• Why no multiple instances of Firefox on Linux as on Windows?

  On Windows If I run Firefox as user jack, and then try to start another instance of firefox I will be unable to, as one is already running. If I choose to run firefox as administrator, then I can have two instances of firefox, separate from each other side by side, because they are under different user accounts. This does not seem to be true on Linux. As user jack if I start firefox, like on windows I am unable to start a new instance. If I open a terminal and change to root, set XAUTHORITY to jacks .Xauthority and try to start firefox as root....I get the error that firefox is already running. Why is this? Please don't spare any technical details in your answers....thankyou.

• Server hard disk read speed and client download speed, is there a connection? [closed]

  Ok so a client's download speed is only as fast as a server's upload speed, and vice versa. Based on the answers to this post: Does upload speed depend upon download speed of the server? In other words, the data transfer rate between the two computers is only as fast as the speed of the "bottleneck". Let's pretend the two computers are in two different networks and both have 100Mbps internet connection. Ben wants a copy of a file in Mark's computer hard disk with 30Mbps read speed. Does this mean that Ben can download the file at a speed of around 30Mbps only, despite having an internet connection faster than 30Mbps?

• Vista laptop won't connect to airport extreme

  Our previous router died, and to replace it I procured an apple airport extreme. My mac, my wrt54gs (with ddwrt acting as a bridge) and a linux machine have had no problem connecting to the wireless. None of the wired clients are having a problem obviously. The problem is one of my roommates can not connect. That's not strictly true. He can connect to the network, and will, infact, get a dhcp lease. However he cannot get any packets out. Can't ping the router, can't access any web sites, nothing. However he's fine if we switch to an unsecured network. Which is obviously not acceptable. The airport only allows for 'wpa/wpa2 personal' and 'wpa2 personal' (and of course the enterprise versions there of) I keep reading about this problem in multiple spots on the web, but never see any actual answers... • VMWare esxi 4.1 storage errors with MD3200

  We're seeing some storage errors from the esxi logs relating to our MD3200. I'm sort of a VMWare noob and am not sure where to go from here because I couldn't find a lot of documentation on the VMWare website, and the forums didn't seem to have any posts about it with actual answers. Everything is working, but I'm trying to proactively troubleshoot this. sfcb-vmware_base|StoragePool Cannot get logical disk data from controller 0 sfcb-vmware_base|Volume Cannot get logical disk data from controller 0 sfcb-vmware_base|storelib-GetLDList-ProcessLibCommandCall failed; rval = 0x800E The ESXi boxes are connected directly via SAS to the controller on the MD3200. What do these errors actually mean, and what's a good path to start troubleshooting or solving them?

• Which hosts have low latency across United States and Europe?

  I'm looking for some information on web hosts that have low latency (<100ms) to both the United States and Europe. The host can be in either the United States or Europe. Latency is most important to the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. Should be able to provide managed hosting. Hosting at multiple locations is not what I'm looking for. Answers should contain at least some latency information from multiple locations, preferably from Los Angeles, New York, London, Amsterdam and Oslo. Also some information on your experience with this host is preferred, do not rant, do provide details of your package (with or without SLA, dedicated or VPS etc.). From my own little research I found that probably New York based hosts can offer low latency to all these locations, but I do not have much statistics to back that up other than my own ping is about 85ms to New York from the Netherlands.

Limiting bandwidth has been discussed before, e.g. here, but I can't find any posts which address limiting both bandwidth and latency. I can get either high latency or low bandwidth using tc. But I haven't been able to combine these into a single connection.   This is a theoretical problem I am curious about. Websites are hosted on servers. Servers can be taken offline. Is it possible to host a website in the 'ether' of the Internet -- not on a server -- so that it cannot be taken down? One example, is that the website is hosted on other websites, like a parasite. Another is that it is assembled through storing pieces on DNS machines, routers, etc., so that it get assembled on the fly. The purpose is that this website could live forever because no one person can remove it. The answers I am looking for are plausible idea/approaches on technically how this could be built.

  just need a quick info on two questions but very related. 1 if we use rds on amazon aws, what happens if some of the machines rds is running on crash? i mean what happens with the data? is it gone? 2 if we use rds on amazon aws via beanstalk, and decide to stop them is the database gone, i mean data, is it gone? thnx a lot, simple yes/no will do, but if you can give more info or a solution to mitigate these issues if any of the answers is unfavorable, that would be great.

  Is Multisession burn available in Imgburn? If not, any idea whether it will be implemented in future? I almost recommended Imgburn instead of Nero or Roxio to one of my friend. He requires multisession burning and I found no options to enable it,if available in Options. Note: Please don't question the question. Like, Why would you want multisession anyway? or Isn't USB stick/RW Disk is what you need instead of a RO CD/DVD? Please keep the answers in context. I know that I can use USB sticks instead of CD/DVD and my friend require mulisession anyway. May be I can ask him to keep Nero as a backup for this purpose if Imgburn don't support this.

• nohup or persistent process on Mac OS X ssh

  I know this has been asked before but none of the answers seems to work in OS X mountain lion. I would like to launch a process via SSH and close the terminal without kill the process. nohup ccl64 -e '(ql:quickload :"file")' & doesn't work. When the terminal is closed the process dies nohup ccl64 -e '(ql:quickload :"file")' same here I think there must be a way. this is very annoying as it works as a standard in any linux system yet mac os x refuses to work with any of these combinations. • Streaming media from linux server - low footprint is crucial

  I recently pre-ordered the Raspberry Pi. http://www.raspberrypi.org/faqs For those of you who don't know it, it's a machine with 256 mb ram and a 700 MHz processor for $35. I plan to run linux on an SD card on this machine and have it act as both a htpc, VPN and media server. In regard to the media server part, I need to find some linux software that has a small footprint, but allows me to stream media to other devices connected to the internet (preferably without having to install any additional software on the client machines) Also, I would love if the video could be compressed, so the data usage wouldn't be so big for the client machine (e.g. when I'm using my data plan on my smartphone ;) ) Thanks in advance for any answers :) Mike.

  I have a 32-bit Java installed just for Chrome and 64-bit Java JDK for everything else. When I type java -version in the cmd, the 32-bit Java answers: C:\>java -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing) This is the 32-bit JRE installed for Chrome (the installer name was chromeinstall.exe). However, I'd like the default Java to be this one: C:\>"Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) And for the fun part, only the 64-bit one is in PATH! C:\>echo %PATH% C:\Windows\system32;C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin (snipped irrelevant entries) So long story short: 64-bit JRE is in PATH, but 32-bit JRE is ran by default. What is happening here? How to fix it? Tried reinstalling the 64-bit JDK as a whole, didn't help.

During reboot, the BIOS checks the Machine Check registers and determines that the previous reboot was due to an UCE, then reports this in POST after the memtest stage: A Hypertransport Sync Flood occurred on last boot 3 BIOS reports this event in the service processor’s system event log (SEL) as shown in the sample IPMItool output There are what seems to be some suggested answers to include Bad Caps Bios verisons (happens in one version not the other) Graphics card issues Lack of power to the CPU The list of possible generators seems to target everything but the computer case.   Hi, I've been convinced to use windows setup files(msi) for the installation of my new windows forms application after I asked a question here and got some excellent answers (thank you all): http://serverfault.com/questions/97039/net-application-deployment Now i have a different question: My application will need to access a SQL Server to provide users with data, which means that the connection string must be stored in the client's app.config file. How should I handle this? During installation, the user enters the connection string to that database? How they get the connection string? In an email from the admin? What if the admin wants to use SQL authentication and need to put the user info at the connection string? So you know, the app will be sold via the internet, so I don't have any access to the admins or the network. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced.

• Best filesystem choices for NFS storing VMware disk images

  Currently we use an iSCSI SAN as storage for several VMware ESXi servers. I am investigating the use of an NFS target on a Linux server for additional virtual machines. I am also open to the idea of using an alternative operating system (like OpenSolaris) if it will provide significant advantages. What Linux-based filesystem favours very large contiguous files (like VMware's disk images)? Alternatively, how have people found ZFS on OpenSolaris for this kind of workload? • Word 2003: Bullet style renamed; is there some way to reverse this?

  I have a machine that seems to have had its bullet style permanently changed - I previously was creating a document which had a question/answer format, where the answers were bullet points, so I created a style for them. The problem is, it seems to have stuck. If you click the "Bullet" button, the paragraph is formatted in the style. I've tried deleting the style in Normal.dot, and even deleting the Normal.dot file in the entirely - neither seems to fix the problem. Anyone have any other bright ideas on how to fix it?

• Removed password from Windows 7, now I cannot login using Remote Desktop

  I removed the password from the only account on my Windows 7 computer and now I get the following message when I try to log in. "Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed". I did some research and found out what I should have done (disable the policy to allow blank passwords) but now I'm already logged out and cannot get back in. Does anyone have any suggestions? Update Thanks for all the answers. I actually think the reason I couldn't login with blank password was because I was logging in with Remote Desktop. I had no idea that made a difference, so didn't think it would be relevant to mention. When I went directly on the physical computer, it did not stop me from logging in without a password.

• OpenBSD ftp-proxy behind NAT itself

  Is it possible to change the PASV IP ftp-proxy of OpenBSD sends to clients, without changing the listen address of redirection control (-b <address>)? I have the following setup: FTP client --> 1:1 NAT router --> OpenBSD router --> FTP server The 1:1 NAT router has a NAT rule to forward everything to the OpenBSD router, the OpenBSD router runs the ftp-proxy -R <FTP server IP>. When the FTP client sends the PASV command, the proxy answers with the Entering Passive Mode (227) message with his own source IP on the interface to the 1:1 NAT router (obviously). Since the 1:1 NAT router is not protocol aware, it forwards this message and the client receives the message with the PASV IP of the OpenBSD router, which it does not have a route to. Is there a way, that I can tell ftp-proxy to send the Entering Passive Mode message with a different source IP?

• Accessing multiple local HD's or RAID with ESXi 4.0

  How to I get additional HD's to be recognized and used by ESXi 4.0. When I purchased my system I had two 2TB HD's, but when I installed ESXi it only recognized one of them. I'm happy to get whatever number of drives that I need (I have a four bay SATA in my Dell T310). What are some options? RAID? If so, is it supported. I guess I would need hardware instead of software since ESXi is so small. The VMWare forums (where I've lived for the last two days) are a charlie foxtrot of outdated and conflicting info. I want to utilize my T310, with 32 GB RAM, 2.8GHz quad core to run many lab Windows VM's. I don't need production level availability but I do want decent performance, even though it's in a lab environment. A huge thanks to Jim B., Zypher, Helvick, and Jeff Hengesbach who posted answers to my earlier predecessor question on why ESXi was so sluggish.

  Hi, If I ask GMail to create a filter for a mailing list it creates a rule containing list:mailing-list-identifier, in the case of the NAnt mailing list it wrote: Has the words: list: "nant-users.lists.sourceforge.net" Is there a way to filter any mailing list? I would like to filter conversations from any mailing list containing answers to things I've previously asked (or answered to). Part of that filter is identifying "anything which is part of a mailing list" and I'm wondering if there is a better way than adding another label to all mailing list posts (which is cumbersome).

• Importing .eml files into Exchange Discovery Folder

  I am needing to import over 18mm eml files into Exchange (this is for a client, so I'm restricted on what I can do - flexibility). They do not want these emails to go to the actual users email, so they do not want them to show up in the users inbox, deleted ..etc. They want to be able to search for these emails for litigation purposes ... hence the discovery folder. I have looked into the Pickup folder, which does not do what I want. I have also been writing some C# code to use the EWS (Exchange Web Service) Managed API, but so far I have not found anything to work for me. The Exchange server is 2010 SP1. I have looked through other questions/answers and they do not really match up with what I'm needing to accomplish. These are older emails that have already been removed from the users mailbox. So to turn around and put these emails into the Users inbox would (of course) be very bad.
