• Issues with time slicing

  I was trying to see the effect of time slicing. And how it can consume significant amount of time. Actually, I was trying to divide a certain work into number of threads and see the effect. I have a two core processor. So two threads can run in parallel. I was trying to see if I have a work w that is done by 2 threads, and if I have the same work done by t threads with each thread doing w/t of the work. How much does time slicing play a role in it As time slicing is time consuming process, I was expecting that when I do the same work using a two thread process or by a t thread process, the amount of time taken by the t thread process will be more Any suggestions?

• android game: how to approach mutliplayer

  I'm making a single player game that is near completion, and I am already starting to think about giving the game multiplayer. The multiplayer would basically be finding someone to play against, likely in a waiting room or just have a match-making function, and then having a pokemon style battle between the people in real time. I think it would be relatively simple as I'm just sending information about each attack(move chosen and damage) and what it did back and forth, but I'm not sure what resources to consult for this. I am very new to Android/Java development and really just learning as I go. I have heard a bit about Skiller, but I'm still unfamiliar with using other SDK's and how easy it may be. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what SDK's or methods for accomplishing this. I currently have no money to spend on software development, but I'd like to get started on learning how to do this.

  I'm trying to get Nexus Mod Manager (Beta yet) working on wine, but after the configuration of NMM it crashes with an error. During the startup it spams alot of terminal stuff and at the end I find this error. ###!!! • lightdm.conf content erased, now stuck in low graphics mode

  This evening I was attempting to disable the guest account and something went awry. Currently on boot Ubuntu enters low graphics mode. No specific error report. What did I do? Before this error occurred I added a line of code in lightdm.conf to disable the guest account. I think I may have accidentally erased the contents of lightdm.conf. Not entirely sure. I troubleshooted for the past hour using various suggestions from other Questions to no avail.

• UEFI hardware and dual booting with windows

  I've been struggling for 3 days trying to dual boot Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7. I want to use an SSD for my Ubuntu installation and an hdd for Windows. I realized that I have to install windows first and then ubuntu, and so I did that. When I first install windows it boots fine from my hdd, but when I add ubuntu on my ssd and restart, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. I've read many forums where this is asked but haven't found a single solution that works. I've tried boot repair. It told me to make a fat ESP partition and I did that as well but it still doesn't work. I'm a noob and any suggestions would be really appreciated.

• Ubuntu 12.04 installer does not recognize Windows 7

  I recently purchased an ASUS N56VZ-ES71 laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. I wish to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on it. I shrank the hard drive partitions to leave about 150 GB unallocated for Ubuntu 12.04. When I boot the Live CD of Ubuntu and attempt to install, the installer does not recognize any other operating systems. Through reading a few questions, I have found that this is due to a GPT partitioning table that Windows uses. I ran boot-repair as per other threads' suggestions. This was my output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1176988/ I suppose my question is: how do I proceed in order to get the installer to recognize Windows, so that I don't have to erase the current partition table and can get a safe install?   I m a Software Development major in an Associates of Applied Science degree in Software Development and I ll have a 2nd Associates of Applied Science degree in Information Technology. I m 37 ill be 39 when finished. I enjoy coding HTML so far and networking and windows admin. Are people my age finding jobs right away after school or should i just keeping going to the state university in the CS degree? I kinda want to work.   I am trying to make available on my website a voice chat for a small group of people that allows some other means to interact such as text messaging, photo sharing, file sharing, simple drawing and silly games. In other words, something similar to older MSN Messenger, but on the web. Any ideas on what to use? To clarify, I am looking for suggestions on languages and libraries to use. I want to be able to fully customize it as much as possible because I might want to add other (somewhat interesting) functions later. Low-level programming is fine if required, but platform dependency isn't that much preferred.

• How do i add a start menu page to my java game?

  I have a rather cool space invaders game that my friend and I have been working on for a while, and we have decided it needs an opening page, with "Start" options, "Quit" options and so forth. I have looked at several methods online, but cant seem to get any of them to work! Does anybody have any ideas? P.S Using JFrame to draw the main frame Im just looking to do this within Java, so just a panel that appears at a state change (GAME, MENU). Id like it to contain a few buttons to start the game, and quit. Later, I will add achievements, but im after something really basic for now. But thanks for the suggestions!

• 12.04 monitor brightness commands ignored

  I cannot change the brightness of the monitor on a laptop either from the command line or from keyboard shortcuts. I have verified that the file in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is changing. I have also verified that I am running the nvidia drivers. Things I have tried: Adding entries to /etc/default/grub The GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX entries now read GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quite nosplash acpi_backlight=vendor" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noapic" I have also tried various commands here (with an update grub and reboot each time) but nothing has helped I enabled brightness control in /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that it now looks like Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Driver "nvidia" Option "NoLogo" "True" Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" EndSection Investigated installing linux-kamal-mjgbacklight and determined it was not applicable to my system Nothing seems to have made any difference. I am using an Nvidia GeForce GT 330M with driver version 295.40. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

• Unable to access media wiki pages from another computer?

  I have set up a web server in my Windows 7 with easyPHP. The website works fine when I browse the locally via localhost or 127.0.0.1. But, unable to open the site from another computer which is in the same LAN or in connected to my LAN. My local IP is in the 10.x.x.x range. The firewall turned off on my private network. I've also tried by changing Listen 127.0.0.1:80 to Listen 80 In httpd.conf but still i'm unable to access the media wiki from other machines. Unable to browse the pages from other machines using localhost or using IP address (Ex: 10.x.x.x). Could you please let me know your suggestions and comments?

• Compaq Presario R3000 randomly fails to boot on 11.10, 12.04, 12.10

  I’m trying to figure what to do with random failures to boot. My old HP Presario R3000 with AMD Athlon XP-M sometimes boots, sometimes hangs with a blank screen during boot, and sometimes hangs on shutdown. After a few boot attempts it will finally boot to the GNU GRUB screen where I usually can select Recovery Mode, then select return to a normal boot, and the thing will startup and function normally. The pattern is not repeatable and seemed to start after upgrading from 11.04. Clean installs of 12.04 and 12.10 on newly-formatted hard drives make no difference. If this might be a clue, hangs on shutdown often stop at a line with: “pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: IO port probe 0x3000-0x7fff: excluding 0x3000-0x30ff 0x3400-0x34ff 0x3800-0x38ff 0x3c00-0x3cff”. I did try the “acpi=off” modification from 11.10 randomly fails to boot on Compaq Presario R3000 with no change in these random boot failures. Any suggestions sure appreciated.

• Wrong/corrupted icon in dash

  I am facing a problem with the dash not showing proper/actual icons for certain applications such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Daily Mail. Instead of getting the standard icons for these applications, I get to see a default icon for all the applications. I have added a snapshot to show the problem. The icons that are shown in the launcher once launched or in the /usr/share/applications directory are proper. I have tried rebuilding the icon cache, but that did not help. I have also tried switching to other icons themes. This issue does not appear with Gnome Shell or KDE. I have also tried deleting ~/.local/share/applications/menu-xdg, there was none in the first place. I am using Ubuntu 12.10. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• CSS padding displays in FF and Chrome, but not in IE 8? [migrated]

  I'm updating the CSS on a page design, trying to put borders around my images, with 7px of padding between the image and the border. It seems to be working fine in Firefox and Chrome, but IE displays the border directly against the image, with no padding. Any suggestions? • Are there any third-party components that replicate OneNote?

  I have a client that wants me to add a OneNote-like interface to a desktop .NET application I'm creating for him. We cannot be sure all users will have Microsoft's OneNote installed, so I can't use InterOp or the like. So I am looking for a third-party component that provides the same fluid/freeform interface as OneNote, for capturing images, text, lists, etc. Any suggestions? I'm surprised that not only can I find none with Google, I'm not even finding others like me asking the question. I can't be the only person who thinks this is functionality worth including in our programs.

• poor font rendering in browsers on 12.04

  I'm using a Lenovo B570e. I've installed the mesa-utils for the graphic driver because it wasn't recognized by default. Now I have this: graphic card : Intel® Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2. I don't know if it's just my impression but I think all the images are a little bit pixelated and I think it have something to do with the drivers. Maybe is not the correct driver associated with it, I'm saying this because when I was on Windows 7 the name of the driver was something like " Intel hd graphics..." Any suggestions? Thank you! Later edit: This seems to happen only in browsers.

• C++ game architecture

  I'm trying to make a game, but I'm not sure of the best way to set up the main loop and classes. For really small games, I could put everything in the main() loop, including event handling, collision checking, etc. However, for large games, that's seems like a highly inefficient way to get things done. The architecture I want is kind like the way the Minecraft coders did it (I quote Minecraft code because I've seen the source code when downloading MCP). They have objects entity classes EntityCow and EntityChicken and they have methods like onDeath(), onLivingUpdate(); and item classes like ItemSword have methods like onItemUse(). I've never seen these methods get called directly, but apparently, they get stored in a class called DataWatcher, which, I think "watches" all the data (as the name implies) and calls the appropriate methods in the objects. Is that how most games do it? If so, how is the DataWatcher class implemented? Any help or alternate suggestions is really appreciated.

  There are a lot of threads discussing existence of WPF/Silverlight/HTML5 on Windows 8, I just need to clarify the picture about desktop applications only, I have following queries to the experts What are the technologies available for developing desktop applications on Windows 8? What are the technologies I can use for creating rich multimedia applications. Currently I have an application with DirectX 9 and WPF. If I am to develop something like that for Windows 8 then what options are available to me, and what are the pros and cons of these. Is it a good idea to continue with the same DirectX 9 code on Windows 8 as well? What is the best option equivalent to DirectX, Is it XNA or is it DirectX 11 or something else? • How do I remove Skype 4.3 from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (32-bit)

  I installed Skype on my nephew's new Ubuntu 14.04 LTS machine, and now we've decided to remove it. But I'm not able to locate it in my Installed programs section of Ubuntu Software Center. I'm able to call it up by opening the debian package, Software Center opens it up, but where I would normally see the "Remove" button, I have a "Reinstall" button. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to uninstall Skype. Any suggestions? In case you're wondering I used the version of Skype designed for 12.xx, as there was no option available for Ubuntu 14.xx.

• 12.04 install now just blank screen

  I have attempted to install a new copy of 12.04 using usb stick instead of using download manager. Everything went fine while using usb stick until I restarted after installation was complete. Then, I got the screen with cursor and 4 lines of script with the first line saying "could not write to bytes: broken pipes". I have used several versions of Ubuntu from 6.04, but this one seems broken. I have tried nouveau.blacklist and many other suggestions to no luck. I am using hp pavilion m7790y dual core processor system, with nvidia 7600gt video card, 4gb ram and two hard drives with Vista on one and fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on other. I'm still looking for help to solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

• .NET - Where can I start? [closed]

  I'm a moderately experienced developer with experience developing using a variety of languages. I've done C++, Java, PHP, Javascript, and several other languages. I remember the Java dev stack being rather difficult to dive into, but it's nothing like the endless sea of the .NET framework. I'd like to become experienced in .NET development, as many dev shops are microsoft-centric. But I'm a little unsure as to where the best place to start is. As I already know a bunch of programming languages, I don't really need resources that will help me learn C# or any of the .NET languages as much as I need to learn the development stack, APIs, etc. Any suggestions on the best way to start learning .NET development?

• speed up the update of glutidle()

  I have a client that sends data at 1KHz (i.e. 0.001 sec) to a master over Internet using UDP protocol. In Master, I need to draw an object, but the problem is that the update of GLUT is slower than the client's update. I have tried to use glutTimerFunc(0,glutIdle, 0); but still slow. Is there a way to speed up the update rate of drawing? I need to update Display() every 0.001 sec. Any suggestions? I'm using windows 7.
