  I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

• Remote Desktop to home server: From mac gives english keyboard layout, from pc gives norwegian layou

  I'm trying to connect to my home server from my mac, but struggle with typing the password, which contains a plus sign. I have a norwegian keyboard layout, and when I log in from windows (via wmware), I get a norwegian keyboard at the logon screen, but when I connect directly from the mac, I get a english keyboard layout, which makes it impossible to type my password... Why does it give me a different layout for the mac? How can I type a plus sign? The key that should give me a plus sign if the keyboard was english, is the key that contains the ´ and `, and using this button doesn't give me anything in the login prompt... regards, -Vegar

• Which VNC for Mac to WinXP Home control?

  Hi, all. I've got a MacBook and a Windows XP Home machine. I'd like to be able to connect into the XP machine from the Mac over VNC, but not through the Web method, where performance seems to be a bit iffy. I've done some research, and it seems everyone is interested in the XP-Mac connection, where I'm looking to go in the other direction. • 'DNS server isn't responding' error in windows 7 home premium

  Hi All, I bought a brand new Dell Studio 1558 just last week. It has windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed on it. My friend who is occupying the adjacent room has a laptop with windows XP. Both of us are connecting to the same wireless router of the hotel. My friend is able to connect to the wireless network without any trouble, but when I try to connect, I get the error "DNS service isn't responding". I get this error when I run the troubleshooting option. I met two more people in the same hotel with win XP laptop and they too dont have any problem. I have gone to possibly all the forums and website but I haven't been able to fix this error :(. I have done all the basic troubleshooting but I have no luck yet. Pls help. • Cannot ssh anymore into FreeBSD 7.2 home server

  Somehow sshd stopped running and no amount of start, restart or onestart will make it go again. I normally ssh into it from a dual-boot laptop computer that shows up on the network as gabi-buntu when running Ubuntu Karmic, and as gabi-pc when running Windows XP Pro. Neither my Putty connection nor the Linux terminal can establish a ssh link anymore. Upon rebooting the server, I am greeted with "/etc/rc: WARNING: run_rc_command: cannot run /usr/sbin/sshd". In addition, a message will appear saying things like rpc.statd: failed to contact host gabi-buntu RPC: port mapper failure RPC: timed out Everything else works fine. The FreeBSD 7.2 box runs a print server, a Samba server, and an Apache server for the home wiki, via https. It also serves up NFS shares for Linux clients. Any suggestions? Thank you, Gabi Huiber

I've heard around, that I can access another PC in network by address like "Router IP:port number". Am I right or i got it wrong? So how do I configure router to let connections to certain ports?   I have a Thomson 585V6 router which has built in voip support. I want to be able to use a softphone to make calls. for example phone my dad's mobile. Any incomming calls to my normal bt number should be taken via my pc as well. What I have done so far: I've wired the pstn port on the router to the telephone jack. The router is connected to my pc. I have installed asterisk on the pc I want to take calls on. The sip client authenticates to the sip server. output from twinkle: Sun 22:46:45 home, registration succeeded (expires = 3600 seconds) how do I take external calls/ answer incoming calls from pstn?

  I am a long time Mac user and I'm now using a Ubuntu machine for development, and while I'm more or less used to a lot of the keyboard shortcuts, one thing I can't get used to is using the 'Home' and 'End' keys to move around lines of text. On a Mac you use "Command + right arrow" to go to the end of a line and "Command + left arrow" to go to the beginning. Is there a way to enable this kind of functionality in Linux? I'm not sure if this would be considered remapping, keyboard shortcuts, or what...

  i accidentally deleted the recovery folder on the recovery partition (win vista home) i think it was some sort of scheduled maintenance of some program that i did not configure properly? oops... lol i called toshiba and they said i needed to buy a recovery program, which i didnt bother doing. I bought a legal copy of vista and would like to install the correct files and in a way that when my computer starts looking for files it will eventually find them or i can point to the partition. i'm pretty sure it's not a matter of copy and paste (is it?) thanks Paul

  my goal is to set up a VPN on a Windows machine that contains my iTunes library then connect to that VPN with my iPhone and be able to utilize Home Sharing remotely. I have read that this can easily be set up if the iTunes library is on a Mac (Network Beacon and YazSoft ShareTool are two products I quickly found). I can't find anyone who has had success on a Windows machine, though. In my thinking, there are two options (aside from buying a Mac): 1.) Existing utility that takes care of this for me (like the Mac-only options listed above) and is compatible with iPhone (Hamachi is NOT compatible with iPhone VPN) 2.) Manually configure a VPN to allow Bonjour multicast (can't find any information on this) FYI my router is a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.28

  Is there a proper and permanent fix that will restore the display of Chinese Characters on a Windows 7 Home Premium Laptop computer? This problem has been occurring frequently now and a simple reboot no longer does the trick. The square boxes viewed on many applications and websites has been constantly bothering me and I wish to fix it asap. I have done a lot of research on it but have not been successful. Many responses were to install the language packs for Windows 7 Ultimate Users which apparently is not my case or to configure the "Region and Language" settings of the Control Panel, changing the system locale. Does anyone have any suggestions? All would be appreciated!

  I'm aware of how to use VNC to share screens or grant remote control of your machine over the internet by using VNC or one of the web-based "go to my pc" type services. If two computers are connected to a router (i.e. standard home network), is there an easier way of viewing and controlling one computer from the other? I'd like to avoid going outside the LAN, onto the internet, then back in if possible. Both machines are Windows XP, but I'm not looking for Remote Desktop by the way.

  I have a bunch of home movies that don't have useful filenames because they came straight off the camera. (I'm using Vista 64, by the way.) Picasa is pretty good for browsing through them and watching them, but it doesn't use my video card for rendering the videos. My CPU gets pegged at max usage, and full screen barely works. Windows Media Player or Quicktime works fine. Is there another application (like Picasa) that can be used for browsing through movies that both uses my video card and shows thumbnails of all the movies in my collection? I'd rather have something nicer than Windows Explorer. (The movies are h.264 AAC 1280x720.)

• How can I set up an FTP user with a home directory inside another user's home folder?

  Hi I have an Ubuntu (Hardy) server which I am using to host multiple websites. All of the sites are stored in subfolders of a public_html folder for my main login to the server and accessed via a single SSH account. I now have a website user who wants FTP (or similar) access to enable them to upload various files etc to the directory where their website is situated, however I still need the SSH account to have access to this directory as I may need to make changes using my master account. Basically I want to create an FTP account (I have VSFTPD installed) for a user with the home directory inside my own user account but they should only be able to read/write to this folder or its subfolders but not go further up the directory tree. How can I achieve this? Thanks

• Setting up Multiple Routers (as Hardware Firewalls) behind a Home Router

  I’ve currently got one computer behind a router with built-in firewall functionality, connected to a home cable-modem that has a single Ethernet port and one IP. I’m going to have to set up another computer for the rest of the family to use which of course will need to be connected to the Internet, probably wirelessly since the modem is in my room and the new system would not be. What I would like to do is to get two more small routers with firewall capability and connect each computer to a router, which would in turn connect to the main router which connects to the cable-modem. That way, both systems have a hardware firewall protecting them (particularly the wireless system) and the burden of blocking would be reduced on both the computer CPUs and the main router because the secondary routers would handle some of the workload. I’m trying to find out about the complexities inherent in this design and how I could set it up to work, specifically the IP handling and NAT aspect. Thanks a lot.

• Windows Vista Home memory usage problem

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

  Hi, Is it possible to run an email server on my home box using dynamic dns? The scenario is, I want to auto cc all incoming and outgoing emails from my one account to another, from some server side config instead of configuring email clients for rules. I have tried Google Apps Mail but it doesn't allow auto cc of outgoing emails. After having read tons of blogs, forum messages etc (hope I have been reading the correct info :) ) the only option to achieve what I am needing is to setup my own mail server, but the cost of getting a static IP doesn't fit my budget. • Installer can't create shortcuts - Vista Home Premium

  Suddenly, whenever I try to install something new on my system, all goes well until it gets to the point of creating Start Menu icons. At this point, I get an alert saying that the installer doesn't have permission to access the Start Menu folder, and my only options are Ignore, which just keeps triggering the same alert, and Cancel, which totally undoes the installation. I've tried disabling UAC (which is a feature I detest anyway), and running the installer as administrator from a R-click. Neither works. I also have 8 subfolders under my c:\users folder with various names, som of which I can look into and some which I cant. I have no idea where all this stuff came from, since I have a personal PC for home use and nobody uses it but me. Any suggestions, anyone? Thanx, T.E.Ponta

• Vista Home Premium won't upload

  Hi, I have a sony vaio laptop(VGN-FW31J) running windows Vista Home Premium . I've had it over a year and file upload in a browser has never worked on any website in any browser(IE, Firefox, Chrome). I can select a file and the upload starts running but I always get a timeout. Sometimes it has worked once out of many attempts but only if the file is very small( < 50k). FTP does work. I've tried the following: Disabling anti virus Disabling firewall Can anyone help me here? i'm wondering if this is a vista problem or a vaio problem. Cheers
