• Windows EFS file sharing anomaly

  Fyi, I can confirm this happening in Windows Vista (Business) and Windows 7 Professional in WORKGROUP mode (as both a client and a server). I am not totally sure if this is a Superuser question or a ServerFault question. So there are two PCs, let's call them C (client) and S (server). Both servers have a user called U with the same password. Both C and S has the same private/public key pair for EFS. S shares a folder F with U given full permission. Also locally, the user U has the full permission on F. Now, U, from C, connects to F at the server S, everything works totally fine. I can read,write, delete files and create/delete folders in S. Things go weird from here. I encrypt the folder F in S. I can delete/modify files fine (so the files in F decrypted OK). However, U from C, cannot create a folder, or create a file getting Access Denied. But this Access Denied is very special. It takes over 10 seconds at C to receive the error and the explorer freezes while trying to create a folder, eventually returning error. In S, I can watch the folder created at the same time, and what I see is "New Folder" blinking like crazy and eventually disappearing when the client receives the error. i.e. it's created and deleted in a really rapid manner. What I do not understand is that permissions look fine, I can modify/delete files, and it looks like there is no problem with EFS because I can read/write files fine. Yet it fails to create a file or a folder. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, wbkang

  Hey Guys, We have a windows 2003 r2 server and couple of the users are reporting that they can not scan files into the windwos server. They are getting an Out of Space errors. I took a look at the server and we have 600GB free disk space on that partition. But while looking at the event log I found a lot of errors like (13552,13555) The File Replication Service is unable to add this computer to the following replica set: "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" This could be caused by a number of problems such as: -- an invalid root path, -- a missing directory, -- a missing disk volume, -- a file system on the volume that does not support NTFS 5.0 The information below may help to resolve the problem: Computer DNS name is "server.domain.local" Replica set member name is "server" Replica set root path is "c:\windows\sysvol\domain" Replica staging directory path is "c:\windows\sysvol\staging\domain" Replica working directory path is "c:\windows\ntfrs\jet" Windows error status code is FRS error status code is FrsErrorMismatchedJournalId Other event log messages may also help determine the problem. • Loop over a file and write the next line if a condition is met

  Having a hard time fixing this or finding any good hints about it. I'm trying to loop over one file, modify each line slightly, and then loop over a different file. Yes, I am sure the if has true cases. :-) "seqres.txt" has lines with an ID number in a certain format, each followed by a line with data. The "ids.txt" has lines with the ID numbers of interest in a different format. I want each line of data with an interesting ID number in its own file.   hey everybody, I have a jsp page which contains the code which prints all files in a given directory and their file paths. For example, the code spits out the following path: /usr/local/tomcat/sites/web_tech/images/scores/blah.jpg and I want it to only print the path up to /images ie /images/scores/blah.jpg I know I could just mess around with an actual string, ie splitting it or string matching, but is there an easier way to do it? • How can I delete a file created and opened with Perl's IO::File and XML::Writer?

  So I'm running through a list of things and have code that creates an .xml files with IO::File called $doc, then I make a new writer with XML::Writer(OUTPUT => $doc). More code runs and I build a big XML file with XML::Writer. Then, near the end of the file, I find out if I need this file at all. If I do need it, I just: $writer->end(); $doc->close(); but if I don't need it, what should I enter to just delete all data I've stored/saved and move onto the next file? I tried unlink($docpath) (before and after $doc->close()), the file was not deleted.

• Assemble an image browser side with JavaScript or Flash?

  Would it be possible to assemble an image on the browser by 'concatenating' other downloaded images together? The use case is this. The page will display 36 different tiles (small images). The user should be able to arrange those tiles into a 6 x 6 grid and save the resulting grid to disk as an image. The best solution would be to do it all in the browser without Flash. The next best solution would be to allow the user to create the grid in the browser with simple JavaScript drag and drop functionality and then send the coordinates to the server for image processing. The last solution would be to do it all in the browser with Flash. Is it even possible for Flash to create an image and then allow the user to save it from the browser? I am familiar with the Pixastic JavaScript library ( http://www.pixastic.com/ ), but it relies on getting image data to and from a canvas element which is not very well supported. What if I send the tile images to the browser as base64 encoded strings? Could I use JavaScript to create the 6 x 6 grid image? And if so, is there some way of allowing the user to get it onto disk without relying on the canvas element?

• Unable to open a file for writing

  I am trying to write to a file. I do a file_exists check on it before I do fopen and it returns true (the file does exist). I know that the filename is legit, but for some reason it just wont let me write to it. I do have write permissions, I was able to write and write over another file.

  What would be the best approach to reverse a large text file that is uploaded asynchronously to a servlet that reverses this file in a scalable and efficient way? text file can be massive (gigabytes long) can assume mulitple server/clustered environment to do this in a distributed manner. open source libraries are encouraged to consider I was thinking of using Java NIO to treat file as an array on disk (so that I don't have to treat the file as a string buffer in memory). • C# Image.Clone to byte[] causes EDIT.COM to open on Windows XP

  It appears that cloning a Image and converting it to a byte array is causing EDIT.COM to open up on Windows XP machines. This does not happen on a Windows 7 machine. The application is a C# .NET 2.0 application. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening?   I am writing an ad hoc log analyser for my website log file. The following is part of the log file in which it shows file1.pdf has been downloaded twice. Looking carefully, the time stamp and IP address are exactly the same in both entries. How can it be possible to have 2 downloads at the same time by the same person. Should I count it as 2 in my programme or as 1? • Why would an image (the Mandelbrot) be skewed and wrap around?

  So I just wrote a little snippet to generate the Mandelbrot fractal and imagine my surprise when it came out all ugly and skewed (as you can see at the bottom). I'd appreciate a point in the direction of why this would even happen. It's a learning experience and I'm not looking for anyone to do it for me, but I'm kinda at a dead end debugging it. • How to search for duplicate values in a huge text file having around Half Million records

  I have an input txt file which has data in the form of records (each row is a record and represents more or less like a DB table) and I need to find for duplicate values. For example: Rec1: ACCOUNT_NBR_1*NAME_1*VALUE_1 Rec2: ACCOUNT_NBR_2*NAME_2*VALUE_2 Rec3: ACCOUNT_NBR_1*NAME_3*VALUE_3 In the above set, the Rec1 and Rec2 are considered to be duplicates as the ACCOUNT NUMBERS are same(ACCOUNT_NBR1). Note: The input file shown above is a delimiter type file (the delimiter being *) however the file type can also be a fixed length file where each column starts and ends with a specified positions. I am currently doing this with the following logic: Loop thru each ACCOUNT NUMBER Loop thru each line of the txt file and record and check if this is repeated. If repeated record the same in a hashtable. End End And I am using 'Pattern' & 'BufferedReader' java API's to perform the above task. • Elevating UAC via .bat file?

  Pretty straightforward one that I'm having trouble finding an answer to. serverfault previously helped me with finding a way to automate Windows updates without using WSUS. It's working fantastically, but to run it over the network, you have to first mount a shared drive. That's pretty simple XP since you just mount the drive and run the updater. On Vista and W7, though, this all has to be done with elevated privileges to work correctly. The UAC account can't see network drives mounted by the regular user, so in order to get everything working, I have to mount the share via net use from an escalated shell. I'd like to automate mounting this share and launching the updater via a simple .bat file. I could probably just instruct everybody to right click "Run as Administrator" on the .bat file, but I'd like to keep things as simple as possible and have the .bat automatically prompt the user to escalate their privileges. Since these computers don't belong to us, I can't count on anything like Powershell being installed, so that rules any solution along those lines out and pretty much have to rely on things that would be included in an RTM Vista install. I'm hoping I'm mostly missing something obvious here. :)

The problem that I am having is that when I write the new file it's saved in the project directory. How do I save it in the same directory as the file that I chose using the JFileChooser. Note: I don't want to use the JFileChooser to choose the location. I just need to save the file in the same directory as the original file that I read.

  I'm currently using the magento admin interface, trying to upload an image in the "manage products" and I get the error "file was not uploaded" after I browse the file and click "upload file". I've looked on other forums and the main solution I saw were to make sure that php.ini has the following lines... magic_quotes_gpc = off short_open_tag = on extension=pdo.so extension=pdo_mysql.so I have Windows/IIS with ISAPI_Rewrite. Is there a max file upload size that I can change somewhere. I'm uploading pictures from my local desktop of size ~100kb. help!

• Is there any library/software available that can give me useful measurements of image quality?

  I realise measuring image quality in software is going to be really difficult, and I'm not looking for a quick-fix. Googling this is largely showing up research papers and discussions that go a bit over my head, so I was wondering if anyone in the SO community had any experience with doing any rough image quality assessment? I want to use this to scan a few thousand images and whittle it down to a few dozen images that are most likely of poor quality. I could then show these to a user and leave the rest to them. Obviously there are many metrics that can be a part of whether an image is of high/low quality, I'd be happy with anything that could take an image as an input and give some reasonable metrics to any of the basic image quality metrics like sharpness, dynamic range, noise, etc., leaving it up to my software to determine what's acceptable and what isn't. Some of the images are poor quality because they've been up-scaled drastically. If there isn't a way of getting metrics like I suggested above, is there any way to detect that an image has been up-scaled like this?

  In which document would a file specification belong? Perhaps this file is used as an input to a third-party system. Would it belong in its own document? Or would it be better to put it in the functional or design spec? Or somewhere else? When I say file specification, I mean a description of what format the file is (CSV, fixed width, etc), columns, data types, etc. Also, where should you document how the file is generated? i.e. business rules/algorithms which are used to generate the file.

• How to speed up drawing of scaled image? Audio playback chokes during window resize.

  I am writing an audio player for OSX. One view is a custom view that displays a waveform. The waveform is stored as a instance variable of type NSImage with an NSBitmapImageRep. The view also displays a progress indicator (a thick red line). Therefore, it is updated/redrawn every 30 milliseconds. Since it takes a rather long time to recalculate the image, I do that in a background thread after every window resize and update the displayed image once the new image is ready. In the meantime, the original image is scaled to fit the view like this: // The drawing rectangle is slightly smaller than the view, defined by // the two margins. During live resize, audio starts choking. Selecting the "big" graphic card on my Macbook Pro makes it less bad, but not by much. CPU utilization is somewhere around 20-40% during live resizes. Instruments suggests that rescaling/redrawing of the image is the problem. Once I stop resizing the window, CPU utilization goes down and audio stops glitching. I already tried to disable image interpolation to speed up the drawing like this: [[NSGraphicsContext currentContext] setImageInterpolation:NSImageInterpolationNone]; That helps, but audio still chokes during live resizes. Do you have an idea how to improve this? The main thing is to prevent the audio from choking.

  I am using Windows XP. The code can be used in a batch file or vbs script. I intend to use Windows scheduler to run the program. I need code to read a date from a text file (could be the only line in the text file or the date could be included in the filename, I control the process that generates the file) The code would then need to evaluate the text file date against the current date to confirm that the text file date is from the prior month. I'm starting to build a process to be able to run 1st-of-the-month jobs once the monthly data has been refreshed. I'm new to building this kind of process using batch/script files. • Split a binary file into chunks c++

  I've been bashing my head against trying to first divide up a file into chunks, for the purpose of sending over sockets. I can read / write a file easily without splitting it into chunks. The code below runs, works, kinda. It will write a textfile and has a garbage character. Which if this was just for txt, no problem. Jpegs aren't working with said garbage. Been at it for a few days, so I've done my research, and it's time to get some help. I do want to stick strictly to binary readers, as this need to handle any file. I've seen a lot of slick examples out there. (none of them worked for me with jpgs) Mostly something along the lines of while(file)... I subscribe to the, if you know the size, use a for-loop, not a while-loop camp.
