8443 connector has proxyPort="443". In conf/web.xml, I have added this bit at the end of the file (but still inside the <web-app</webapp tags). <security-constraint> <web-resource-collection> <web-resource-name>Protected Context</web-resource-name> <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern> </web-resource-collection> <user-data-constraint> <transport-guarantee>CONFIDENTIAL</transport-guarantee> </user-data-constraint> </security-constraint> I also have two contexts, ROOT and mywebapp. If I go to http://myurl.com, then I get redirected to https://myurl.com. If I go to http://myurl.com/mywebapp/, then I get redirected to https://myurl.com/mywebapp/. The problem I'm having is when I go to http://myurl.com/mywebapp (no trailing slash). When I do this I get a prompt to download an empty file that has an empty name. Going to https://myurl.com/mywebapp works. I would think that a user typing myurl.com/mywebapp is far from rare. Is there something I'm missing?

• 100% CPU when doing 4 or more concurrent requests with Magento

  Currently I'm having trouble with a server running Magento, it's unbelievably slow. It's a VPS with a few Magento installations on it used for development, so I'm the only one using them. When I do 4 request all 2 seconds after each other I'm finished in 10 seconds. Slow, but still within the limits of my patience. When I do 4 "concurrent" requests, however (opening 4 tabs in a row, very quickly) all four cores go to 100% and stay there for like a minute. How is this possible? I know that there are a lot of possibilities here, so any tips on how to make an Apache/PHP server go faster are also welcome. It used to go a lot faster before, and I've also tried APC, but it kept causing problems (PHP errors, something with memory pools) so I've disabled it. By the way, the Magento cache is off and compiling is also off. I know this makes Magento slower than usual, but I don't think a 60 second response time is normal for any Magento installation. Virtual hardware: 4 Cores and 4096MB RAM Swap is never used (checked with htop) 100GB disk space, of which 10% is in use Software: Debian 6 DirectAdmin and apache custombuild PHP 5.2.17 (CLI) If you need more info, please tell me how to get it, because I probably don't know how. I do know how to use the command line in linux and the usage of quite a few commands, but my experience with managing a server is limited.

• Transactions in codeigniter with multiple tables.

  Hey SO, I'm new to transactions in general, but especially with CodeIgniter. I'm using InnoDB and everything, but my transactions aren't rolling back when I want them to. It should roll back at that final trans_rollback right before the commit. My models are all on the "dog" database, so I think that the transaction would carry into the models' functions.   I have Office 2007 and Office 2010 installed side-by-side. How do I stop the setup / configuration window from appearing each time I open a different version? If I open 2007, it will go through the configuration process, then I can use 2007 without issue until I open a 2010 application. Then, when I open any 2010 Office application it will go through the configuration process.

• Index page in Magento is way too slow, what can I do?

  Weirdly, the index page of my magento commerce is very slow, while when you navigate the products, brands, searchs etc is very fast, but everytime you click on the banner to go for home or enter the website, it take ages to load I wonder what can I do about this? I don't know where to start, since I am new at magento. I thought I could go on and read the code, but that would take ages too, since magento is very big. Maybe I can analyze it somehow? • NSObjectController confusion binding to a class property. Help!

  Hi, I'm teaching myself cocoa and enjoying the experience most of the time. I have been struggling all day with a simple problem that google has let me down on. I have read the Cocoa Bindings Program Topics and think I grok it but still can't solve my issue. I have a very simple class called MTSong that has various properties. I have used @synthesize to create getter/setters and can use KVC to change properties. i.e in my app controller the following works: mySong = [[MTSong alloc]init]; [mySong setValue:@"2" forKey:@"version"]; In case I am doing something noddy in my class code MTSong.h is: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> @interface MTSong : NSObject { NSNumber *version; NSString *name; } @property(readwrite, assign) NSNumber *version; @property(readwrite, assign) NSString *name; @end and MTSong.m is: #import "MTSong.h" @implementation MTSong - (id)init { [super init]; return self; } - (void)dealloc { [super dealloc]; } @synthesize version; @synthesize name; @end In Interface Builder I have a label (NSTextField) that I want to update whenever I use KVC to change the version of the song. I do the following: Drag NSObjectController object into the doc window and in the Inspector-Attributes I set: Mode: Class Class Name: MTSong Add a key called version and another called name Go to Inspector-Bindings-Controller Content Bind To: File's Owner (Not sure this is right...) Model Key Path: version Select the cell of the label and go to Inspector Bind to: Object Controller Controller Key: mySong Model Key Path: version I have attempted changing the Model Key Path in step 2 to "mySong" which makes more sense but the compiler complains. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. • Django forms "not" using forms from models

  I have a form generated from various models and the various values filled go and sit in some other table. Hence, in this case I haven't used the inbuilt Django forms(i.e. I am not creating forms from models ). Now the data which is posted from the self made form is handled by view1 which should clean the data accordingly. How do I go about it and use the various functions clean and define validation errors (and preferably not do validation logic in the view itself!)

  I have deployed my ASP.net MVC site to a shared hosting company. The problem is that now none of the pages except for the home page work. For example if I go to /Account/Register I get a page not found. However, if I go to /Account/Register/Index.aspx then it does work. I have tried modifying the routing to add in that index.aspx but everything I have tried fails.

  If you go to the iphone library and then go to songs, you will see the songs being displayed in a similar way to the MPMediaItemPicker class does. The only difference is that the ipod application shows the search bar right at the top of the list and also a nice alphabetical scroll on the right hand side whereas the MPMediaItemPicker class only isplays a simple scroll going up and down. How can i implement an alphabetical scroll on the right in the MPMediaItemPicker class? Can someone please help me.

• Is there an analog for the VI '.' command to repeat-last-typed-text

  I've used emacs for decades and always wondered, but kept on coding, if there was a way to type in something, them move the cursor and insert the same text, like the VI . command. Instead what I do is to type the text, set the mark, backup, copy the region, go to the next spot (often just C-n, down one line) and then pre-arg yank, C-u C-y. It's the overhead of set mark, backup and copy region that makes me just go ahead and retype the thing.
