• Website hosted at home pingable from outside, but not browseable from outside [closed]

  I have a simple setup. Server at home has local I.P. 192.168.1.3 IIS is running on the server and the website is up. Windows firewall on the server has an exception rule for port 80 TCP Router has static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX Router is forwarding TCP port 80 to 192.168.1.3 My domain registrar is my DNS host and is pointing to the static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX of the router Here's what I can and can't do. I can browse the website from within my home network either by I.P. or domain name. I can ping the domain and the I.P. from outside the network (from a computer at work). I can't browse the website either by domain name or by I.P. Wierd. Why I can't browse my website?

• CPanel - Wild card SSL - How to point *.domain.com to one root and sub.domain.com to another root

  I have a wildcard (*.domain.com) SSL certificate installed on my CPanel server. I have domain.com configured to point to /domain.com as its document root and use this wildcard SSL certificate. I also have sub.domain.com configured to point to /sub.domain.com as its document root. Btw, I have not explicitly configured configured sub.domain.com to use the wildcard SSL certificate. When I go to "http://sub.domain.com" it goes to the correct document root, however my problem is that when I go to "https://sub.domain.com" it goes to the incorrect root, it goes to the root configured for the wildcard SSL. I've been trying to find information on how to go about configuring sub.domain.com to use the SSL certificate and go to the correct document root, however, so far I haven't found anything concrete. Do I use the same steps that I used for configuring the certificate for domain.com, but use the same certificate again and specify dev.domain.com as the domain that this certificate is for (instead of *.domain.com)? Or is there something else I should be doing? This is a production server, so I don't want to play around too much. I'm hoping to find the correct information before proceeding.

• Resolving a cname using different DNS

  I have a domain name (e.g. abc.com) registered in GoDaddy and I have a few subdomains (mail, blog) correctly setup to a different hosts. Now I want to park my domain with a parking host (seohosting.com) which asked me to change my nameserver to their DNS. What I want is to only redirect dns queries for (www or @) cname to seohosting.com while still being able to use my other cname for my own purpose. Is there a way to do this? I dont have the host IP address for parking host.

• Value of the HTML5 lang attribute

  I'm working on a website which will offer localized content following the language+region approach as described on this W3.org page (e.g. fr-CA for Canadian French content, and fr-FR for "French French" content). As we consider content for each language+region to be unique, it is crucial to us that search engines properly identify and serve the content accordingly. By looking up on the Internet (e.g. this question), it appears that most people recommend the use of an ISO639 language code in the HTML lang attribute to describe the content language. Following this recommendation, we would en up using <html lang="fr"> which wouldn't enable the differentiation between the aforementioned language+region combinations. When reviewing the HTML4 specification, it seems that using language+region as a language code would be perfectly OK, as the en-US example is given as one possible value. However I couldn't find any confirmation of this in the HTML5 specification which doesn't seem to provide any example as to the possible allowed values. From there I tried to get a de facto answer by looking at what the web giants are doing. • How can I get my dynamic site search results content indexed by Google?

  I have a site that is simply a search box to search a cloud-hosted database of .tiff images, and then all of my content can only be accessed by entering a search term. So for example, you're on the home page www.example.com and you type in "search" to the box and hit submit. Then it takes you to www.example.com/?q=search, which is a page of all my .tiff images with "search" in the description. How can I get a page like www.example.com/?q=search indexed, WITHOUT making a humungous list of search terms that people might type in?? I know about mod_rewrite, but it seems like for that you need to know ahead of time which URLs you'll need to convert, which I don't. All of these pages will be dynamically user-generated by typing into the search field. Please help!

• How to suppress PHPSESSID in URL for Googlebot?

  I use cookie based sessions, and they work for normal interaction with our site. However, when Googlebot comes crawling out PHP framework, Yii, needs to append ?PHPSESSID to each URL, which doesn't look that good in SERP. Any ways to suppress this behavior? PS. I tried to utilize ini_set('session.use_only_cookies', '1');, but it does not work. PPS. • Do backlinks to blocked content add value?

  We've been debating the following SEO question at our office: If you block bot access to a page either via robots.txt or on-page noindex metadata, does that negate the value of any backlinks to that page? We have a client who wants to block some event booking form pages from being indexed as each booking form page has a unique URL parameter and the pages are "clogging up" the Google index; however lots of websites link to those booking form pages and we wouldn't want to lose the value of those links. Any opinions welcomed.

  We're working on a site and have come to a choice between one long (not too excessive) main page and several subpages. The subpages would have custom metas/titles/h2 tags and the content that corresponds to them. The main page would have all the content and many more inbound links (pagerank) and with longer content encompassing the content we'd put on the shorter pages. Which would be better for seo and traffic in general? Both schemes are very usable to the user although we are a little concerned with duplicate content (the page's header/footer and other elements remain the same)

• What are the options for hosting a small Plone site? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I’ve developed a portfolio website for myself using Plone 4, and I’m looking for someplace to host it. Most Plone hosting services seem to focus on large, corporate deployments, but I need something that I can afford on a very limited budget and fits a small, single-admin website. My understanding is that my basic options are thus: I can go with a hosting service that specifically provides Plone. I know of WebFaction, but what others exist? Also, I’d have two stipulations for a Plone hosting service: (a) It needs to use Plone 4, for which I’ve developed my site, and (b) it needs to allow me SSH access to a home directory (including the Plone configuration), so that I may use my custom development eggs and such. I could use a VPS hosting service. What are my options here? Again, I need something cheap and scaled to my level. I could use Amazon EC2 or a similar service (please tell me of any) and pay by the tiniest unit of data. I’m a little scared of this because I have no idea how to do a cost-benefit analysis between this and a regular VPS host. The advantage of this approach would be that I only pay for what I use, making it very scalable, but I don’t know how the overall cost would compare to any VPS host under similar circumstances. What factors enter into the cost of Amazon EC2? What can I expect to pay under either option for regular traffic for a new website? Which one is more desirable for when a rush of visitors drive up my bandwidth bill? One last note: I know Plone isn’t common for websites for individuals, but please don’t try to talk me out of it here; that’s a completely different subject. For now, assume I’m sticking with Plone for good. Also, I have seen the Plone hosting services list on Plone.org—it’s twenty pages long, and the first page was nothing but professional Plone consulting services that sometimes offer hosting for business clients.   This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers I just paid ($6 /month) for shared Windows hosting through 1&1 hosting. I was having trouble connecting to my database from home, so I sent an email to support. I received the following response: As we checked your concern here in our end, please be advised that due to limitation of Shared Hosting services, there is no option to connect the database to your SQL Management Studio or through Visual Studio. It is only possible for Dedicated Server package. You may only access the database using MyLittleAdmin at the Control Panel. A dedicated server is like $200 per month! What is the point of having database access only through a web console? I feel I am missing something here, or maybe the support agent is. Is there a way to access my MS SQL database on their servers through Visual Studio or SQL Management Studio from my machine? If not, is there a web host who allows this for less than $200 a month? EDIT: Marked as duplicate... I'm not asking for a list of web hosts, I'm asking how to remotely connect to my MSSQL database through 1&1's services.

• Google indexing wrong domain that does not work

  Can anyone tell me why Google indexes a site http://0.3c.7aae.static.theplanet.com instead of the actual domain name (my domain was registered with webmaster tools). The aforementioned link was linking to my site, but has now become a broken link. Initially I tried 301 directs, but nothing worked. The hosting company cannot explain why. • What is the most time-effective way to monitor & manage threats from bots and/or humans?

  I'm usually overwhelmed by the amount of tools that hosting companies provide to track & quantify traffic data and statistics. I'm equally overwhelmed by the countless flavors of malicious 'attacks' that target any and every web site known to man. The security methods used to protect both the back and front end of a website are documented well and are straight-forward in terms of ease of implementation and application, but the army of autonomous bots knows no boundaries and will always find a niche of a website to infest. So what can be done to handle the inevitable swarm of bots that pound your domain with brute force? Whenever I look at error logs for my domains, there are always thousands of entries that look like bots trying to sneak sql code into the database by tricking the variables in the url into giving them schema information or private data within the database. My barbaric and time-consuming plan of defense is just to monitor visitor statistics for those obvious patterns of abuse and either ban the ips or range of ips accordingly. Aside from that, I don't know much else I could do to prevent all of the ping pong going on all day. Are there any good tools that automatically monitor this background activity (specifically activity that throws errors on the web & db server) and proactively deal with these source(s) of mayhem?

• From .psd to working HTML and CSS - help me suck less

  I am not much of a designer. My strength lies in coding. That said, I'm often forced into the role of "The Man," responsible for all aspects of site creation. So, that said I'm wondering if the pros can give me tips/solutions/links to tutorials to my main questions. Resolution. What should I aim for? What are the lower and upper edges I should be aware of? I know that systems like 960 Grid were popular recently. Is that the number I should still aim for? Slicing up a .psd - are there any tricks I should know? I've always found it difficult to get my slices pixel perfect. I'm also really slow at it. I must be looking at it wrong, or missing something fundamental. The same goes for text. Layouts are always filled with the classic "Lorem...", but I can never seem to get real content to fit quite as well on the screen. The advanced (to me, anyway) looking things, like a part of a logo/image overlaying what looks like a content area. How does one do that? How do layouts change/are informed by the decision to go fixed or liquid? Again, any tips/tricks/suggestions/tutorials you can share would be greatly appreciated.

  I have a couple of questions about Ajax crawling of site, which is kind of search engine itself. The base article explains the mechanism of making AJAX application crawlable. All this stuff with HTML-snapshots is clear and easy to implement, but I cant understand where will Google bot will get "the crawler finds a pretty AJAX URL"( ie www.example.com/ajax.html#key=value) to work with. First thing, that came on mind - is breadcrumb. In sitemap we can specify pages with breadcrumb on it. so bot will go to these pages and get HTML-snapshots from here. But I'm sure, there are exists other ways to give bot this "pretty AJAX URL". In our case, we have simple search site, where user enters keyword, presses "Find", js execute Ajax request, receives JSON reponce and fill page with results(without any refresh of course). In this case - how to make google bot crawle all the presults in addition to sitemap? Is there some example of solution, described in article above?

  Say that I have a domain name called example.com and two server located at 2 different IP addresses: 1.2.3.4 and 6.7.8.9. How could I assign example.com to 1.2.3.4 and the subdomain foo.example.com to 6.7.8.9? [EDIT] I did try to put a A record linking from @ to the first IP address and from foo.example.com to the second IP address, as illustrated below: And I did configure a vhosts called foo.example.com on my server at IP address 2. The @ record works. But after 3 hours waiting for the result (DNS delay), nothing happened with foo.example.com, which link to nothing. Why?
