• New MOS Community: Oracle Endeca Information Discovery

• Incorporating GPL Code in my Open Source Project

  I have downloaded a currently inactive GPL project with a view to updating it and releasing the completed codebase as open source. I'm not really a fan of GPL though and would rather licence my project under BSD. What are my options? Is it just a case of keeping any existing non-touched code under the GPL and any updated stuff can be BSD (messy)? The source will essentially be the same codebase i.e. there is no logical separation between the two and they certainly can't be split into anything resembling different libraries. Are my only realistic options to either GPL the whole thing or seek the original author's permission to release everthing under BSD?

• Cannot Update through Manager or Terminal/ Software Center Does Not Work

  I installed Tor a few days ago via the terminal. I deleted some hashtags in the gedit polipo, and changed my proxy settings in chrome, but was unable to make it work and have since changed all of it back. I then downloaded the Tor browser bundle which works great, but ever since then have been unable to download updates or new software. The update manager says to "check internet connection" and the software center displays a mostly blank screen under apps like "rhythmbox" and just says "available from main source" when I click on "use this source" a refresh symbol appears on the upper right corner of the software center for a split second, and then nothing happens. The app does not download and isn't available in the dash. When I try via the terminal it says it's unable to connect to my ip address. I tried changing the server and unchecking all the repository options for software sources, all to no avail. WHAT DID I DO?????

• Will Google crawl session based website

  I have a website, it is split into 3 categories but using PHP its an all-in one kind of style. When a user chooses a category on the home page a session is set, this is then used to set the style and contents of the website. Would Googlebot and other bots be able to still scan my website? If a page is accessed and no session is set then the user is sent back to the home page. I have created special links, that set a session but go straight to the contact page. Even this page doesn't seem to be showing up. Any ideas if a sitemap with specially crafted links (to set the session) will help Google?

• Generated 3d tree meshes

  I did not find a question on these lines yet, correct me if I'm wrong. Trees (and fauna in general) are common in games. Due to their nature, they are a good candidate for procedural generation. There's SpeedTree, of course, if you can afford it; as far as I can tell, it doesn't provide the possibility of generating your tree meshes at runtime. Then there's SnappyTree, an online webgl based tree generator based on the proctree.js which is some ~500 lines of javascript. One could use either of above (or some other tree generator I haven't stumbled upon) to create a few dozen tree meshes beforehand - or model them from scratch in a 3d modeller - and then randomly mirror/scale them for a few more variants.. But I'd rather have a free, linkable tree mesh generator. Possible solutions: Port proctree.js to c++ and deal with the open source license (doesn't seem to be gpl, so could be doable; the author may also be willing to co-operate to make the license even more free). Roll my own based on L-systems. Don't bother, just use offline generated trees. Use some other method I haven't found yet.

  I just wanted to add a c library to Ubuntu which was created by Harvard University for cs50 course. They provided instructions for how to install the library which is listed below. Now when I compile I use something like: gcc –o hello.c hello –lcs50 (I don’t remember the exact command.) However, I cannot use the make command, which is easier to use. I understand that there is some problem with linking the library. What is a good solution to this problem?

• Proper way to use a RenderTarget2D to draw multiple textures?

  In the process of trying to resolve a split screen issue, I've been trying to use a RenderTarget2D to draw a portion of my scene to a Texture2D, and then again to another Texture2D, but the end result of both Texture2D's is coming out the same. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong? • Technique to Display Multiple Browser Windows Tiled at Same time?

  I have a separate monitor that I use for Toodledo (a web-based task managment app), in which I like to display various views (Next Action Status, Waiting Status, Planning Status, and Overdue Due-Date items). I've been playing around with some add-ons on Firefox that allow you to split the browser, but they are cumbersome. I'm now trying Chrome, and opening 4 different browser windows that I've tiled on the screen in quadrants (I use the Compiz grid applet for this). This is not ideal as each browser replicates the URL bar and the tab, and I don't have opening ths windows automated upon restart. Chrome is great in managing screen real estate, but this is not ideal. In Firefox I tried various extension to hide interface elements, but it was very clunky... Am wondering whether anyyone has tried to do similar with TD, and how they achieved what I'm going after? Am wondering whether someone has a good technique for accomplishing what I'm looking for?

• Hacked by our own hosting company!

  OK, so our hosting company decided to clone our site and database onto a new serve. Without our knowledge or permission they then edited our code to point to the new database. The old server was left running, still pointing at the original database. The DNS was changed to reflect the new IP address of the server. Obviously during the propagation customers were hitting both the new and old servers, resulting in orders coming in to both databases, sometimes being split between the two. We're now attempting to reconcile the two databases. The question I have is is it still hacking if it was done by your own hosting company?! I'm fairly sure they shouldn't have edited our code! If they had left it as it was the site would have stayed pointed at the original database and we wouldn't be in this mess! I'm thinking that legal advice is need but just wanted to know if anyone had ever come across this situation before?!

  The European Southern Observatory has released an absolutely enormous picture of the center of the Milky Way captured by their VISTA telescope–the image is 9 gigapixels and captures over 84 million stars. From the press release: The large mirror, wide field of view and very sensitive infrared detectors of ESO’s 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) make it by far the best tool for this job. The team of astronomers is using data from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea programme (VVV), one of six public surveys carried out with VISTA. The data have been used to create a monumental 108 200 by 81 500 pixel colour image containing nearly nine billion pixels. This is one of the biggest astronomical images ever produced. The team has now used these data to compile the largest catalogue of the central concentration of stars in the Milky Way ever created. • Creating a backup - Rsync - Connection refused (111)

  I am trying to create a backup of my website for free. I just want to have a backup of my website, including not only all files and the configuration but also the databases. I mean, a full backup. If it can be done automatically, it would be better. I feel there are better ways than using the cpanel to achieve that (actually, I believe sometimes web hosters does not have any cpanel). I read the following on how to do it: Automatically mirror the entire contents and configuration of your main server to a secondary backup server on a completely separate network in a different data centre. Use RSync, FXP, cPanel voodoo, or whatever method you wish to automate syncing. That is why I installed Rsync Daemon which is an alternative to SSH for remote backups. I configured it but the test went wrong. • Can't load any applications

  After installing Eclipse, I wanted to try to enable the global unity menu for Eclipse. Following a guide on the web, I was to make a change to: sudo nano /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so by changing Eclipse to Xclipse. After making that change, and then running sudo ldconfig. and even restarting, I can no longer open any application. I just see the application appear on the screen for a split second and then it disappears. So far I have noticed that I can no longer load Eclipse and Chrome. Anyone know how to fix this? I have tried changing Xclipse back to Eclipse and running the command sudo ldconfig, but it makes no difference.

  I have been using OpenGL for a while and have read a large number of tutorials. Aside from the fact that a lot of them still use the fixed pipeline, they usually throw all the initialisation, state changes and drawing in one source file. This is fine for the limited scope of a tutorial, but I’m having a hard time working out how to scale it up to a full game. How do you split your usage of OpenGL across files? Conceptually, I can see the benefits of having, say, a rendering class that purely renders stuff to screen, but how would stuff like shaders and lights work? Should I have separate classes for things like lights and shaders?

• Unity calendar lens not showing events in Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm trying to get proper/useful calendar integration into Ubuntu 12.04. I have a Google Calendar (& account) and I want to be able to use this without opening the browser. I want to get the Unity Calendar lens working, so that it shows events coming up, and it allows me a quick way to add new events. However, after installing it, it does not find any events, nor allow me to add a new event. Note that I've installed Lightning 1.4, Evolution mirror 0.2.3, Evolution, and unity-calendar lens. I've also installed Calendar-indicator. I suspect that somehow the lens is not getting the calendar information from thunderbird via evolution. A bit of searching around led me to try this command: /usr/lib/calendar-lens/calendar-lens-daemon.py. • PageRank sharing between domains?!

  I own three domains, say.. example.com, example.in, example.co.in I have bought the .in and .co.in TLDs only to protect the brand. But I have this question: If I make the other two also point to my hosting so that regardless of which one the user types, they are taken to the same website, will the PageRank be split into three and will each domain have one third the actual PR value? What should I do with the other two domains? Where should I point them to, if I don't intend to use them at all (i.e., what should I give in place of the ns1.myprovider.com, ns2.myprovider.com etc..?)

• apt-get update stuck on "Waiting for Headers"

  I'm setting up a Maverick server on a spare PC. The install completes fine and the system boots up into the shell. However, when I try to do a apt-get update , apt hangs on almost every entry with the message 99% [Waiting for headers] sometimes a message of 96 b/s appears on the far right. The actual percent that it claims also varies. Searching around online gave a potential solution by using the option Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth="0" this somewhat alleviates the problem, i.e. it stalls on every other entry with the same message as above. If you wait it out (the whole update took about 4 hours), the update still fails as a good portion of the hits show a "unable to connect" or similar message, despite the fact that I can ping the server from the pc just fine. The problem is also unrelated to the mirror used since I've tried about a dozen mirrors with no success, I've even tried commenting out everything but the main entry in sources.list and it still refuses to update. The network connection is fine since I can ping and wget (apt won't let me install lynx until I run a successful update) just fine. I've also reinstalled the distro with no luck. The only thing weird about the setup is that the PC is connecting to the internet through my windows laptop with ICS configured properly, but as I've said before, the network connection is fine.

• Oculus Rift with Antichamber

  Antichamber runs great on linux (steam version). But it is not playable with the Oculus Rift at this point. The issues are: 1) no headtracking 2) graphics are not being split and distorted by Oculus SDK My current plan is to use LD_PRELOAD to add the functionality, this seems to be the linux equivalent of DLL injection. Antichamber appears to be using SDL, I'm hoping this can be configured to use the headtracking data as a joystick and apply the graphics distortion, but I am not sure which functions I should be looking for. Is there a simpler way of getting these issues resolved? Is SDL the right choice here? Would appreciate any information on how the Unreal Engine 3 works under linux; and library injection too.

• Switching songs - MediaPlayer lags the game

  When the player encounters a boss in the game I'm working on, I want to have the music change. It seems simple enough with the MediaPlayer class to fade out the current song, switch to another, and then fade the new song in. However, at the point where the second song starts, the game freezes for a split second. The songs in question aren't particularly large either - the first song is 1.7mb and the second song is 3.1mb, both mp3 format. • One to many problem with implementing 301 redirect after changed urls

  I have a problem. I had an old dynamic url which I have now split into multiple static urls. e.g. www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=1&id=2 www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=2&id=3 www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=2&id=4, etc which I have changed to something like www.mydomain.com/electronics/radio www.mydomain.com/electronics/television www.mydomain.com/mobile/smartphone, etc. Google has previously indexed the dynamic urls and search results show the old urls. I want search to point to the new urls. I have kept the old url active, so both urls work. How can I set up a 301 redirect in this case? I run IIS and it only allows a page to be redirected to 1 url. Should I deactivate the old dynamic url? In that case I lose all the previous seo rankings..

• System that splits passwords across two servers

  I stumbled upon this news article on BBC, RSA splits passwords in two to foil hackers' attacks tl;dr - a (randomized) password is split in half and is stored across two separate servers, to foil hackers that gained access to either server upon a security breach. Now the main question is, how would this kind of system would be made... codespeaking, for PHP which I commonly develop on my web applications, the database password is normally stored in a configuration file, i.e. config.php with the username and password, in that case it is understandable that the passwords can be stolen if the security was compromised. However when splitting and sending the other half to the other server, how would this go on when making a communication to the other server (keeping in mind with PHP) since the other server password would be stored in a configuration file, wouldn't it? In terms of security is to keep the other server password away from the main one, just exactly how would the main server communicate, without exposing any other password, apart from the first server. This certainly makes me think...

• Is the Alternate Ubuntu installer still required for LVM or Software RAID setup?

  Over the past 5 years, I have been setting up Ubuntu servers using the Alternate installer. I need to provision a new server today, and I'm curious if the Alternate CD is still the only way to setup LVM/RAID at installation time. I'm my limited experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, I noticed it's single installer configures LVM automatically. Has Ubuntu's installer, at least the standard "Server" installer, added support for LVM/RAID, or is the Alternate installer still required for that kind of server setup? http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/DVDs/ubuntu/12.04.1/release/ Alternate install CD The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. LVM has always been fundamental for our server needs, so I'm surprised if it is still not considered a server-worthy feature.

I know they exist because I've met them at conferences, read their blogs, and see them on campus. My guess is there's something about our team that keeps them away. How can we recruit talented women without resorting to gimmicks? I'm not looking for complete gender parity, but why is it that some teams have a 50/50 gender split and ours is completely lopsided?

• Using HTML5 Today part 4&ndash;What happened to XHTML?

  This is the fourth entry in a series of descriptions & demos from the “Using HTML5 Today” user group presentation. For practical purposes, the original XHTML standard is a historical footnote, although XHTML transitional will probably live on forever in the default web page templates of old web page editors. The original XHTML spec was released in 2000, on the heels of the HTML 4.01 spec.  The plan was to move web development away from HTML to the more formal, rigorous approach that XHTML offered, but it was built on a principle that conflicts with the history and culture of the Internet: XHTML introduced the idea of Draconian Error Handling, which essentially means that invalid XML markup on a page will cause a page to stop rendering. There is a transitional mode offered in the original XHTML spec, but the goal was to move to D.E.H.  You can see the result by changing the doc type for a document to “application/xhtml+xml” - for my class example we change this setting in the web.config file: <staticContent> <remove fileExtension=".html" /> <mimeMap fileExtension=".html" mimeType="application/xhtml+xml" /> </staticContent> With the new strict syntax a simple error, in this case a duplicate </td> tag, can cause a critical page error: While XHTML became very popular in the ensuing decade, the Strict form of XHTML never achieved widespread use. Draconian Error Handling was one of the factors that led in time to the creation of the WHATWG, or Web Hypertext Application Technology Group.  WHATWG contributed to the eventually disbanding of the XHTML 2.0 working group and the W3C’s move to embrace the HTML5 standard. For developers who long for XML markup the W3C HTML5 standard includes an XHTML5 syntax. • Kinect joint coordinates and XNA animation

  I have written a program to record the x,y,z coordinated of the Hand joint and I want to animate my models 2D or 3D according to these coordinates. . .However the output of the x,y,z coordinates are fluctuating from -0 to 1 but not more than that..
