Why are the proposed BADSIG (on apt-get update) fixes secure?

I'm running apt-get update, and I see errors like W: GPG error: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <[email protected]> It's not hard to find instructions on how to fix these problems, for instance by asking for the new keys with apt-key adv --recv-keys or rebuilding the cache; so I'm not asking about how to fix these. But why is this the right thing to do? Why is "oh, I need new keys? Cool, go get new keys" not just defeating the purpose of having a signed repository in the first place? Are the keys signed by a master key that apt-key checks? Should we be doing some additional validation to ensure that we're getting legitimate keys?

redirect url ending with dot

I submitted my site's URL to my workplace's printed newsletter and when I get the printed version, they added a dot to the end of it. Some people will realize that the period is not a part of the url but others will not. Is there an easy way to redirect from http://example.com/home. to http://example.com/home? I have a IIS 7.0 shared hosting with GoDaddy. This means I have access to the box only through their interface so some options might be limited.

At Pass Summit 2011 a new project was announced. It’s a Microsoft SQL Azure Lab and its codename is Microsoft “Data Explorer”. According to the official blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dataexplorer/), this new tool provides an innovative way to acquire new knowledge from the data that interest you. In a nutshell, Data Explorer allows you to combine data from multiple sources, to publish and share the result. In addition, you can generate data streams in the RESTful open format (Open Data Protocol), and they can then be used by other applications. Nonetheless we can still use Excel or PowerPivot to analyze the results. Sources can be varied: Excel spreadsheets, text files, databases, Windows Azure Marketplace, etc.. For those who are not familiar with this resource, I strongly suggest you to keep an eye on the data services available to the Marketplace: https://datamarket.azure.com/browse/Data To tell the truth, as I read the above blog post, I was tempted to think of the Data Explorer as a "SSIS on Azure" addressed to the Power User. In fact, reading the response from Tim Mallalieu (Group Program Manager of Data Explorer) to the comment made to his post, I had a positive response to my first impression: “…we originally thinking of ourselves as Self-Service ETL. As we talked to more folks and started partnering with other teams we realized that would be an area that we can add value but that there were more opportunities emerging.” The typical operations of the ETL phase ( processing and organization of data in different formats) can be obtained thanks to Data Explorer Mashup. Creating a interactive grid for puzzle game

I am trying to make a slitherlink game, and am not too sure how to approach creating the game, more specifically the grid structure on which the puzzle will be played on. This is what a empty and completed slitherlink grid would look like. Should I create a separate web property? Also, what's the difference between creating a new web property and a new profile? UPDATE: I would want to be able to track conversion from a page on the root domain to a sign-up page on the app sub-domain.

No sound after updating from 11.10 to 12.04

Hi I updated a friends computer from 11.10 to 12.04 and the sound stopped working in the built-in speakers. The computer is a Sony Vaio PCG-2J1L. How do I install drivers for a Konica Minolta 200?

This copy machine / scanner / network printer works with Windows but no drivers are available for linux. When Ubuntu supports a printer it works fine but this one is not supported. SIP clients not working on Ubuntu 12.04

I am trying to find a SIP client that works on Ubuntu 12.04. I have an account on voipdiscount (www.voipdiscount.com) and 12voip (www.12voip.com) Earlier on Ubuntu 11.10, I was able to use SIP clients: Twinkle, SFL Phone. Using these clients, I was able to access my account and make the phone calls to different destinations. But after I installed 12.04, Twinkle, SFL Phone and Ekiga stopped. Whenever I try to make a phone call using one of these software, for some reason they are not able to register. They are failing. Any suggestions as to what I can do? Is there any SIP client that works on Ubuntu 12.04? Thanks!

Moving from a traditional in memory Java session to persistent storage sessions

We have decided to take the plunge and move from using a typical java session provider in Tomcat/Jetty/etc to persisting everything to a central datastore. We are looking at using MongoDB for this. A few options come to mind... http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/Tutorial/MongoDB_Session_Clustering This is nice because it will "auto-magically" persist our session to a Mongo installation. I am concerned however that we will not have fine grained control of what is happening. https://github.com/mattinsler/com.lowereast.guiceymongo/ GuiceMongo is interesting as it integrates with Guice. Perhaps we could persist everything via this ORM. Has anybody had to deal with this kind of move? It seems that moving from in memory to persistent session storage has a lot of gotchas.

A peculiar issue with nm-applet

There is a somewhat strange error that I've noticed with my gnome sessions. It's not a problem that causes a lot of trouble, but at times it becomes annoying. Anyway, here it is: when I fire up gnome-session-fallback (which is the main one I use), the network applet doesn't run with root permission. Here is what it looks like http://i.imgur.com/8kc7Vrd.jpg . On the other hand, here is what the regular gnome session looks like http://i.imgur.com/wfkkE3E.jpg . From the regular session I can easy edit and add networks, but from fallback session I cannot add/edit anything, or turn off/on the wireless or networking. Any ideas?

In terms of SEO, is it better to have a URL broken down by folder, or with dashed names?

I am creating a friendly url interpreter for my website. I have read dozens of similar topics on this site, but none that seem to address my particular situation. What I want to know is if it's better to have: A well broken down URL where each category is represented by a folder domain.com/1036/OR/Lane/Lowell/Wetleau-Subdivision -OR- A URL which groups all of the categories and terms together domain.com/1036/Wetleau-Subdivision-Lowell-OR-Lane I am asking only in terms of what is best for SEO, not necessarily human readability. My thinking is that it may be better to group them all together like they are in the second example. My reasoning being that all of those terms represent the page and are more likely to draw a result. I am a complete SEO nub though, and I crave some expert guidance. Thank you in advance for any help given.

Dynamically change page content based on URL parameter?

The title of my question seems simple but here is an example of what I want to do: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/infant-jaundice/DS00107 What happens on that page is whenever you click on a link to go a section (e.g. "Symptoms") in the article on "Infant Jaundice", it provides a URL parameter like this: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/infant-jaundice/DS00107/DSECTION=symptoms As the DESCTION parameter changes, you get different content on the same page DS00107. The content changes as well as <meta keywords>. Can someone please tell me how this is achieved? I was thinking it was an if/else situation programmed into the page itself to display different properties depending on the URL parameter. Any help or suggestions are very much appreciated and my thanks to you for reading my question.

Does Google pick up anchor text that is in nested elements?

When Google looks at anchor text on a website, will it pickup the text if it is inside nested elements? So for example: <a href="http://www.google.com/">Visit Google</a> To: <a href="http://www.google.com/"> <div class="circle"> <span>Visit Google</span> </div> </a> The reason I ask is because I want to use css3 elements for certain links on my website, to style them as circles. But the anchor text needs to be picked up for these links, so I want to know wether or not the above is bad practice in this case.

Variable names for Contact Information bits

I am in the middle of refactoring code and would like to get some ideas on variable naming so that my new names clearly represent the data they hold. I have a class called ContactMethod which makes sense to me; each instance is a different way to contact someone. My problem comes when naming the properties of ContactMethod. For example, one instance might be a Fax number of 555-555-5555 while another could be an Email address of [email protected]; I've got a property called contactMethodType to hold the values "fax" or "email", but I don't know what to call the "555-555-5555" or "bob@email.com" part. Has anyone here created a good generic name for this piece of contact information? (PS - the old convention was to call it a "Phone" with fields "phoneType" holding the "fax"/"email" value and "phoneId" holding the number/address. Yuck.)

Securing Facebook

Probably like most of you, I am concerned about the privacy of Facebook. Some people suggested that I use the HTTPS address instead. Unfortunately, many links in the HTTPS page itself link back to HTTP. So I am wondering whether it is possible in Ubuntu to redirect any request to: http://www.facebook.com/ to https://www.facebook.com/ This way I feel safer. If you also know the solution for Windows, it might be great to share (probably as a comment to my question rather than answer, as this forum is supposed to be for Ubuntu) so that I can share it with friends.

I got stocked passing parameter to one master page for some reasons, seems the page lifecycle and dynamic loading of the master pages has got some issues with defining public properties in the masterpage within my project. It did not set my values and as a result, properties became useless. A collegue just mentioned using HttpContext. have a look what MSDN saying "Encapsulates all HTTP-specific information about an individual HTTP request" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.httpcontext.aspx HttpContext.Current.Items["ParameterName"] Also, Page.Items could do the same thing. Page.Items, "Gets a list of objects stored in the page context" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.page.items.aspx as your master page and content page are rendered as a single document anyway.

App not showing up in Google Play search on app name [on hold]

About 30 hours ago, I released an app on Google Play. I am concerned that if you search on the exact app name, it does not show up in the results, even if you click "show more". https://play.google.com/store/search?q=free+graphing+calculator&c=apps It does show up if you put the name in quotes. But that's awfully low discoverability. https://play.google.com/store/search?q=%22free%20graphing%20calculator%22&c=apps Possibly relevant information: I had an earlier version with a different bundle ID. It was up for just an hour or so, and probably never actually visible to users. How can I fix this?

Ubuntu 12.04 won't boot at all for the first time

Using http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer So I tried installing Ubuntu for the first time today, and it installed all well, but then it froze at the 'Preparing to run Ubuntu for the first time...' screen. I then proceeded to restart my computer and load Ubuntu from the OS selection screen. My screen completely froze and the picture didn't even come up fully as if my video driver was not installed correctly. Are there any fixes to this problem? Would greatly appreciate it. Possible useful information: Using http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer Dual-booting with Windows

Error downloading novacom drivers – WebOS

I got sick of the Bing Maps on WebOS not being able to find “coffee” when I’m in St. Paul. Coffe Pk, TX anyone? – no thanks. So I finally got around to installing PreWare on my Palm Pre 2. The WebOS Quick Install doesn’t successfully download the novacom drivers. You can find them here: http://downloads.help.palm.com/opensource/novacom/novacom-win-32.tgz http://downloads.help.palm.com/opensource/novacom/novacom-win-64-tgz Don’t bother trying the Novacom Universal Installer either. Then put phone in developer mode (by Typing webos20090606 and switch on developer mode), attach phone in “Just Charge” mode, run WebOS Quick Install, select the globe icon, and search for PreWare, install.

I spent the afternoon with the Geolocator object in the WinRT and Widows 8 platform. I have also been working with doing Windows Phone 7 development, and first had to wrap my head around the fact that while similar, it is not the same as the GeoCoordinateWatcher that environment. I found a nice example here http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Geolocation-2483de66 But the behavior of my app wasn’t the same. Once you ensure that location services is enabled by following these instructions: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh768219.aspx Location Services was still disabled. From everything I read, it sounded like the first time you try to use the Geolocator object, the user would be prompted to allow to “Access to your location”. After nosing around I found the issue. You need to add the location service as a Capability in the Package.appxmanifest file: After checking the box, I was prompted to allow access to location services as expected the first time I needed to use it.

One subdomain is not working

Hello there, My main domain works just fine - www.example.com and a subdomain set up by another developer works as well - sub1.example.com. But when I try to set another subdomain up I go through the process everything seems to work. The software creates the default files where the subdomain files should go. But when I try to browse there it doesn't work. My host uses Plesk to do all of the hosting stuff. What do you think the problem is? I doubt it is some sort of cache issue because I had problems on my phone which I tried after problems on the pc. Maybe for some reason Plesk needs time to set this up? I have used Cpanel before and that works instantly.
