How do I use Compiz on Linux to achieve what WinSplit revolution does on Windows?

Hi there, I've used WinSplit Revolution for quite some time on Windows and have become attached to it. I'm now trying out a Linux OS (Ubuntu 10.04) and would really like to get the same functionality back again. After searching on the net I found a "grid" plugin (http://wiki.compiz.org/Plugins/Grid) for compiz which says that it was inspired by WinSplit revolution. I haven't installed the Grid plugin yet, because under the install section on that page, it says "Note that grid is now included in compiz so you're unlikely to need to fetch from git unless you've an old version of compiz", which would seem to suggest that the grid functionality has now been built into compiz somewhere. The thing is, I don't know where to find it in the CompizConfig Settings Manager nor how to set it up. All I want to have happen is that I get identical functionality to WinSplit revolution, where I press Ctrl + Alt + [some numpad key] to position a window on a screen and press Ctrl + Alt + [left or right arrow] to shift a window between dual screens.

Sharepoint 2007: Edit vs Read Only Mode

Sorry about the title, dont' really know what it should be. If I open a doc in read only mode I'm able to press save and then it opens up a save as box and the default directory is the directory on the sharepoint server and if you press save you save it to the server. This actually makes the whole process not really "read only" mode since I could actually update the document. Is there a way to prevent this from happening so that if someone chooses read only there is no way possible to updload any changes back to the sharepoint site? Also, it has been suggested as a solution to get rid of the edit/read only option so that people have to check out the document. Is there a way to remove the edit/read only option on documents?

Windows 7 64bit making users login twice after waking up from sleep

I have a few Windows 7 clients exhibiting this strange behavior when my users try to login to a domain. For the issue to occur then pc must have been asleep for about an hour or more, then a user will press Alt+Crtl+Del and enter their credentials. Once they try to login the screen will go black for a couple of seconds and then go back to initial screen prompting the user to press Alt+Crtl+Del again. After entering their credentials a second time, the user can login normally and continue to do so until the pc has been asleep for over an hour. Any ideas?

Citrix ICA Client on Mac shift key doesn't work as expected.

When I'm connected to a Windows XP computer from my Mac OS X 10.6 using the Citrix ICA Client, it seems that the shift key only works for the first letter typed after pressing shift. In order to type multiple uppercase letters, like ICA, I must either press caps lock, or press and release shift before each character. I've tried switching between standard and enhanced keyboard, as well as the 'Send Special Keys Unchanged' option, but none of these seem to affect the issue. The problem doesn't occur when I switch from the Citrix window to a regular Mac window.

Any way to fix alphabetical selection behavior in list widgets in Windows?

In every version of Windows I've ever used (95 through Vista), the following apparent bug has been present in every list widget, whether drop-down, multi-select, or Explorer folder view: If you use the keyboard to select some item alphabetically, the selection gets "locked" on that item. If I have a list with the contents below, and I press D, then Delta will get selected. At this point, pressing A, B, or G will do nothing unless I first switch focus to another window or control, or remove focus by pressing Esc. If, at the beginning, I press G, then I can keep pressing G to cycle through the Gamma entries, but A, B, or D will do nothing unless I clear the focus. Alpha Beta Beta2 Delta Gamma Gamma2 Gamma3 I don't think I've seen this aggravating behavior on OS X, KDE, or Gnome shells, and I can't imagine why this behavior would be "by design." Does anyone know anything about this bug or how to get around it?

My Macbook Pro doesn't give any reaction when pressing the power button

An hour ago I closed the display my Macbook Pro. it goes into sleep mode. After dinner I returned, opened the display and wanted to continue with my work, but I recognized it was switched off completely. I tried to press the power button and received nothing. I also noticed that the green light on the power supply plug which is plugged into my Macbook is off. Same thing with a power supply from the Mac of a friend of mine. What could I try? Some suggestions? What could be the problem here?? I already tried using the battery to start, no success, also taking the battery out completely, no success. Even if I press the small button for showing the current battery charge, none of the leds starts. It's like the Mac is completely dead.

How to reset password for Dell PowerConnect 2708?

I do as the user manual says and press "Managed Mode" button to get into unmanaged mode and then press "Managed Mode" button again for managed mode. This should reset the device to factory defaults and username "Admin" with no password. However, the device resets (I think) and I can access the web console from IP 192.168.2.1, but the username and password doesn't work. Maybe the device doesn't reset after all. Or the username/password has been changed in some firmware upgrade? What should I do to get into management of this switch?

Bind shift-tab to complete-backward in fish

I found myself using the auto-complete functionality of the fish-shell, where pressing tab twice or more cycles through the suggestions. But then I accidentaly pressed tab once to many, and I wanted to go back to the previous suggestion, so I pressed shift-tab, which only appended [z to the command. For example, when I type cd D<tab><tab>: ~> cd Desktop/ I press <tab>, result: ~> cd Documents/ Now when I press <shift+tab>, the prompt changes to ~> cd Documents/[Z instead of returning to the desired: ~> cd Desktop/ How do I do this (preferably using the fish_user_key_bindings.fish file)? The documentation only provides the special function complete.

permutations gone wrong

I have written code to implement an algorithm I found on string permutations. What I have is an arraylist of words ( up to 200) and I need to permutate the list in levels of 5. Basically group the string words in fives and permutated them. What I have takes the first 5 words generates the permutations and ignores the rest of the arraylist? Any ideas appreciated. WinXP keyboard input repeat rate problem

I have problem similar to http://superuser.com/questions/33981/problems-with-kvm-switch-and-keyboard-repeat-rate-on-windows-xp: When I press and hold some key it's repeated random number of times, after that repeat stops and I need to release key and press it again to make repeat continue. If there's simultaneous sound playback and repeat is stopped, sound's stuck while I hold key with unpleasant drumming as if there's some audio problem. This issue is reproducible in WinXP Safe Mode. On the same config under Linux there's no issue. My config: List item PS/2 Logitech Keyboard USB Mouse MB M3A/H-HDMI WinXP Pro English SP2 with added Russian layout (WinXP loads via GRUB2) Realtek audio drivers for AC97 Thanks for your suggestions J

Java Performance measurement

Hi, I am doing some Java performance comparison between my classes, and wondering if there is some sort of Java Performance Framework to make writing performance measurement code easier? I.e, what I am doing now is trying to measure what effect does it have having a method as "synchronized" as in PseudoRandomUsingSynch.nextInt() compared to using an AtomicInteger as my "synchronizer". So I am trying to measure how long it takes to generate random integers using 3 threads accessing a synchronized method looping for say 10000 times. I am sure there is a much better way doing this. Keyboard mapping issue in Virtualbox on Mac OS

I run Windows 7 as a VM in VirtualBox on my MacBook Air (using OS X 10.7). If I do not shutdown the VM but save its machine state. The keyboard will behave strangely after resuming. It seems the Windows Logo key is always hold. When I type the key 'u', the Control Panel will be shown. I tested on a real Windows 7, the same dialog will be shown when I press Win-key and 'u'. When I type the key 'e', the Explorer will show up, some as press Win-key and 'e' on a real Windows 7. If I click 'Restart' from the Start menu of Windows 7, after restarting the VM, the keyboard works again. I think there are some conflicts with keyboard driver in VM. It is quite annoying, usually I usually close a VM by saving its machine state, not shut the OS down. Is there any way to solve this problem?

Efficient splitting of elements in a field

I have a field in a text file exported from a database. The field contains addresses but sometimes they are quite long and the database allows them to contain multiple lines. When exported, the newline character gets replaced with a dollar sign like this: first part of very long address$second part of very long address$third part of very long address Not every address has multiple lines and no address contains more than three lines. The length of each line is variable. I'm massaging the data for import into MS Access which is used for a mailmerge. I want to split the field on the $ sign if it's there but if the field only contains 1 line, I want to set my two extra output fields to a zero length string so that I don't wind up with blank lines in the address when it gets printed. I have an awk file that's working correctly on all the other data in the textfile but I need to get this last bit working. I tried the below code. Aside from the fact that I get a syntax error at the else, I'm not sure this is a good way to do what I want. This is being done with gawk on Windows. Windows apps keep switching to accented text

Somehow I keep hitting a shortcut key (or something similar) that enables the input of accented text. Whenever this accented text mode is enabled, pressing ' doesn't respond immediately; instead, the ' key is remembered, so if I press a vowel after that, I get the vowel with an acute accent mark, and if I press any other key, I immediately get an apostrophe followed by the other key. I don't want this to happen. It's very annoying. How do I disable this mode? I only remember seeing this in Firefox 3.6.3 and Pidgin 2.6.6, so maybe it's a GTK feature. It apparently happens on a per-application basis, and restarting the application fixes it. I checked Windows 7's "Region and Language" control panel and didn't see anything relevant (although I'm not intimately familiar with all of those settings, so I may have overlooked something).

Having a div and a h1 inside a section, how do i float the div in the top right corner without overlapping the text of the header ? Windows 7 freezes on connecting second time to same wifi network

I am using Lenovo - y470, which comes with windows 7 home premium. I can connect to my wifi network and there is no issue in that. But the problem comes if the network get disconnected and i again try to connect to same wifi network. As soon as i click on connect my system freezes, and i can not even press ctrl+ alt+ del . The only think i am allowed to do at that time is press and hold power button to shut down the system and restart it again. Please tell me how to resolve this issue. Please let me know if some more information is required. OS: Windows 7 Router: Netgear n-150

Why mutt terminates with segmentation error?

I pressed $, in order to sync mailbox, but mutt just quit... in fact mutt don't quit every time i press $, it only quits sometimes, so how to know the reason why mutt quit? is this a bug in mutt'? The error message is: Sorting mailbox... Segmentation fault Can i use strace with mutt if i want to know what happens? Or are there tools which are better to find out more about the problem? right now i replied to a mail, then i press $, then segmentation fault...

Google Maps, marker info window won't show up ?

Hi guys, I have written this code that loops through an array of lat/long coordinates and places a marker at each of the coordinate.
