• Correcting color-shifted mirrored i915 driver in 12.04?

  I was called in to fix a friend's malfunctioning HP Pavilion. She's not sure exactly which model, but the sticker on the bottom says "G60". The problem was a failed upgrade to 12.04. I was able to mostly repair it with sudo apt-get -f install, which ran setup and configuration for several hundred packages. The biggest problem at the moment is Xorg. The login screen (lightdm) loads normally but at a reduced resolution (1024x768 instead of 1366x768). But once you log in, it looks like this: Observe that the colors of the dock on the left and the bar at the top are normal. But the background is filled with bizarro color-skewed ghost images of the desktop. In all cases, the actual contents of any programs you run is a totally illegible mess, except that the bar at the top of any program windows looks and acts normally. And the ghost images are interactive! For example, if you click the icon in the top right corner to get the "shut down" menu, the same menu will appear in the ghost images below. Starting a terminal will start a terminal window in both the real desktop and the ghost images, and moving it around updates both the real and ghost desktops. I suspect Xorg is using some kind of wrong driver and/or parameter for the graphics hardware. I would ordinarily check xorg.conf to see what it says, but that apparently doesn't exist any more, and my googling has not yielded any useful techniques for getting Xorg to tell me what settings it decided to use. The weird part is that it works fine on the login screen. It's only when you actually log in as a user that the display gets screwed up. Suggestions?

  There’s a lot of start page plug-ins for Google Chrome, but if you’re an Ubuntu Forums enthusiast, you might be interested in the powerful UbuntuForums.org Start Page extension. Using the Ubuntu Forums Chrome Start Page Once you’ve installed the extension and opened a new tab, you’ll notice quite a difference from the boring default “New Tab Page”. While you may look at this and wonder if what you see is all that there is to it, there’s actually a lot of hidden customization and functionality. The upper left corner is where you will control the content displayed in the “Ubuntu New Tab Page”. The “Buttons Toolbar” that you see at the top lets you shift between the types of content viewed, from RSS feeds to bookmarks and more. This entire set of links provides direct links to the appropriate section in the Ubuntu Forums. As with the set of links pictured above each of these will open in a new tab when clicked on. There’s even a feature to browse wallpapers from DesktopNexus with categories on the left and pictures to the right. • Cursor running wild, then crashes on an Asus G73sw

  The cursor sometimes goes wild, I get random clicks, the windows are resizing, the cursor disappears. In the worst case, clicks and keyboards are disabled. I've tried the solution given on doc.ubuntu-fr.org and add tu grub : i8042.nomux=1 i8042.reset=1 in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT But it didn't work What can I do ? Graphic card : Geforce GTX460M. Ubuntu : 11.10 (64 bits). Laptop Asus G73sw Interface : Unity (since 11.10) - didn't get this problem with Gnome before. Complement: when a window is resizing, it gets drag-boxes at every corner, center of sides and center of the window. • Why does switching users completely hang my system every time?

  I have a fresh install of 11.04 64bit, with 2 administrator accounts and 4 normal accounts. The 4 normal accounts (the kids' accounts) don't have passwords, they can login simply by clicking on their names. When any of the users -- either admin or normal -- tries to switch to another account by clicking in the top-right corner of the screen and selecting another user, the screen goes black and the entire system locks up. Even CTRL+ALT+F1 through F7 does nothing. This is reproducible 100% of the time on this system. I can ssh into the box when the console locks up, and by running top, I see that Xorg is consuming about 100% of the CPU. • What could be the best way to generalize data from Facebook and Twitter?

  I am not sure if this is the best subsite to ask this question, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't fit on the normal or facebook SO page... I've been asked to make a general API for connecting to several Social Media platforms (at the moment Facebook and Twitter). I have already realised both of them seperately. Meaning I retrieve the data I need from both Facebook and Twitter and hold the data in it's own dataclass. In my case a list of FacebookTimelineItems and a list of TwitterTimelineItems. now the hard part is taking the parts that are used in both (username, id, message and such) and make 1 general class that is eventually passed on to who/whatever sent the call to my API. these are two pics of the data classes I have: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/703/facebookdata.png/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/204/twitterdata.png/ probably not 100% correct but it gives an idea what it looks like. Now I've been having several idea about how to go about and generalize the two, which is harder then I thought at first. Create an interface (TimelineItem) and let the other classes extend that one. this way I'll always be sure I have a class that contains at least the basic info I need. downside is that deserializing the JSON seems to be a nightmare. Use the two dataclasses I have and combine them into a new class afterwards, then pass that one back to whoever requested it. This would probably work but I get the idea it's not the best way to tackle this problem, and is pretty dodgy IF I get it working. Or, in case of the other two being nearly impossible. Keep the two seperated in the front end, and go sit in the corner crying because I've just figured out you can't lump together facebook and twitter... Note: I don't have to make the front end part (view), I just make sure the Model is nicely filled with data :) I hope I placed this in the right section, if I didn't I apologise and would like to know where I should go with my question. • Disk drive for / not ready on boot after upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04

  After upgrading (using the Upgrade button from the update manager) from 10.04.4 to 12.04.1, I cannot boot anymore. Upon booting, I am greeted with the Ubuntu logo and the error "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present". I have the option to wait, to skip and to access a basic shell. Waiting overnight did nothing, skipping just gives me the same error for /tmp, /home, then for a UUID and finally it just goes to a black screen with a white "_" in the top left corner. My setup is a dual boot one with XP on a single hard drive, I use separate partitions for / and /home. Back in the day I installed 8.04 directly from the CD while leaving a partition for XP, which I installed after. This setup had never caused any such issues, even when upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04. I have done plenty of research regarding this issue, as many others seem to have had similar issues after doing the same upgrade as me. However, while for most what fixed the problem was running: apt-get -f install after remounting / in read-write, it didn't do it for me. I got dependency errors (see here), which I also investigated. I found https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-defaults/+bug/990740 where most people say the solution that worked is (prior to running the above command) running: apt-get install -o APT::Immediate-Configure=false -f apt python-minimal but that also got me a lot of dependencies errors as output (see here), similar to #34 in the above thread. I also read that running: dpkg --configure -a could help, at first it wouldn't run because it had trouble parsing /var/lib/dpkg/status since there was an extra blank line in a package description (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+bug/916799) but I removed it using vim (and then reran the command). It still gives me output that looks like an error, though. Here it is: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1338074/. I also tried re-running the above apt-get commands after that, to no avail. • How to Add a Business Card Image to a Signature in Outlook 2013 Without the vCard (.vcf) File

  When you add a business card to a signature, an image of the business card is inserted into the signature and the vCard (.vcf) file is attached. If you don’t want to attach the vCard file, you can insert the image only into your signature. To insert only the image of your business card without the .vcf file, click People on the Navigation Bar at the bottom of the Outlook window. To get a business card image we can use, we must view the contacts in any form other than People, so we can open the full contact editing window. To do this, click on a different view in the Current View section of the Home tab. We chose to view our contacts in the Business Card format. Double-click on your contact in the current view. The full contact editing window displays with an image of the business card on the right. Right-click on the business card image and select Copy Image from the popup menu. To close the contact editing window, click the File tab and click Close in the menu list on the left. NOTE: You can also click the X in the upper, right corner of the contact editing window to close it. To open the signature editor, click the File tab. Click Options in the menu list on the left side of the Account Information screen. On the Outlook Options dialog box, click Mail in the list of options on the left side of the dialog box. On the Mail screen, click Signatures in the Compose messages section. NOTE: You can also access the Signatures and Stationery dialog box from the Message window for new emails and drafts. Click New Email on the Home tab or double-click an email in the Drafts folder to access the Message window. For more information, see our article about assigning a default signature. In the signature editor, right-click and select Paste from the popup menu. The image is inserted into the signature. You can also use this method to copy a business card image for use in other documents and programs. It’s also possible to insert the vCard (.vcf) file into a signature without the image. • Per-pixel collision detection - why does XNA transform matrix return NaN when adding scaling?

  I looked at the TransformCollision sample on MSDN and added the Matrix.CreateTranslation part to a property in my collision detection code but I wanted to add scaling. The code works fine when I leave scaling commented out but when I add it and then do a Matrix.Invert() on the created translation matrix the result is NaN ({NaN,NaN,NaN},{NaN,NaN,NaN},...) Can anyone tell me why this is happening please? • Does the Ubuntu One sync work?

  I have been on this for several hours now, trying to get a simple second folder to sync with my (paid) account. I cannot tell you how many times I removed all devices, removed stored passwords, killed all processes of u1, logged out and back in online...and still, the tick in the file browser (Synchronize this folder) is loading and loading and loading. Also, I have logged out, rebooted countless times. And this is after me somehow managing to get the u1 preferences to finally "connect" again. I have also checked the status of your services, and none are close to what I am experiencing. And I have checked the suggested related questions above! So please, just confirm whether it is a problem on my side, or a problem on your side. EDIT: In the mean time, here is what has changed, on top of what is mentioned just above. • My files went from 0MB to 71.9MB, and is still rising. • My first folder of 400.2MB is being filled with the data as I write this. The second folder has the folder sub-structure in place. • Both folders now show in the File Browser that it will be synchronized. I believe that right now, it is all back to normal and working fine, and I guess that's what a good night's sleep can do ;). And we're now only back to the point where synchronizing is slow, but will pick up with the release of Natty (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/FAQ/WhyIsItTakingSoLongForMyFilesToSync). But to get to the questions: My about says I use 11.04, Natty Narwhal, but I am quite sure the last distribution I installed was 10.10. Folder A is 400.2MB, and Folder B is 29.5MB I am on a DSL line, behind a regular fritz.box setting. No proxy servers in use, and I did not install any particular firewall features. No physical firewall, just the router (on which I have a TV signal as well), and 2 switches to get to this floor. Status: inactive The ubuntuone-indicator runs the same window as when I click on my name on the top-right corner and select Ubuntu one, or in the Control Center choose Ubuntu one. It wasn't supposed to go further than this was it?

• Box2D Difference Between WorldCenter and Position

  So this problem has been brothering for a couple of days now. First off, what is the difference between say Body.getWorldCenter() and Body.getPosition(). I heard that WorldCenter might have to do with the center of gravity or something. Second, When I create a Box2D Body for a sprite the Body is always at the lower left corner. I check it by printing a Rectangle of 1 pixel around the box.getWorldCenter(). From what I understand the Body should be in the center of the Sprite and its bounding box should wrap around the Sprite, correct? • What is going on in this SAT/vector projection code?

For example, earlier in the code there is a calculation of the axes to be used, and these are stored as Vector2, and they are found by subtracting one point from another, however these points are also stored as Vector2s. So are the axes being stored as slopes in a single Vector2? Next, what exactly does the Vector2 produced by the vector projection code represent? That is, I know it represents the projected vector, but as it pertains to a Vector2, what does this represent? A point on a line? Finally, what does the scalar at the end actually represent? It's fine to tell me that you're getting a scalar value of the projected vector, but none of the information I can find online seems to tell me about a scalar of a vector as it's used in this context. I don't see angles or magnitudes with these vectors so I'm a little disoriented when it comes to thinking in terms of physics. If this final scalar calculation is just a dot product, how is that directly applicable to SAT from here on? Is this what I use to calculate maximum/minimum values for overlap? I guess I'm just having trouble figuring out exactly what the dot product is representing in this particular context. Clearly I'm not quite up to date on my elementary physics, but any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

• Designing Snake AI

  I'm new to this gamedev stackechange but have used the math and cs sites before. So, I'm in a competition to create AI for a snake that will compete with 3 other snakes in 5 minute rounds where the rules are much like the traditional Nokia snake game except that there are 4 snakes, the board is 50x50 and there are a number of small obstacles on the field. Like the Nokia game, your snake grows when you get to the fruit and if you crash into yourself, another snake or the wall you die. The game runs with a 50ms delay between moves and the server sends the new game state every 50ms which the code must analyze and what not and output the next move. The winner is the snake who had the longest length at any point in the game. Tie breakers are decided by kills. So far what I have done is implemented an A* graph search from each snake to determine if my snake is the closest to the apple and if it is, it goes for the apple. Otherwise, I made a neat little algorithm to determine the emptiest area of the board, which my snake goes for, to anticipate the next apple. Other than this I have some small survivability checks to ensure my snake isn't walking into a trap that it can't get out and if it does get stuck, I have something to give it a better chance of getting out. ... Anyway, I've tested my snake on a test server and it does quite well. Generally, my strategy of only going for the apple when its a sure thing and finding space when its not makes it grow faster than any other snakes (some snakes do a similar thing but often just go to the middle or a corner) sometimes it wins these trial games but is more often than not beaten by the same snake who seems to have the edge on survivability(my snake grows quicker but then dies somehow and this other snake just plods slowly along and wins on consistency. So I was wondering about any ideas anyone has to try and improve my snake. Or maybe ideas at a new approach to take. My functions and classes are good so changes that might seem drastic shouldn't be too bad. I encourage all ideas. Any thoughts ??

• How do you turn on the customizable gnome-panel features (like gnome-applets) in Precise?

  I resurrected a broken laptop today. I took out the HDD, put it in a USB 3.0 enclosure, and created a VM that would use it. It was running lucid. I took a screenshot of the desktop before I started "do-release-upgrade", because from experience, I will never have my GUI back the way I want it again. I know how to install gnome-panel to get back the "Gnome Classic" session option. I know how to put my minimize, maximize, and close buttons back in the upper-right hand corner of windows (where they belong). I know how to use gdm instead of lightdm. Unity gets worse in every version (and the other desktop OS is going to be even worse with Metro). Here's what I don't know (in order of importance): 1. How do you make the panels in gnome (gnome-panel, to be precise) customizable again (like they were in older versions of Ubuntu)? 2. How do you install applets in the panels now (right-click is now ignored)? 3. How can you customize all of the window elements (like you could in older versions of Ubuntu)? I can't remember much about maverick, natty, or oneiric (except their names), so I don't know exactly when I lost these capabilities. Edit: (no screenshot), my StackExchange reputation (on other StackExchange sites) doesn't carry over to this site, so I can't post the screenshot. Take a look at the panels in the screen hot. They are nice, compact, and VERY functional (disk mounter applet, frequently used shortcuts, workspaces, show desktop, kill window, and trash icons, etc.) Notice how small the fonts (and how little real estate they waste). You can't notice the compact title bars, fonts, and window icons in this screen shot (since I redacted the rest of the desktop), but it's the same story there. Please help. • C# Collision Math Help

  I am making my own collision detection in MonoGame. I have a PolyLine class That has a property to return the normal of that PolyLine instance. I have a ConvexPolySprite class that has a List LineSegments. I hav a CircleSprite class that has a Center Property and a Radius Property. I am using a static class for the collision detection method. I am testing it on a single line segment. Vector2(200,0) = Vector2(300, 200) The problem is it detects the collision anywhere along the path of line out into space. I cannot figure out why. • Agile team with no dedicated Tester members. Insane or efficient?

  I'm a software developer. I've been thinking a lot about the efficiency of the Software Testers I've worked with so far in my career. In fact, I've been thinking a lot about the Software Testers role in general and have reached a potentially contentious conclusion: Non-developer Software Testers staff are less efficient at software testing than developers. Now, before everyone gets upset, hear me out. This isn't mere opinion: Software Testing and Software Development both require a lot of skills in common: Problem solving Thinking about corner cases Analytical skills The ability to define clear and concise step-by-step scenarios What developers have in addition to this is the ability to automate their tests. Yes, I know non-dev testers can automate their tests too, but that often then becomes a test maintenance issue. Because automating UI tests is essentially programming, non-dev members encounter all the same difficulties software developers encounter: Copy-pasta, lack of code reusibility/maintainability, etc. So, I was wondering. Why not replace all non-dev roles with developer roles? Developers have the skills required to perform Software Testing tasks, and they have the skills to automate tests and keep them maintainable. Would the following work: Hire a bunch of developers and split them into 2 roles: Software developers Software developers doing testing (some manual, mostly automated by writing integration tests, unit tests, etc) Software developers doing application support. (I've removed this as it is probably a separate question altogether) And, in our case since we're doing Agile development, rotate the roles every sprint or two. Also, if at all possible, try to have people spend their Developer stints and Testing stints on different projects. Ideally you would want to reduce the turnover rate per rotation. So maybe you could have 2 groups and make sure the rotation cycles of the groups are elided. So, for example, if each rotation was two sprints long, the two groups would have their rotations 1 sprint apart. That way there's only a 50% turn-over rate per sprint. Am I crazy, or could this work? (Obviously a key component to this working is that all devs want to be in the 3 roles. Let's assume I'm starting a new company and I can hire these ideal people) Edit I've removed the phrase "QA", as apparently we are using it incorrectly where I work.

• Outlook 2007 unable to connect to exchange server

  I came into the office a week ago and outlook has refused to connect ever since, it just says "Disconnected" in the bottom right-hand corner. I've tried restarting it, rebooting Windows etc. I'm the only one if our office who is having this problem, so it's not a general problem with the server. Things I've tried Pinging the server via IP address and host name, both work fine Connecting via OWA, this works using the same machine name Connecting to Exchange via HTTP ("Outlook Anywhere") doesn't work None of the suggestions in this question helped, http://serverfault.com/questions/21755/can-ping-exchange-server-cant-connect-outlook-to-it Disabling Windows firewall on my laptop also has no effect. There are no items in the event viewer that indicate that anything it up. Also no permissions have changed on the server since when it worked. Update: I've just tried logging onto a completely different PC, using my domain controller user-name/password. When I setup outlook on there it also fails, so the problem isn't specific to 1 pc/outlook it's something about my particular user name, but not when using OWA? What else can I do to diagnose this, any suggestions?

  I have issue to update other rows in the same datatable when one row updated using primeface datatable in-cell edit ajax rowEdit. But failed to update other row with ajax call. The ajax response only return the same row data which was updated. • How * tag can be used in CSS?

  I'm trying to understand how a background image is used in a css button. It seems the image is much larger than the button, still the corners are matched to the button(resulting a rounded corner button). It seems it is related to .btn *. I couldn't find any reference about how * can be used. Can you explain how the image is rendered in the button, using the * tag? I assume * will match any element. • How to delete row in TTTableViewController (Three20)

  Hi, The Three20 is great library. It's making the work with tables very easy. But one gap that I noticed - is deletion of rows, with animation. I spent many hours trying to do this, and this is what I'm doing: // get current index patch UITableView* table = [super tableView]; NSIndexPath *indexPath = [table indexPathForSelectedRow]; //delete row in data source TTListDataSource * source = (TTListDataSource *)self.dataSource; [source.items removeObjectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; // delete row from the table, with animation [table deleteRowsAtIndexPaths:[NSArray arrayWithObject:indexPath] withRowAnimation:UITableViewRowAnimationFade]; After this code runs the error appears: [NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0) I'm using the class inherited from the TTTableViewController. And I doesn't implement the DataSourceDelegate or TableViewDelegate because I'm using the Three20 as much as possible.
