• Is it OK to push my code to GitHub while it is still in early development?

  I have some projects that are in a very early development state. They are nowhere nearing completion but I do host them (as public repos) on GitHub because: I have multiple computers and I want access to my code everywhere I want a backup for my code I want it to be easy if someone wants to collaborate in some way I use GitHub Issues as a poor man's project management software Is it OK to publish a project on GitHub even when it is very early in the development? I am a bit concerned about someone to come by and say OMG this is total BS, this code is so bad! while looking at unpolished/still in development/not tested code. What are your practices when you start new public projects? Do you wait until you have something substantial to show or you create a bare repo directly on GitHub and start from there? I used GitHub throughout this post but this applies to every code hosting service out there.

I'm presenting in a session entitled "What’s New with Oracle VM Server for x86 and SPARC Architectures: A Technical Deep Dive", along with Adam Hawley. We'll be talking about Oracle's overall virtualization strategy, what's new with Oracle server virtualization on both x86 and SPARC, as well as an update on Oracle's virtualization management capabilities. The session runs from 11:45am to 12:45pm on Wednesday 10/3, in Moscone South - room 252. You can also find me at the Oracle VM Server for SPARC booth on Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon to showcase some pretty cool upcoming features for SPARC virtualization. • FTP won't open a connection to client

  I am running Windows server 2008 on Ubuntu server 12.04.1 via devstack and I am trying to download a file from an ftp server using the windows command line ftp client. When I run the ftp get command I get the following error message: 500 I won't open a connection to 10.0.0.2 (only to XX.XX.XX.XX) 425 No data connection 10.0.0.2 is the internal IP address of the instance, whereas XX.XX.XX.XX is the external address. Is there anyway to make the ftp client use the external address for the data connection, or alternatively have the client establish the connection? Thanks

• script shortcut to open two files in gedit as sudo

  I want to double click a file on my desktop, and have two files be opened in gedit as sudo. Whenever I'm making a new website, I need to open /etc/hosts /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default.conf as sudo. At the moment this means opening the terminal, runing sudo gedit then opening each file manually. I want to streamline this part of my workflow. On windows I had wrote a little bash script which worked nicely. How can I do the same in ubuntu? So far in my searches I've come across ways of adding a shortcut to the file browser, and similar things, but not exactly what I want. I have tried creating a desktop launcher, but can't see how to make it run as sudo.

• And at what point of modification to the original does source code with no license become owned by me?

  I've recently come across a publicly viewable project on Github that has no license associated with it. In this repo, there is a file with the logic and most of the code needed to work as a piece of a project I am working on. Not verbatim, but about 60% of it I'd like to use with various modifications. Once my code base is a little bit more stable, I plan to release what I've done under the WTFPL License. I've emailed the repo owner, and so far have not gotten a reply. I know I have the rights to fork the repo, but if I release a stripped down and modified version of the other project's file with mine, under the WTFPL, am I infringing on copyrights? Per Github's Terms of Service, by submitted a project on Github and making it viewable to the public, you are allowing other users to see and fork your project. Doesn't say anything about modifying, distributing, or using the fork. And at what point of modification to the original does it become owned by me?

• Game Asset Storage: Archive vs Individual files

  As I am in the process of creating a 3D c++ game and I was wondering what would be more beneficial when dealing with game assets with regards to storage. I have seen some games have a single asset file compressed with everything in it and other with lots of little compressed files. If I had lots of individual files I would not need to load a large file at once and use up memory but the code would have to go about file seeking when the level loads to find all the correct files needed. There is no file seeking needed when dealing with one large file, but again, what about all the assets not currently needed that would get loaded with the one file? I could also have an asset file for each level, but then how do I deal with shared assets This has been bothering me for a while so tell me what other advantages and disadvantages are there to either way of doing things.

  The File/Ftp Adapter allows you to control the order in which files get processed. For example, you might want the files to be processed in order of their modified times/ file sizes etc. Luckily, the File/Ftp adapters allow you to achieve this via a "FileSorter" attribute that you can define in the JCA file for your inbound File/Ftp Adapter service.   The File/Ftp Adapters ship with two predefined sorters that use the last modified times e.g.   However, there are times when you would like to define the order yourself. In situations like this, you can implement a Java Comparator and register the comparator with the File Adapter as described below: 1) Write a comparator.   I noticed that my 11.10 does not hibernate. When I hibernate, and starts PC, it doesn't restore all my open apps etc. Its like a shutdown ... why might that be? UPDATE Output from gsettings http://pastie.org/2926504 Using a vanilla Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 installed yesterday (no more from alternate CD, but problem still persists) I dont see any options in BIOS for S1, S3 or ACPI, are they hidden somewhere? • Files don't sync with U1.

  I am running 10.1 (all current updates have been installed) and I'm unable to sync any files to U1. U1 shows my computer as being added to my account and I bought enough space to hold all the files I want backed up, but for some reason it still doesn't sync. I have marked the files to be synced and even checked the devices tab in the U1 preferences; it shows my computer as being part of my account but the connect button is inoperable and restart doesn't produce any effect when clicked. I have read all the FAQ I can find relating to my problem and have tried all the suggestions that seem to adress problems similar to mine, as well as adding and removing my computer from my account a bunch of times. None of these produced any effect one way or another. I'm not very techno savvy so step by step and/or lay mens terms are greatly appreciated, Thank you

• Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code?

  Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code? I'm hoping that I can pick up some organizational tips. Most examples in books are too short and leave out lots of detail for the sake of brevity. I'm particularly interested on how to group your variables and methods so that another programmer would know where to look in the code. For example initializers at the top, then methods that take input, then methods that update views. I don't care about a particular language, as long as its OOP. I looked at the Quake 2 and 3 sources, but they're straight C and not much help for getting tips on organizing your objects. So, have you seen some good source? Any pointers to code that makes you say "wow, that's well organized" would be great.

• Creating an install drive - can not open output file autorun.inf

  I am trying to make an install/boot drive for a computer that has no operating system and no optical drive. I used the ISO from Ubuntu.com and the burner from pendrivelinux.com. When the program starts writing to the flash drive, there is an error displayed that says : "0 can not open output file E:\autorun.inf" But continues to write data. After it has finished, I remove the drive and insert to the other computer and turn it on, but it never finds a drive to boot from. What is causing this problem and how can I fix it ?

  Something odd I recently encountered, running file --mime-type on a collection of MP3 gets the mime-time wrong a third of the time: $ for i in */*.mp3; do cat "$i"| file --mime-type -; done | sort | uniq -c 140 /dev/stdin: application/octet-stream 309 /dev/stdin: audio/mpeg There doesn't seem to be any obvious reason, as even MP3s from the same source, will sometimes fail and sometimes not. Bug, feature or anything obvious I am missing here?

• Got problem with installation. "No root file system is defined."

  I'm very new with Ubuntu and generally with linux. I saw ubuntu and it seems like this OS is really good and stable, and so I decided to install it alongside my windows 7 OS. I have a few problems with the installation. Here is what I did: I downloaded the 64bit version from Ubuntu official website, and burned it on a dvd. I set the boot sequence to first load from my CD-Rom. Ubuntu installation started, and I chose "Install Ubuntu" in the menu. (where there is also a "Try Ubuntu" option) I clicked forward until I got into the installation type screen As you can see, the installation wont show my actual details about my hard drive! I have 1 hard drive with 750 GB - 80 GB - My main drive with windows 7 OS 600GB - All of my stuff 20GB Free space that I saved for Ubuntu But the installation wont show that!

• No such file but the file is there!

  I'm trying to compile a C++ file with some includes. My main file (well I didn't make it hdf5_getters includes a file which includes the file hdf5.h, also not my design but it's a downloaded library. Every time I try to compile it I get the error message that the file hdf5.h does not exist while it clearly does. I started reading on the internet and people say it can happen because it's a 32bit binary running on a 64bit architecture. But I'm running a 32bit Ubuntu so that can't be it...   Silverlight has a method called HtmlPage.PopupWindow() that opens new web browser window with a specific page. You can find this method in the namespace System.Windows.Browser. If you haven’t in your project, add a reference to System.Windows.Browser. • How do I recover files from U1 cloud

  OK I have just stopped syncing a folder. This appears to have been a huge mistake. I did not realise the folder would disappear from my cloud storage. I assume (and hope) the sub-folders/files it contained still exists in the cloud. I hope they still exists in the cloud because they do not exist on my computer. I did not delete these files from the cloud (I have tried to recover deleted files - none are being recovered). Where are they and how do I get them back into My storage?

  I am new to linux shell scripting. I want to write a shell script which will open terminal with multiple tabs; it should run rtsp client app in each tab.   Say you started as SaaS service with freemium business model such 37Signals - Basecamp or Dropbox etc.. Is there an OSS license that says that you can use the source code etc.. but you cant release a SaaS based on it, esssentially released in good faith with non-compete expectations. e.g. if 37Signals released the source for highrise, basecamp etc.. someone could start 37signals4lesss.com (albeit once they built the same bit of provisioning logic) and damage the core business model.

• Ctrl-Alt-T doesn't open terminal

  I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 and I've been using for a while now as ran it from a daily build about a month ago. It's fully updated with updates, upgrades an dist-upgrades and it was working up until very recently. Not sure exactly when I last issued a Ctrl+Alt+T as I quite often just leave it running however it will have been certainly in the last week. Basically when I hit that key combo I do not get a terminal. I know that each of the keys function as I can Atl+Tab through open applications and I can Ctrl+C to copy and past Ctrl+V to paste and I've typed plenty here that has a "T" in it. I have checked Keyboard Layout in Settings and the correct combo is assigned to the terminal. You'll have to take my word for that as I'm not allowed to post my screenshot!!!!!
