• Chrome tabs showing wrong page

  I have a problem with Google Chrome where occasionally when switching to a newly created tab (usually one made from opening a link into a new tab), the wrong page shows. The correct page is functional, links and other functions are present, but I cannot see them because Chrome seems to be reading the page I want but showing another. Sometimes it is identical to the tab I just left, sometimes it shows the content of a previously closed tab. The problem sorts out when I switch to another tab and back, and then the correct page shows. This happens fairly often and is rather annoying. Some of my friends have also experienced this, and have stopped using Chrome because of it. If anybody else has seen this problem and happens to know a fix, I'd really appreciate it.

My question is which subjects in computer science are (in your opinion) most important for software engineers and most applicable in practice? Please don't talk about "niche" areas of computer science (e.g. compiler construction) because of the usage of that inside that niche (e.g. helps you create compilers), but instead about areas which might be applicable and useful in a wide spectrum of software engineering problems and jobs (e.g helps you with parsing structured text).

• Internal speakers do not work

  I have a new (from scratch, not update) installation of Ubuntu 12.10 on my notebook, Asus A3Ac (It is based on Intel Centrino - Pentium M with full duplex Intel HDA codec). In older versions of Debian-based systems Intel HDA audio didn't work correctly. Alsamixer display wrong outputs and inputs (more than notebook really have). In clean installations internal speakers were playing, but they didn't mute when headphones was plugged in. There was a solution (propably not the best but working) - edit as root /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add a line "options snd-hda-intel model=z71v position_fix=1". After restart it worked correctly (alsamixer displayed correct devices and internal speakers were muted after I plugged in headphones). It was also working in Ubuntu 12.04. In Ubuntu 12.10 I have another problem. The alsamixer in default (don't have to edit alsa-base.conf) display correct outputs and inputs but internal speakers don't working if the headphones isn't plugged in. I have to manually disable "Auto-Mut" option in alsamixer, then the internal spakers works (but of course they don't mute when the headphones are pluged in). Thanks for any idea how to fix it. • PHP session files have permissions of 000 - They're ununsable

  I kept having issues with a Document Management System I'm trying to install as, at the first step of the installation process, it would error with: Warning: Unknown: open(/tmp/sess_d39cac7f80834b2ee069d0c867ac169c, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in Unknown on line 0 Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in Unknown on line 0 I looked in /tmp and saw the sess_* files have the following permissions ---------- 1 vanced vanced 1240 Jan 20 08:48 sess_d39cac7f80834b2ee069d0c867ac169c All the session files look like this. So obviously, they're unusable by PHP and it's causing me lots of problems. How can I get PHP to set the correct permissions? I've tried changing the directory which php.ini uses to /tmp/phpsessions and the same thing occurs. The directories are a+rwx.

• batch: comparing filenames and renaming [migrated]

  i'm new to both this platform and batch programming and i'm slowly but steadily driving crazy :-( I'm studying in Germany and just started on a bigger project that mainly consists of analyzing data and finding algorithms in order to maintain a certain function of a system. In order to get started i got a bunch of recorded data that, unfortunately, is not consistent when i comes to naming. Normally all files (all in one folder) should start with SPY.SPYNODE.SIDE and then go on with the specific names for each values or variables. However, the data logger messed it up a couple of times and gives weird names like SP0E1A~1.csv (all files are .csv-files). An that's when i figured in stead of renaming a couple of thousand files manually i could "easily" use a simple batch file to do that job for name. And that's exactly when I started to go crazy :-) So far i came up with the following: FOR /R %%i in (%CD%) DO ( set file1=%%i if not %file1%=="SPY.SPYNODE.SIDE" DO ( set /p "filename" < %file1% rename %file1% %filename% ) ) So what i want it to do is this (in pseudo) look through the whole folder and every file save the filename in variable file1 if file1 partially equals SPY.SPYNODE.SIDE open the file and save the first line (which contains the correct name of the file) in variable filename rename the file with the correct filename But so far it doesn't really work and i don't know why. Could anybody give me a hint or some advice how i should proceed? I really appreciate any kind of help!

• Thunderbird message sorting - wrong dates

  Thunderbird 3 is having a problem with one of my IMAP accounts. When sorted by date, it displays 10-15 messages at the top (newest) when in fact they are very old message. (pre-2010, over a year old, some up to 6-7 years old) It's not game-breaking, but it is annoying, as I have to look past those to check for "new" messages. Is there any way to fix this? I'd considered re-downloading all the messages via IMAP, but that would take weeks (50,000 messages). When I open it, it displays the correct date, also when I use "View Source" the Date: header has the correct date (2009, 2006, etc). Is there any way to make Thunderbird realize that it should be sorted down with the rest of the 2006/2009 messages? None of my other IMAP accounts (many with the same host server) have this issue.

• Multi-site Drupal install with sites on different ports using Apache ip-based hosting?

  In the past we've used name-based virtual hosting in Apache. We recently converted websites to SSL and had to go the ip-based route. As a result, we currently have an instance that is set up as follows: www.domain.com using port 80 dev.domain.com using port 8080 Both use the same IP. Is this scenario possible using Drupal multi-site functionality? While we find that dev.domain.com works and reads the correct "dev" database (using the dev settings), it reads theme files from the "www" site instead which is not what we want. Is the culprit the dev's htaccess file? Apache is listening on 8080 and does use the proper DB settings, but just not the correct theme files. One other note: browsing dev.domain.com:8080 gives an error: "The page isn't redirecting properly". Should we just purchase a new IP address for the dev website, or would this still not help? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Now it's time to give it a refresh, but even if I have a strong experience and I worked recently on many big projects my resume "feels" quite old. Maybe is the format (in Europe we have europass that is a standard) that doesn't fit the work of a developer, I don't know. Or maybe it's only me: it's 2012 and I start thinking that showing a list of projects and a bunch of acronyms in a CV like PHP, HTML, JS, CSS, whatever is quite boring for a recruiter. How is your resume? What is in your opinion the best format (a little website, a PDF showcase of the projects I worked on, just a standard CV, etc...) for a webdeveloper?

• Windows XP Log In: Can't do it. Logon Message popup.

  A friend recommended this site to me. Hope you can help! I can't seem to log into Windows. I boot my computer. The log In screen appears. I put in my user name and password, hit OK, and the following message pops up: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain name are correct, then type your password again. Letters in your passwords must be typed using the correct case". NOTE: I have tried Safe Mode and the same message pops up. Just to be clear, I am not able to get into Windows (I'm stressing this b/c I've come across some suggestions that require you to be in Windows, which doesn't help in my case). • Mouse pointer size inconsistent

  Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I've been having a problem with the mouse pointer size. On the desktop, it is quite a bit larger than it should be (24), though the different cursors (editing text, hyperlink hand, etc) are correct. The size changes to the correct size when the pointer is over some application windows (GVim, Netbeans, Firefox), but then changes back once it is moved out of the window. There was a similar question here, but the Xdefaults solution did not work for me, and I didn't want to try the one requiring editing the icon image. In addition, I've tried changing the cursor theme using sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme as well as using the dconf-editor, but though I can change the theme, the size issue remains. In case it's relevant, I'm running on a dual-screen setup with monitor sizes of 2560x1600 and 1920x1080, using the NVidia video driver. Is there another way to control pointer size, or a setting that might be messing it up? EDIT: These are the values/options I have for update-alternatives and in dconf-editor. • Solaris NFS: user permissions

  I am very new to NFS. I would like to make sure I am clear. If the NFS server shares a directory rw,, and all the files in the directory are permissions 700 and user/group for those files is root/root,,, On the client you would have to log in as root to see it. Is this correct? I am aware that a non root user on the client could make a direct connection to override this. (as in don't use the mount, just use an NFS client hack.) It really seems like anyone who has access to the client machine should have access to the files and that the client machine should be ignoring permissions. Only the server should handle permissions. Am I correct in my understanding? Is it normal to have this type of layout? Is there a way to ignore the permissions on the client side?

• Is regularly hiring and making permanent staff redundant normal? [on hold]

  Is a cycle of hiring permanent staff and then making them redundant after 1-2 years due to 're-alignment of business goals' / 'changes in priorities' normal in the technology industry? This behaviour hardly seems justifiable, and here in the UK it is questionable whether it is even legal. I begin to wonder whether some of this behaviour I have seen in this economy is due to the companies involved not wanting to pay premium rates for contractors (who I must admit in my opinion often offer no more value), and using 'redundancy' e.g. "sorry joe, you're not needed any more", as a convenient way of recreating the contracting scenario. It seems in this situation if you're a valued developer your job probably is never at risk, but I can understand it being a worry for people and I don't think it is fair on those who are mislead into thinking that they have a longer term career with the companies which do this.

• Ubuntu server 9.10 freezes up after ~10 minutes - unconventional

  There is a topic by essentially the same name, but my answer leads to another question which I would like answered so... My case is as follows: I connect through SSH to my server... no problems for many months on Ubuntu Server 9.04. Eventually I decided to updgrade and straight away I get the 10 minutes freeze problem. I went through all the possible fixes (many can be found here but my quick fix, the only that worked, leaves me with no real answer as to why and how to properly correct it... As ridiculous as it sounds... while I leave a keyboard plugged in... it runs without flaw. Can anyone make sense of this? For the sake of completeness, (although none of the following made any difference upon subsequent completion), some of the permanent changes I have made while trying to correct the issue are: replacing samba config file with 9.04 backup, booting with noapic and modifying sysctl.conf, just uncommenting additional settings for enhanced security.

• How to maintain original figure numbers in pdf document saved from Word 2007 file?

  I have a Word 2007 document in which the Figure numbers and List of Figures is correct i.e. exactly as I want. I generate a pdf (Adobe Reader X, Version 10.1.2) from Word 2007 document using the save as option. The List of Figures in the pdf document comes out exactly as present in the Word document, however when I click on that Figure number I see a different number than present in List of Figures. For example, I have this Figure number on List of Figures which is exactly as I want: But the corresponding Figure on Page 61 shows following number: It is becoming 4-21 from 4-7 because the total number of Figures from Chapters 1 till this Figure are 20. However, I want break in number of Figures between each Chapter i.e. Figures for Chapter 4 should start from 4-1, so the number 4-21 is actually 4-7 in that case. How can I correct this? Thanks.

• Does anyone write games in Delphi?

  I am a very seasoned Delphi developer (over 12 years of experience not counting my Turbo Pascal experience) and was wondering does anyone write games in Delphi? I have seen DirectX API wrappers in Delphi that allow you to program against DirectX (even wrote a simple solitaire game with a friend), but haven't seen anything out there that shows me that I should keep up with Delphi. I just hate to walk away from so much knowledge and Object Pascal language, but I am not seeing much as to a reason to keep going with Delphi. I currently program in C# and thinking about XNA, but it seems to me that the dominating opinion is go C/C++ route with DirectX. Any other Delphi developers out there struggle with this too? The downside is the risk of abuse. Actually my previous company allowed this way of commenting style, but current employer completely disallows names appearing in code. In my opinion, I would vote for discreetly commenting with author names. I'm open to hear from you if this commenting style is good or bad. Thanks.

Initially we had a Point constructor, like the following: var Point = function( x, y ) { this.x = x; this.y = y; }; But them we started to add some Vector math to it, and them decided to rename it to Vector2d. But now, some methods are a bit confusing (at least in my opinion), such as the following, which is used to make a line: //before the renaming of Point to Vector2, the parameters were startingPoint and endingPoint Geometry.Line = function( startingVector, endingVector ) { //... }; I should make a specific constructor for the Point object, or there are no problems in defining a point as a vector? I know a vector have magnitude and direction, but I see so many people using a vector to just represent the position of an object.

• Problem video nvidia ubuntu 12.04

  I just did a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 on my PC (Dell precision 370) but the video is not working as it should. Problems: When I log in to unity 3D I get a transparent bar (where the firefox, libre office, etc icons are) but I can see the tooltips when I put my mouse over where the icons are, I can see the top toolbar with no problem and I see just white on the rest of the desktop! When I log in using unity 2D I see the left bar cut in half (so I can't see the trash icon that is at the botton), the toolbar at the top shows OK and the desktop show OK but with some apps. For example, if I open a terminal and maximize it, it will only show just where the left toolbar "cuts". But if I open firefox it will open fine. Config: My PC comes with a nvidia quadro nvs 280 and I see that by default ubuntu is using the nouveau driver. Workarounds tried: I tried uninstalling the nouveau driver and the desktop works fine but I can use only unity 2D. I tried installing the nvidia-173 drivers using synaptic but I get "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first". I go to "Edit - Fix Broken packages" and I get the error: "E: Unable to correct problem, you have held broken packages.E: Error, PkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breakes, this may be caused by held packages.E:Unable to correct dependencies" Output of lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV37GL [Quadro PCI-E Series] (rev a2) Any idea so as to what I should do? Thanks in advance for any help. PS: Ah, the nvidia-173 driver was working fine on ubuntu 10.04.

• After software update, why is webmin showing wrong mySQL version?

  I did a full OS/package update on a server running webmin. Now when I go into webmin, it's showing the correct new version of Ubuntu, Apache, etc...but it's still showing the old version of mySQL. At the command line, if I enter mysql -v, it shows the correct new one, but it's just not getting recognized in webmin. I found a file at /etc/webmin/mysql called "version", and it's just a text file with the version number in it. So theoretically I could just change this and it would be fine. However, this obviously doesn't seem like how this should go. How should this file normally get updated? ETA: Services have all been restarted (in fact, there's been a full reboot). Sorry for not specifying this...it just seemed like the obvious first thing to do and not worth mentioning. :-)
