• Super slow time machine backup on my mac

  I just got a new 2TB drive which I'm trying to use as a time machine drive for my mac which has a 1TB drive. On my first time trying to back it up, I'm getting terrible throughput, not even 1GB per day (it's been running for 36 hours now). I erased the disk and tried to copy a large file to it and got the same slow speed. What can I do to diagnose this? Are there any tools which can inspect the disk and tell me if it's messed up? • Permanent solution to Win XP SP3 window animation removal

  Hello everyone, May I know how I can get rid of the Window Animation (seen when you minimise or maximise a window) in Windows XP Service Pack 3 Permanently?? I have tried the following two solutions: I went to the control panel---adjust visual effects--- then unchecked the "Animate windows when maximising and minimising" option. 2.I have tried using windows powertoys tweakUI to disable the animation. 3.I even tried this: Turn Off Window Animation You can shut off the animation displayed when you minimize and maximize Windows. 1. Open RegEdit 2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control panel \Desktop\ WindowMetrics 3. Create a new string value "MinAnimate". 4. Set the value data of 0 for Off or 1 for On But still no help The Big Problem is that the window animation will disappear for a while but returns again some time later. When I navigate back to the "adjust visual effects" window, the checkbox for "Animate windows when maximising and minimising" is checked again. Thank you very much

  Hi Iam looking for the best way to ensure my server ( application ) remains available for all my users (on web/LAN/WAN ), when my primary ISP link fails. My server is behind a firewall on which both my primary & secondary links land. I have already assigned multiple IPs (both ISP's static IP) to the 'A' record ( host.example.com ) in the DNS. However in a round robin scenario is there a way I can ensure that my web user will not see a "cannot dislay web page" error ever ?? What are the better methods to achieve this??

  We are currently having ~100 servers and all of them are using remote syslog, so we have aggregated all logs on one server. The most questioned problem from our support team is: Has an email from .... to ... been delivered? I'd like to give to our support team access to some logging tool and some guide for searching in logs. What would you have recommended me? Or, do you know any other alternatives to test? The problem of grepping logs is that there is not sender and recipient address on one line. So I supposed, there might by some aggregation by email id.

• Using screen to monitor non-interactive scripts (or some other solution)

  I have some autonomous scripts that run commands on remote machines over ssh. These scripts rely on getting stdout, stderr, and the return code of each command run. I want to be able to monitor the progress of the scripts on each target machine so that I can see if something has hung and possibly intervene if necessary. My initial idea was to have the scripts run commands in a screen session, so that the person monitoring could simply attach to the session with screen -x. However, it was hard to do that from a script since screen is an interactive program. I can send a command to the screen session with screen -S session -X stuff "command^M", but then I don't get the output and return code that I need back. My second idea was to put script /path/to/log in ~/.bash_profile and log the entire session to a file. Then the monitoring person could simply tail the log file. However, this doesn't provide the interactivity that I was looking for. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

  Is it really cheaper to host images and scripts via S3 than with an EC2 instance running nginx/varnish/etc. ? It seems to me (but i'm just getting started with AWS) that the request costs will be the major factor if you don't use sprites or other optimizations... or am i missing something ?

  Hello, We are developing a web application that will deal with highly sensitive (financial) data of clients (audience is medium to large sized businesses). Clients will be under scrutiny from regulators & auditors and, as such, we will be too. More importantly to give clients a level of comfort our application and related hosting arrangement should instill a lot of confidence with them. We are looking into using a cloud based service like Linode, Amazon EC2, etc. To allow for maximum flexibility We are keen on putting everything on virtual servers and avoiding having to buy our own hardware. Does a cloud based service make sense for our particular scenario? If not what type of hosting should we consider? If so what should we look out for? Thanks!

BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.

• Notepad++ FTP best solution

  Hi, I use Notepad++ for more than 2 years now, and there's only 1 thing that it needs for me to be perfect: a actually-working-ftp-plugin. It has an ftp plugin, written by someone that meanwhile left the project (by meanwhile I mean a long time ago), and since then nobody had courage to improve it. The problem is that it does't handle connections very well. Sometimes it lost connection with the server and literally "blocks", others don't save the files properly, other only load half of the ftp files, etc etc .. My question is: Is there a way to use ftp and notepad++ (without using its build-in ftp or a ftp client like filezilla)? I've tried using NetDrive, but it gets stuck sometimes (makes the editor crash), and everytime the temporary file is refreshed by windows / NetDrive, it will load the new file without asking and skip the pointer to the end of the file (very very very annoying). In case you know how to make the built-in notepad++ ftp plugin work at 100%, I'd be much more happy! I'd like to have some feedback from you guys :) (I'm using Windows Vista) Thanks in advance!

  Dear All, Please help me. I just joined a new Hospital and want some help managing my network. There are some requirements: Current Network: There is a D.S.L connection and that is terminated on a LINUX proxy and then connected to D-Link layer 2 switches and then providing internet to more then 200 PC's (Would be increasing to 1500 in couple of months). D-Link switches are not configured yet. Also there is one Database server Report server and an application server. In near Future Application should be accessed by local users as well as remote users from internet via our web server. We do have a sharing server and all these servers databases and PC's are on single sub net. Required Network: All i do want is to secure my network from outside access and just allowing specific users via web application and they will be submitting there record for patient card and appointment facility by means of application and entering there record (on our database) but not violating our network resources. Secondly in house users also need to access the same application and also internet but they must have some unique identity and rights (i.e. Finance lab dept. peoples do have limited access to that application). Notes: Should i create V LAN or break sub nets. Having a firewall will solve my issues? is a router needed on these type of scenario's. Currently all the access are restricted from Linux Proxy.   Let's say that I have a need to have a single-name space scale to multi-petabyte object store with a file system-like wrapper. What is currently out there that supports the following: Single name space that can take 1B files. Support for multiple entry points using NFS At least node level replication ( preferably node and file level replication ) Online software upgrades No "magic sauce" on the storage layer The following has been evaluated: Gluster & Lustre - just ick - fundamental lack of understanding of why online upgrades are mandatory. OneFS - we have it. It is smelling more and more like it hides a dead body under the hood. Other than MapR and zfs am I missing anything? P.S. Oh yes, I keep forgetting that the forums are for people to discuss if 2TB drive actually stores 2TB info. May bad. Seriously though - how the heck can "meets the following requirements" can be considered a "debate"? P.P.S. I did not throw an idiotic insult - i pointed out that this is actually an interesting question compared to a conversation about storage capacity of a 2TB hard drive. It is not a question of what works better - it is a question that asks did I miss any of the products that currently exist which fit the criteria where criteria is clearly outline. I got one answer below which included something that I have not looked at in a long time which looks quite a bit grown up compared to the time I briefly look at it before.

• How to make a backup VPN server?

  I have a small VPN network with a bunch of clients working mostly with each other and a VPN server. Everything works fine, except, obviously I can't shut VPN server down without breaking the network. I have a spare machine, which worked as an VPN server for the same network before so it is signed with the same SA as the first one and basically configured just the same as the first one. Technically I can make my clients work with it with little adjustment (by setting remote in etc/openpvn/clientx.conf), but it would be great make this switch automated. So basically I want two VPN servers running in the same network to work completely interchangeable without clients even knowing this. Can I do this with VPN or should I dig deeper into physical network layer?

• Solution for file store needing large number of simultaneous connections

  So I'm fairly new to large-scale architectures. We're currently using linode instances for our project, but we're brainstorming about scaling. We need a file store system than can deliver ~50mb folders (user data) to our computing instances in a reasonable amount of time (<20 sec), and scale to 10000+ total users, and perhaps 100+ simultaneous transfers. We are also unsure whether to network mount (sshfs/nfs) or just do a full transfer store-instance at the beginning and rsync instance- store at the end. I've experimented with SSH-FS between our little Linode instances but it seems to be bottlenecked at 15mb/s total bandwith, which wouldn't do under 10+ transfer stress let alone scale v. large. I also tried to investigate NFS but couldn't get it working but have little hope that it'll do within our linode network. Are there tools on other cloud providers that match our needs? Should we be mounting, or should we be transferring? Thanks very much!

  I have a laptop and a desktop I want to keep files up-to-date on both of them. I was thinking of creating a hard drive on 'server' and then changing "my documents" to that server path. It should work all right when there are two computers but what if a laptop uses wireless access at my house and more importantly, when it's connected wirelessly on a different IP range when I'm at college? For the second case, I guess, creating a VPN/remote server connection to the desktop will work, but if I want to make it automatic (my documents mapping), is there way to do that?

  Is there an easy way to set the Localizable property to true for newly created usercontrols / forms? The scope of the setting should ideally be a solution or a project. In other words I want to say that this project/solution should be localizable, and then if I add a new form or control VS should automatically set the property to true. Edit: Although custom templates are possible, in a larger team they might not be always used. So it's more about enforcing a policy, ensuring that the team members do not ommit to set the property for the projects/solutions where it is a requirement that all forms/controls containing text resources should be localizable. Note: Team Foundation Server is not an Option.

• Structure of NAnt build scripts and solution structure on build server

  We're in the process of streamlining/automating build, integration and unit testing as well as deployment. Our software is developed in Visual Studio where we have use both C# and VB.NET in our projects. A single project can be contained within multiple solutions (i.e. Utils project is used in both ProductA and ProductB solutions) For historical reasons our code repository isn't as well structured as one could have hoped for. E.g. Utils project might be located under ProductA solution (because that's were it was first used) but it was later deemed useful for productB development and merely just included into the solution of productB (but still located in a subdirectory of productA). I would like to use continous integration testing and have setup a CC.NET build server where I intend to use NAnt for creating the actual builds. Question 1: How should I structure my builds on the buildserver? Should I instruct CC.NET to retrieve all the projects for productB into a single library e.g. a file structure similar to -ProductB --Utils --BetterUtils --Data or should I opt for a filestructure similar to this -ProductA --Utils -ProductB --BetterUtils --Data and then just have the NAnt build scripts handle the references? Our references in VS doesn't match the actual location in the code repository so it's not possible today to just check-out productB solution and build it straight away (unfortunately). I hope this question makes sense? Question 2: Is it better to check out all the source code located in different projects into a single file folder (whilst retaining some kind of structure) and then build every thing at once or have multiple projects in CC.NET and then let the CC.NET server handle dependencies? Example: Should I have a seperate project in CC.NET for monitoring the automated build/test of Utils project when it's never released on it's own? Or should I just build/test it whilst building it as part of ProductB? I hope the above makes sense and that you can provide me with some arguments for using either option. We're nowhere near an ideal source code repository structure and I would prefer if I can resolve the lack of repository structure on the build server instead of having to clean up the structure of our repository. Switching away from VSS is (unfortunately) not an option. Right now our build consists of either deploying via VS clickonce or pressing F5 so just getting the build automated would be a huge step up for us. Thanks

• Need advice on organizing two WPF applications within one Visual Studio solution

  I have a WPF application (KaleidoscopeApplication) organized as follows: Solution (6 projects) Cryptography (DLL) Rfid (DLL) KaleidoscopeApplication (buildable "startup project") Basically, KaleidoscopeApplication contains a bunch of resources (sounds, images, etc) and your standard WPF junk (App.xaml, App.xaml.cs, other xaml and code). I need to create a new application that is very similar to Kaleidoscope, but I'm not sure of the best way to organize. This new app will need access to much of the same code and resources as Kaleidoscope. Preferably, I would like to create a new project in the solution, then simply use the "set as startup project" to pick which app I want to build. However, will I be able to access (share) the Resources folder of Kaleidoscope? I know I will be able to access much of the code if I simply add a reference to the project and include a "using Kaleidoscope". But the resources I'm not so sure about. Is this the right way to organize or am I asking for trouble in the future? Thanks in advance!
