• Ruby on Rails deployment, on "thin" server with lot of attachments

  A lot of PDFs are stored inside MySQL as a BLOB field for each PDF file. The average file size is 500K each. The Rails app will stream the :binary data as file downloads, where there is a user click on the download link. Assume there is a maximum of 5 users downloading 5 PDFs concurrently, what kind of deployment setup parameters I should be aware of? e.g. for the case of thin: thin start --servers 3 whether --servers 3 is good enough (or 5 or more is needed) for the above example? The 2nd question is whether 'thin' a capable solution? Thanks!

• Keeping the row in edit mode after saveRow in jqgrid

  I want to be able to keep the row in edit mode even after calling saveRow() function in jQgrid. This is because I want to be able to validate the data being saved and remove the edit mode only when the data has passed its validations. I am aware of the succesfunc, which gets called after successful posting of data. I get the response handle too, however, manually calling the editRow(row_id); function does not seem to work. Is there anyway, I can keep the row in edit mode after calling saveRow?

• Creating a constant Dictionary in C#

  What is the most efficient way to create a constant (never changes at runtime) mapping of strings to ints? I've tried using a const Dictionary, but that didn't work out. I could implement a immutable wrapper with appropriate semantics, but that still doesn't seem totally right. For those who have asked, I'm implementing IDataErrorInfo in a generated class and am looking for a way to make the columnName lookup into my array of descriptors. I wasn't aware (typo when testing! d'oh!) that switch accepts strings, so that's what I'm gonna use. Thanks!

• VisualStyleRenderer and themes (WinForms)

  I have my own TreeView control which is completely OwnerDraw'ed: myTreeView.DrawMode = TreeViewDrawMode.OwnerDrawAll; What I try to achieve is to draw the opened/closed glyph according to the current explorer theme. Especially on Vista and Win7 boxes I'd like to see the new glyphes (black triangles) instead of the plus/minus signs. I know, for a non-OwnerDraw'ed TreeView this can be achieved as follows which works perfectly: myTreeView.HandleCreated += delegate(object sender, EventArgs args) { MyNativeMethods.SetWindowTheme(myTreeView.Handle, "explorer", null); }; I thought a VisualStyleRenderer let me paint the glyphs theme-aware: VisualStyleRenderer r = new VisualStyleRenderer(VisualStyleElement.TreeView.Glyph.Opened); r.DrawBackground(e.Graphics, e.Bounds); The code above unfortunately draws the minus sign in all cases. It looks like the VisualStyleRenderer does not honour the theme setting. Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks!

• log4net dependency problem

  I have an issue with log4net which has been bugging me for a while and I've resolved to sort it. I have a class library which references log4net. If I reference this class library in another project I must then reference log4net in this project otherwise I get a build error Unknown build error, 'Cannot resolve dependency to assembly 'log4net, Version=1.2.10.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=1b44e1d426115821' because it has not been preloaded. When using the ReflectionOnly APIs, dependent assemblies must be pre-loaded or loaded on demand through the ReflectionOnlyAssemblyResolve event.' I'm aware that the error message is probably telling me the solution, unfortunately I don't speak gibberish... Cheers guys Alex..

• Variable number of arguments in an Axis2 POJO

  I have a web service that I built with Axis2/Java. The web service will take in a list of objects and will process them. I'll use the following operation as an example. public class AddToDatabaseService{ public void addToDatabase(String name1, String name2, String name3, ....) { //add names to database } } I want the caller of my web service to use a URI like: http://localhost:8080/axis2/services/addToDatabase?name1=Joe&name2=Bob&name3=Kelly&name4=... I'm aware this is not compilable code and the idea is still there. Is this even possible with SOAP-based web services? I know this is possible to do with RESTful services because you can just take the HttpServletRequest request object and do Enumeration enumeration = request.getParameterNames() and iterate through them. I'm looking for the equivalent of that in web services POJO's with Axis2. A link or an sample program would be great! Thanks.

• ASP.NET MVC model binding foreign key relationship

  Is it possible to bind a foreign key relationship on my model to a form input? Say I have a one-to-many relationship between Car and Manufacturer. I want to have a form for updating Car that includes a select input for setting Manufacturer. I was hoping to be able to do this using the built-in model binding, but I'm starting to think I'll have to do it myself. My action method signature looks like this: public JsonResult Save(int id, [Bind(Include="Name, Description, Manufacturer")]Car car) The form posts the values Name, Description and Manufacturer, where Manufacturer is a primary key of type int. Name and Description get set properly, but not Manufacturer, which makes sense since the model binder has no idea what the PK field is. Does that mean I would have to write a custom IModelBinder that it aware of this? I'm not sure how that would work since my data access repositories are loaded through an IoC container on each Controller constructor.

• MySQL and GROUP_CONCAT() maximum length

  Hello everyone, I'm using GROUP_CONCAT() in a MySQL query to convert multiple rows into a single string. However, the maximum length of the result of this function is 1024 characters. I'm very well aware that I can change the param group_concat_max_len to increase this limit: SET SESSION group_concat_max_len = 1000000; However, on the server I'm using, I can't change any param. Not by using the preceding query and not by editing any configuration file. So my question is: Is there any other way to get the output of a multiple row query into a single string? • Modularizing web applications

  Hey all, I was wondering how big companies tend to modularize components on their page. Facebook is a good example: There's a team working on Search that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc.. There's a team working on the news feed that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc... ... And the list goes on They cannot all be aware of what everyone is naming their div tags and whatnot, so what's the controller(?) doing to hook all these components in on the final page?? Note: This doesn't just apply to facebook - any company that has separate teams working on separate components has some logic that helps them out. EDIT: Thanks all for the responses, unfortunately I still haven't really found what I'm looking for - when you check out the source code (granted its minified), the divs have UIDs, my guess is that there is a compilation process that runs through and makes each of the components unique, renaming divs and css rules.. any ideas?   I'm trying to run a custom WinHTTP based web-server on Windows Server 2008 machine. I pass "http://*:22222/" to HttpAddUrl When I start my executable as Administrator or LocalSystem everything works fine. However if I try to run it as NetworkService to minimize security risks (since there are no legitimate reasons for the app to use admin rights) function fails with "Access Denied" error code. I wasn't aware of NetworkService having any restrictions on which ports and interfaces it can listen on. Is there a way to configure permissions in such a way so that I actually can run the app under NetworkService account and connect to it from other internet hosts?

I have never had a contract position before, so I don't know what the implications of this are, and how it differs from a salaried position with benefits. =/ What are some things that I should be aware of before accepting the contract position? • SSIS Send Mail task limited to 255 characters in address?

  Is this a bug, or some hidden limit I can't find any documentation about? When creating a Send Mail Task in SSIS 2008, the TO, CC and BCC fields seem to have a hidden limit of 255 characters. I'm aware this is the standard limit for individual email addresses, but all three are commonly used for multiple addresses and the comment for the To field even says "separate the recipients with semicolons". But nevertheless, it truncates the address to a maximum of 255 characters. Bug, non-obvious standard, or something I'm missing? Any way around this? We were trying to build a CC list dynamically, but this has caused a rethink.

• Differences & Similarities Between Programming Paradigms

  Hi Guys I've been working as a developer for the past 4 years, with the 4 years previous to that studying software development in college. In my 4 years in the industry I've done some work in VB6 (which was a joke), but most of it has been in C#/ASP.NET. During this time, I've moved from an "object-aware" procedural paradigm to an object-oriented paradigm. Lately I've been curious about other programming paradigms out there, so I thought I'd ask other developers their opinions on the similarities & differences between these paradigms, specifically to OOP? In OOP, I find that there's a strong focus on the relationships and logical interactions between concepts. What are the mind frames you have to be in for the other paradigms? Thanks Dave

• MonoTouch 3.0.6 supports iPhone OS 4 what about legal issues

  Now MonoTouch supports iPhone OS 4 with current 3.0.6 version but Apple banned all programming languages beside C/C++/Objective-C. So it is confusing why Novell supports iPhone OS 4 if it is banned? Is there any exception for MonoTouch we don't know yet? I am aware of previous stackoverflow question Is MonoTouch now banned on the iPhone? But MonoTouch iPhone OS 4 support is new. I asked to MonoTouch support about this issue but they haven't answered yet (more than a day). I am about to start iPhone development and MonoTouch seems promising however I wonder future of the MonoTouch. An answer from Novell or Apple will be appreciated. If you know something please share.   I would like to know if this is a good idea that conforms to best practices that does not lead to obscenely confusing code or major performance hit(s): Make my own Collision detection class that extends Rectangle class. Then when instantiating that object doing something such as Collision col = new Rectangle(); <- Should I do that or is that something that should be avoided? I am aware that I 'can' but should I? I want to extend Rectangle class because of the contains() and intersects() methods; should I be doing that or should I be doing something else for 2D collision detection in Java?

  Hello all, I am aware that _beginthreadex is part of the MSCVRT functions and therefore not accessible via Cygwin/MinGW uintptr_t _beginthreadex( void *security, unsigned stack_size, unsigned ( __stdcall *start_address )( void * ), void *arglist, unsigned initflag, unsigned *thrdaddr ); However, _beginthreadex does call upon CreateThread(). HANDLE CreateThread( LPSECURITY_ATTRIBUTES secAttr, SIZE_T stackSize, LPTHREAD_START_ROUTINE threadFunc, LPVOID param, DWORD flags, LPDWORD threadID ); However, does anyone have a wrapper or a URL to a library that is compatible with Cygwin/WinGW. Or can offer some advice? As this is the last little piece of moving from VSutdio Project over to makefiles for Windows/Darwin/Linux. Thanks.

• How to follow user location with MapKit

  I'm using MapKit to display the user's location relative to pins around them. I'd like to be able to mimic the functionality that Maps provides via the crosshair button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. I'm already aware that MapKit provides a CLLocation object with the user's location via MKUserLocation, I just wanted to seek advice on how I should keep focus on that location. My initial inclination was to use an NSTimer to center the map on that coordinate every 500ms or so. Is there a better way to do this? Is there something built in to MapKit that I'm missing that will accomplish this? Thanks so much, Brendan

• Differences in IE8 behavior between XP, Vista, Win7?

  Is there any significant difference in behavior (HTML, CSS, Javascript, ...) with Internet Explorer 8 on different operating systems? In other words, will a web page work the same way across IE8+XP, IE8+Vista and IE8+Win7, or are there some significant differences? (I'm aware that installed plugins and fonts will have an impact, but that's a bit outside my scope at the moment; assuming compatibility mode X-UA-Compatible: IE=8 or edge) Although The IEBlog contains very useful information, I haven't found this data there - so I'm assuming that there should not be any difference. However, search has turned up this (vague) question: "IE8 on XP: looks great! IE8 on Vista: looks terrible". Will have to check IE8+{XP,V,7} in VM in the meantime.

• "not well-formed" warning when loading client-side JSON in Firefox via jQuery.ajax

  I am using jQuery's ajax method to acquire a static JSON file. The data is loaded from the local file system, hence there is no server, so I can't change the mime type. This works fin in Safari, but Firefox (3.6.3) reports the file to be "not well-formed". I am aware of, and have reviewed, a similar post here on Stack Overflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/677902/not-well-formed-error-in-firefox-when-loading-json-file-with-xmlhttprequest I believe my JSON is well-formed: { "_": ["appl", "goog", "yhoo", "vz", "t"] } My ajax call is straightforward: $.ajax({ url: 'data/tickers.json', dataType: 'json', async: true, data: null, success: function(data, textStatus, request) { callback(data); } }); If I wrap the JSON with a document tag: <document>JSON data</document> as was mentioned in the above referenced posted question, the ajax call fails with a parserror. So: is there a way to avoid the Firefox warning when reading in client-side JSON files?

  Hello, I want to draw a route between 2 locations on the map.. something as a tour guide.When the tourist clicks another location i want to be able to draw the route as well as inform the distance from current location. I am aware of sites on the internet which tell how to draw polylines on map. But,one such example had a preloaded .csv file with various coordinates. Is there an alternate way to get the coordinates..as the location is selected dynamically.If no, how do i get the information for intermediate coordinates?   I am an experienced asp.net web forms developer using c# but i have never used asp.net MVC. As I am just starting out with mvc i would like to start with mvc 2. I am looking for a good intro/tutorial to help me understand the basics. I am aware of the Nerd Dinner but that is based around MVC 1. What would you guys recomend for me to get started. Should i work through the nerd dinner tutorial then once i have a good understanding of mvc then research the new features of mvc 2 or is there a similar getting started tutorial for mvc 2. Sugestions of good books to read are also welcome. In fact any advice on getting started on mvc 2 would be good.

• BlackBerry Horizontal Scrolling in TreeField or ListField

  I am working on an application that requires text larger than the viewable screen size in both a TreeField and a ListField. As you know, the TreeField and ListField callbacks support only graphics.drawText() methods, so I cannot add an instance of a Field per row. Does anyone have a method of Scrolling horizontally past the viewable text size? Is there maybe a scrollable panel that would work? I know of the NullField(Field.Focusable) trick but this won't work on the list field. Lastly, I am aware that the type of screen makes a different as FullScreen and MainScreen use VerticalFieldMangers. So am using a PopupScreen at the moment for my testing. • How to get a tool window title bar height in WPF ?

  WPF includes the title bar height in the total window height instead of using only the client content area height. Is there a way to disable this behaviour? If not, how can I get the height of a tool window title bar? I'm aware of the SystemParameters.CaptionHeight property and the SystemParameters.WindowCaptionHeight property but they both return the height of a regular window title bar. This is not the correct value for a tool window because the title bar is smaller for this type of window. I need something like SystemParameters.ToolWindowCaptionHeight Thanks.

• Must I call super when I implement -scrollViewDidScroll: of UIScrollViewDelegate in an UITableView?

  I made a custom UITableView subclass and implemented this: - (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView { // scrolled... } Now, what I think is that UITableView may also love to get this message for some obvious reasons. However, when I don't forward that to super, for some reason, everything still works fine. Must I forward that guy to super? I mean...it's a delegate method implementation, but as far as I'm aware of, this would still override anything implemented in UITableView, or not? Edit: I see...the delegate could be anyone. Never mind about this. BUT: What I have such a thing in a superclass, and make a subclass. How would I even know that the superclass does implement that method and I must forward it to super?

• Multiple skins in ASP.NET MVC using StringTemplate

  I am considering the StringTemplate view engine for my ASP.NET MVC application. This application will be built with one skin, but I then expect many more, often very similar skins to be developed for it. This is primiarly the reason for my choice of StringTemplate as the view engine, as there will be zero logic in the views. In my head, I envisaged having each skin in a directory under the 'Views' directory in the folder structure, then maintaining a data structure which maps hostnames to skin directories. An obvious disadvantage of this approach is that I will have to explicitly specify my view files - an alternative might be to hack the implementation of the View() method to change the /views/controller/action standard path and insert an extra layer. Is anyone aware of any examples of implementations along these lines using ASP.NET MVC and StringTemplate at present? Can anyone forsee any potential problems with my approach? Thanks in advance.
