• Why JavaScript dialogs (alert/prompt/confirm) are not widely used and not under active development?

  If there is a need to display some simple confirmation popup, most developers would rather install jQuery, find some dialog plugin for it, skin it, than put a one liner: if(confirm("Are you sure?")) { ... } Using alert() for displaying error messages is considered cheap. And how many sites can you name that are usingprompt()? So, the question is: Is there something wrong with those dialogs so they should be avoided? Yes they have (very) limited functionality and customization, but when you don't need anything fancy, is using js dialogs still a bad practice? Why these dialogs haven't seen any improvement in past 10 years (probably longer) and none is planned for near future? Wouldn't it be nice to have native js access to fully customizable desktop-level dialogs? At least adding error/warning/info type of dialogs and adding ability to customize button captions would be a big help.

• WPF Validation of clipboard Data

  Hello normal validation is always related to some control, but in my case there is no control to fire validation when its content changes and to show errortemplate to the user. because the data to be validated is in the cipboard. when the user presses "PASTE" button viewmodel processes the data and finds it to be invalid. but what is the best way to invoke WPF validation in this case? as far as i understand using IDataErrorInfo is the way to go, but what is the best way to start validation. and whst is the best way of displaying the error? errortemplate of the button element? • Android - How to tell is someone has pressed a SPINNER but not changed the visible item in it.

  I have a spinner, which mostly works. If a user selects one of the items in it, the 'onItemSelected' routine catches it just fine. But if a user clicks the same spinner, but does not change from the already visible item that it's currently displaying, the 'onItemSelected' routine just ignores it, and the logs show:- WARN/InputManagerService(577): Window already focused, ignoring focus gain of: com.android.internal.view.IInputMethodClient$Stub$Proxy@437948b0 I there anyway to capture someone doing this? The idea is that my spinner contains a list of names, and when a user selects one from the spinner, it gets added to a listview. I could just add another button to get the name from the spinner, but, screen-space is already lacking and I'd rather not add anymore content.

• Data truncation when retrieving data from MySQL database with prepared statements

  I have a script that retrieves multiple products using prepared statements. Like putting loops into loops, I have prepared statements in prepared statements - so there is a prepared statement for retrieving all products, a prepared statement to retrieve all images for that product, a prepared statement to get all attributes for that products, and so on. This does not work with one MySQLi instance, so I use multiple MySQLi objects that are opened and closed when needed. It usually works fine, but sometimes, especially when displaying multiple products, some data is truncated. For example - MicoLoans becomes MicoLoa. There was an actual spelling mistake here - now when I changed MicoLoans to MicroLoans, the same page displayed MicroLoa... So the same number of characters was truncated from the end. It is sort of consistent where it appears - for example there can be descriptions for 8 products, and description of 1 product is heavily truncated. When I add 9th product, the short description is still truncated for that same product as before. Any ideas?

• How to create Master/Detail view with two datagrids in ColdFusion

  In Coldfusion, I have Master and Detail data that I need to display in two separate cfgrids; like the typical Customers/Orders scenario. My cfgrids are bound to cfc functions which populate the cfgrids. In my current dataset, only one Customer has Orders and when I click on this record in the Master datagrid the Detail datagrid displays the related records. But when I click on a record in the Master datagrid that has no related detail records, the Detail datagrid does not refresh but maintains display of the previous data. Also the search icon within the datagrid's control panel indicates it is searching for values rather than displaying the Refresh icon. Can you please show me how to establish Master and Detail cfgrids where I can see Orders of Customers as I navigate through the Master datagrid? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! Maklar

  Hi, I have a SSRS report. When i tried to export to PDF it was taking 4 pages due to its width., where the 2nd and 4th pages were displaying one of my field from the table. So i tried to set the layout size in report properties as width=18in and height =8.5in. It gave me the whole table in a single page of PDF. But I am getting 2nd and 4th page blank. Is the way I am doing is incorrect or else how to get rid of that blank pages. Please give some ideas. Thanks in advance. Brijit

• How to make .NET WebForm Routing work with Authorization

  I have routes that are being registered from the database into an asp.net website (non MVC). The routes register fine, they all work when I am logged in. What I am trying to do is create a landing page based on some route data: Page is [site]/landing/dell The route looks like: "landing/{client}" and it routes to my page Login.aspx, in there I get the client out of the route, then display some custom brand data based on the value. In my web.config, I have my authentication mode set to forms, with my loginUrl = "Login.aspx" When the user does not have the authorization cookie, it redirects the user to: [site]/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2flanding%2fdell instead of keeping the route url, and displaying the correct data. The IIS server actually does not even process the route at all, just sends the user to the Login.aspx page. I have tried several additions to my web.config: etc, and many variations, but nothing seems to work. Ideas anyone? I assume this is a common issue, and it is just not well documented.

The problem is that there is a half second "flash" between the removing of the first movie and the displaying of the second. • WPF attach popup with a control

  I have a scenario where I am displaying a popup on my control. I am able to do this using PlacementTarget, Position, etc. My problem is when I resize the window and move it to somewhere else in the desktop, the popup remains stationary meaning it doesn't move with the control set as PlacementTarget. I was able to hide it in case of other window getting focus. But not able to attach it with my control. How can I solve this problem? Is there any other such control available?

• Alternative approach to OpenGL View on top of Camera

  Hi, the traditional way of doing a camera preview background with OpenGL on the front is to take two SurfaceViews(one for the camera another for OpenGL) and stack them on top of each other. The problem is that stacking SurfaceViews is discouraged: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/4850fe5c314a3dc6 So what alternatives are there? I was considering the following: Subclass GlSurfaceView, and then call set the Camera preview onto the holder of this subclass: Camera.setPreviewDisplay(mHolder); Don't use GLSurfaceView, instead create your own SurfaceView subclass where you display the Camera preview onto the holder and also draw your openGL. This would require to use OpenGL without GLSurfaceView, has anyone done this before? I'm not sure if this even is possible or makes sense, since it implies displaying the camera preview onto the holder of the surface and at the same time drawing OpenGL on the same surface. Is there any other sensible alternative to solving the problem without using two SurfaceViews? Thanks!

• JFrame the same shape as an Image / Program running in background

  My question is simple, the solution surely not. I am looking for a way to shape a JFrame the same as an Image it will be displaying. By shape I mean the shape of the pixels that have an alpha != 0. I've already found a working example using a GeneralPath object, but it created ~110000 "nodes" for an Image of about 500*400, so starting the JFrame took more than 2 minutes, which is definitely not the desired effect, the startup should be in under 2 seconds.   Hi guys, I would like to know if it is possible to re-size and re-position a greybox or shadowbox window to display in a certain div element? I am creating a template for a wordpress site, and I am using the default calendar, but when you click on a date inside of the calendar, the default action is to open it up in a new window. Would it be possible to mod greybox or shadowbox in such a way that when you click on a date, the box opens up over the calendar displaying the contents in it, instead of a new page? Or is there another way of achieving the desired result, maybe with jQuery or Javascript? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanx in advance!

  Please, look at this example. I intend making horizontal layout with pure html/css, don't bother of old browsers. I made it with display: table technique. But displaying main text containers (light-yellow) became a problem. Each of this has overflow: hidden to prevent vertical scroll. Later, I intend adding some shadow effect at the bottom. Now, I want to make in, for example, 80% height with 10% margin top and bottom. But what I get is container with larger text stretching all parents container (light-green), so 80% of it became too much. Is there any way to avoid it without javascript? Maybe I can get text container any height, but with some margin at the bottom. I will appreciate any solution.

  Hi all, I made a sample application displaying list of employees with their salaries over NSTableView using NSArrayController. Basic functionality is working as intended. Also sorting is working fine when Selector - compare or caseInsensitiveCompare is assigned in attribute pane for table column- employeeName. Problem occurs when I try to sort it by string length by setting selector in IB as - length, for the table column - employeeName. It does sorting by string length but does it inappropriately. It is doing sorting on alternate clicks ie. on first click it sorts the content in table in descending order by length. Then on second click it does not arrange contents in ascending order by length but sets arrow on top as in ascending. Then on third click it arranges contents in ascending order by length but sets arrow on top of table column as in descending and so on... Can anyone suggest if I am wrong somewhere? Thanks, Miraaj

  Is there any constant value like if we display it in the datagridview it will not display and if we add it in the decimal value the value remains as it is ? Like what I am doing is, I am making addition of two columns say B,C for the column A like dataTable.Columns["A"].Expression="B+C"; Now problem is when there is any value of column B or C is null then there is no value in the column A because of A=B+C like 1+null is null. And even I can not replace 0 where there is null for the column B or C because I am displaying records of each column A,B and C in the datagridview and I don't want to display value for column which has value null so if I replace 0 where there is null then 0 will be displayed for that column which I don't want. So what should I do for that ? So what is the constant value which I should replace for null value for the column B and C so if value of A remains it is and even that value will not be displayed in the datagridview.

  Short version: What's the best practice going forward for efficiently rendering large numbers of independent texture-mapped, lighted 2D/3D primitives (circles, rects, etc.) in OpenGL? For example: a typical particle system using billboarded quads/triangles, point sprites, or whatever other technique, with blending. Because after reading this thread on the messiness of OpenGL versioning/deprecation I'm starting to have my doubts. My specific question is not the ABCs of displaying primitives in OpenGL, but rather how to do so efficiently in post-deprecation (or pre-deprecation) OpenGL, in a way that's going to be compatible with a wide range of commodity hardware and in a way that's not going to break or itself get deprecated, five years down the line.   Ola Folks, In an iPhone application I am displaying different views by using the addSubView:SomeViewController.view method. I want to be able to, at the very least, log the view controllers that are in the view hierarchy that is being displayed. I would prefer to be able to get a handle to a specific view controller. I know how to iterate the views, I just do not see how to access the view controllers of those views. I am looking for something that will give me the type of access to the view controllers that UINavigationController::ViewControllers does. I thought I could get away with: for (UIViewController* oVC in [self.view subviews]) but this is not having the intended effect. If someone has a way of doing this, please share it with me. -isdi-

• DataType for storing a long serial number (10 bytes)

  We have a device which has a 10 byte serial number which must be read into our application and stored into a .net datatype. In the device it is stored as an unsigned 10-byte (80-bit) number. I don't expect we will be performing any mathematical operations on this number, but only displaying it to the user. The .NET framework doesn't have a built in UNIT128 to store this datatype. My suggestion for storing this datatype is to create a 10 element byte array and read in the data into this array. Are there any better solutions to this problem? Note: I have seen in this question that a GUID is a 128 byte signed integer, but it seems like a bad idea to use a GUID in this fashion. Any other suggestions?

• How do I display data in a table and allow users to copy selected data?

  Hi I have a long list of data that I want to display in table format to users. The data changes when the user performs certain actions in my app, but it is not directly editable. So the user can create a reasonably big table of data, but he can't change individual cells' values. However, I do want the data to be copy-able. So I want it to be possible for the user to select some or all of the cells, and do a ctrl-C to copy the data to his clipboard, and then a ctrl-V to paste the data to an external text editor. At the moment, I'm displaying the data in a ListView with a GridView and this works perfectly, except that GridView doesn't allow one to copy data. What other options can I try? Ours is a WPF app, coding in c#.
