• Server load high, CPU idle. NFS the cause?

  I am running into a scenario where I'm seeing a high server load (sometimes upwards of 20 or 30) and a very low CPU usage (98% idle). I'm wondering if these wait states are coming as part of an NFS filesystem connection. Could NFS be the cause here or should I be worried about something else? This is a VPS box on a fiber channel SAN. I'd think the bottleneck wouldn't be the SAN. Comments?

• Being a more attractive job candidate - Certs XOR Degree

  I'm currently working in an IT position, where I do helpdesk stuff, and predominantly security related issues/consulting (In the loosest sense of the term) In-House and for Service-Contract clients (as the only/acting CCSP [I guess I should say only person with Cisco experience] in my organization). I've professionally written Kernel Mode drivers for a gaming company. Among other things that I'm proud to put on a resume. I think of myself as very reasonably qualified as a System Administrator, With excellent Cisco experience, among other things I think would make a good addition to almost any IT staff in need of a new employee. However, Something has always tripped me up - Human Resources. Let me explain, I decided to skip the university route - I'm immensely glad that I did, The computer science graduates that I've met and work with rarely know much of anything about Computers (Until they gain some 'real' experience), Even when asked about Theoretical Computing fundamentals they can rattle something off about Turing Completeness but rarely do they understand the mathematical underpinnings. In short, I think instead of going to college, I'd rather pick up some real world experience. However, Apparently, Employers rarely think the same way. A quick perusal of jobs through the standard job search engine yields nothing short of a conspiracy to exclude anyone without 'A Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Equivalent'. Interviews I've had in the past have almost always been entangled with - 1. My Age (Which I can't really change) and 2. Lack of Degree. Employers frequently disregard the CCNA/CCSP, The experience I've gained through internships, My extensive experience in x86 assembly and C, among so many other things I like to think are valuable to employers - In lieu of the fact that I don't have a piece of paper. So, AS AN EMPLOYER - Is it even worth working on my CCIE? Or should I pad my resume with certifications that are easier to acquire (Like CISSP, MSCE, Network+, etc.). Or should I ditch the whole idea and head back to get a Mathematics or CS degree?

• Vlans and subinterfaces

  I've inherited a moderate size network that I'm trying to bring some sanity to. Basically, its 8 public class Cs and a slew of private ranges all on one vlan (vlan1, of course). Most of the network is located throughout dark sites. I need to start separating some of the network. I've changed the ports from the main cisco switch (3560) to the cisco router (3825) and the other remote switches to trunking with dot1q encapsulation. I'd like to start moving a few select subnets to different vlans. To get some of the different services provided on our address space (and to separate customers) on to different vlans, do I need to create a subinterface on the router for each vlan and, if so, how do I get the switch port to work on a specific vlan? Keep in mind, these are dark sites and geting console access is difficult if not impossible at the moment. I was planning on creating a subinterface on the router for each vlan then setting the ports with services I want to move to a different vlan to allow only that vlan. • load average in top and procs in vmstat

  As far as I know, the load average in top is the numbers of precess(threads) in running or uninterrupted sleep status, So it should be equal to (procs-r +1 )+ procs-b in vmstat, but in practice, this two number always have big gap. • Windows XP: How to delete files and folders that cannot be deleted?

  I have a backup copy of a previous Windows' Documents and Settings folder which only contains my original user and within 2 more directories: Favorites and Local Settings. When I try to delete Local Settings I get this error: When I try to delete Favorites, I get this error: I ran this in a cmd shell: attrib *.* -r -a -s -h /s ...but it did not help, nor did it return any errors/warnings. I used Unlocker v1.8.5 and LockHunter repeatedly at multiple levels to see if any files are in use, but both always say: No Files Locked. Update #1: I was able to rename the directory, which now gives me this warning before (trying to) delete: If I press Yes (or Yes to All) then I get this error: Update #2: I let chkdsk /f run which required a reboot since it's on my primary system partition. During Stage 2 scanning, I received about 40 of these: Deleting an index entry from index $0 of file 25. ...followed by: Deleting index entry cookies in index $I30 of file 37576. ...but I still get the first error dialog above when trying to delete. Update #3: Digging deeper, the 99 is the name of one of many directories located deep in here: C:\Documents and Settings.OLD\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\[email protected]\SharingMetadata\[email protected]\DFSR\Staging\CS{D4E4AE55-B5E2-F03B-5189-6C4DA6E41788}\ Inside each of those directories were files with names such as: 2300-{C93D01AC-0739-4FD9-88C7-13D2F21A208E}-v2300-{C93D01AC-0739-4FD9-88C7-13D2F21A208E}-v2300-Downloaded.frx I noticed that, unlike all the directories, I couldn't rename any of these files. I also noticed that the file + dir names were extremely long: Original directory = 194 characters Filenames = 100+ characters Together the length exceeds the 255-char limit which is bad and would explain the error message I posted in Update #1. Partial Solution: Rename all directories until the total path length is less than 100. Afterwards I was able to rename the .frx files, not to mention delete everything inside the Local Settings directory. This is only a partial solution because this (empty) directory is still undeleteable: C:\1\2\Favorites\Wien\What To Do.. I'm guessing because of the ".." at the end, Windows (Explorer and cmd) can't deal with it: Here is what Explorer properties shows: Any ideas?

• Website has become slower on a VPS, was much fast on a shared host. What's wrong?

  My shared host suspended my website stating system overload, so I moved my website to a VPS which has 4GB RAM. But for some reason the website has become very slow. I have already tried to optimize apache, mysql etc. Update 2: CPU usage is low, see uptime output: 11:09:02 up 7 days, 21:26, 1 user, load average: 0.09, 0.11, 0.09 Update 3: When I load any webpage, browser shows "Waiting" for a long time and then page loads quickly. • Picking a degree path...

  I'll be going to University of South Florida soon, and have to choose between two degrees, I want to head into general Server (IT) administration for a small / medium business. Setting up computers, imaging, managing file servers / logon servers /etc. * I had to change the http to hxxp in order to post. I have two degrees I'm currently choosing between: - BSAS hxxp://www.poly.usf.edu/Academics/AppliedAS/BSAS-IT/Program_of_Study.html - BSIT hxxp://www.poly.usf.edu/IT/ I like the idea of a BSAS because it'll get me out sooner, and then I can work on a few certifications to "match" the BSIT... I'm just worried companies will look at that as a "lesser" degree to a BSIT (or even a CS degree.) What are your guys' thoughts on these two degrees? The BSIT has more math, which I still have about 2 more classes to go through (I'll be heading to USF this August.) while the BSIT doesn't require those 2 extra math classes. I keep on hearing from people that when they hire you for your first job, they don't care which degree you have, as long as it's relevant and it's a 4-year degree, is this true?

  I am trying to recover data from an old Linux that was installed in a computer on an ATA hard drive. I found a ScanLogic Corp. SL11R-IDE IDE Bridge (04ce:0002), an ATA adapter to USB 1.0 like the one in the picture: and after switching it on, I plugged it into a laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. I am used to the drives being automatically mounted, but this one doesn't show up in /media. I have tried taking out the jumper, putting it as master and as CS Enabled, but didn't change the result. Any ideas?

• MySQL is killing the server IO.

  I manage a fairly large/busy vBulletin forums (running on gigenet cloud), the database is ~ 10 GB (~9 milion posts, ~60 queries per second), lately MySQL have been grinding the disk like there's no tomorrow according to iotop and slowing the site. The last idea I can think of is using replication, but I'm not sure how much that would help and worried about database sync. I'm out of ideas, any tips on how to improve the situation would be highly appreciated. Specs : Debian Lenny 64bit ~12Ghz (6 cores) CPU, 7520gb RAM, 160gb disk. Kernel : 2.6.32-4-amd64 mysqld Ver 5.1.54-0.dotdeb.0 for debian-linux-gnu on x86_64 ((Debian)) Other software: vBulletin 3.8.4 memcached 1.2.2 PHP 5.3.5-0.dotdeb.0 (fpm-fcgi) (built: Jan 7 2011 00:07:27) lighttpd/1.4.28 (ssl) - a light and fast webserver PHP and vBulletin are configured to use memcached. • Windows 7 Explorer keeps crashing

  I currently have an issue with Windows Explorer. It keeps crashing when I browse through a network drive. This is happening on several computers. • Advice on Computer Specs for overall development/general use machine

  At the moment I am restricted to a laptop with 512MB of RAM, a 120GB HDD and a 1.5GHz Intel processor for all my development and general browsing needs, and as you can probably tell using it for anything modern is a painful experience. As a result I've decided to buy myself a new desktop computer, one that will stand the test of time and one that can be upgraded easily. Rather than build the machine myself I've decided to go through Dell as I've had good experiences with them when purchasing computers for my family. • Touchpad does not respond when I am holding key on the keyboard

  I am experiencing strange problem with using my touchpad and keyboard simultaneously under Windows 7. I have HP tx2550ew (convertible tablet), and when I hold some key under Windows 7 (eg. space, a, s etc.), the touchpad seems to be blocking. I spotted this while playing Counter Strike. I am not playing much games, and I haven't been playing CS since January, so I am not sure when it started behaving like that. I have tested it also outside the game - when I hold space (eg. when on some web page and entering text into input field) or some letter key, the cursor is not able to move. The problem seems to not be occuring when I hold Shift, Ctrl nor Alt. Did any of you experience similar problem? Do you know what may have caused this? Is there any way I could check what is wrong with my laptop? I have been looking for a solution, but it seems I haven't been looking in right places. This is why I ask question here. Ps. I am unable to test whether this is touchpad-specific, because I have no mouse at my disposal at the moment (got used to touchpad so much I even find it more efficient and haven't been using a mouse with my laptop for months).

• DVI splitter not working as expected/confusion between DVI-D and -I

  Hey guys, thanks for looking. I have an ATI FirePro™ V3700 in my desktop machine, and I have been running a dual-monitor setup quite effortlessly, thanks to the two DVI ports on the card. I came upon a third monitor, and wanted to extend my desktop to 3 screens, so I purchased a DVI splitter from Amazon. Now, I can only duplicate the second monitor onto the third, not extend it. I've tried all possible combinations of input to no avail. Here's the setup: The ATI FirePro™ V3700 has two Dual-Link DVI-I outputs The splitter splits a single Dual-Link DVI-I port into two Dual-Link DVI-I outputs Two of the monitors are NEC E222W, and the third monitor is a Dell 2001FP. Each monitor has one D-Sub and one Dual-Link DVI-D input. Cables going from the video card to the monitors are two Dual-Link DVI-D to the NECs and one Single-Link DVI-D to the Dell. Is the problem likely with the DVI-D/DVI-I mismatch? Or is it with the cable on the Dell that is only a Single-Link? The cables are easily replaceable, the monitors not so much. • TEMP environment variable occasionally set incorrectly

  Occasionally, I find my TEMP and TMP environment variables set to C:\Windows\TEMP. They should be set to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp, and are configured correctly in System Properties. This manifests itself as error messages like the following: ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1). error CS2001: Source file 'C:\Windows\TEMP\gb_pz65v.0.cs' could not be found error CS2008: No inputs specified ...which occurs in various .NET applications (in particular Visual Studio 2010 or SQL Server Management Studio). Alternatively, SQL Server Management Studio will report: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: viewInfo (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlStudio.Explorer) If I run PowerShell elevated, then $env:TEMP is set correctly. If I run PowerShell non-elevated, then it's not. I believe that it should be set correctly in both cases. If not, it's the wrong way round. The same is true for CMD.EXE. Rebooting fixes it, temporarily, until something breaks it again. Presumably something loaded into Explorer.exe is messing with its environment variables, but what? The values in the registry are correct, even while this is happening: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment has TEMP = %SYSTEMROOT%\Temp HKCU\Environment has TEMP = %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp By setting a breakpoint on shell32!RegenerateUserEnvironment, I'm able to trap it when it happens, but I still don't know why explorer.exe is reading the wrong environment variables. I can reproduce it consistently by broadcasting a WM_SETTINGCHANGE message (I wrote a one-line C++ program to do this). Watching the activity in Process Monitor shows that explorer.exe doesn't even look at HKCU\Environment. What is going on?

Here's my scenario, I'm at Mac OS and I have 2 Virtual machines, one for Win 7 (VS 2010 app) and another with a Parallels Virtual Appliance with Oracle 10g Express Edition 1.1. Which provider (Oledb, ODP.NET, etc..) should I use? How to make the connection to the server in C#? • How do I install Photoshop CS2 in Wine w/ Creative Suite Installer?

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and wanted to install Photoshop CS2 in Wine (wine1.2). From what I've read, the Photoshop installer and application should both run fine. However, I don't have a specific installer for Photoshop. The setup program on the CD is for the entire Creative Suite 2 bundle. When I try to run it, I get through the splash screen, license agreement, and language selection screens, but when I click the button to start/customize the installation, the installer dies. The Photoshop CS 2 folder on the CD has two exe files, instmsia.exe and instmsiw.exe, and I tried those, hoping to find a stand-alone Photoshop installer, but neither work. I tried downloading a trial, but my license key is apparently for the entire bundle, because it didn't work. Does anyone know of a work-around for this or a way to make the Creative Suite installer work? I'm currently running Photoshop under a WinXP VM, but it would be nice to have the option of using it via Wine, so I don't have to boot the VM every time I want to edit an image (and also reading/writing to my Ubuntu shares is really slow in Virtualbox).   I have two 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD disks in a RAID 1 array. I would like to receive a notification if one of the disks in the array fails. Can anybody recommend an application I can install on the server to fire an email if such an event occurs? Here are some additional specs: Supermicro X9SCM-IIF motherboard utilising the hardware RAID controller. OS = Windows 2012 Standard Also is it possible to simulate a disk failure by pulling it out of the bay? SSDs appear to fail close together when in a mirrored config so I'd like to know ASAP if one goes down so I can swap them out with minimum delay. UPDATE 26th June 2013 ------------------------ None of the software that ships with the Supermicro X9SCM-* motherboards offer support for RAID monitoring. As has been pointed out here, these boards are built on an Intel chipset for RAID and so I installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology that supports automated email notifications on RAID failure http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-020784.htm One small issue, the software only allows you to send email notifications without SMTP authentication. I was able to resolve the problem by doing some guess work. I killed one process which I thought was culprit. Which resolved the problem. Though I would like to know what's proper approach to detect the culprit in such kind of "slow server" situations. Le me know proper way to resolving such slowness issues and decting the process causing the slowness. • Clean installation of RHEL 5.5 claims package "desktops" is missing

  Hi all, I'm a student worker in the CS department of my university, so please forgive me for any unprofessional descriptions. Simplified explanations are appreciated. I recently replaced some bad graphics cards in a few public workstations. The machines are all the same model. Before putting them back on the network I did fresh installs of RHEL---first I tried 5.4, but yum update ran into all sorts of ugly dependency errors and if I tried to remove any of the problematic packages, the whole operating system FUBAR'd. Using RHEL 5.5 gave me the same errors during install saying that "java.1.5.1-sun*" and "desktops" were missing, but yum update didn't have any dependency problems. Now that I tried logging in through the GUI, I encounter no GUI past the standard RHEL login page. The desktop is a uniform light teal and there's no system tray. An xclock window and an xterm window are open, and Firefox opens automatically, but that's it. Nothing else. What's REALLY confusing is that the computer claims that gnome is already installed, except it clearly isn't working. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. If it helps, our department uses kickstart to run our standard Linux installs. I can try to get the script if that would be of use. Thank you!

• FDE / SSD - partition and leave some unencrypted?

  Just bought a used beast of a desktop pc. The system drive is setup as a Raid 0 SSD (Intel 510 SSD Drives) with 128 each. I will probably not have to many programs beyond office and maybe Adobe CS if I spring for it, I will be keeping big data on a regular hdd. My question is about setting up TrueCrypt with my configuration. I have not previously done full disk encryption, but I feel that its probably a good idea. I have done some speed tests using file containers on the hdd and the sdd with truecrypt. While there is a huge hit with the SSDs and Truecrypt, it still outperforms the hdd on its own by a good margin, so I think i will be okay for my needs with truecrypt. I have seen in a few places that they recommend partitioning the drive and leavign some of the SSD not inside truecrypt, does this really make a difference? If so, how much should I leave? Will there be any issue in the Raid0 configuration? I am not really concerned about all the wear leveling issue, rather loose data and be secure, but since I don't need all that space neccesarily, I would like to optimize my setup for security and speed.

  I work at a university maintaining the computer science department server. I am looking for a more economical way to stream line the set up of student accounts. CS students are granted a Username and password an IIS virtual directory, FTP virtual directory, and a mysql database. Server is running windows server 2003R2 (Possibly migrating to 2008R2) The server is running a domain though no students physically log a terminal into it (No computers are part of my domain.) Creating the account is a manual process. I did right a PHP script to query the Universities AD and copy the information and write it to my AD. I then have to create basically the users home directory. I tried having AD do it but since the user never physically logs in it never creates the directory. Permissions on this folder are set to User - full, Instructors (group) - full, Users (group) - read, IUSER - read. Inside of the users folder their is a "Private" folder with permissions User - full, instructors (group) - full. Next step is IIS I create a virtual directory in the default web site pointed to the users home directory so they have a website. Same goes for FTP virtual directory in the default ftp configuration to allow the users to upload files to their website. Mysql I have to create a user and password then create a mysql scheme (database) full access for the user and full access to the instructors account to be able to access the students database. All of this is done manually and takes me a week to do. The closest description is maybe a shared hosting environment. Is there a better way to do this? Scripting wise, or better structure setup?

• C# lost local variable window from debug (f11 step by step)

I think it was called locals but I can't find it on any of the menu option.
