  • How do I connect two apps

    I am considering building an app in C++ that will be parsing text from the web and create some statistical results. These results I want to be fed in an external app in real time. The external app (to whose code I have no access, but can ask for a - paid - custom made addition) will then need some code to read and use these results. I am wondering what would be the best way to interconnect the two apps, in terms of speed and ease of implementation. I am considering : disk I/O (slow) a Windows service a DLL a web service a web page Perhaps I am missing a better solution ? Thank you.

  • Customizing File Linkage for a Build Configuration (Not Buil Target)

    I have a project that has several build configurations (FREE version, male-only, female-only, etc.). I am avoiding using multiple build targets because (A) the products are mostly all the same and (B) I don't want to have to do checkbox-management to keep every file I have included with all the targets. However, I have just a few files it would be nice NOT to include in certain builds. For example, I have male and female voice files, but I only want the male files in the male build and female voices in the female build. Question...is there a way to manage the build configuration to prevent these files from being included/linked in? What are my options?

  • Automated test, build and deploy

    I have visual studio team suite 2008. I was unable to meet the requirements to setup TFS, so I'm using TortoiseSvn and VisualSvn as my version contol in VSTS. I need the system setup to do the following: I neeed to be able to create and track workitems. When updates are made to the current project worked on in VSTS, the updates will be commited back to version control. Tests will be run to see that updates don't break the application. If there's a problem with the update it will be reported back to the developer. If there's no problem with the app, which is a clickonce application, it will automatically be built and deployed to an ftp server. I've never worked with version control, build servers, automated testing and continous intergration. I need to know what needs to be put in place for this type of system. I don't know which combination/stack I should be using: CC.net, TeamCity, Hudson, NAnt, NUnit, MsTest, Trac, BugTracker.net, Ndepend, VisualSvn Server, Perforce, Msdeploy, SCM. I want something that is free/opensource and relatively easy to setup and use. Please suggest a setup that will fit my needs. Any help appreciated

    Below I'm trying to match certain nodes. <xsl:template match="nodes"> <element> <xsl:apply-templates select="nodes" mode="different" /> </element> </xsl:template> Now, there are multiple ways of processing for the same nodes. I want to use this different way of processing within the current way of processing. That's why I perform apply-templates on the same selection, which is nodes, however the mode is different now. Here's how the different mode could look like: <xsl:template match="nodes" mode="different"> <!-- another way of processing these nodes --> </xsl:template> Now, this does not work. Only the first type of processing is processed and the apply-templates call is simply not applied. What am I doing wrong, how can I get what I want using XSLT? What could be another approach to solve this problem?

  • Re-execute target when specified as dependency to multiple rules

    I have the following GNU makefile: .PHONY a b c d a: b c b: d c: d d: echo HI I would like the target 'd' to be run twice -- since it is specified as a dependency by both b & c. Unfortunately, the target 'd' will be executed only once. The output of running make will simply be 'HI', instead of 'HI HI'. How can I fix this? Thanks!   • Build server polling vs. event-driven builds

    Why do build servers poll for changes instead of SVN firing off an event (or a post-commit step) that tells the build server to start a build? It seems terribly inefficient to poll for changes, especially when the number of projects increases and the polling period is set to a very low value (for example, 30 seconds).

  • How can I obtain in-game data from Warcraft 3 from an external process?

    I am implementing a behavior algorithm and would like to test it with my lovely Warcraft III game to watch how it will fight against real players. The problem I'm having is that I don't know how to obtain information about in-game state (units, structures, environment, etc.) from the running WC3 game. My algorithm needs access to the hard drive and possibly distributed computing, that's why JASS (WC3's editor language) isn't appropriate; I need to run my algorithm from a separate process. Direct3D hooking is an approach, but it wasn't done for WC3 yet and a significant drawback of that approach would be the inability to watch how the AI performs online, since it uses the viewport to issue commands. How I read in-game data from WC3 in a different process in a fastest and easiest way?

  • CI Build status output alternatives

    We currently use Cradiator to display the status of our continuous integration (CI) builds from CruseControl.net, on a 42" Samsung television on display high-up in our IT department. Cradiator is a great starting place, but we're getting to the point whereby we're having lots of projects on there and it's starting to get a bit 'full'. What I'd like to know is, what do you use to display your build statuses? Custom software? Off the shelf stuff? etc. Alternatively, I'm looking for ideas on how we improve on Cradiator.

As for now, I use cron that works every minute and activates a task that repeats itself every 5 seconds with sleeps between, for a minute. However, it works also when the application isn't being used. Is there a gem that will do this kind of thing?

For example, you're developing a specific product for a client and that product has its own Team Project, but is also using some of your other components or tools which are maintained independently in another Team Project. Where do you create work items for requirements which involve a change in both projects?     Hello all, My current project has a development web server and live web server. Developers make changes to files on the dev server and test them (by going to the dev address) and make changes as necessary. When the file or files are ready to go, they are copied to the live server. There is no version control. As you might expect, there are some problems with this model: It's hard to keep track of what other programmers have done. It's hard to keep track of what files should be copied to the live server. There is no version control. I'm in a position to make nearly any change I like, but I want it to be the right one! I have been turning this over in my head for quite a while, and I have a solution that might be okay. But I want SO's opinion. Certainly version control needs to be added. But how should it work with the existing codebase and where should the developers be testing? How can anyone know what needs to be moved to the live server? What other details need to be addressed? How would you attack this problem? Supplementary information: The website is vital, but not mission critical. A small amount of downtime is acceptable. There are very few developers. (Right now, only 4.) History: Before I started, the project used Visual Source Safe. This was a sufficiently bad experience that they quit using it and abandoned version control. The project is an ASP.NET (C#) website. This seems like a question that may have a complicated answer. Thanks for thinking about it!

  • C# VS 2008 Build Configurations - using different classes for different builds

    I'm writing an application which has two classes that provide basically the same functionality but for different situations. I'd like to have three versions of the software - one where the user can change an ini file to configure the program to use one of the two classes, and then one version that only uses one of the two classes. Right now I have it working via an ini file, but I'd like to be able to build versions that don't include the code for the unneeded class at all. What is the best way to go about this? My current line of thinking is that since both classes derive from a common interface I'll just add a compile time conditional that looks at the active build configuration and decides whether to compile that class. What is the syntax to do that? Thanks in advance for your help and input!

    I have a Hudson job that just does a check-out/update to a third-party library. Call this Job A. Several other jobs depend on this library. Call them Jobs B and C. They use the stuff checked out by Job A, and need it to be up-to-date. My question is, how can I require Jobs B and C to always run Job A (to update the library) before they run through their build routine? If this is not possible, can someone recommend another way to achieve the same effect?

    I haven't heard a lot of talk lately on model driven development, but some of my company's customers are using it. I know briefly what it is, but after trying to refresh my memory using Google I found that most of the information is from 2006-2007. Was it something that never really took off? More worryingly is the reason why the customers are asking: They want IEC 61508 complience. Is this actually a "not-so-good" idea that will live on simply because it is prescribed by a standard? I have too little experience to say if MDD is good idea or not (I'm guessing the right answer starts with "It depends"...), but the reasons for using it, that is standard complience, seems just wrong.

    I suggested the testing and functional teams to use Freemind map for jotting the functional flows and test steps. There was some paranoia but our module took it up and the QA teams were surprised to see near zero review comments. There was misconception among the team that there are doing more work. I assured them that by the time others would complete their work along with comment fixes, we would be going out for team lunchs and we did. The real returns came when the developers started refering to the created document in their discussions. So share your contribution(s).

What am I doing wrong?
