• Solaris cc segfaults when compiling rsync on intel platform

  I am trying to compile rsync-3.0.7 on Solaris 5.10 on an Intel chipset. • Semantic Form Markup for Yes or No Questions

  I frequently receive mock-ups of HTML forms with the following prototype: Some long winded yes or no question?   (o) Yes   ( ) No The (o) and ( ) in this prototype represent radio buttons. My personal view is that if the question has only a true or false value then it should be a check box. That said, I have seen this sort of "layout" from almost every designer I've ever worked with. If I were not to question their decision, or question the client's decision, I'd probably mark it up like this: <p class="pseudo_label">Some long winded yes or no question?</p> <input type="radio" name="the_question" id="the_question_yes" value="1"> <label for="the_question_yes" class="after_radio">Yes</label> <input type="radio" name="the_question" id="the_question_no" value="0"> <label for="the_question_no" class="after_radio">No</label> I really don't want to do that. I want to push back and convince them that this should really be a check box and not two radio buttons. But my question is, if I can't convince them – you're welcome to help me try – how should I code that original design requirement such that it is semantic and at least understandable for screen reader users? If I were able to convince my tormentors to change their minds, I would likely code it in the following fashion: <label for="the_question">Some long winded yes or no question?</label> <input type="checkbox" name="the_question" id="the_question" value="1"> What do you think about this issue? • TIME column in TOP command for mysql

  When I run top on my database server I get that mysqld has been running for 4:00.51 and it continues to go up. I assume this means that one process with mysql has been running this long from other posts on here. Its not set to cumulative mode as best I can tell as the heading looks like it would change to CTIME if that be the case. What I'm wondering is if this is normal for a site that makes a lot of individual connections using PHP. I shouldn't have any long running processes that would hold on to a mysql connection for this long, only seconds at most. Am I incorrect to assume that this time relates to one connection/process running? I think usually I see it flash up and away on the TOP, not just stay there with this number increasing.

• Why does this game loop stop my process from responding?

  I implemented a fixed time step loop for my C# game. All it does at the moment is make a square bounce around the screen. The problem I'm having is that when I execute the program, I can't close it from the window's close button and the cursor is stuck on the "busy" icon. I have to go into Visual Studio and stop the program manually. • Windows hangs on Rename, Delete and Move for specific MKV files

  I have been googling this issue for a long time, and no full solutions seem to be out there. For certain mkv files, windows hangs when moving, copying, or deleting. These files play fine in a player such as GOM player. System: a fast windows 7, 64 bit box. Results: CPU change is negligible Memory usage rockets up to ~100% In cased of delete or move, "discovering files" dialogue box stays up for a long time Rename simply shows spinning icon until it finishes Action is completed after EXTREMELY long amount of time Memory usage does not return to normal "Fixes:" Disable thumbnail creation (helps for some cases) After move/rename/delete kill explorer with taskmanager, and relaunch to re-claim your memory Even with the thumbnails turned off, the issue persists. I have also tried re-muxing a file, which worked fine, but still resulted in a file with the same above issues.

Does this include the how long it take to accomplish tasks such as: Server side code for the site logic with one language or multiple php,asp,asp.net. Client side code like javascript with jquery for ajax, menus and other interactivity Page layout, html, css (color, fonts (but I have no artistic sense!)) The needs of the site and how it will work (planning) How can i judge how long it will take to complete a website? The site has CMS for adding and editing news, products, articles on the experience of the company. Also, they can edit team work, add Recreational Activities and a logo gallery with compressed psd download, and send messages to cpanel and to email. You are starting from scratch except JQuery and PHPmailer. How can I estimate how long the job will take, and how can I calculate the required time to finish any new projects? I'm so sorry for many scattered questions, but I'm in my first experiment and I want to take benefits from the great experience of those who have it.

• Determinism in multiplayer simulation with Box2D, and single computer

  I wrote a small test car driving multiplayer game with Box2D using TCP server-client communcations. I ran 1 instance of server.exe and 2 instance of client.exe on the same machine that I code and compile the executables. I type inputs (WASD for a simple car movement) into one of the 2 clients and I can get both clients to update the simulation. There are 2 cars in the simulation. As long as the cars do not collide, I get the same identical output on both client.exe. I can run the car(s) around for as long as I could they still update the same. However, if I start to collide the cars, very quickly they go out of sync. My tools: Windows 7, C++, MSVS 2010, Box2D, freeGlut. (For any deterministic engine) Determinism is gauranteed if playback of recorded inputs is on the same machine with exe compiled using same compiler and machine. Additionally my server.exe and client.exe gameloop is single thread with blocking socket calls and fixed time step. Question: Can anyone explain what I did wrong to get different Box2D output?

• have ffmpeg scan and report correct time

  I am encoding a section of a song. I used -ss offset -t 30 (duration). When i use -i file.acc i see it says the audio is 31, 32 and once 36 seconds long. Opening it in vlc showed it as 30sec after a few seconds of playback. My code needs to filter sounds more then 30 seconds. I can fudge it and allow 30.99 (maybe 20.48 is better) however 2 seconds too long is not good and i would need to filter this out even though playback is 30seconds long. How do i get ffmpeg to scan the file and report an accurate time?

• I used a 301 Permanent Redirect to a 3rd party site by mistake! Can I stop the redirection?

  Oh Noes! I've been parking a domain name for a friend/client of mine on my hosting provider (Dreamhost, FWIW) for a while, and they eventually asked me to redirect their domain to a 3rd party website which is currently featuring some relevant promotional content. Once this period ends, we will probably go ahead and set up a proper website for the domain on my hosting account. I used Dreamhost's "redirect" hosting option in their domain configuration panel, not realizing that it would implement a 301 Permanent redirect, or what the implications were. Now it seems that for any client that has visited the site anytime recently, the 301 redirect is still cached/in effect, although I have changed the domain settings back to regular Dreamhost full site hosting. It seems that the only thing that can be done is to wait out the TTL/cache expiration for the redirect. I have no idea how long that might be, so I'm wondering if there is any good way to cache-bust the redirect or otherwise undo its long-term effects. I put a simple html meta refresh in the domain folder to replace the 301 to keep the intended functionality in place, but I'm still not able to access the domain's other content normally, even via FTP, etc. Isn't there anything I can do? Otherwise, how long does it take for a cached redirect to expire? It's gonna be a bummer if it's really permanent.

• How can I guess if a USB cable will power my devices?

  I've had problems with one long (4 meter) USB Mini-B to USB Type-A cable not being able to boot a 2.5'' external hard disc due to not supplying enough current. On top of that, the cable used a Type-A to Mini-B adapter for the Mini-B part, which probably made things worse. Three different shorter cables I got around made the hard disk work without extra current, so it was definitively the cable's fault. However, if I plugged the hard disk to the power, and used the long cable just for data it worked. Here is some related information on powering through USB cables: http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/usb_stuff.html I have not any long cables that don't have an intermediary Type-A to Mini-B adapter to try them out. My question is: is there a way to guess if a cable will provide enough power for charge/disk drive power? Is it related to the length of the cable, to the build quality of the cable, or the fact that uses intermediary adapters?

• Sharing My Thoughts on Space Flight

  This went out in the DBA newsletter from Red Gate, but I enjoyed writing it so much, I thought I'd share it to a wider audience: I grew up watching the US space program. I watched men walk on the moon for the first time in 1969, when I was only six years old. From that moment on, I dreamed of going into space. I studied aeronautics and tried to get into the Air Force Academy, all in preparation for my long career as an astronaut. Clearly, that didn't quite work out for me. But it sure could for you. At Red Gate, we're running a new contest: DBA in Space. The prize is a sub-orbital flight. When I first got word of this contest, my immediate response was, "And you need me to go right away and do a test flight? Excellent!" No, no test flight needed, plus I was pretty low on the list of volunteers. "That's OK, I'll just enter." Then I was told that, as a Red Gate employee, I couldn't win. My next response was, "I quit".eventually, I was talked down off the ledge, and agreed to help make this special for some other DBA. Many (most?) of us are science fiction fans, either the soft science of Star Trek and Star Wars, or the hard science of Niven and Pournelle, or Allen Steele. We watched the Shuttles go up and land. We've been dreaming of our own trips into orbit and our vacation-home on the Moon for a long, long time. • Blind As a Bat in Multi-Monitor Hell &ndash; Free Program Inside!

  If you know me personally, then you probably know that I am going blind thanks to a rare genetic eye disease.  My eye disease has already been a huge detriment to my eyesight.  One of the big things to suffer is my ability to see small things moving fast right in front of me.  On a multi-monitor setup, this makes finding the cursor absolute hell. The Problem I’ll keep this short, as I’ve basically already told you what the problem is.  On my three monitor development computer, I am constantly losing the mouse during the day.  I had used the Microsoft accessibility mousefinder (press CTRL, and it pings around the mouse).  The problem with this is, there is only an effect around 50-100 PX around the mouse, and it is a very light gray, almost unnoticeable.. For someone like me, if I am not looking at the monitor when I click the CTRL button, I have to click it multiple times and dart my eyes back and forth in a futile attempt to catch a glimpse of the action…  I had tried other cursor finders, but none I liked… The Solution So what’s a guy to do when he doesn’t like his options?  MAKE A NEW OPTION…  What else should we as developers do, am I right?  So, I went ahead and made a mousefinder of my own, with 6 separate settings to change the effect.  I am releasing it here for anyone else that may also have problems finding their mouse at times. Some of its features include: Multiple options to change to achieve the exact effect you want. If your mouse moves while it is honing in, it will hone in on its current position. Many times, I would press the button and move my mouse at the same time, and many times, the mouse happened to be at a screen edge, so I would miss it. This program will restart its animation on a new screen if the mouse changes its screen while playing. Tested on Windows 7 x64 Stylish color changing from green to red. Deployed as a ClickOnce, so easy to remove if you don't like it. Press Right CTRL to trigger effect Application lives in notification area so that you can easily reach configuration or close it. To get it to run on startup, copy its application shortcut from its startmenu directory to the “Startup” folder in your startmenu. Conclusion I understand if you don’t download this…  You don’t know me and I don’t know you.  I can only say that I have honestly NOT added any virus’ or malware to the package. • Opinion: Passwords as a concept are completely broken

  One thing you get to do as you get older, or have been around the industry for a long time, is to pontificate. My pet topic today is passwords. I think that they are, as a concept, now completely broken and have been for a long time. We tell users:1. Pick something really complex2. Don't write it down3. Change it regularly4. Use a different password for each site, and often each role that you hold in each site5. Deal with the fact that we apply different rules for passwords on each siteetc, etc.Is this even humanly possible? I don't think it is. Yet we blame the users when "they" get it wrong. How can they be getting it wrong when we design a system that requires super-human ability to comply. (These guys are potential exceptions: http://www.worldmemorychampionships.com/) We are the ones that are getting it wrong and it's long overdue that we, as an industry, need to apply our minds to fixing it, instead of assuming that users should just deal with it.

• bash terminal/console strange overlapping behavior

  I am using gnome-terminal in Ubuntu 11.10 and seem to get long lines overlapping in the terminal window. When I copy a long command line and paste it into the terminal, the text gets overlapped to the start of the line and often covers the user prompt. If I resize the terminal window, making it wider the overlapping gets undone and everything looks normal. In previous versions of Ubuntu, if a line was too long it would continue on the next line below. Another problem I have noticed that may be related, is when using the up arrow key to show previously typed commands, sometimes instead of the output command line being replaced by the previous command each time the key is pressed, the lines get partially merged. A portion of the old line remains, and the next command gets joined onto the end. This leftover part of a command is persistent and does not get replaced next time the key is pressed, although the insertion point or blinking cursor is at the end of the latest recalled command, and the leftover has no effect if I press enter. Is this problem a bug or some setting that needs fixing? Where do I look for the cause? keyboard? gnome-terminal? bash? Thank you for any help or suggestions offered

• Can a GPO Startup Script starts a background process and exit immediately?

  I have Googled, and not yet found an answer. Scenario: One of my GPOs have a Startup Script that takes a long time to finish. For some reasons, we have to run the scripts synchronously. Naturally, this causes slow startup time (sometimes as long as 15 minutes!) before the Logon screen appears. After profiling and analyzing the perpetrator script, I conclusively determined that the step where it's taking a long time to finish will not affect the result of the succesive GPOs. In other words, that particular step (and all steps afterwards) can run in the background. My Question: Is it possible for the Startup Script to just 'trigger' another script/program that will run to completion even when the Startup Script exits? That is, the "child processes" of the Startup Script continues to live even when the Startup Script's process ends? Additional Info: The Domain Controllers are 2008 and 2008 R2's. The workstations are Windows XP.

• Using Private Extension Galleries in Visual Studio 2012

Microsoft releases new cool features in the form of extensions and the list of 3rd party extensions that plug into Visual Studio just keeps growing. One of the nice things about the VSIX extensions is how they are deployed. Microsoft hosts a public Visual Studio Gallery where you can upload extensions and make them available to the rest of the community. Visual Studio checks for updates to the installed extensions when you start Visual Studio, and installing/updating the extensions is fast since it is only a matter of extracting the files within the VSIX package to the local extension folder. But for custom, enterprise-specific extensions, you don’t want to publish them online to the whole world, but you still want an easy way to distribute them to your developers and partners. This is where Private Extension Galleries come into play. In Visual Studio 2012, it is now possible to add custom extensions galleries that can point to any URL, as long as that URL returns the expected content of course (see below).Registering a new gallery in Visual Studio is easy, but there is very little documentation on how to actually host the gallery. Visual Studio galleries uses Atom Feed XML as the protocol for delivering new and updated versions of the extensions. This MSDN page describes how to create a static XML file that returns the information about your extensions. This approach works, but require manual updates of that file every time you want to deploy an update of the extension. Wouldn’t it be nice with a web service that takes care of this for you, that just lets you drop a new version of your VSIX file and have it automatically detect the new version and produce the correct Atom Feed XML? Well search no more, this is exactly what the Inmeta Visual Studio Gallery Service does for you :-) Here you can see that in addition to the standard Online galleries there is an Inmeta Gallery that contains two extensions (our WIX templates and our custom TFS Checkin Policies). These can be installed/updated i the same way as extensions from the public Visual Studio Gallery. Installing the Service Download the installler (Inmeta.VSGalleryService.Install.msi) for the service and run it. The installation is straight forward, just select web site, application pool and (optional) a virtual directory where you want to install the service.   Note: If you want to run it in the web site root, just leave the application name blank Press Next and finish the installer. Open web.config in a text editor and locate the the <applicationSettings> element Edit the following setting values: FeedTitle This is the name that is shown if you browse to the service using a browser. Not used by Visual Studio BaseURI When Visual Studio downloads the extension, it will be given this URI + the name of the extension that you selected. This value should be on the following format: http://SERVER/[VDIR]/gallery/extension/ VSIXAbsolutePath This is the path where you will deploy your extensions. This can be a local folder or a remote share. You just need to make sure that the application pool identity account has read permissions in this folder Save web.config to finish the installation Open a browser and enter the URL to the service. It should show an empty Feed page:   Adding the Private Gallery in Visual Studio 2012 Now you need to add the gallery in Visual Studio. This is very easy and is done as follows: Go to Tools –> Options and select Environment –> Extensions and Updates Press Add to add a new gallery Enter a descriptive name, and add the URL that points to the web site/virtual directory where you installed the service in the previous step   Press OK to save the settings. • Why no Win16 support in 64-bit Windows?

  My understanding (from Wikipedia) is that the x64 instruction set supports executing 16-bit protected mode code from long mode, but cannot execute real mode code without being switched out of long mode because long mode lacks virtual 8086 mode. Therefore, it stands to reason that real mode DOS apps can't be run in Win64 w/o software emulation or dynamic translation. However, why was support for Win16 protected-mode apps excluded when support for them seems (at least at first glance) to be reasonably implementable and is included in newer versions of Win32? Was it just a matter of demand not being high enough to justify implementation costs (and the win32 version was already implemented), or is there a good technical reason?

• Windows: Should I install Server or stick with regular?

  I hope somebody can help me solve my dilemma. I have my home PC (using Windows 7) which I use for both work and leisure (gaming, surfing, movies etc.) I tend to never turn it off, only when I must reboot because some installation requires me to or when the power gets lost. But, sometimes Windows starts acting weird (usually after the long period of system uptime), per example eats up randomly all the space on my system partition etc. which is solved after the reset by itself. I was thinking to switch to Windows Server, I guess that it is more optimized for long uptime, well, obviously it is meant for use on servers. Can somebody with more experience with this help me decide is it worth it, will it solve these issues connected with long uptime periods? Thanks in advance.

• How to restore/change Alt+Tab behaviour/ram usage and a few other things after Ubuntu upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10?

  I use Ubuntu for programming. I recently updated it from 11.04 to 11.10. There are some things I don't like in the new version of Unity desktop interface. I don't actually know if it is hard to restore previous behavior or not, and if it is not, where should I look to do that. I know a bit of programming, but I really don't know much about Linux settings. I used to have 3-6 terminal windows and switch between them with Alt+Tab and Shift+Alt+Tab. I liked half-transparent terminal windows, since with them I could open web-page with some instruction in Firefox, press Alt+Tab and type commands in a console window, being able to recognize text on a web-page under it. Now I have problems with my usual work-style because of the following. List of "negative" changes Alt+Tab shows just one icon for all console windows. When I wait some time, it, however, shows all windows, but I don't like to wait. I prefer to remember order of windows and press Alt+Tab as many times as I need to switch to the right window. Alt+Shift+Tab to switch in reverse order doesn't work now. Console windows are not transparent any more. When I don't wait, and switch to this icon, it shows all console windows altogether. So even if they were transparent, I wouldn't be able to see anything below them (I can read something only from the window, which is directly under current one, not a few levels under). When I run a few console windows in Unity I had 740Mb used on Ubuntu 11.04, but I have 1050Mb now. The question is how to make it back to 750-. I really need my memory, since I use my computer to work with 1512Mb of data and I try to save every 10Mb possible (if it doesn't take too much of machine and, more importantly, my time). When I press "The Super key" I have a field to type the name of the program I want to run. But now it sometimes shows this field, but when I'm trying to type nothing happens. Probably, focus is not on the right field. I don't really mean to restore exactly the same behavior, but I want to make my work in Ubuntu 11.10 efficient (at least as efficient as in Ubuntu 11.04). I would be happy if there are some ways to accomplish that. What have I tried I have installed CompizConfig Settings Manager. I have read this question. However enabling "Static Application Switcher" makes Alt+Tab crazy: after enabling it It says about key-binding conflicts with "Ubuntu Unity Plugin"; "Alt+Tab" switching doesn't change, but "Shift+Alt+Tab" now works and shows all windows; Memory usage increases. I have tried turning off Ubuntu Unity Plugin, but this doesn't seem right thing to do, since it seems to turn off all menus, a lot of keystrokes and app-launcher, which usually activates with "The Super key". I have found, that window transparency can be enabled by "Opacity, Brightness and Saturation" plugin from Accessibility. However I don't know if enabling it is the right thing to do (at least it increases memory usage). Update: everything solved but #3: see my own answer below. I have made a separate question about issue #3 (transparency).

• Display file/folder/drive names in full on the desktop

  In Mac OS X, when the text for a desktop icon is particularly long, it's displayed with an ellipsis: How do I configure whatever I'm supposed to configure (Finder?) to display that and all text in full? (No ellipses, please!) Edit: I do know that you can change the icon/text/grid size to allow for more text, but I don't necessarily want to change those settings. I want to change how Apple displays the text. That is, I want it to display either as one long string (which will run into other strings if two long file/folder names are next to each other, they will appear to overlap) or word-wrapped according to the size of the grid.
