• How do I test how my client program will react to a web server error?

  I have a client program based on LibCurl. I have run into a situation where on some occasions a program on the server runs longer than the configured IIS timeout. IIS then terminates the program and returns a 502 error status to the client. I have added code to the client to capture this issue. Now, I need to find a way to prove that the change will work. I haven't been able to reliably reproduce the issue, so don't have a good test case. Any suggestions?

• Single Large v/s Multiple Small MySQL tables for storing Options

  Hi there, I'm aware of several question on this forum relating to this. But I'm not talking about splitting tables for the same entity (like user for example) Suppose I have a huge options table that stores list options like Gender, Marital Status, and many more domain specific groups with same structure. I plan to capture in a OPTIONS table. Another simple option is to have the field set as ENUM, but there are disadvantages of that as well. http://www.brandonsavage.net/why-you-should-replace-enum-with-something-else/ OPTIONS Table: option_id <will be referred instead of the name> name value group Query: select .. from options where group = '15' - Since this table is expected to be multi-tenant, the no of rows could grow drastically. - I believe splitting the tables instead of finding by the group would be easier to write & faster to execute. - or perhaps partitioning by the group or tenant? • For REST, how do I receive posted data using PHP?

  I want to set up a tiny RESTful interface for my web services using PHP. The problem is that I looked at frameworks and I cannot figure out how do I recieve the posted data without field names? For example, if a server posts data to my server, I cannot figure out how do I get it without needing the postfield (POST variables). Traditionally, with forms, people send post data with field names such as this: curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, postfield=postvalue); and I would use PHP code like this: $postvalue=$_POST[postfield]; to get value of postfield but since the server posting data is not using postfield and is just sending XML, how do I get it without fields? How do I capture the XML? That's where I am lost.

  Question about Byte-Pairing for data compression. If byte pairing converts two byte values to a single byte value, splitting the file in half, then taking a gig file and recusing it 16 times shrinks it to 62,500,000. My question is, is byte-pairing really efficient? Is the creation of a 5,000,000 iteration loop, to be conservative, efficient? I would like some feed back on and some incisive opinions please. Dave, what I read was: "The US patent office no longer grants patents on perpetual motion machines, but has recently granted at least two patents on a mathematically impossible process: compression of truly random data." I was not inferring the Patent Office was actually considering what I am inquiring about. I was merely commenting on the notion of a "mathematically impossible process." If someone has, in some way created a method of having a "single" data byte as a placeholder of 8 individual bytes of data, that would be a consideration for a patent. Now, about the mathematically impossibility of an 8 to 1 compression method, it is not so much a mathematically impossibility, but a series of rules and conditions that can be created. As long as there is the rule of 8 or 16 bit representation of storing data on a medium, there are ways to manipulate data that mirrors current methods, or creation by a new way of thinking.

• Best way to reverse bitmap data that is upside down

  Hello, I have a method that I call and it returns bitmap data from a capture device. It returns a pointer to the buffer data as an IntPtr and the buffer length as an int. I know in advance that this bitmap is a 24bpp and its width and height. The problem is that the buffer contains the bitmap data upside down and I need this data to be in the right order (reverse it). What I do is create a for loop and using CopyMemory, I copy each line (stride) of this data from bottom to up to a newly allocated memory space. Is there any way to make it faster than creating more memory each time I receive a new frame? It makes the application get a bit slow and consumes more memory as each bitmap is pretty big. I do this because I use another component that analyses the bitmaps and it doesn't work propertly if the bitmaps are upside down. I'm using .net, c# thanks!

• While Loop Taking Alot of CPU Usage

  I am creating a keystroke logger for my personal interest, as well wanting to know how to capture and use them as functions (like key shortcuts). I got the code to learn how keylogger and GetAsyncKeyState() work: http://www.rohitab.com/discuss/index.php?showtopic=9931 I got it to run under Code::Blocks, but the weirdest things is that when I check my task manager, my CPU Usage rises to 100%. When I close the program, it goes back down, and goes back up to 100 when I turn it back on. I presume it's because of the infinite while loop, constantly checking for inputs, but I wanna know if there's anyway to decrease the CPU usage, without losing function. P.S How would I make a key shortcut? Like press (Ctrl + E) to make the program exit?

  I've made a web application that has the following architecture: Every form is a UserControl, there is just one actual page (Default.aspx), and a parameter in the URL specifies which UserControl to load. The UserControl is loaded in an UpdatePanel so that it can enjoy full AJAX-iness. There is also an elaborate message displaying mechanism that I use. Eventually messages end up in one designated area on top of the Default.ASPX with some nice formatting 'n stuff. Now, I would also like to capture any unhandled exceptions that originate in the UserControl and display it in this area with all the bells-and-whistles that I've made for messages. How can I do this? The Page.Error and ScriptManager.AsyncPostBackError somehow don't work for me...

• Using SHIFT_JIS text in PHP

  I am building a form that needs to accept characters encoded in SHIFT_JIS and then send those results via email to a recipient. I've tried to simply capture the results from the $_POST variable and then to insert them into a block of text like this: $contents = <<<TEST Name: $NameJp ... TEST but that doesn't appear to work (which doesn't really surprise me). This is my first attempt at dealing with non-ASCII characters in PHP and I am hoping that people might have some suggestions. Perhaps I am missing a simple function to encode the text. Also, are there any other potential pitfalls that I might encounter? Thanks.

  I am working on a tool that monitors a number of applications and ensures they are always running and in a clean state. Some of these applications have unhandled exceptions which do occur periodically and present the 'send crash report' window. I do not have the source code to these applications. Is there any mechanism I could use to catch the exceptions, or simply identify their exception type, as well as identify the application's main executable file that threw the exception. I'm not trying to do anything crazy like catch and handle it on the applications behalf, I'm simply trying to capture the exception type, log it and then restart the application.

  I have already implemented some AJAX pagination in my Rails app by using the example code for the will_paginate plugin--which is apparently using Prototype. But if I wanted to switch to using jQuery for future additions, I really don't want to have the Prototype stuff sitting around too (yes, I know it's possible). • Create swipe controlled simple flipbook style animation in ObjC

  Hi I am a beginner in Obj C development, though quite experienced (over 10 years) with other ECMAscript based languages and OOP development. I want to build a simple flipbook style animation, controlled through swiping motion. I'm sure extremely simple for any advanced ObjC coders. Can anyone with extensive ObjC-CocoaTouch experience give me some higher level recommendations? ie, 1 -general application design, should I start with a simple view based application, or navigation based or? 2 -should I use 3rd party animation frameworks such as Cocos2D, or stick with built in classes and methods? 3 -if using built in methods, classes, what is the recommended way of achieving a animation, that will be controlled via swipe and touch gestures? 4 -I want to eventually have multiple 'flipbooks' that I can 'instantly' swap with one another, ie to give the net effect of an object changing color, etc, but not sure how to approach this from a memory management point of view, related to #1 above Except for point 3 above, I'm not expecting any actual code examples. Just general guidelines to follow and perhaps, what are some next steps I should take in my goal as an ObjC code samurai.

• [C++] Wrong EOF when unzipping binary file

  Hello there, I tried to unzip a binary file to a membuf from a zip archive using Lucian Wischik's Zip Utils: http://www.wischik.com/lu/programmer/zip_utils.html http://www.codeproject.com/KB/files/zip_utils.aspx FindZipItem(hz, filename.c_str(), true, &j, &ze); char *content = new char[ze.unc_size]; UnzipItem(hz, j, content, ze.unc_size); delete[] content; But it didn't unzip the file correctly. It stopped at the first 0x00 of the file. For example when I unzip an MP3 file, it will only unzip the first 4 bytes: 0x49443303 (ID3\0) because the 5th to 8th byte is 0x00000000. I also tried to capture the ZR_RESULT, and it always return ZR_OK (which means completed without errors).   I need to write a process controller module on Linux that handles tasks, which are each made up of multiple executables. The input to the controller is an XML file that contains the path to each executable and list of command line parameters to be passed to each. I need to implement the following functionality: Start each executable as an independent Be able to kill any of the created processes independent of the others In order to do (2), I think I need to capture the pid when I create a process, to issue a system kill command. I tried to get access to pid in Java but saw no easy way to do it. All my other logic (putting info about the tasks in DB, etc) is done in Java so I'd like to stick with that, but if there are solutions you can suggest in C, C++, or Python I'd appreciate those, too.

• Getting pixel averages of a vector sitting atop a bitmap...

  I'm currently involved in a hardware project where I am mapping triangular shaped LED to traditional bitmap images. I'd like to overlay a triangle vector onto an image and get the average pixel data within the bounds of that vector. However, I'm unfamiliar with the math needed to calculate this. Does anyone have an algorithm or a link that could send me in the right direction? (I tagged this as Python, which is preferred, but I'd be happy with the general algorithm!) • How can two threads access a common array of buffers with minimal blocking ? (c#)

  Hello, I'm working on an image processing application where I have two threads on top of my main thread: 1 - CameraThread that captures images from the webcam and writes them into a buffer 2 - ImageProcessingThread that takes the latest image from that buffer for filtering. The reason why this is multithreaded is because speed is critical and I need to have CameraThread to keep grabbing pictures and making the latest capture ready to pick up by ImageProcessingThread while it's still processing the previous image. My problem is about finding a fast and thread-safe way to access that common buffer and I've figured that, ideally, it should be a triple buffer (image[3]) so that if ImageProcessingThread is slow, then CameraThread can keep on writing on the two other images and vice versa. What sort of locking mechanism would be the most appropriate for this to be thread-safe ? I looked at the lock statement but it seems like it would make a thread block-waiting for another one to be finished and that would be against the point of triple buffering.
