• Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) for turn-based mobile multiplayer server?

  I'm designing a multiplayer turn-based game for Android (over 3g). I'm thinking the clients will send data to a central server over a socket or http, and receive data via GCM push messaging. I'd like to know if anyone has practical experience with GCM for pushing 'real-time' turn data to game clients. What kind of performance and limitations does it have? I'm also considering using a RESTful approach with GAE or Amazon EC2. Any advice about these approaches is appreciated.

  I have a personal Ubuntu server at home for my various personal development needs. I often spend time to configure it for various purposes e.g. for serving a blog or my mercurial repositories etc. However, I am getting very interested in pre-packaged linux appliances available e.g. TurnKey linux etc. It takes no effort to get an appliance up and running! I was wondering if I could make my home server into VM server, where I can run multiple VMs for various needs. The server does not have a screen, hence I would like to be able to manage my VMs from the web or console I guess in short, I am asking if its possible to have my own personal, light weight Amazon EC2. If yes, how can I set it up? Is there an Ubuntu derived distro available for this? OR can I install a couple of packages and get this running?

• Scalable distributed file system for blobs like images and other documents

  Cassandra & HBase both do not efficiently support storage of blobs like images. Storing directly on HDFS stresses the Namenode because of huge number of files. Facebook uses Haystack for images and attachments storage, but this is not open source. So is Lustre a good choice for distributed blob storage? I have read that Amazon S3 is used by many, but this would cost money and personally, I would not like to rely on third party system. What are other suggestions?

I DO NOT want to use someone else's library to learn this stuff, that bothers me SOOO much. So I was hoping there was a newer book that goes into detail, and doesn't use some sort of library "Hiding" everything from you. Or should I just look at older material? If so....anything thats not "too" out of date. Terrain tutorials are a plus (that's kinda my "goal"). Thanks

• How to debug a server that crashes once in a few days?

  One of my servers crashes once in a few days. It does low traffic static web serving + low trafic dynamic web serving (PHP, local MYSQL with small data, APC, MEMCACHE) + some background jobs like XML file processing. The only clue I have is that a few hours before the server dies it starts swapping (see screenshot http://awesomescreenshot.com/075xmd24 ) The server has a lot of free memory. Server details: Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric i386 scalarizr (0.7.185) python 2.7.2, chef 0.10.8, mysql 5.1.58, apache 2.2.20, php 5.3.6, memcached 1.4.7 Amazon EC2 (us-west-1) How can I detect the reason for the server crashes ? When it crashes its no longer accessible from the outside world.

• How can I implement an escrow payment system in my website?

  Hello. I'd like to build a web service similar to kickstarter that allows users to pledge money to an idea, tho I'm unsure how I can implement this kind of payment system. If the the idea receives a specified amount of money, then the donors are charged. If it doesn't, the donors are not charged. I've done some preliminary research and have found Amazon Payments to be a possible solution provider for this, but I'm still unsure where to start with this and was hoping someone could point me in some right directions for how I can go about implementing this kind of payment structure in my web site. I should also note that this is primarily a prototype I'm building, so it's ok if the solution is limited to U.S. customers only. Also, I plan to build the site using Ruby on Rails. • Why do we need REST service security if we have HTTPS

  I refer to this excellent article http://www.thebuzzmedia.com/designing-a-secure-rest-api-without-oauth-authentication/ which speaks of amazon like security for web service. However I was asked a question in the team of why do we need it if we already use HTTPS. I was unable to answer as it really seems to me they may be right although gut tells me otherwise. Also is there places when providing REST services where HTTPS may not work? Like 3rd party websites? If anyone has experience in securing Web Services over the public interwebs please shed some light with your experience. Thanks in advance. EDIT: To clarify I am not speaking of user authentication but more of client authentication. The user authentication can be assumed to be plain text over HTTPS+ REST. My worry is that this still allows anyone to use the web service without my client to access it since everything is plai text although over HTTPS the client end point can still use my web service without the client application.

  With a simple search in amazon one can see that the modern approach for parallel programming is to use your graphic card. However I am still a little bit skeptical about it. My last computer has an 8 core CPU which I need is enough for basic all my parallel needs, if I need more I will probably use MPI through a network using my old machines. All in all, Why and/or when should I use CUDA or another method which uses my graphic card instead of traditional methods like pthreads, java threads, boost threads or the new C++ 11 threads? • Do subdomains need to be defined through domain registrar?

  I have bought a new domain name from GoDaddy. Let's say it is abcd.com. On GoDaddy's DNS Managing page, I changed A(Host) part to @ = 74.125.232.215 which is www.google.co.uk's IP address. Now if I type www.abcd.com, it directly goes to www.google.co.uk. But if I type http://test.abcd.com, it cannot be loaded. Do I need to define every subdomain through GoDaddy? Is this how it works? P.S. Amazon EC2 directly generates a subdomain for users to reach their virtual PCs. It cannot be domain registrar dependant. P.S.2. Same question for using "www2" at the start of url.

  I have tried several different ways to achieve reading my amazon purchased e-books on ubuntu without success. Maybe i'm trying to do the impossible? Is there support for kindle-on-pc on ubuntu 12? If so please be so kind as to share with me how to. Please don't suggest kindle cloud, unless you know how to copy paste from kindle cloud... The books seemed to be encoded so that caliber cannot open them/convert them so unless i misunderstand thats out to. new install of ubuntu 12.04, i don't own a kindle so i just need a viewer
