  • Windows 7 search not finding files

    Can anyone please explain this quirk in Windows 7 search (not a big fan of it - preferred XP method or least both). With Outlook, you sometimes have to find and delete your OST file. It resides in the user's profile folder. How come searching the entire C: drive for *.ost files works - they are in c:\Users\rob.nicholson\appdata somewhere but starting the search from c:\Users\rob.nicholson fails to find the files???   • Why sometimes Windows cannot kill a process?

    Right now I'm trying to Run/Debung my app on VisualStudio, but it cannot create it because the las instance of the app.vshost.exe is still running. Then, by using the Task Manager i'm trying to kill it, but it just remains there with no signal of activity. Beyond that particular case (maybe a VS bug), i'm very curious about the technical reasons why sometimes Windows cannot kill a process??? Can, an enlighted OS related developer, please try to explain? (And please don't start a Unix/Linux/Mac battle against Windows)

  • What is the deal with hard drive technology moving to 4K sectors, vs. 512 bytes? Are 4K sector disk

    I've noticed that some Western Digital hard drives are now sporting 4K sectors, that is, the sectors are larger: 4096 bytes vs. the actual de facto standard of 512 bytes. So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now? Why didn't it happen sooner? Are there things to look out for when buying a 4K sector hard drive? e.g. incompatibility? Anything else we should know about 4K sectors?

  • ustream and justin.tv don't work, UTube and bitgravity are fine

    Can anyone explain this? On this laptop, ustream and justin.tv don't work - just get a blank screen. But UTube and bitgravoty work fine (also flash based). 64-bit windows 7 - but I have 64-bit windows 7 on my desktop machine and everything works fine there. Good place to test is here http://live.twit.tv/ where the bitgravity feeds work fine, but ustream and justin.tv don't.

  • Automate uploading of videos to YouTube

    Here's the problem: I would like to keep lots of home made videos. Of course, they are subject to being lost, or somebody could steal the the computer, or water or fire could destroy them. Secondly, I have to plug in my hard drive every time I want to watch something, which I find slow and cumbersome. I was thinking that perhaps I could upload the videos to Youtube with the privacy set to invite only and then delete the video from the hard drive automatically. Could this be done?

  • Do all Mac OS X applications require Admin permissions to 'install'?

    I'm new to the whole Mac OS X operating system. I'm trying to learn and I've got myself a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.7.3. I've created a test user that can not administrate so that I can test out permissions and I've found that I can not do anything in the Applications folder, which includes 'installing' applications (even those drag 'n' drop ones) and creating folders, without entering an Admin name and password. However, I was under the impression that this wasn't the case and you only needed Admin permissions to write to somewhere like Preferences, so can somebody please clarify why it is asking for Admin when I try to drag 'n' drop applications into the Applications folder.

    I got a request to provide logon to access to one of Windows 2008 server, after I added this server on user's logon to list and given local admin access to server. I am not able to take RDP session. Its giving error.. Local Security authority failed to connect... I see Event ID 56 ..Source Termdd When I given access to Windows 2003 it working fine..     Possible Duplicate: What’s your favorite ticketing system? I was wondering if somebody could recommend me a very user friendly or simple general purpose ticketing/tech support system. I need something that is web based, preferably open-sourced/free software implemented using PHP, Ruby, Ruby on Rails or Java (as back end) with MySQL or PostgreSQL as database engine. I need something that is not development management oriented or project management oriented like Eventum or similar (random example), something to which the user can connect open a tech support request and be able to follow it until is solved or dropped.I need it to be open-sourced to be able to modify it if there is a need or extend it. I tried a number of such systems available and I found that osTicket or eTicket is something that it's close to what I need, but the code is somewhat flaky and some of the features are working badly or behaving strangely. Any thoughts/advice where to find something similar? Thanks!

  • Excel hyperlink not redirecting properly (bug?)

    I don't know is this is the right place to post this questions, but I have an excel hyperlink problem. Here's the thing. I click on let's say "A1", copy the link in it (http://www.godaddy.com/domains/searchresults.aspx?ci=54814), right click on hyperlink and copy that SAME URL as the link (if it is not automatically detected and changed). When I go to click on it, I am readirected to http://www.godaddy.com/domains/search.aspx?ci=53972. If I copy and paste the link directly into the browser, it works fine.   • How do I change OSX package install directory?

    It drives me nuts that every time I download a binary to run on OSX that it wants to install in system directories. ~/Applications is a perfectly fine place to install and doesn't require blindly authenticating somebody else's binary. Is there a way to change the install directory for packages? On a few I've been able to open the package and edit the plist to install it elsewhere, but that doesn't work universally. I install from source when I can, but it isn't always an option. Is there a good way to force the installer to use ~/Applications?

  • Fastest SFTP client

    Protocol: SFTP (port 22) I've tested CuteFtp, FileZilla, SecureCRT and several others. Looks like CuteFTP has the best throughput, usually 200%-400% than others. I've read something about SecureFtp may have slower rate from here. Can anyone explain why CuteFtp has better throughput? And, is there any other FTP client even faster than CuteFtp? Thanks a lot!

    This seems similar: EXT4 "No space left on device (28)" incorrect but there is no explanation I created an ext4 filesystem on a RAID 1 array with: mke2fs -t ext4 -T small /dev/md0 Copying a single directory with many tiny files I get: cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/raid1_new/pics/pic3412.jpg': No space left on device space used 5% inodes used 1% I manually tried: cp /source/test1.jpg /mnt/raid1_new/pics/test1.jpg --- error cp /source/test1.jpg /mnt/raid1_new/pics/test2.jpg --- ERROR cp /source/test1.jpg /mnt/raid1_new/pics/test3.jpg --- no error Notes: RAID 1 disks are error free. I tried mv instead of cp and got the same thing. I tried omitting -T small with no effect Can somebody help me understand this magic?

  • Allow traffic from ssl-vpn to enter ipsec tunnel on fortigate

    we configured our FortiGate 50B to route traffic from our local net 192.168.10.* (which is our office) to a remote network 172.29.112.* using an ipsec tunnel. Everything works fine as long my computer has an ip from 192.168.10.*. We can also connect to the office network from at home using a ssl vpn connection. Once connected we receive an ip from 10.41.41.*. Now I want to allow the traffic flow from 10.41.41.* to 172.29.112.* just like it does from the office network. Could somebody point me in the right direction what I would need to do? Thanks, Sascha

  • What's with all the mailing archives?

    When I google for certain questions, or problems I run into I would sometimes run into 'archive' sites - these sites contain forum questions or information from other sites that are extremely poorly formatted, and are copies of the well formatted original posts from various forums. An example of one of those sites in mail-archive.com and various similar sites. Can anybody explain to me why those sites exist and how come they don't get banned from Google (since all they have is copied content that is really poorly formatted by bots)? Thanks!

  • Root access on media temple.com dv server

    This may be a dumb question. I just purchased dv access at media temple.com. I set up root access as required, set up a root access password. Now, for the life of me I can not figure out how this password gets used. Everywhere i try to use the password it does not work. Even tried to ssh with Putty and that didnt work either. Can somebody possibly explain to me what this root access is and how I use it. Im a newbie just trying to learn something new.

    I have a production web server that makes sites to be very slow when load for first time. After the first time all connections are normal and fast. In the following screen you can see the first test I have run for a random site in my server: and here you can see the result of the second time request: As you can see there is a big change in the second load of the same page. Here is the page load time graph: My problem is that I don't really know anything about Red Had Linux server, and also I don't know where can I start. Can somebody to help me ? I like to find out the solution for the long time "wait" in connection. I know that my question is very minimal, but you can always ask me to give you information about the server.

    I'm just setting up my AWS server & I'm trying to use the EC2 Console to terminate some extra instances that I generated via the AWS for Eclipse toolkit's New Project AWS Java Web Project utility. Unfortunately, every time I stop, then terminate such an instance via the EC2 Console, it automatically recreates & reactivates itself! I really don't want to be paying for 4 dev systems when I only need 1, so can somebody please clue me in? Please explain gently... I'm new to this environment.

Now, i have upgraded my account to VPS at Hostgator and i want to transfer only ONE website over the new VPS. say, mydom.net. this website includes wordpress installation and other custom pages and setup can somebody please guide me How can I transfer the web to my new account? with speed, accuracy, and such that my website remains in working condition.. what will I do about wordpress? simply copy it will work?(I dont thnk so), if not how can I move it?   • Just to not to be ignorant.

    Could anyone explain to me why is it that producers of processors claim that their processor can perform so many thousands (or millions) operations per second and yet typical program (Word, VS etc.) on my machine with 4GB, 3500hz starts with no less than 10 sec. Have to mention that I've just formatted disk and tick any necessary boxes to optimize my machine. So if for example outlook starts in 10 sec I wonder how many millions of operations have to be performed to run such program? Thanks
