  • IE6 Support - When to drop it? [closed]

    - by Scott Brown
Possible Duplicate: Should I bother supporting IE6? I'm thinking about IE6 support and when to give up on it. Do you have a percentage of total visitors figure in mind for when to drop support? Would you let a trend develop past this figure or are you just going take the first opportunity? I've seen a 44% drop in IE6 visitors in the past 12 months from 23%(ish) of visitors down to 13%(ish). Even if it was 5% it still seems too early to drop support to me (it's still 1 in every 20 users). What are people's thoughts on this?

  • How to mount a hidden NTFS WinRE which are on an external HDD

    - by annabinna
A friend have given me her external hard drive which contains a backup of his Windows data. The disk has two NTFS partitions, once of them tagged as WinRe. When I do fdisk -lu I get Disk /dev/sdc: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders, total 234441648 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x59725972 Dispositiu Arrenc. Can someone help me?

  • Starting to make 2D games in C++

    - by Ashley
I'm fairly experienced with C and C#, but I've only ever created console/windows applications. I'm also experienced with AS3 and I've made some flash games. I want to make proper 2D games in C++, but I have no idea where to begin with graphics. There are entire books devoted to game development in C++ that only work with console applications and I'm finding the lack of resources and tutorials for proper 2D games frustrating... I'm also not particularly interested in using existing engines because I want total control of what I create. I've heard of the Allegro library; is it something important/popular that I should look into? How will I use DirectX? Any resources or links to tutorials or information is greatly appreciated.

  • JNI 'problmatic frame' causes JVM to crash

    - by HJED
Hi I'm using JNI to access the exiv2 library (written in C++) in Java and I'm getting a weird runtime error in the JNI code. I've tried using various -Xms and -Xmx options, but that seems to have no affect. I've also tried running this code on JDK1.7.0 with the same result. # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: # # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007ff31807757f, pid=4041, tid=140682078746368 # # JRE version: 6.0_20-b20 # Java VM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (19.0-b09 mixed mode linux-amd64 ) # Derivative: IcedTea6 1.9.2 # Distribution: Ubuntu 10.10, package 6b20-1.9.2-0ubuntu2 # Problematic frame: # V [libjvm.so+0x42757f] # # If you would like to submit a bug report, please include # instructions how to reproduce the bug and visit: # https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-6/ # --------------- T H R E A D --------------- Current thread (0x000000000190d000): JavaThread "main" [_thread_in_Java, id=4043, stack(0x00007ff319447000,0x00007ff319548000)] siginfo:si_signo=SIGSEGV: si_errno=0, si_code=1 (SEGV_MAPERR), si_addr=0x0000000000000024 Registers: ... • Where did my free space go?

    - by Ari B. Friedman
    I have a storage drive (2TB) and an OS drive (90GB SSD). I've run out of space on the OS drive: /$ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 72G 72G 0 100% / udev 5.9G 12K 5.9G 1% /dev tmpfs 2.4G 1.2M 2.4G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 5.9G 428K 5.9G 1% /run/shm /dev/sda1 1.9T 639G 1.2T 37% /media/StorageDrive So be it. But when I attempt to figure out where the space has gone, I cannot find it anything remotely approaching the capacity of the drive: /$ sudo du -h -d 1 du: cannot access `./media/StorageDrive/home/ari/.gvfs': Permission denied 675G ./media 2.3G ./var 0 ./proc 7.0M ./tmp 27M ./boot 4.0K ./lib64 12K ./dev 44M ./home 16K ./lost+found 8.0M ./sbin 223M ./lib 4.0K ./selinux 1.4M ./run 140K ./root 8.8M ./bin 4.0K ./mnt 38M ./etc 8.0K ./srv 4.8G ./usr 65M ./opt 0 ./sys 682G . Note the difference between the total (682G) and the mounted drives in /media (675G) is only about 9G. How are 72G being used? Where is this dark matter hiding?

  • How do I go about hosting facebook apps that are picking speed?

    - by Karthik
My situation is this. I coded in php and built a facebook app. After 3 days it has 13,000 users. I have my own server at hostmonster. It is a regular plan costing me about $70 per year. It has unlimited bandwidth. I did not anticipate hosting apps or that it could pick up so many users. Already 1 Gb of data was transferred in the last few days. I am planning to build a few more apps(around 10 - 20) and reach atleast a million users in total. Should I continue hosting on the same server or move to a VPS? I am a student and I don't have too much of a disposable income. So I want to move only if it is necessary. Right now it shows 1 Gb/infinity in data transfer. Any help/suggestions highly appreciated.

  • Which of the following relational database management systems would a company adopt (for migration), if any, MS Access, MS SQL Server or MySQL?

    - by Hassan Hagi
Dear programmers, as part of my final year university project, I am conducting research into relational database management systems such as Microsoft Office Access 2007, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and MySQL 5.1. The description does not need to be detailed however; I am trying to find empirical evidence and professional opinion/fact to determine which of the three databases are best suited for the required size of company (stated or unstated). OS: Microsoft windows (XP or newer) Please consider the following, but full details are not necessary: Memory management Migration Design constraints Integrity (data and others) Triggers User constraints Ease of use Performance Crash Recovery (not the operating system) Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Also any info on Open source (to do with the three RDBMS) Thank you for your time and help. • Getting work done in a small office

    - by three-cups
I work in an office area of ~450sqft. There are a total of 7 people working in the office. I've been finding it hard to concentrate on my work (writing code) because of the distractions going on around me. The distractions are both work-related and non-work-related conversations. I'm trying to figure out what to do in this situation. I want to be part of the team, and I want to get my work done to the best of my ability. I can easily think of two options that I don't like: Stay where I am, not be able to concentrate and get less work done Move somewhere else. (This is tough because I code on a desktop, so I'm not very mobile.) But what are other options? I'm going to talk this through with my team in the next couple days. Any advice or solutions would be great.

  • Jr developer report bug to potential future boss [on hold]

    - by Cryptoforce
I applied for a Web developer job in Quebec City, and they called me back for a phone interview. Everything went well, it last for over a hours, and at the end they ask me to send code simple and a portfolio, but in my research about the company and their products I found a PHP error(bug) in their app. Should I tell them or I would that make me look like a total jerk and blow my chance for a interview? I know it might sound stupid. As a junior developer I did 2 interviews they didn't go so well. I am very interested in this position part of my question is like a big lack of confidence so to make it short should I tell them about where is the error and how to fix it? Thanks

  • Is it possible to know impressions of other websites?

    - by Saeed Neamati
Google Webmasters's dashboard gives you a big number which is called impressions, and by definition that I've seen in Google Analytics, it means the total number of times your site has been become eligible for SERPs. I just don't have an idea how to invest on this number, and how much its increase or decrease mean to me, because I can't compare it with other websites. I mean, if the impressions of say site a.com is 150,000, and mine is 50,000, then maybe I can confer that I need to triple my efforts to reach to a.com. But by seeing 50,000 alone I have no clue at all of how to interpret it. Is there any service or other way to know about the impressions Google gives to other sites?

  • tail stops displaying in case of a log rotation

    - by Rudy Vissers
I have to tail the log of a server (servicemix) and the log rotation is enabled. As soon as the rotation happens, tail stops displaying. I did some investigations and it is a bug in Debian : Debian Bug Report. The bug has been around for a long time ago. Does anyone knows if this bug in Ubuntu is to be fixed? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. I don't have to mention that this bug is total hell! Every time I have the problem, I have to interrupt the command tail and re-execute the command!

  • Can I remove "Free space" text from the Nautilus status bar?

    - by DisgruntledGoat
I want to remove the part in Nautilus that shows free disk space. In theory it may useful but it's so badly designed, every time I select some files my eye gets drawn to "15 GB" instead of the actual size of the files. And with no files selected, it says something like "24 items, Free space 15GB" which at a quick glance looks like the total size of the files. I've looked through the preferences and don't see anything. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with Nautilus 2.32.0.

  • New to world of Ubuntu

    - by Michael Raymond Cheney
I've been running Ubuntu 13.04 since June 2013, and upgrading to 13.10 as we speak.(Note I own total 3 laptops.) My goal is to have one complete Linux machine and one dual boot, and third well (he is a newer Lenovo with Windows 8.1 and is touch screen.) but I want to learn Ubuntu life and further myself with using it for everyday use, but I'm not very fluid in Linux usage and hoping to find people who have a love for teaching others how to be one with the BEST OS IN THE WORLD! Hope I've got few people wanting to teach or give good instruction for success. ~Mike Cheney~

  • Ubuntu missing from the Grub menu

    - by varevarao
Recently I've had some audio issues with Ubuntu (using precise), and in the process of trying to resolve that I ran a dist-upgrade. Everything went just fine, and the sound seemed good, until I rebooted my machine for the first time since the dist-upgrade. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootPartition) =================== Default settings Recommended-Repair This setting would reinstall the grub2 of sda6 into the MBR of sda, using the following options: kernel-purge Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s fix-windows-boot =================== Settings chosen by the user Boot-Info This setting will not act on the MBR. • Unity does not display properly [closed]

    - by Ben Isaacs
Ubuntu Unity on the Ubuntu netbook edition installs without a problem but when I log in though, where the panels are, there is just blank area with a shadow effect style thing on it. I can open apps but the Window buttons and the global menu are not visable. Does this mean that I cannot use Unity. I'm running it through Wubi on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. My total ammount of graphics memory is 831MB My dedicated memory is 128MB. The odd thing is is that Windows Aero displays without a problem so why is there a problem with Unity Hope this helps Ben

  • Would you make your website's source code public?

    - by Karpie
Back story: My best friend is a self-taught coder for a community art site, written in PHP. Some time ago he mentioned he wanted to make the source code of the site public, to which my response was total horror - surely it was going to be full of security holes waiting to be found, and it was going to lead to hacking and errors on a huge scale. He never ended up doing it. Current story: I'm starting development of a community website built in Rails, and for ease of use I was going to use Github for version control. Then I realized it was pretty much exactly the same thing as my friend making his source code public - which made me stop and think. Would you make your website's completely-custom source code public? Or is this a case of open source gone too far? (note: I don't think this applies to people who run things like Wordpress. Or does it?)

  • SPARC T4-4 Delivers World Record Performance on Oracle OLAP Perf Version 2 Benchmark

    - by Brian
Oracle's SPARC T4-4 server delivered world record performance with subsecond response time on the Oracle OLAP Perf Version 2 benchmark using Oracle Database 11g Release 2 running on Oracle Solaris 11. The SPARC T4-4 server achieved throughput of 430,000 cube-queries/hour with an average response time of 0.85 seconds and the median response time of 0.43 seconds. This was achieved by using only 60% of the available CPU resources leaving plenty of headroom for future growth. The SPARC T4-4 server operated on an Oracle OLAP cube with a 4 billion row fact table of sales data containing 4 dimensions. This represents as many as 90 quintillion aggregate rows (90 followed by 18 zeros). Performance Landscape Oracle OLAP Perf Version 2 Benchmark 4 Billion Fact Table Rows System Queries/hour Users* Response Time (sec) Average Median SPARC T4-4 430,000 7,300 0.85 0.43 * Users - the supported number of users with a given think time of 60 seconds Configuration Summary and Results Hardware Configuration: SPARC T4-4 server with 4 x SPARC T4 processors, 3.0 GHz 1 TB memory Data Storage 1 x Sun Fire X4275 (using COMSTAR) 2 x Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array (each with 80 FMODs) Redo Storage 1 x Sun Fire X4275 (using COMSTAR with 8 HDD) Software Configuration: Oracle Solaris 11 11/11 Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.3) with Oracle OLAP option Benchmark Description The Oracle OLAP Perf Version 2 benchmark is a workload designed to demonstrate and stress the Oracle OLAP product's core features of fast query, fast update, and rich calculations on a multi-dimensional model to support enhanced Data Warehousing. The bulk of the benchmark entails running a number of concurrent users, each issuing typical multidimensional queries against an Oracle OLAP cube consisting of a number of years of sales data with fully pre-computed aggregations. The cube has four dimensions: time, product, customer, and channel. Each query user issues approximately 150 different queries. One query chain may ask for total sales in a particular region (e.g South America) for a particular time period (e.g. Q4 of 2010) followed by additional queries which drill down into sales for individual countries (e.g. Chile, Peru, etc.) with further queries drilling down into individual stores, etc. Another query chain may ask for yearly comparisons of total sales for some product category (e.g. major household appliances) and then issue further queries drilling down into particular products (e.g. refrigerators, stoves. etc.), particular regions, particular customers, etc. Results from version 2 of the benchmark are not comparable with version 1. The primary difference is the type of queries along with the query mix. Key Points and Best Practices Since typical BI users are often likely to issue similar queries, with different constants in the where clauses, setting the init.ora prameter "cursor_sharing" to "force" will provide for additional query throughput and a larger number of potential users. Except for this setting, together with making full use of available memory, out of the box performance for the OLAP Perf workload should provide results similar to what is reported here. For a given number of query users with zero think time, the main measured metrics are the average query response time, the median query response time, and the query throughput. A derived metric is the maximum number of users the system can support achieving the measured response time assuming some non-zero think time. The calculation of the maximum number of users follows from the well-known response-time law N = (rt + tt) * tp where rt is the average response time, tt is the think time and tp is the measured throughput. Setting tt to 60 seconds, rt to 0.85 seconds and tp to 119.44 queries/sec (430,000 queries/hour), the above formula shows that the T4-4 server will support 7,300 concurrent users with a think time of 60 seconds and an average response time of 0.85 seconds.
