• Creating triangles using borders

  I recently needed to create speech bubbles. To create the little tip at the end of the speech bubble, i used a css technique where the element is given a 0 width and 0 height and given borders. Making certain borders transparent would create diagonals. This works great, and i am able to manipulate different borders to create triangles/shapes to my liking. The problem is, i don't fully understand why this works. I understand that it all starts out with a rectangle and as you set one or more of the borders to transparent it creates a diagonal. My question is how does this work ? And why does it create a diagonal in the first place ? EDIT: To clarify, i would like to know the theory behind why this technique works.

• Which PHP calendar will suit my needs? Or build my own?

  There are so many web based calendars out there that I'm not sure which will best suit my purposes. I want to create an events calendar, which I suppose looks and functions in much the same way as google calendar. But users shouldn't need to sign up for a gmail account or a google account. Users of my social network website should be able to create events in the calendar and share it with other friends in their "friend network". In month, year or day views, you can mouse hover events to see a bubble dialog that lists events in detail. People need to pay a monthly fee to use my website (not sure if this prevents me from using google apps). So is something like Google Calendar the way to go? Or are there other php/javascript calendars out there that already meet my needs? Or will it just save me more time to build my own?

• Alternative way to notify the user of an error

  I have a winform software that communicates with hardware through a protocol. Sometimes error in communication happens and i would like to notify the user. Errors could be for example: timeouts, crc errors, physical disconnection etc... I have a communication window in which i show these errors, but by default this is hidden. The user can open it though the menubar. Popups are annoying to the user (and to myself) so i would like a un-invasive way to notify the user that an error has occurred. Perhaps a info bubble like when XP tells you updates are ready for your computer? I know that NotifyIcon can help put things in the system tray, which i do not wish to have. I'd rather keep it within my MDI. I'm open to other creative ideas as well.

  Guys & gals, Hope someone can shed some light on this. I am downloading reports from an AIX-based system by directing them to a TT printer which the terminal emulator (MultiView 2000) intercepts and directs to the default printer on the local system. This local printer is configured as a vanilla Generic/Text printer attached to a FILE port. When I print from AIX, the output is spooled down and the local printer prompts for a file name into which to save the file...but not under Windows 7. This has worked fine for many years, on both Win2K and WinXP. However, on Windows 7 the output gets spooled as a file into spool\PRINTERS (and looks as expected) but the print job then hangs with a status of "Error - Printing" and never prompts for a file name. I have to cancel the job. The Generic/Text printer works as expected with other applications. I have tried setting the printer to print directly rather than spooling but this only serves to hang the terminal session too. I've also tried to run the emulator in Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode and as Administrator in case it was something like that but with no luck. As you might expect, it does work fine in XP Mode (as long as I print to a printer defined therein and not the host's printer) but operationally this isn't going to be an option. Obviously this emulation software is a decade old (at least) and I could just cross/upgrade all the users (at a cost) but, before I do so, has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before and found some sort of fix?   I have made a bash command which generates a one liner for restarting all Weblogic ( 8,9,10) instances on a server /usr/ucb/ps auwwx | grep weblogic | tr ' ' '\n' | grep security.policy | grep domain | awk -F'=' '{print $2}' | sed 's/weblogic.policy//' | sed 's/security\///' | sort | sed 's/^/cd /' | sed 's/$/ ; cd .. ; \/recycle_script_directory_path\/recycle/ ;' | tr '\n' ' ' To restart a Weblogic instance, the recycle ( /recycle_script_directory_path/recycle/) script needs to be initiated from within the domain directory as the recycle script pulls some application information from some .ini files in the domain directory. The following part of the script generates a line to cd to the parent directory of the app i.e. the domain directory sed 's/$/ ; cd .. ; \/recycle_script_directory\/recycle/ ;' | tr '\n' ' ' I am sure there is a better way to cd to the parent directory like cd dirname but every time i run the following cd command , it throws a "Variable syntax" error. cd $(dirname '/domain_directory_path/app_name') How do i incorporate the cd to the directory name in a better way ? • itunes iphone sync stuck on "Waiting for items to copy"

  superuser crowd, I've found a number of threads about this, but have yet to find a satisfactory answer. Perhaps I'll have better luck on this site?? I hope so... I'm having a problem with iTunes where syncing my iPhone ends up seeming to basically finish, but it says "Waiting for items to copy" after everything else, and just stays there for... well, a very long time, if I let it. Oh, and I'm not sure this is always the case, but at the moment, it's doing this while "Syncing Genius Data to [my iPhone] (Step 8 of 8)". If I click the little x in iTunes, it then gets stuck on "Canceling sync", for an equally indefinite sort of period. If I simply unplug the phone, everything seems to be synced and happy, but the next time I sync, it happens again. I presume this is a bug of some sort on Apple's part, but it seems like people have found workarounds... I'm just having trouble tracking one down that (a) is well described enough that I can actually follow it, (b) has enough detail that I can do it without losing data (i.e. tells me pathnames that I might want to copy first, or the like, before telling me to remove something) (note: see also point (a) -- I can't remove it if it's telling me to remove something that I don't know where it is!), and (c) otherwise seems sane. I'm hoping that here perhaps I'll get better luck -- with either a workaround, and/or debugging tips for figuring out how to find myself a workaround. Note: I'm busy with some other things at the moment, but can try to add some additional information later, if necessary.

  Looking for an easy way to postprocess rpm -q output so it reports the total size of all subpackages matching a regexp, e.g. see the aspell* example below. (Short of scripting it with Python/PERL/awk, which is the next step) (Motivation: I'm trying to remove a few Gb of unnecessary packages from a CentOS install, so I'm trying to track down things that are a) large b) unnecessary and c) not dependencies of anything useful like gnome. • laptop motherboard "shorts" when connected to adapter

  Disclaimer: I'm sort of a noob, and this is a long post. Thank you all in advance! summary: completely dead laptop with no signs of life whatsoever (suddenly, for no apparent reason) Here's the deal: Lenovo Y470 (only a few months old with no water or shock damage). It stopped working suddenly (no lights, no sound, even when connecting adapter with or without battery). I tried a different adapter (same electrical rating), but no luck. I disassembled the thing completely, and tried plugging in the adapter and looking for signs of life with all different combinations of components installed (tried all combinations of RAM, CPU, USB power cords, screen, etc plugged in). no luck. Then, I noticed (as I was plugging in the adapter to try for the millionth time) that there was a "spark" for an instant when I first connect the adapter to the power jack. The adapter's LED would then flash (indicating it isn't working or charging). So, I thought the power jack has a short of some sort (due to bad soldering or something). Scanned virtually every single component on the motherboard, and tested the power jack connections with a multimeter. No shorts or damage to anything on the entire motherboard. Now I'm thinking I need to replace the motherboard. But, my actual question: What does this "shorting" when connecting the adapter signify? (btw, the voltage across the power connections and current through it drop to virtually zero when the adapter is connected and "sparks", and they stay that way). The bewildering thing is that there are no damaged components, and the voltage across adapter terminals returns to normal after I disconnect it (so it's not damaged). Please take a look at the pictures (of the motherboard's power connection and nearby components) and see if I'm missing something completely obvious... • IDE/PATA high-speed hard drive dock

  I frequently need to access bare drives for backups and need a quick, high-speed way to deal with them. There are a multitude of SATA hard drive docks (for example), but I have a lot of IDE/PATA (hereafter "IDE") drives that I would like to be able to use similarly. There are IDE-to-SATA adapters so you can plug your IDE hard drive into a SATA port, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't use the same technology to have a native dock, yet none seems to exist. Now, I'm aware that 3.5" IDE drives do not have a specification for the layout of the connector, and therefore can't be slapped into a dock the same way a SATA drive could, but 2.5" PATA drives do. In fact, I'm not terribly interested in supporting 3.5" drives. It would be nice, but I deal with them far less frequently than 2.5" drives. Also, I'd very much like for the connection to the computer be faster than USB, preferably eSATA, I don't want to be spending time mounting a drive inside an enclosure, I don't want bare drives lying around with a cable hanging off of them, and I'd prefer a single dock rather than two. What seems like the ideal solution to me would be a regular SATA→eSATA dock and some sort of screwless adapter for IDE drives, but I'm open to any suggestions, regardless of my stated preferences, but which are, in some sort of order of preference: high-speed (faster than USB, at least) holder for drive (not just a cable) no complicated enclosure support for 3.5" IDE drives single dock Updates: Here's a 3.5" IDE to 3.5" SATA docking adapter that could be part of the solution. Weird. I figured that would be the impossible part. I was hoping to find something like this 2.5" to 3.5" SATA chassis that would take a 44-pin IDE drive internally. It looks like the Vantec EZ Swap EX comes awfully close. It has its own bay dock, but it looks like the SATA ports on the back are spaced properly, even if they're not aligned quite properly. Unfortunately, the proper position is at the very edge of the drive, which means that the docks' connectors are at the very edge of their recesses, which means there's no way to fit it in there.

• How can I bridge a VM to a remote network?

  I have a system running QEMU/KVM (via libvirt). One of its VMs needs to have a presence on a subnet that is not local to the VM host. I have a Linux system on the remote subnet. Is there a way to set up some sort of tunneled bridge to cause the VM to appear present on the remote system? This will be a temporary situation (hopefully just until the VM owner can configure their system) and network performance and long-term maintainability aren't really issues. To give some more concrete information: My VM host has IP address 192.168.54.155/24. The VM has IP address 192.168.65.71/24. I have a remote system at 192.168.65.254/24. Both the VM host and remote system are running Scientific Linux 6.5. I do not control the network or routing in between the VM host and remote system. I do not have access to the guest OS on the VM. I would like traffic to the VM's IP address to end up at the VM even though its host isn't directly connected to the appropriate network. I've tried using iproute2's tunnelling, but Linux won't let me add a tunnel to a bridge. I've considered using some sort of iptables mangling to route traffic over the tunnel and make the VM think it's on the right network, but I'm not sure whether there are better approaches. What's the best way to accomplish this hack?

• fax server farm architechture

  I'm not sure this is the right forum for this, but it's not Stackoverflow so... I'm trying to figure out an architecture to solve the following problem, maybe someone here can help: I have a T1 with 23 fax lines coming into the building. I have a computer (Macintosh XServe) running Hylafax. If I had one POTS line, I'd be done. However, I have no idea how to get the T1 into the Mac... Options I've considered: some sort of PCI T1-modem (Does that exist?) Splitting the T1 into 23 POTS lines and then connecting 23 analog modems to the mac, either via an external modem bank (Do they still make those?) or via some sort of external PCI bank, which will allow me to use more than 2 4-port modem cards. Either the T1 or the split POTS lines going into some intermediate device and then transfering the images over IP, or USB to the mac. Really, any other option I can come up with This has GOT to be a problem that someone has already solved, right?

• How to transfer Windows Vista disk image to new machine

  I'm trying to upgrade a user's machine to some better hardware. I know of Easy Transfer, but I'd rather not have to reinstall all the programs that are already present. (Some of which are no longer available, anyway). Instead, I'm trying to transfer the entire disk image from one machine to the other, but I ran into issues. If I copy the partition image over to the new machine using Clonezilla, I get errors on boot saying that I need to insert the Vista install disk and run repair. I do that, but it then says that it is unable to repair whatever it is that's broken. Next, I tried to sysprep the old machine before creating the image, but sysprep fails saying that it encountered some sort of system error. Should it be possible to sysprep any arbitrary machine, or does it only work on a relatively clean install? Could it be a missing driver that is tripping me up? The new machine is a fairly stock desktop that shouldn't need any special drivers beyond what's already present in standard Vista. Are there any foolproof methods for doing this sort of thing?

• Sorting/grouping when there are multiple values in one cell

  I have an Excel 2007 spreadsheet, where each row of the dataset describes a feature of a piece of software. One of the columns in the spreadsheet is Relevant Users, which describes which users of the software the feature is of interest to. There may be a couple of different users interested in a feature, in which case I've been filling in the cell with the two user types separated by a colon, e.g. 'Usertype A; Usertype D'. Occassionally, I'd like to sort my data by the Relevant Users column. However, the way I'm populating the column means the sorting isn't very smart. If I have a feature where 'Relevant Users' is 'Usertype A; Usertype D', and then I sort by Relevant Users, that feature will be grouped at the end of all the other features of relevant to Usertype A, as it's just sorting alphabetically. But I want it to be listed in the two separate groups of Usertype A and Usertype D. Or, if I have a pivot table that groups the features together under the heading of Relevant User, I'll get all the features for 'Usertype A', then 'Usertype B', then 'Usertype C', then 'Usertype D', then 'Usertype A; Usertype D', etc. Whereas I really want a feature with Relevant Users as 'Usertype A; Usertype D' to show up in both the Usertype A group and the Usertype D group. I guess if this information was in a database I might have a many-to-many table linking Relevant Users to features. But is there a way to go about having this kind of many-to-many relationship in Excel?

• Simulate SNMP traps to test surveillance

  I'm trying to use Net-SNMP on Windows to emulate a trap that should trigger an alarm on our surveillance system. This is the setup: Windows 7 client that sends the trap Net-SNMP as software for sending the trap Linux with Adventnet ManageEngine OpManager as NMS (not relevant) This is what I'm trying to accomplish send trap with OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.5089.1.0.1 (according to the MIB I have loaded into my NMS) and just some sort of message into it to see if I can get any alarm in my NMS. I can see that I actually send a trap in my firewall, but I have no idea what it contains. This is my attempt so far: snmptrap.exe -v 2c -c xxxxxxx 192.168.100.65 '' 6 0 .1.3.6.1.4.1.5089.1.0.1 s "123456" However, I can't seem to find any reasonable documentation with examples for snmptrap. Basically, I need to know what: '' <- why do I need this? I can omit it and it will still send a trap 6 <- Enterprise gneric trap, I assume. Is this correct? 0 <- I have no idea, I need some sort of value for this .1.3.6.1.4.1.5089.1.0.1 <- the enterprise specific OID I assume, should this be followed by some more numbers s <- indicates string "123456" <- just a random test-string... This doesn't make much sense to me, and if anyone can shed some light on this I would be very grateful.

• Performance experiences for running Windows 7 on a Thin-Client?

  Has anyone else tried installing Windows 7 on thin-client hardware? I'd be very interested to hear about other people's experiences and what sort of hardware tweaks they had to do to get it to work. (Yes, I realize this is completely unsupported.. half the fun of playing with machines and beta/RC versions is trying out unsupported scenarios. :) ) I managed to get Windows 7 installed on a modified Wyse 9450 Thin-Client and while the performance isn't great, it is usable, particularly as an RDP workstation. Before installing 7, I added another 256Mb of ram (512 total), a 60G laptop hard-drive and a PCI videocard to the 9450 (this was in order to increase the supported screen resolution). I basically did this in order to see whether or not it was possible to get 7 installed on such minimal hardware, and see what the performance would be. For a 550Mhz processor, I was reasonably impressed. I've been using the machine for RDP for the last couple of days and it actually seems slightly snappier than the default Windows XP embedded install (although this is more likely the result of the extra hardware). I'll be running some more tests later on as I'm curious to see particularl whether the streaming video performance will improve. I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences getting 7 to work on extremely low-powered hardware. Particularly any sort of tweaks that you've discovered in order to increase performance..

• Improving browser performance while using lots of tabs?

  My browsing habits cause me to open lots of windows and tabs, either related to different projects I'm working on or things I may want to read later. I use OSX and use about 5 spaces with multiple windows in each space. The problem is eventually I'll have around 200 or more tabs open (spread over 15-20 windows) that I don't want to close. Needless to say, my computer's performance starts to degrade. As I write this on my mobile, Safari on my laptop is locking up the computer. I used to use Chrome but found better performance with Safari. What I'd like to know, is there a graph of browser performance based on tab usage? I don't need a browser that keeps all tabs active. It would be great if the browser could increase performance by "putting tabs to sleep". Or if there was some sort of tool for saving a "workspace" of tabs that you could reactivate the next time you are working on that project. What sort of solution can you recommend to solve this problem?

  I have a problem whereby a terminal appears not to be logging events correctly and occasionally appears to have problems communicating accross the network.The terminal has previously been infected with a virus which apears to have 'played' with the default group policy in the standard user profile. Although, outwardly, the terminal appears to be working normally I still have a nagging feeling that it isn't quite back to the way it was. It was infected by a user plugging in a USB Stick while the company was using the older version of the AV software...typically a week or so before it was updated.I have configured the Event logs to Overwrite as required and to be 5056KB in Maximum size. I have also attempted:- Disabling the Event Log service & restarting Renewing the EVT files in Windows\system32\config directory Restarting the event log service and restarting Clearing the event log in the Services MMC Resetting the Filters to Default in the services MMC Using the EVENTCREATE command remotely from a CMD window on the server to force an event creation event. So far the only operation to have any sort of success is the remote computer EVENTCREATE command from a CMD window on the server. As it stands, the only other time that the computer has managed to create events is while it is being restarted.Has anyone gotany ideas on how to proceed? I'm thinking that possibly a refresh of the 'Windows\system32\config\SystemProfile' folder. I'm also thinking about running a tool such as Malwarebytes but this could be slightly controvertial as the system needs to be running on 'up-time' for as long as possible. I'm also wonderign whether anyone knows of any Windows admin tools that allow me to control the event logging options or default security options so that i could get it back to some sort of standard.What I'm trying to avoid is a complte re-imaging of the terminal. Although this is an option, I dont really want to have to take it if i dont need to.Many thanks in advance for any suggestions anyone may be able to provide.

• Can I use IIS to do ActiveDirectory single-sign-on for another website?

  I'm trying to add Active Directory single-sign-on support to an existing SOAP server. The server can be configured to accept a trusted reverse-proxy and use the X-Remote-User HTTP header for the authenticated user. I want to configure IIS to be the trusted proxy for this service, so that it handles all of the Active Directory authentication for the SOAP server. Basically IIS would have to accept HTTP connections on port X and URL Y, do all the authentication, and then proxy the connection to a different server (most likely the same X and Y). Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of IIS or AD (so I am trying my best to learn enough to build this solution) so please be gentle. I would assume that this is not an uncommon scenario, so is there some easy way to do this? Is this sort of functionality built into IIS or do I need to build some sort of IIS proxy program myself? Is there a better option for getting the authentication done and the X-Remote-User HTTP header set than requiring IIS? • dovecot login issue with plain passwords

  I am having an odd problem in dovecot, the first time I try to login via telnet dovecot gives a error, the second time it works, both within the same telnet session. • gitolite mac don't add new user to authorized_keys

  I installed gitolite and every thing works fine for me as admin. But when I'd like to add add a new user the new user can't connect to the server. After I looked into the file authorized_keys I saw that the new user wasn't added to the file.
