• Modelling problem - Networked devices with commands

  I encountered a head scratching modelling problem today: We are modelling a physical control system composed of Devices and NetworkDevices. Any example of a Device is a TV. An example of a NetworkDevice is an IR transceiver with Ethernet connection. As you can see, to be able to control the TV over the internet we must connect the Device to the NetworkDevice. There is a one to many relationship between Device and NetworkDevice i.e. TV only has one NetworkDevice (the IR transceiver), but the IR transceiver may control many Devices (e.g. many TVs). So far no problem. The complicated bit is that every Device has a collection of Commands. The type of the Command (e.g IrCommand, SerialCommand - N.B. not currently modelled) depends on the type of NetworkDevice that the Device is connected to. In the current legacy system the Device has a collection of generic Commands (no typing) where fields are "interpreted" depending on the NetworkDevice type. How do I go about modelling this in OOP such that: You can only ever add a Command of the appropriate type, given the NetworkDevice the Device is attached to? If I change the NetworkDevice the Commands collection changes to the appropriate type Make it so the API is simple/elegant/intuitive to use

• ASP.NET MVC Creating a impersonated user.

  Hi, I have a MVC app where I have a User class and the user can also impersonate another user(Admin users only). So I have this code below that authenticates the request and instantiates my version of a User class. It then tries to get the impersonated user from the Session object but Session is not available in this method in the global.asax. Hope this makes sense. • Missing Intellisense While Describing Custom Control Properties Declaratively

  So, I've been working on this project for a few days now, and have been unable to resolve the issue of getting intellisense support for my custom-defined inner properties for a user control (ascx, mind you). I have seen the solution to this (using server controls, .cs mind you) many times. Spelled out in this article very well. Everything works for me while using ascx controls except intellisense.   I have huge problem: I have lots of .dbf files(~50000) and I need to import them into Oracle database. Everything's fine. BUT: There is about 1000 files, that I can't open. They raise exception "not a table". So I google, and install Borland Database Engine. Now everything wokrs fine....but no. Now, when I'm reading files, on 1024 file exception raises: "System resource exceeded". But I have lots of free resources. When I remove BDE, everything's fine again, no "system resource exceeded" error, but I cant read all files. Help please. PS: Tried using ODBC but nothing changes.

  Hi Everyone, I found the following code to check if a file exists on a server, but is not working for me. It tells me that "test1.tx" does not exist even though the file exists and its size is 498 bytes. If I try with Ftp.ListDirectory it tells me that the file does not exist. If I try with Ftp.GetFileSize it does not provide any results and the debugger's immediate gives me the following message: A first chance exception of type 'System.Net.WebException' occurred in System.dll. Using "request.UseBinary = true" does not make any difference. • Ruby and duck typing: design by contract impossible?

  Method signature in Java: public List<String> getFilesIn(List<File> directories) similar one in ruby def get_files_in(directories) In the case of Java, the type system gives me information about what the method expects and delivers. In Ruby's case, I have no clue what I'm supposed to pass in, or what I'll expect to receive. In Java, the object must formally implement the interface. In Ruby, the object being passed in must respond to whatever methods are called in the method defined here. This seems highly problematic: Even with 100% accurate, up-to-date documentation, the Ruby code has to essentially expose its implementation, breaking encapsulation. "OO purity" aside, this would seem to be a maintenance nightmare. The Ruby code gives me no clue what's being returned; I would have to essentially experiment, or read the code to find out what methods the returned object would respond to. Not looking to debate static typing vs duck typing, but looking to understand how you maintain a production system where you have almost no ability to design by contract. Update No one has really addressed the exposure of a method's internal implementation via documentation that this approach requires. Since there are no interfaces, if I'm not expecting a particular type, don't I have to itemize every method I might call so that the caller knows what can be passed in? Or is this just an edge case that doesn't really come up?

  Maybe I am just having a slow day, but for the life of me I can't figure out why this is happening. I haven't done CakePHP in a while and I am trying to use the 1.3 version, but this doesn't seem to be working... If I run something like: $this->Building->find('all', array('recursive' => 2)); I get empty [Area] arrays for all the Buildings even though there are plenty of Areas in the OR_AREA table that are associated to buildings. Not only that, the Query Table doesn't even show CakePHP attempted to find anything but all the records in OR_BLDG. All the more puzzling, if I do: $this->Area->find('all'); I get all the Areas and the [Building] arrays are populated when appropriate. What am I missing?

• What's next for all of these Microsoft "overlapping" and "enhanced" products ?

  Recently I attended a road show, organised by MS Gold Partner company in the UK. The products discussed were: SharePoint server (2010 and 2007), Exchange server, Office Communication Server 2007, Exchange hosted services Office Live meeting, Office Communicator, System Center Configuration Manager and Operation Manager, VMware, Windows 7 etc. As Microsoft claims the enhancement in the each product against higher version, I felt that clients are not much interested in all these details. For example Office Communicator, surely they have improved a lot the product and first site all said 'WOW' great product, but nobody wish to pay money for all these extra features. Some argued, they are bogged down by all these increased number of menus. They don't need soft call feature included with mobile call. It apply for all other products as well such as MS office (next what 2 ribbons ?), windows OS and many more. Indeed there must be good features in all these products, but is it worth to spend money and time to update the older system ? Also sometimes these feature will decrease the productivity instead increase it. *So do you think what ever enhancement MS is doing in the products is only for selling purpose, not a real use ?? and I think also keep the developer busy learning the new tools and features. * I am sure some some people here will argue that some people need this sort of features. But I am not talking about NASA or MI5 guys. I am talking of usual businesses and joe public. Any ideas welcome.

• Binding ListBox ItemCount to IvalueConverter

I'm having a problem where I have a collection of AggregatedLabels and I am trying to bind the ItemCount of each AggregatedLabel to the FontSize in my DataTemplate so that if the ItemCount of an AggregatedLabel is large then a larger fontSize will be displayed in my listBox etc. The part that I am struggling with is the binding to the ValueConverter.   I'm currently working on an implementation of the following idea, and I was wondering if there is any literature on this subject. Working with Java, but the principle applies on any language with a decent type-system, I like to implement: matching Objects from a List using a RegularExpression-esque search: So let's say I have a List containing List<Object> x = new ArrayList<Object>(); x.add(new Object()); x.add("Hello World"); x.add("Second String"); x.add(5); // Integer (auto-boxing) x.add(6); // Integer Then I create a "Regular Expression" (not working with a stream of characters, but working with a stream of Objects), and instead of character-classes, I use type-system properties: [String][Integer] And this would match one sublist: {Match["Second String", 5]}. The expression: [String:length()<15] Will match two sublist (each of length 1) containing a String which instance is passing the expression instance.length() < 5: {Match["Hello World"],Match["Second String"]}. [Object][Object] Matches any pair in the List: {Match[Object,"Hello World"],Match["Second String", 5]}, in a streamed manner (no overlapping matches). Ofcourse, my implementation will have grouping, lookahead/lookbehinds and is hierarchical (i.e. matching n elements from Lists in Lists), etc. The above merely illustrates the concept. • Is this GetEnumAsStrings<T>() method reinventing the wheel?

  I have a number of enums and need to get them as List<string> objects in order to enumerate through them and hence made the GetEnumAsStrings<T>() method. But it seems to me there would be an easier way. • svn dev cycle. howto lots minor "features" pending for approval.

  Hi I've read similar questions regarding that but still feel the need to ask a question. I have scenario where we have lots of tiny "features" pending for approval. I generally see two approaches. 1.Keep trunk solid and have tons of branches for each tiny "feature". Basically every new thingy is a branch. Cons: - Might become nightmare to support so many branches no matter how small a change. Keeping all branches in sync etc etc. - Worst con I see in this is setup of test system so one can easily examine changes to approve (basically need to support all branches which seems insane). Pros: - Seemningly easy once approved a branch to be merged back to trunk and new release to be tagged and deployed. 2.For big features a branch is released and for small changes all goes in trunk(relatively stable) directly. Pros: - Easier to set test system as most of the time all will be directly visible. For big features should be easy to maintain separate branch on test. Cons: - Don't really see how release will go. I will not be able to basically release one part of trunk This would involve cherrypicking which is crazy to follow. Other approach is I just enforce that after some time (a week or so) all small features need to be approved so they can deployed before giving new tasks. I just create release branch and either all or none of small features are going live. This will be some fun discussion with head people. I guess having lots of small pending stuff is very problematic to follow technically.

  Trying to tail / parse some log files. Entries start with a date then can span many lines. This works, but does not ever see new entries to file. • Execute less compiler anywhere on the computer

  I'm having a little problem with executing *.cmd files so I can execute them anywhere on the computer with cmd. What I exactly want is to execute the less.cmd file, which support optional arguments and uses lessc.wsf (Less.js compiler for Windows Script Host) for converting less css to pure css. The less.cmd contains: ::For convenience @cscript //nologo "%~dp0lessc.wsf" %* What I've done so far: added absolute path to lessc.cmd to the PATH system variable and moved .cmd in the PATHTEXT system variable to the beginning. Also did this: From a command prompt; assoc .bat should return with ..bat=batfile If not assoc .bat=batfile to restore the default file type association. ftype batfile should return with batfile="%1" %* If not ftype batfile="%1" %* to restore the default "Open" action for the file type. This still doesn't work unless I approach the cmd file with a absolute path in cmd, if I enter lessc anywhere else then I get C:\Intel Intel is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. , I've restarted my computer more than once to be sure changes will take effect. I hope somebody has the answer.

  I am working on a site that currently uses a basic authentication dialog box login system, that is the type of dialog that you get if you go here: http://www.dur.ac.uk/vm.boatclub/password/index.php I did not set this system up and am not in a position to easily/quickly work around it, but it DOES work. The issue however is that the dialog box is not very helpful in telling you what login information you have to use (that is which username and password combination), and so I would like to replace it with a form. I had been thinking that this wasn't possible but I wanted to ask in order to find out. Is it possible to set up an HTML form that sends the data to the server such that it accepts it in the same way that it would using this dialog box? Alternatively is it possible to set up a PHP script that would take normal form data and process it somehow passing it to the server such that it logs in? Edit: After being told that this is basic authentication I went around and have managed to find a way that works and keeps the user persistently logged in. However, this does not work in internet explorer. The solution was simply to redirect the user to: http://username:[email protected]/vm.boatclub/password/index.php But Internet Explorer removed it due to phishing uses about 3 years ago. Is there a way to use javascript to get the browser to access the site in this way? Or will I have to simply change my UI?

• Splitting EJBs and interfaces into separate module -- deployment fails

  I'm having trouble following this guide to "extract" my interfaces and entities from my EAR to use them from another Web Application: I use NetBeans 6.8 and Glassfish 3.0.1 "Java Class Library" project contains all the entities and interfaces "Java EE Application" project class library added to the project, is packaged into the EAR contains EJB implementations, MDBs, Test "Java Web Application" project class library added to the project, is packaged into the WAR contains REST interface When I build and deploy the Web Application, all goes well. When I build the JEE application, I can see the jar-file (interfaces, entities) being included. • Error with Property Validation in Form Submission in ASP.NET MVC

  I have a simple form on an ASP.NET MVC site that I'm building. This form is submitted, and then I validate that the form fields aren't null, empty, or improperly formatted. However, when I use ModelState.AddModelError() to indicate validation errors from my controller code, I get an error when my view is re-rendered. In Visual Studio, I get that the following line is highlighted as being the location of the error: <%=Html.TextBox("Email")%> The error is the following: NullReferenceException was unhandled by user code - object reference not set to an instance of an object. My complete code for that textbox is the following: <p> <label for="Email">Your Email:</label> <%=Html.TextBox("Email")%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Email", "*") %> </p> Here's how I'm doing that validation in my controller: try { System.Net.Mail.MailAddress address = new System.Net.Mail.MailAddress(email); } catch { ModelState.AddModelError("Email", "Should not be empty or invalid"); } return View(); Note: this applies to all of my fields, not just my Email field, as long as they are invalid.

  Can someone explain me why this code compiles and runs fine, despite the fact that SortedSet is an interface and not a concrete class: public static void main(String[] args) { Integer[] nums = {4, 7, 8, 14, 45, 33}; List<Integer> numList = Arrays.asList(nums); TreeSet<Integer> numSet = new TreeSet<Integer>(); numSet.addAll(numList); SortedSet<Integer> sSet = numSet.subSet(5, 20); sSet.add(17); System.out.println(sSet); } It prints normally the result: [7, 8, 14, 17] Furthermore, my wonder is heightened by the fact that the SortedSet cannot be instansiated (expectedly). This line does not compile: SortedSet<Integer> sSet = new SortedSet<Integer>(); However, if I try the code: public static void main(String[] args) { Integer[] nums = {4, 7, 8, 14, 45, 33}; List<Integer> numList = Arrays.asList(nums); numList.add(56); System.out.println(numList); } it throws an UnsupportedOperationException. I reckon, this comes from the fact that List is an interface and cannot be handled as a concrete class. What is true about SortedSet?

• Java Iterators - Trying to get a for each loop to work

  So I have a Tree<E> class where E is the datatype held and organized by the tree. I'd like to iterate through the Tree like this, or in a way similar to this: 1. Tree<String> tree=new Tree<String>(); 2. ...add some nodes... 3. for (String s : tree) 4. System.out.println(s); It gives me an error on line 3 though. Incompatible types required: java.lang.String found: java.lang.Object The following works fine and as expected though, performing a proper in-order traversal of the tree and printing each node out as it should: for (TreeIterator<String> i = tree.iterator(); i.hasNext(); ) System.out.println(i.next()); Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Do you need to see more of the code?

• Update mapping table in Linq

  I have a table Customers with a CustomerId field, and a table of Publications with a PublicationId field. Finally, I have a mapping table CustomersPublications that records which publications a customer can access - it has two fields: CustomerId field PublicationId. For a given customer, I want to update the CustomersPublications table based on a list of publication ids. I want to remove records in CustomersPublications where the PublicationId is not in the list, and add new records where the PublicationId is in the list but not already in the table. This would be easy in SQL, but I can't figure out how to do it in Linq. For the delete part, I tried: var recordsToDelete = dataContext.CustomersPublications.Where ( cp => (cp.CustomerId == customerId) && ! publicationIds.Contains(cp.PublicationId) ); dataContext.CustomersPublications.DeleteAllOnSubmit(recordsToDelete); ... but that didn't work. I got an error: System.NotSupportedException: Method 'Boolean Contains(Int32)' has no supported translation to SQL So, I tried using Any(), as follows: var recordsToDelete = dataContext.CustomersPublications.Where ( cp => (cp.CustomerId == customerId) && ! publicationIds.Any(p => p == cp.PublicationId) ); ... and this just gives me another error: System.NotSupportedException: Local sequence cannot be used in LINQ to SQL implementation of query operators except the Contains() operator Any pointers? [I have to say, I find Linq baffling (and frustrating) for all but the simplest queries. Better error messages would help!]

• How do I browse a Websphere MQ message without removing it?

  I'm writing a .NET Windows Forms application that will post a message to a Websphere MQ queue and then poll a different queue for a response. If a response is returned, the application will partially process the response in real time. But the response needs to stay in the queue so that a daily batch job, which also reads from the response queue, can do the rest of the processing. I've gotten as far as reading the message. What I haven't been able to figure out is how to read it without removing it. Here's what I've got so far. I'm an MQ newbie, so any suggestions will be appreciated. And feel free to respond in C#.   I am trying to debug a HTTP Handler in Visual Studio and the break point is not getting hit. Does anyone have an idea on how to go about debugging HTTP Handlers in Visual Studio? I am using VS 2010 Premium, .NET 4.0 on a Windows 7 machine. In my Web Application I have a HTTP Handler in /HTTPHandler/TrackingHandler.cs The following is in my web config file: <system.webServer> <handlers> <add name="TrackingHandler" path="/tx/*" verb="*" type="ProjectNamespace.TrackingHandler" resourceType="Unspecified" preCondition="integratedMode" /> </handlers> </system.webServer> My HTTP Handler looks like below namespace ProjectNamespace { public class TrackingHandler : IHttpHandler { public bool IsReusable { get { return true; } } public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { //Breakpoint on the very first line below string tracker = Path.GetFileName(context.Request.PhysicalPath); ....... } } } I start my Web Application using any random page in Visual Studio Debug using the builtin Web Server. I then maually edit the URL to point to the /tx/ directory and some random string after it. For e.g. my current URL looks like http://localhost:53699/tx/sdfs. I thought this should pull up the breakpoint on the first line of ProcessRequest() but it does not. I’d be grateful for any ideas. O. O.
