• How to elegantly work with a lot of print functions?

  I'm working on a Python project that is executed on a terminal (or console) for which I am planning to implement a GUI. I did not major in CS so I really have no idea how to effectively design a terminal GUI such that: the user interface looks good in GUI, it is directed to a certain widget, let's say, a text label, or a bottom bar, or a hide-able frame. Do you have any suggestions? Currently, I am using the print function to provide essential information on STDOUT during execution, so a lot of print calls are distributed here and there in the code. I'm thinking of using macro-like variables such as 'FILE_NOT_EXISTS_MESSAGE' for printing, and all of them and their values would be defined in one file. Is that a standard way to do this? Should I introduce a logging system? In summary, I'm looking for a pattern for handling console output that is effective and adaptable.

• Files Not Uploading

  So I'm running wordpress. I will make changes to theme files and upload them successfully but none of the changes show up on the actual website. At first I thought it was the wrong theme but I have specific theme files I created that are in there so I'm using the right theme. Then I thought it was a server problem and maybe the companies server are down so I checked a few other websites and updated information just fine. All on linux servers. Then I jumped to Wordpress to make sure it wasn't a wordpress problem but I can update the files fine from their Admin Panel. I checked to make sure it wasn't Filezilla Caches or Browser Caches so I cleared them both. What could be the problem? If it had to deal with the Filezilla client permissions I imagine I would get an error upon uploading but it uploads just fine. Suggestions would be extremely helpful I have no clue.

• Having problem to login after upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04

  I just update to 12.04 from 11.10 and I get to the login screen w/o problems. When I enter my password the screen turns black and returns to the login screen half a second later. There is a related question out there which was solved by creating more space on the disk but my disks (or rather partitions) are all below 30%. I can log in as guest. I can also login at the cmd prompt (going to tty with Alt+Ctrl+F1) with my normal user credentials. When logged in as guest I can also install programs using my normal account password. There is the normal authentication error when I mistype my password so I'm also sure the password works. Any suggestions?

• How to turn off power management for external hard drive (Seagate GoFlex)?

  I bought this 2tb Segate GoFlex this last Black Friday and since then every 15 minutes or so the drive spins down, and then a little while later completely dismounts. Very annoying. From what I understand you could turn this off using the including Windows and Mac only software. This function and what controls it isn't proprietary, right? There has to be something that'll let me set it in Ubuntu... Anyone have any suggestions? Also, I formatted it to EXT4. Hope I didn't screw myself up. :/

  Let's say I need to teach a 3-8 week course in programming/development at a technical school (no kids) (regardless of language or technology and the target audience is beginners). I need ideas to make it a awesome class where I : Maximize the students learning and experience Make sure they don't fall a sleep Engage the students Make it exciting! I can always do traditional lecture+exercises and repeat this pattern over and over, but I think this is to old-school. • Multiplayer in a game. How to design it object wise?

  I was suggested on StackOverflow to ask this question here. I'm working on a simple game and I was thinking of adding multiplayer feature but I'm a bit stuck. I'm not sure what approach should I take, keeping in mind good programming practices. I have a Player object which is created for each player but then I have many other classes that would have to be able to access them. The thing is, if I initialise them in, let's say my main method, then I can't relate to different instances of player class from other classes. The only solution to my problem that comes to my mind is using some form of global objects but afaik using anything globally in apps is usually not a good practice. Any suggestions/ideas?

• How do I reset a lost Administrative(root) password?

  I'm working on a Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) system using a Panasonic CF-50 Laptop. My Client has completely forgotten his Administrative Password. He doesn't even remember entering one; however it is there. I've tried the suggestions on the WebSite and I have been unsuccessful in deleting the password so that I can download applets required for running some files. Do you have a solution? • Disk drive won't let go of password prompt at bootup?

  I had a hacker intrude into my system, at the time it was obvious, so I reinstalled. However, I am left with what appears to be a fatal problem as far as one of my disk drives goes. When I install that drive in my system, a prompt comes up for the disk password, and what it is asking for is a root password. The disk works otherwise normally but despite all my efforts, I have not been able to fix this disk. I have gotten the operating system parted magic and done the most extreme clean up available, the internal one which sends a signal to the disk electronics which runs a built in clean up program. Darik's boot and nuke, I've tried them all but I can't seem to remove this with anything in the Linux line. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've run gparted, created a Sun, an Apple and various other schemes to partition the disk, all to no avail. Can anyone help?

• MMORPG Server architecture: How to handle player input (messages/packets) while the server has to update many other things at the same time?

  Yes, the question is is very difficult. This is more or less like what I'm thinking up to now: while(true) { if (hasMessage) { handleTheMessage(); } } But while I'm receiving the player's input, I also have objects that need to be updated or, of course, monsters walking (which need to have their locations updated on the game client everytime), among other things. What should I do? Make a thread to handle things that can't be stopped no matter what? Code an "else" in the infinity loop where I update the other things when I don't have player's input to handle? Or even: should I only update the things that at least one player can see? These are just suggestions... I'm really confused about it. If there's a book that covers these things, I'd like to know. It's not that important, but I'm using the Lidgren lib, C# and XNA to code both server and client. Thanks in advance.

  It occurred to me today that it might be useful to make a list of all the ways to earn money through either actual programming or just programming knowledge. I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

I am thinking of implementing a file system within a file, but am not sure if its a good idea. The main area of concern here is the access time. • Stuck in logon loop

  Here's the deal. I set up a computer with Ubuntu 10.04 for my grandmother. Everything worked fine. I connected it to the internet at her house today. After rebooting the computer I found that the computer would kick you back to the logon screen if you attempted to logon to her account. It worked fine logging on to my admin account, and also in Gnome's safe mode. I thought it had resolved itself, but turns out it hadn't, and now I don't have physical access to the computer, plus the remote connection I'd hoped to use only works intermittently. I need some suggestions for troubleshooting for when I'm at her house at some point next week. Ask for any more details, but I'm afraid I won't be able to provide many more until I've checked it out in person, since she is basically unable to use a computer beyond web browsing. • How can I defend Ruby on Rails against customers' not technical opinion?

  My customer, a translations business owner, just told me that he has been reading about Ruby on Rails and told me that "there are more PHP guys around there" and "it seems the community prefers it". What would you, as software engineer and freelancer, say to the customer to achieve these goals: Sell Make him see that the technology is my expert decision and Rails is as good or better than PHP (+ whatever framework) for this particular project. • Windows not shown in Grub after installing 12.10

  I just installed 12.10 alongside Windows 7. I split my partition into two because disk reader during the installation didn't recognize Windows 7 as being installed on the computer. It installed correctly and I restarted only to find out it wasn't recognized in Grub also and booted straight to Ubuntu. I read this post and thought of using boot-repair would be fine but I gain this error: gpt detected. Please create bios-boot partition (>1MB, unformed filesystem, bios_grub flag). This can be performed via tools such as Gparted. Then try again. I've no idea what it means or what to do next. Suggestions would be appreciated and I have lost my Windows installation disk and I really don't want to have to go looking for it.

• Option to save project files for later use in Dreamweaver?

  Does anyone know of an extension or other way to allow me to save a set of files in a project for later use? Example: - Working on site A, opened html files A1-A15 (15 files) Received a request to work on site B, new files (number unimportant). I would like DW to remember that I was working on files A1-A15. Close the site A files and focus on just files from site B. Complete site B work. Reopen site A files altogether. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Building a simple web app with database? [on hold]

  I'm building a simple airline reservation system (web app) for a class. I'm trying to find out where to start learning about implementing and integrating a sql database. User's should be able to search for available flights based on destination and departure cities and the like. A good example would be Google Flights. I'd like to access a data base with all of the flight information and display it within tables on the web page. Admins should be able to modify the databases as well. I've tried to learn about things like Node.js, PHP, and AJAX, but most of the tutorials that I've found have been difficult to understand. Any suggestions would be really appreciated, thanks!

• Sound issues in 14.04

  After upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 my sound was lost. I've tried several suggestions from this site (and other helpers) without success. My dual (UBUNTU/WINDOWS) Desktop sound works fine in windows. My DELL Inspiration laptop sound works fine in UBUNTU 14.04 LTS. Does anybody know which is actually the origin of the problem? Is there any solution diferent to essay-error methodology? Isn't every newer version of UBUNTU enough double checked before releasing it?

• Microsoft Excel: How to find the minimum value? [closed]

  I apologies if I post this question in the wrong place. I have a column A with names. For each name, I have a column B, it figures stand between 3 and 10 (eg 3.3 5.4 6.3 7.7). In a column C is then another number, which ranges from a "0" to " 60". Now I want to find out what is the minimum value in column B, but only, where the value in column C between 30 and 45. Does anyone happen to know how I have to type this in Excel? I've already found a lot on the Internet, but none of the suggestions there exactly "fit" to my problem ... I use Excel 2010.
